Street Machines of Rochester 43rd Annual Outdoor Auto Show Sunday, June 11, 2017 by Barbara Burke Richard Windhauser is the secretary/treasurer of the Street Machines of Rochester Car Club located in the Town of Greece. Street Machines of Rochester is a social club with over 130 members that has been in existence since 1974 and made up of members who have a true passion for cars. Windhauser is one of the original members of the Car Club. He has been chairman of the Annual Outdoor Auto Show for every one of the past 42 years and again for this year. “I keep trying to give up the job, somehow I always end up doing it. I do get a lot of satisfaction the day of the show when I see all the people enjoying the cars and the car owners sharing the history and experience of their cars,” Richard says.
Windhauser’s first car a ‘64 Dodge. The car he drove to school everyday when he attended Greece Arcadia High School.

The show features over 500 vehicles of all types including Antiques, Classics, Motorcycles, Street Machines, Customs, Street Rods, Race Cars, Sport Compacts and Stock to Modified cars and trucks. Thousands of spectators attend the show each year enjoying the cars and trucks, show vendors, food and drink, raffles, door prizes and entertainment. At 4PM there are over 100 Favorite and Special Awards given out to participants in the auto show. To register a vehicle in the show go to www.streetmachinesofrochester.com. Cost of registration before June 1st is $10, Day of the Show is $20. Spectator admission to the show is $3.00, spectator parking is free. The evening before the Auto Show on Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 4-8PM Street Machines of Rochester hosts their Free “Bad-

gerow Super Cruise” on the grounds of the auto show in Badgerow Park. This is a “preview” evening leading up to the big Auto Show on Sunday. Admission to the Super Cruise is free and all are invited to experience rides, great food and drinks and live music by Rockhouse Riot from 4-7:30PM. A portion of the proceeds from the Cruise-In and the Sunday Auto Show will go to the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester. Windhauser says,”All that it takes for a spectator to enjoy the Auto Show experience is an interest in and appreciation for vehicles. There is a lot of stories and information exchanged between the car owners and the auto show spectators. Car people are a special breed of people. They have lots of pride in their cars, they love to talk about them and share them with everyone. There is a real passion for cars and the whole experience of owning a show car.” Windhauser owns two show cars, a ‘64 Dodge that was his first car, and the car that he drove to school everyday when he attended Greece Arcadia High School. And he owns a 2006 Chevy SSR, a vehicle that he says “was only made for 4 years by Chevy.” Street Machines of Rochester is a not-for-profit organization that supports many groups and services in the Greece community including the Volunteer Ambulance, Parks and Recreation, and The Breast Cancer Coalition. They are an active group sponsoring monthly events throughout the year for their members. They meet on the first Sunday of the Month, their next monthly meeting is on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 2PM at North Greece Fireman’s Field. Meetings are open to the public and anyone with an interest in cars is invited to attend. For more information on Street Machines of Rochester visit www.streetmachinesofrochester.com. Provided Photos

Unity Tour 2017 by Tami Raco
Greece Police Sergeant Rides 320 Miles to Honor Fallen Officers Sergeant Marybeth Kowalski of the Greece Police Department rode as part of Team Rochester in her third Police Unity Tour. Since it began in 1997, thousands of officers all over the country have been coming together to honor the memory of officers who died in the line of duty. This year’s ride began on May 9, 2017. The tour ended four days later at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. The primary purpose of the annual tour is to raise awareness for all law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The secondary purpose is to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum. This year “Team Rochester” consisted of 13 riders from the Rochester Police Department, Monroe County Sheriffs, Gates Police, Brighton Police, Greece Police, the County Jail and the 911 Dispatch Center. The team began with a dedication ceremony at the Public Safety Building honoring two local fallen officers, Officer Daryl Pierson of the RPD and Lieutenant Michael Chiapperini of the Webster Police
Department. Team Rochester riders then went on to New Jersey to join 2200 riders on their 320 mile ride through several states, major cities, and on to Washington, D.C. The weekend was full of activities to honor the 144 fallen officers that died in the line of duty and to support their families and loved ones. Sgt. Kowalski first got involved in the Unity Tour with Officer Val Cutt who has ridden in the tour for five years. To participate in the event, the officers purchase their own equipment, including their own bike, train all year for the 320 mile long ride, and are required to raise a minimum of $1850. Sgt. Kowalski is passionate about being part of The Unity Tour. “We are remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We don’t forget them. That’s what this is all about,” Kowalski said. She loves the energy she experiences riding through the towns and villages in a two mile deep sea of blue. Kowalski said, “It’s an unbelievable experience and so moving to see people showing support, holding flags, and some towns hold parades for us. It all reinforces that people really do care.” To learn more about the Unity Tour visit http://policeunitytour.com/ See more photos online at www.greecenewsny.com Photo by Karen Fien See photo on page 12

