Architectural Gems In Greece by Barbara Burke
Greece author Jane Grant’s first book “Barns of Greece, N.Y…. What stories they can tell” was published in March of 2017. This book had a round about way of coming to fruition. “It all really started because I had an interest in
finding out about the Belgium farmers from the 1920s and 1930s in Greece. I have a neighbor whose family formerly lived on West Ridge Road. She told me that the horses from the Belgium farms made so much noise as they went continued on page 11

about their business on West Ridge Road that it prompted her family to move away from the noise. I wanted to find out about those farmers,” Grant says. Jane began taking pictures of the barns in Greece. She was concerned because she found that many of the barns were falling into decay and were being demolished. Since Author, Jane Grant much of the agriculture in Greece has been lost to commercial enterprise, many of the approximately 100 barns in Greece are no longer used for farming. Some barns have been converted for commercial use, and many are used to just keep “stuff” in. “Every time I thought I had photographed them all, I found more hiding out of site. It is like the saying ‘We see what we are looking for’ the barns were there all the time, some out of sight, but most are hiding in plain sight,” she says. As Grant’s photos grew in number she became curious about the stories behind the barns and the farms and the family farmers. “I started knocking on doors of strangers. I found most people happily shared the stories about their barns their farms and families. And each barn has a story,” she says. “Barns of Greece, N.Y…. What stories they can tell” is 64 full color pages containing Grant’s pictures and the stories about 60 of the barns in Greece. One of the barns, the Yates-Thayer barn at 720 Latta Road, Greece, is a large yellow barn of great beauty. “The barn almost came down. Through the efforts of the Historical Preservation Society of Greece it was sold to a developer determined to preserve it. The barn is located next to an elegant mansion that was formerly the summer home of a railroad magnate. The architecture of the mansion and the barn are beautiful. We are fortunate that is was saved,” Grant says. Before she decided to write the book, Grant’s barn photos were in an exhibit at the Greece Historical Society Museum. “The Historical Society was so helpful to me with my research on the properties and the families. The exhibit came together and was on display at the Museum for several months,” she said. Many people that saw the exhibit felt her photos and stories should be made into a book. Her book came together with the help of Marie Poinan, who Grant says was responsible for taking her raw materials and making them into a book. “Barns of Greece, N.Y…. What stories they can tell” is available to purchase at the Greece Historical Society Museum’s gift shop.

The name of the new Precinct 1 Police Headquarters, which reads Gerald D. Phelan Police Headquarters, was named in honor of former Greece Police Chief Gerald D. Phelan. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Supervisor Bill Reilich presented Gerald and his wife, Kathy, with a framed picture of the new Precinct 1 Police Headquarters. “What a proud day for the Town Board and I to be able
to dedicate this building in honor of all of the residents of the Town of Greece. I am so honored to hand the keys over to Chief Patrick Phelan and the dedicated officers of the Greece Police Department,” Reilich said. “Additionally, we are honored to have named this new facility after former Greece Police Chief Gerald Phelan, who served the Greece Community as police chief for nearly 20 years”. River Raft Adventures by Barbara Burke
Looking for some family time that provides growth for the mind, the body and the spirit? Adventure Calls Outfitters river rides on the Genesee River in Letchworth State Park in Castile, New York offer all of that and more. Described as “The Grand Canyon of the East” a river raft ride through the Letchworth State Park Gorge is the perfect adventure for first-time rafter and families with young children. Adventure Calls Outfitters President and owner Kevin Kretschmer says, “The five mile river ride is a scenic tour through the south end at the deepest part of the gorge. It is a relaxing ride that gives you time to look around to see and experience the gorge. Riders often encounter wildlife in the park that live along the river including eagles, herons, sea birds, beavers, hawks, river otters, deer, duck, geese and more. It is a perfect outing for families and groups of all sizes.” The tour passes the Wolf Creek Waterfalls that have a total drop of 225 feet. Wolf Creek Falls is made up of a series of four very steep cascades with some sections containing near vertical falls. The fourth section known as the Shower Curtain is not fully visible from the trails and can only be seen on the river ride. There is typically a stop at the Wolf Creek Falls during the ride. The river ride also passes the Denton Brook Cascade, the Three Sisters, and through the deepest part of the Great Bend Gorge (550 feet). There are 14 sets of rapids that are spread over the course of the trip. Whitewater rafting is classified on a level of difficulty scale from 1 thru 6. The Letchworth Park river rafting trip is 1 and 2 on the scale. Class 1 is described as - Moving water with small waves that tug at the boat. A relaxing way to spend the day. Class 2 is described as - Easy rapids, waves up to three feet that are readily seen. Some maneuvering is required. Adventure Calls Outfitters was founded in 1981 by Terry Shearn. Purchased upon Shern’s retirement 1999 by current owner Kevin Kretschmer, the company has grown considerable, added amenities, and continues to be based on a set of founding principles. Kretschmer says, “Our goal is for our guests to go home with a positive experience and memories that will last forever. We are committed to our community and as stewards of a gift to share with those around us.” As a company, Adventure Calls Outfitters donates their time and provides financial assistance to various local charities, environmental organizations and ministries. They view customer service as an extremely important principle of business. They are meticulous about maintaining a professional yet personable image in everything they do. Their equipment is upgraded on a consistent basis and they constantly seek ways to make the experience the best possible. The guide staff are among the elite in the business. Growing the Mind by Barbara Burke