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich I hope everyone has been enjoying this year’s spring season in the Town of Greece! Here at Town Hall, we have been busy coordinating all the great events and programs we have planned for this spring and summer. Our upcoming popular events include the Memorial Day Celebration, the Jerry J. Helfer Food Truck Rodeo, the Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration, and our beloved Summer Concert Series. Check out my Facebook Page and the Town of Greece Website for more information! I am pleased to announce the opening of new Greece Police Station. The 28,000-square-foot police station, located at the Greece Town Hall Campus, is now home to our 130 Greece police employees. The new police station is in an easily accessible location, will provide more space for employees to work in, and offers new technology that will make the station safer. This project was paid for through both town reserve funds and a bond. Greece Police employees have been looking forward to this new station, as they have working from a small and outdated facility up until this point.
GreeceNewsNY.com June 2017 17 Our annual Memorial Day Parade and Celebration will be happening May 29th this year. I am honored to co-host with the Greece Town Board and the American Legion Post 468 as we remember those who lost their lives in combat. The Memorial Day Parade will begin at noon, rain or shine! For the full list of events scheduled for Memorial Day, please see my Facebook page or the Town of Greece website. One of our most popular events of the year, the Jerry J. Helfer Food Truck Rodeo, is scheduled for Sunday, June 11th. This event is presented by the Town of Greece Youth Board in conjunction with the Town of Greece to support the Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Award Scholarship Fund. Come out and enjoy a meal from a selection of several vendors, and be sure to stay for the first show of our Summer Concert Series, the Boomers! The food truck rodeo is scheduled from 1pm-4pm, with the concert beginning at 2pm. Check out the “Event” section on my Facebook page for more information. As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other town related matters. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office or visit our website.

Historic Lakeshore Flooding 500+ Homes Impacted in Greece Area by Tami Raco
According to Lakeshore Fire Department Chief James O’Coin there are 551 lakefront homes in his district from Edgemere Drive to Hilton that are potentially impacted by the high water levels of Lake Ontario. All United States and Canadian Lake Ontario shorelines are experiencing flooding. The lake commission states that the unusually heavy rainfall and early snow melt this spring are to blame for the current flooding problems all along the shoreline. According to data released by the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, Lake Ontario’s water level has risen 14.2 inches since April 1, 2017 and increased a total of 39 inches since the seasonal low level in December. During the month of April some areas in the lake’s watershed got more than twice the usual amount of rain, rain which ultimately ended up in Lake Ontario and brought the lake to its highest level in 24 years. The high waters are causing flooding to many homes and properties along the southern lakeshore of Lake Ontario. Many Greece residents have suffered damage to their break walls, property and homes. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers forecasts the lake will rise an additional six inch-

es in May based on forecasted higher than usual rainfall. A resident of Old Edgemere Drive in Greece has lived on his property for over 50 years. He has witnessed many severe storms, including Hurricane Agnes, and has never seen conditions this bad. “This is the highest the lake has been since I have been here,” he said. His garage is underwater but his break wall is intact. Many of his neighbors lost their break walls and their homes are flooded. He expects it to get worse as we go through Spring into Summer and anticipates that once the winds shift to the northwest the northeastern communities will be adversely affected. He praised the efforts of the Town of Greece, especially Supervisor Bill Reilich, in their flood relief efforts. “Bill is fighting right alongside all of us. I give him a lot of credit with all of the weather disasters our town has faced in the past few months.” For many lakeshore residents insurance does not cover damage the high lake level is causing to their homes. A 6th grader, Ava Frosini, from Northwood Elementary School set up a Go Fund Me account for her Grandma who is living in one of the homes being destroyed by the lake. Her grandmother is an 87 year old widow on fixed income and her insurance will not cover the damage. Town of Greece officials are working together with the Supervisors Office, the Highway Department, the Fire Department and Police Department to provide as much help as they can to residents. “Every day we have a phone conference to discuss the situation and discuss the best way to provide resources to the lakeshore residents,” said O’Coin. continued on page 19

Historic Lakeshore Flooding continued from page 18
In one week the Town of Greece provided residents with over 56,000 sand bags, and during the first weekend of May they packed and provided 20,000 more that were used as a deterrent to the flooding. Supervisor Reilich is working to not only provide resources to help residents, but also working on fostering a resolution to high lake levels. The Town of Greece received help packing sand bags from the U.S. National Guard and Monroe County Sheriff’s Department inmates. The Canandaigua Civil Air Patrol NY212 helped with distribution of sand bags to residents. Greece high school students and sports teams also helped with the sand bag operation. Volunteers are always needed to continue the relief efforts. To find out about volunteer opportunities in Greece contact Deputy Supervisor Michelle Marini at 585-2252000. workshop, as well as RAPA’s annual Glee Club and acting and tap classes. Programs start at age 4 and some are open for senior citizens. Additionally, students can take private lessons throughout the summer and school year. The special one on one experience builds not only theatre talent; it can help selfconfidence and public speaking skills for life. “The instructors have taught my son a variety of techniques in dance, acting and singing that have increased his confidence on stage and in everyday life!” said Shelleen Fizer, parent of a highly-involved RAPA student. Internship opportunities are open for select high school and college students to work in theatre administration, costume design, technical aspects and more. These young artists are selected throughout the country based on skills, experience, and references. Many of RAPA’s teaching artists and professional actors will be performing this summer in RAPA Family Theatre’s production of Rumpelstiltskin from July 8-August 6, 2017. The show is a one-hour musical story targeted for introducing elementary aged students in attending professional theatre. Mature audiences may enjoy attending RAPA’s production of Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party produced in theatre-in-the-round with support from the Gay Alliance and LGBT Giving Circle. RAPA’s summer programs offer a local location with a quality staff at the Kodak Performing Arts Center for training the up and coming new talent. Treating each student as a professional is just part of the enjoyment in the largest summer theatre program in Upstate New York. Space is extremely limited. Reasonable, competitive prices and rates can be found on RapaTheatre.org website or call 585-254-0073 for more information. Performance tickets go on sale July 1, 2017. Provided Information

This year’s tree was planted in memory of the Department of Public Works employee, Mr. Lance Towner. “Lance was a loved member of the Department of Public Works family. He took great pride in his job and his work ethic was admired both by his fellow co-workers, and the residents of Greece that he served. Creating a New Healthier You by Tami Mungenast CPT CNWC
Responsibilities, time shortage, stress, and complacency can often lead us to living a life that is not as healthy as the one we once lived, or hoped to live. Regardless how long you have been in this place it doesn’t mean it’s your life sentence. Acknowledging that you are not where you want to be with your health and fitness, and then recognizing the direction you want to go, can open the door to healthy changes. Once you have identified this, the real work can happen to implement long lasting lifestyle changes. To create your healthier identity focus on these 3 simple yet effective steps: •Reject habitual actions that are counterproductive to your wellness. Reject unhealthy food choices you have grown to crutch on, the complacency of meal preparation, the sedentary lifestyle, and the negative self-talk. Reject these actions and begin a new life. •Put on your new habits every morning like your clothing. This is your new identity. Wear it everyday. Wear this new way of looking at food, new way of shopping in the grocery store, new way of ordering when eating out, new way of cooking, new way to look at exercise, and a new way to live actively. •Maintain the course. Change is often easy to start but difficult to
maintain. When stress hits, life knocks you down. It’s easy to revert back to the old you. Surround yourself with layers of motivation to stay the course including people that support you and are role models for wellness and healthy living. Read articles supporting health, subscribe to healthy living social media feeds, and fill you inner self dialogue to positive talk. Make this new identity the identity you live by. Living healthy in the way you eat and the way you move your body will not only affect your body but also improve you mind and cognitive function and overall feeling of happiness. In today’s world of fast food and sedentary living, choose not to be conformed to the unhealthy patterns of society.