The mission of Rochester Roots (ROOTS) is to empower citizens and communities, starting with youth, to create agency for their own sustainable wellbeing. Lakeshore Elementary School principal James Palermo worked with Rochester Roots while teaching in the City of Rochester School District. “I felt that Rochester Roots was the right program for Greece. Greece values hard work. We want our kids to know how to put in the hard work, to roll up their sleeves and the result is that students are strengthened academically, socially and physically. This program fits perfectly in this town, and is a program that our community can really rally around, Palermo says. The project at Lakeshore Elementary School is their Community Garden. A school-wide and community-wide project made possible through a $5,000 Community Food Projects Competitive Grant funded through the United States Department of Agriculture to be used over a period of three years. The grant was acquired through Rochester Roots. Last fall students and their families began the first year of gardening work. That includes building the infrastructure of raised beds, preparing the soil, digging the holes, and setting up the fences and posts. Year two work included deciding what to plant and where, and planting the heirloom vegetable, herbs, fruit and flower seeds. Year three will include expanding the garden with additional raised beds, fruit trees and a shade garden. There is also a comcontinued on page 19

munity group funding a solar panel lighthouse and an Eagle Scout building project to be completed in year three. Over the school year the garden work is done every Wednesday. During the summer months work on the garden will continue on Wednesdays with Rochester Roots, community organizations and churches helping with the maintenance of the garden. Next fall the students will realize the results of their work when they harvest seeds for next year’s garden, create food from what they have grown and prepare medicines and lip balm from their plantings. Principal Palermo sees great purpose to a community garden. He says, “This program is more than just building a garden. The purpose is to teach students about sustainability. They can use the concepts that they have learned and apply them to every aspect of building a strong community.” Students learn about the social system of soil, what plants work best when growing next to each other and how all aspects of the garden are dependent on each other for success. These same concepts are true for the social systems in the classroom. Students learn about relationship building, character development and how to work together in teams. “The impact on students goes far be- Mrs. Calabrese, Mrs. Pioli and Miss Allen’s fifth grade class helpyond academic learning. home and they know how to work together as a team. This builds family relationships and a shared experience way beyond just spending time with family.” Palermo also says working in the community garden greatly benefits students that learn by doing. “You can read from a manual how to do something. For many students unless they do it themselves they don’t really know how something is done. Working with plants and the soil, students develop an extended vocabulary, they are reading at a higher level, and they learn from doing, just by putting a shovel in their hands. Students are realizing their strengths. You would be surprised how much information a student can share about a zucchini plant. It is unbelievable the amount of information you can get out of them from
their gardening experiences,” he says. Rochester Roots (ROOTS) is a non-profit organization focused on Sustainability Education and Entrepreneurship, which it offers within twenty-six Sustainability Laboratories. Rochester Roots Executive Director Jan McDonald says their group works with the students indoor in the classrooms as well outside in the garden. “We work with students in the classroom on sustainability education. Students create a model system by looking at their decisions through seven community wellbeing outcomes and how the decisions they make will impact the social, economic and technological aspects of what they plant over the course of 15 years,” McDonald says. They have fed over one eighth of the population of Greece and Charlotte when families experience food emergencies. The annual budget to accomplish this is staggering. GEFS provides three boxes of food per family. Food boxes contain fresh, nutritional items including bread, milk, eggs, margarine and meat to accompany the food. The boxes contain enough food for three meals a day for about a week, food to help the family survive a food emergency. For forty years the Annual CROP WALK is the fundraiser the the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf has relied on to accomplish their success in feeding the hungry in Greece. The CROP WALK was held this year at Messiah Lutheran Church in Greece on Sunday, May 7, 2017.
Along with the donations received in the form of food and money, over 200 volunteers keep the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf running. Non-perishable food item donations can be brought to the Food Shelf on Mondays between 9AM-11AM. If this is not convenient call the Food Shelf pager at 585-277-5370 to make other arrangements. Monetary donations can be mailed to Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf, 500 Maiden Lane, Rochester, New York 14616 ATTN: Treasurer. Scaling New Heights by Barbara Burke
It’s not as if she didn’t know what she was getting herself into. GreeceNewsNY.com staff photographer Karen Fien photographed this event for an article in our November 2016 edition of GreeceNewsNY.com, she even received a 3rd place award at the Free Community Papers of New York (FCPNY) 2017 Spring Conference and Trade Show for a picture she took on that day. On May 19, 2017 Karen had her chance to experience the feeling for herself as she rappelled the 21 stories of the First Federal Building in downtown Rochester as part of the 21 Stories for Scouts fundraiser. The 21 Stories for Scouts is an annual rappelling event and is considered an “extreme” fundraising event that the Seneca Waterways Council began eight years ago designed to break away from the traditional fundraisers. The goal was to create an event that is more closely identified with Scouting. Karen expressed an interest in participating in the event, and when she was asked if she would like to rappel on Media Day she didn’t hesitate to say “Yes.” Karen says losing her dad when he was only 63 years old had a huge impact in how she lives her life. “I realized that life is short and to live life fully is very important,” she says.
GreeceNewsNY.com July 2017 23 That doesn’t mean that Karen wasn’t nervous about rappelling down the 21 stories (309 ft.) of the First Federal Building. “I drove by the building five different times just looking up at it,” she says. When the day came, the rappel was postponed a day because of winds. “I was nervous up until the time when I stepped out and was hanging over the side of the building. At that point I had no fear and all I could think about is why did I get myself so worked up over this. It was awesome,” she says. Each rappeller is accompanied by a support person, in Karen’s case it was Horace Byfield, a Greece resident that works in security for the First Federal Building. “Horace was the perfect partner. He made me feel comfortable, he was very supportive, we were joking around and he made it fun so I wasn’t nervous,” Karen says. Karen was one of approximately 65 people that scaled the First Federal Building for this year’s 21 Stories for Scouts Fundraiser. Over the eight years of the rappelling event nearly $400,000 has been raised. This year’s rappel raised over $44,000. Money raised will be used to support 1,235 youth in traditional scouting programs throughout Rochester and 36 after school programs. For more information about the event visit www.21storiesforscouts.org. For general information on Scouting visit www.senecawaterways.org. Provided Photos continued on page 24

Greece Athena Cheerleading Championships Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich was joined by Town Board Members Mike Barry, Brett Granville, Andrew Conlon, and Diana Christodaro for a proclamation ceremony honoring the Greece Athena Cheerleading Team for winning the Division 1 Small School Title at the New York State Cheerleading Championships. The New York State Cheerleading Championships were held at the SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College on March 4th, 2017. Under the leadership of coaches Danielle Mariano and Erika Green, the Greece Athena Cheerleading Team brought home the Division 1 Small School Title. “It was an honor to present the Greece Athena Cheerleading Team with proclamations recognizing their achieve-

are licensed by New York State, certified as First Responders or EMTs and more than half are A.C.A. certified Swift Water Rescue Technicians. The river guides have a median tenure of 10 years, and they utilize the latest technology to ensure that on each trip safety is a top priority. Adventure Calls Outfitters’ safety record is among the top within the Paddlesports industry. River raft guide Paul Brown is starting his 4th season as a river guide. He says, “My job as a guide is to run somewhere between the first and the last raft, to entertain guests and to watch out for all the rafts in our tour to make sure everything is safe.” Meeting and talking to people from all around the world is Brown’s favorite part of his job. “People are very friendly and love to talk about where they come from and they are very interested in finding out about what life is like here in our part of the world. It is really fun to talk with the guests and help them to feel comfortable and enjoy the experience. It is all about making it a nice trip for the guests,” Brown says. He also says that viewing the gorge from the bottom up is a whole different experience than viewing it from the top to the bottom which is the view from the trails. Adventure Calls Outfitters also offers other activities including team building, a ropes course and paddle instruction. They have special packages, trips and events throughout their season that ranges from the first week in April through the last week in October. There are barbecue packages with several menu selections from burgers to strip steaks to enjoy after the rafting experience. There are also camping packages that include rafting, supper and breakfast, tent camping and a variety of other activities to enjoy during the camping stay. There are Interpretive Trips where a naturalist accompanies the