Spring Fling Pickleball Fun Fundraiser 2017 Held April 22, 2017 • Maplewood YMCA, 25 Driving Park Avenue, Rochester
Building community on the courts
An Essay by Wendy Cooper, Founder Healthy Highway I was introduced to the game of pickleball back in the 90’s on a court in Florida where my parents lived. I waited until 2009 for it to reach Rochester, New York. I am now addicted… and I will tell you why. I enjoy the action of the game but it is the people I have had the privilege of meeting that has been my best gift. The friendships, the stories, the camaraderie, and community continue to grow every year I play. A perfect example of the power of community was demonstrated in the Spring Fling Pickleball Fun Fundraiser that I had the honor of directing in April. Twenty-four players from around the area came together to play in a round robin format, but what made this unique was that each game was with a different partner and with different people. These people would never have had the opportunity to play together if it was not for the power of pickleball. Scores were reported but were only for display. Awards were given for the following: the most “udderly” exhausted player; the fastest “hoofed” player; the best “barn burner” shot of the day; the best “cow-munication” between partners, and the best “mooove” on the court. Why the “cow” idioms? Because the second communitybuilding construct of this event was that it was a fundraiser for a non-profit called Humans for Education. This organization raises money to support schools in Kenya by making a commitment to support sustainable economic development, quality education, and ensure that health and sanitation is available for all students. Humans for Education assists in developing and strategically delivering innovative solutions and quality education to combat the global educational deficit. Cows are purchased to help these schools be self-sustainable so the “cows on the court” event not only brought our community together, but helped a community on the other side of the world. For more information visit www.humansforeducation. org Healthy snacks were served, a local musician donated her time to come and play, and local vendors came to teach the players new healthy choices. Players could enjoy a chair
massage, get a free nutrition evaluation and learn about healthier cookie choices. The best story that came from this day was from one of the “senior” players that had not won a game all day. The last game she played was with a “slightly” younger partner and they won. He put his arm around her as they walked of the court, both players smiling from ear to ear. This is how it should bb. AND…did I mention the “medals” were cow bells? AND….we sent a pickleball net, balls and 4 paddles to Kenya! So as you are on the court, smile at that new player, give an encouraging word, ask how your partner is and listen to what they say. You may be surprised at what you receive in return. NOTE ON PICKLEBALL IN GREECE: Pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy to learn. Played with a paddle and plastic ball, pickle ball is a fun sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It is estimated that nationwide over 100,000 players are actively playing the sport. In May of 2015 the Town of Greece opened their new Pickleball courts at the Greece Town Hall Campus. Located on the north side of the Greece Community Center there are six courts available for Pickleball play. For more information on the Pickleball courts, leagues and opportunities to play call the Community Center at 723-2425.

National Day of Prayer observed in Greece by Tami Raco
The Town of Greece celebrated in the Annual National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at the Greece Town Hall. Pastor Pat Medeiros of Greece Assembly of God Church has been the key facilitator in Greece of this national observance for the past 22 years. It was the 66th Annual National Observance which is held each year on the first Thursday of May. The celebration invites people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Public prayer and national days of prayer have a long-standing and significant history in American tradition. Many cities and towns nationally observe and participate in this National Day of Prayer by holding a community prayer service. “Like Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays this day has become a national observation and even placed on Hallmark calendars,” said Pastor Pat Medeiros. Every year Pastor Pat reaches out to the local church community to participate in this national prayer service. He feels it’s necessary to lift up our nation and community in God and prayer which is why he voluntarily coordinates this event for the Town of Greece. This year Pastors from Calvary Chapel of Greece, New Testament Christian Church, Lakeshore Community Church, Hope Lutheran Church, First Bible Baptist, Journey Christian Church, Morning Star Christian Fellowship, Samaritans Harvest Fellowship, The Father’s House Greece, and Greece Assembly of God all participated in the prayer service. The Northstar Christian Academy Choir performed and worship music was sung by Joe Gallo of Greece Assembly of God.
The Greece Prayer Service was well attended, made up of many residents from the community as well as strong representation by the Public Officials that serve the Town of Greece. Every year, local, state, and federal observances are held from sunrise in Maine to sunset in Hawaii, uniting Americans from all political and ethnic backgrounds in prayer for our nation. It is estimated that over two million people attended more than 30,000 observances that are organized by approximately 40,000 volunteers.