Adventure Calls Outfitters’ website contains all the information needed to plan and reserve time for a river raft ride on the Genesee River. Find helpful hints and answers to questions such as, “Is this for me?”, “What to Wear?”, “How deep is the water?” and more. “We have families from all over the northeast and midwest that come to view this beautiful part of our country. We help visitors to plan their stay in our area, and promote tourism and businesses within our surrounding communities,” Kretschmer says. Visit www.adventure-calls.com for more information. From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich Although it has been a rather rainy spring season, I hope you’ve been able to enjoy those intermittent sunny days we’ve been having in Greece! We have been busy here at Town Hall planning and organizing all of the great events we have coming up over the next couple months. Next Sunday, June 11th from 1pm – 4pm, we will host one of the biggest events of the year: The Jerry J. Helfer Memorial Food Truck Rodeo. This will be in conjunction with the first Concerts at the Hall event featuring the Boomers. The food vendors who will be participating this year are Lugia’s Ice Cream, Barb-B-Que Inc, J&S Fried Dough, Daves Fine Food, Abbott’s Frozen Custard, Cheesed and Confused, Robs Kabobs, Midnight Smokin’ BBQ, and Red Osier. Proceeds collected from the Food Truck Rodeo will go towards the Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship, which provides the Greece community with the opportunity to recognize a student that regularly upholds exemplary moral values, devotes time and energy into helping serve the Greece community, and consistently displays outstanding leadership skills. Please join us for music, a delicious meal, and an opportunity to support the Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship. Check out more event details on my Facebook page! This past May, the Greece Town Board and I held ribboncutting ceremony for the grand opening of the new Precinct 1 Police Headquarters. The new 28,000-square-foot facility, located at the Greece Town Hall Campus, provides much needed space and upgrades to Greece Police employees. The name of the new police station is the Gerald D. Phelan Police Headquarters, which was named in honor
of former Greece Police Chief Gerald D. Phelan who served the Greece Community as Police Chief for nearly 20 years. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, I had the privilege of presenting Gerald and his wife, Kathy, with a framed picture of the new police station. On Memorial Day, I was honored to once again co-host with the American Legion Post Number 468 the Town of Greece Annual Memorial Day Parade and Celebration. The day started off with a remembrance ceremony hosted by the American Legion Post. The Memorial Day Parade kicked off at noon and featured such participants as the Greece Town Board and other Elected Officials, Legion Posts, the Rochester Honor Flight, Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, Fire and Police Departments, Ambulance Services, Marching Bands, the Taekwondo School, Rochester Street Machines, and many more. Following the parade was the Town of Greece Remembrance Ceremony, where Commander Mark Ostrander and I gave remarks in memory of those who served our country and paid the ultimate price. Conflict names were also read in remembrance of those who lost their lives serving our country. Those in attendance had the opportunity to visit the Gary Beikirch Veterans Memorial Wall, located on the east side of Greece Town Hall, where 28 new veteran names were recently inscribed. The day concluded with a post event luncheon hosted by the American Legion. The Town of Greece Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration is just around the corner. The day will kick off with the 5k Freedom Run for adults and the Scooby Stars and Stripes Run for kids. You can register for the 5k here https:// runsignup.com/Race/29926/. Plenty of activities will follow the 5k, including performances by Mickey Dolenz the Voice of the Monkees and Beatlemagic, food trucks, and the fireworks display! You can find more information about this event on our website or my Facebook page. As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other town related matters. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office or visit our website.

The Boy Scouts of America, one of the United States largest youth organization, is dedicated to promoting selfreliance, courage, and patriotism among young men. The

Choosing a Safe Sweetener by Tami Mungenast CPT CNWC
If you are watching your waist line and your carbs you know that added sugar is a “No-No.” With all the alternative sweeteners out there it is often a struggle to know which ones are the healthiest choice. Finding a sweetener that doesn’t cause insulin to rise or isn’t loaded with chemicals can be tricky but here are two types that are great choices: Stevia - Stevia is a plant in the ragweed family and has been used for thousands of years in South America. Stevia has zero calories and zero carbs and is 300x sweeter than sugar. It has no impact on blood sugar levels and some studies suggest it may even improve insulin signaling. Stevia extract does boast of a diverse source of nutrients to include polyphenols, caretenoids and amino acids. It also
GreeceNewsNY.com July 2017 29 has some other micronutrients that can reduce stress and potentially control the development of cancer and support immune system function. Monk Fruit - Monk fruit is also a small plant native to Southeast Asia. A small melon looking plant, monk fruit has been harvested and used for hundreds of years in eastern medicine. Although there is less research on Monk Fruit compared to Stevia, it does have studies that indicate it has a positive impact on blood sugar levels by improving signaling. Monk fruit has zero calories and zero carbs. It has some nutrients in it that are considered to have cancer fighting potential especially in inhibiting tumor growth of pancreatic cancer. It also has very similar properties as Stevia in helping boost the immune system. When choosing either Stevia or Monk Fruit look for the purest form or a whole food extract. Often natural sweeteners can be chemically altered with sugar alcohol or combined with artificial sweeteners. Try to avoid these commercial forms of the sweetener. Lastly, its always best to use the organic options or at least ones harvested from its natural habitat.
RIT women’s groups recognized by Girl Scouts of Western New York Rochester Institute of Technology’s Women in Computing and Women in Engineering programs were honored with the Commitment to Excellence Award from the Girl Scouts of Western New York. The women’s groups were chosen for their dedication to encouraging young girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math—also known as STEM. The award recognizes an organization or business which has shown exceptional commitment to the advancement of Girl Scouting ideals and goals through dedication and devoted service at the council level. The Women in Computing program was recognized with a plaque at the Girl Scout Annual Meeting May 18, 2017, in Buffalo, N.Y. The Women in Engineering group will be honored at a later date. “These groups have shown a tremendous commitment to developing STEM programming for Girl Scouts and granting them access to female role models working in these fields,” said Christine Kirwan, director of volunteer experience at Girl Scouts of Western New York. “Through RIT’s programs, our girls have been shown that there are many opportunities for women in STEM fields and gained the confidence to pursue their dreams.” Girl Scout leaders noted the RIT events and programs provide girls with unique experiences that they could not get elsewhere. Programs hosted throughout the year include the Engineering Fun Days, Tech Badge workshops and the Girls Soaring in STEM Fair. Students in RIT’s Women in Computing Outreach Committee work hard to create opportunities for young women to learn about computing before high school, in a fun and engaging environment. “Exposing Girl Scouts to computing at a young age is im-
portant because they need to know it’s a career option,” said Lana Verschage, director of RIT’s Women in Computing program, who attended the ceremony along with the program’s staff assistant, Deborah Jackson. “It’s a win-win situation when student leaders in Women in Computing interact with the Girl Scouts as role models to help encourage them to see computing as a field they can succeed in.” The women in STEM groups at RIT include, Women in Science, Women in Technology, Women in Engineering and Women in Computing. Greece Welcomes Governor Cuomo on Memorial Day New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo made a visit to the Town of Greece on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, 2017, to answer pleas for help with Lakeshore Flooding. During the Governor’s previous visit in early May he declared the shoreline along the Town of Greece and throughout the entire New York shoreline as a State of Emergency. This allowed affected towns the ability to receive help from the US Army National Guard and also many additional services to help residents cope with flooding, rising waters and mounting potential damage to their homes. The Governor has previously committed $5M for small business who have incurred damages, as well as a commitment to assist municipalities. With the assistance of the US Army National Guard, Greece Town employees and so many of the individuals from the community, we have filled and distributed over 200,000 sand bags. “Today’s announcement is the answer to my number one concern and top priority on behalf of our lakefront neighbors: financial assistance. First and foremost we have looked out for the safety and security of our residents, and the next step has always been financial help so they can repair their beloved lake front properties. Governor, what
you have delivered to our residents is hope – I’ve told them the Town Board and I would not stop trying and though we have a long way to go, there is one choice they won’t have to make, and that is whether to stay in their homes or be forced to abandon them,” Reilich said. On May 24, 2017, Rochester’s Cornerstone Group, Ltd., New York State Homes and Community Renewal, Rochester Regional Health, Genesis Housing Development Corporation, Rochester Housing Authority, local public and private sector partners broke ground for the Cornerstone Pointe Apartments, a 66-unit development for low income persons age 62 and older. The investment enhances Finger Lakes Forward, the region’s successful economic development initiative that is creating new opportunities for individuals and families, and revitalizing communities throughout the Finger Lakes. The development, adjacent to Long Pond Senior Housing and Greece Baptist Church near Ridge Road, will be comprised of 66 one- and two-bedroom apartments for low income seniors. Half the units will be set aside for frail senior citizens enrolled in Medicaid. Rochester Regional Health and its affiliates will provide supportive services. Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas said, “Cornerstone Pointe Apartments is another concrete example of Governor Cuomo delivering on his commitment to providing more affordable and supportive housing, which complements his Finger Lakes Forward economic revitalization initiative. We are proud to combine our resources and our expertise with that of our private sector partners for a development that will provide a safe place for more than 60 senior New Yorkers to live independently as a vital part of the larger community in the Town of Greece.” The nearly 70,000 square-foot complex is being built on a 4.4 acre site. The first floor will feature a manager’s office, supportive services office, sitting room, computer work stations, community room and patio. Seven units will be fully accessible and move-in ready for persons with mobility impairments featuring lowered counter tops and cabinets in kitchens and bathrooms and roll in showers. Three units will be built to accommodate persons with vision or hearing impairments, featuring horn/strobe light units, doorbells tied to chimes/lights and visually distinct electrical outlets and switches. The neighborhood offers easy access to a variety of community services such as public transportation, retail shopping, pharmacy and health services and the Mall at Greece Ridge. Senior Housing Ground Breaking in Greece continued from page 32
fordable senior housing, allowing our elderly residents to stay in the community that they call home, while receiving exceptional service and support. I have been pleased to support this project and advocate on its behalf at the state level.” Roger W. Brandt, Jr., President of Rochester’s Cornerstone Group, Ltd., said, “Cornerstone Pointe Apartments is the culmination of many years of effort. With the changing delivery of housing and supportive services to our senior population, Cornerstone Pointe, and its partnership with Rochester Regional Health System will be providing an innovative affordable, safe place for seniors in the greater Rochester community.” Kathryn A. McGuire, Senior Vice President, Rochester Regional Health said, “Rochester Regional Health is pleased to work with Cornerstone Pointe Apartments and its residents. Our assessment and care management services will be reaching out to residents to ensure that identified services and support needs are met so that they enjoy independent residency at Cornerstone Pointe Apartments including home and support services, primary medical care, home blood draws and other services. Our ElderONE “Program of All-inclusive Care of the Elderly (PACE)” will work with those individuals who identified as frail enough to need nursing home, but instead choose us to help them live at home. The comprehensive and coordinated services of ElderONE are a perfect match with Cornerstone Pointe Apartments as we combine senior living with health and supportive services. This nationally recognized program enables seniors to age in a place they call home.” Construction is expected to be completed in early 2018 with occupancy to follow.
