A History of Service by Barbara Burke Bill Sauers is a Greece, New York native who knows a lot about the history of Greece, the long ago history, recent history and Greece’s current history in the making. As President of the Greece Historical Society, and a life long resident of Greece, Sauers is in the perfect position to know all about Greece. Sauers grew up in the Dewey - Stone Road neighborhood. “Everything was in walking distance, you assumed that was how everyone lived. We had all the best of everything, a great Fire Department and Emergency Services, shops, schools, churches. It was all in the neighborhood. We could walk to wherever we were going. I graduated from Olympia High School in 1965 and at that time there was only one High School in Greece. Greece was growing so quickly that eight years later there were four High Schools for Greece students. In the early 60s Greece was building not individual houses, but streets of houses, a whole street would be built in a year,” Sauers said. Sauers worked for the City of Rochester for 36 years. He started his career with the City in civil engineering as a draftsman. He retired as an engineer technician. He also served 38 years in the Army Reserve. Initially he served a six year commitment, after the six years he decided to reenlist and 38 years later he retired from the reserves as a US Army, Sergeant Major. During his career in the Army Reserves he worked in Germany at a NATO School. “It was a great experience. I worked with 25 different countries and learned a lot about our world and different cultures,” Sauers said. Bill and his wife Susan recently celebrated 50 years of marriage. They have two adult children Matthew, who lives in Brockport, and Michael, who lives in Lincoln, Nebraska. On April 26, 2018, the Greece Chamber of Commerce honored Bill Sauers with a Community Award presented to, “Remarkable individuals and organizations that have made a significant impact on the Greece region.” Bill was present-

GreeceNewsNY.com June 2018 5 ed the 2018 History Award in recognition of distinguished service in preserving history for future generations. Sauers’ interest in History developed when he started to research his great-grandmother, Anne Sauers, and her role in the running of a hotel on Edgemere Drive around 1920. Known then as the Outlet, the hotel was a popular retreat before Prohibition. “I did my research at libraries looking through old newspapers for stories,” Sauers said. He also did some traveling during his quest to learn the story. “Now people sit at home to do their research. They use the internet to find information. The truth is, although it might seem like it, everything isn’t on the internet. For me to travel and search Historian Magelene Moore-Holley shared stofor informa- ries of Harriet Tubman through her personification was much tion of this American woman, abolitionist, humore interest- manitarian, scout and spy for the United States ing. As Sauers’ interest in History grew, he visited the Greece Historical Society Museum. “I only live a block away from the Museum. I was a frequent visitor and eventually I was called to be a board member, which slowly evolved into becoming the Vice President and now I guess I am President for life,” he said. He has been an active member of the organization since 1998. Serving as a board trustee since 2002, and holding the positions of publicity chairman, Vice President and as President since 2007. In his role as President of the Greece Historical Society he plans the monthly community programs, maintains the Society’s Facebook page and monthly e-mail blast. He is also a regular contributor to the Society’s newsletter. He has presented several originally created history programs to dozens of community organizations. Sauers is quick to point out, “It’s not just me.” He says the Historical Society is made up of many volunteers that are dedicated to keeping history alive. Greece Historical Society Programs include their Tuesday Evening Lecture Series and Sunday Afternoon Programs. continued on page 6

A History of Service continued from page 5

The Tuesday Evening programs are typically held at the Greece Public Library and feature local historians, authors and humanities scholars. The programs have earned a reputation for providing high quality, professional and entertaining history lessons. One of the most popular programs presented was the History of the Odenbach Shipbuilding Corporation. “We had over 300 people who were interested in the program. I think it was because everyone was familiar with the building, they did not know the history. It was human curiosity. We ended up doing three presentations of the program in order to accommodate the overflow crowds that were interested in finding out about the former Greece Landmark Business,” Sauers said. Other popular programs presented by the Greece Historical Society include “A Conversation with Harriet Tubman,” “Buffalo Soldiers,” “Rediscovering Frederick Douglass,” and “Blanche Stuart Scott: America’s First Aviatrix.” The Greece Historical Society is an all volunteer organization that defines their purpose as, “To collect, preserve, research and share local history with the community. The goal is to provide the community with an awareness of the past, an appreciation of the present and a vision for the future, giving a sense of roots and a greater feeling of belonging.” Since 1988 the Historical Society and Museum have been located in the former home of Gordon Howe, former Greece Town Supervisor for 26 years. The 1855 farm house was restored by the Society and sits on a one acre parcel of land leased from the Town of Greece and located on the Greece Town Campus. The house is owned and maintained by the Society and is supported mostly through member-

ships, donations and occasional grants from the state. In addition to active participation in the Greece Historical Society, a few of Sauers’ other affiliations and memberships include, Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Historical Society, the New Society of the Genesee, Friends of the Greece Public Library, Rochester Genealogy Society, Northwest AARP, Landmark Society of Western New York, and is a life member of the U.S. Army Non-Commissioned Officers Museum. Sauers feels the success of the Town of Greece is due to an active community of volunteers. He said, “What I like best about Greece are the many organizations and volunteers that make up the Town. They are truly the heart of the community. The people of Greece give of their time and talents and it is what makes everything work here. We have a history of volunteerism.” For more information on the Greece Historical Society, their programs and volunteer opportunities visit www. greecehistoricalsociety.org. Photos by Karen Fien

Can You Conquer the Gauntlet? by Tami Raco

Greece Gauntlet takes place June 9th A community wide 5K obstacle course mud run will take place at Greece Arcadia High School on Saturday, June 9th. Greece Central Physical Education Instructor Emile Nicholson has been coordinating the Greece Gauntlet each year since its inception five years ago. “We wanted to create an event as a way to give back to the community and have fun for a good cause,” Emile said. According to Emile, “The Gauntlet is a tough and challenging course, but offers an option to many of the extreme obstacle races.” The 5K layout winds around many acres of natural terrain around the Arcadia campus in which there are many natural and man-made obstacles. This year the course is expected to be even bigger with 18-20 obstacles. The obstacles will include a steeple chase, rope swings, tube crawls, mud bogs and a slip and slide that will be set up by the North Greece Fire Department. The Greece Gauntlet is not a timed race but a challenge. “At the end of the Gauntlet you will be wet, muddy and tired all while having the time of your life and also some bragging rights,” Emile said. This year the Greece Teachers Community Program is the recipient of the proceeds raised. GTCP is a non-profit that provides resources and support to the entire Greece School District ranging from providing clothing to college assistance and more. The event is possible thanks to over 60 volunteers and the supportive sponsorship from local businesses community wide. There is live music, food and drink available.

The event is family friendly. All ages are welcome, an adult should accompany younger children. The day starts with an 8AM check-in time. The first wave begins at 9AM and runs every 15 minutes. Pre-registration is recommend to receive a free event shirt. For more information, to register or to make a donation visit www. greecegauntlet.com

Dentistry From The Heart Greece Family Dentistry & Implantology is offering free smiles to anyone who does not currently have dental insurance and needs dental treatment. They will host the 2nd Annual Dentistry From The Heart free dental day and join with local volunteers and sponsors to serve people in need of fillings, extractions and cleanings. Dentistry From The Heart (DFTH) is a registered national non-profit organization with a simple mission – making people smile. Founded in 2001 by a dentist in New Port Richey, Florida, DFTH was created to aid those in need, including the growing population of under-insured Americans. Over 100 million Americans lack dental insurance and over 29 percent of adults have untreated cavities. Without events like DFTH, dental care simply isn’t an option for many of the uninsured. To date, DFTH has helped over 300,000 patients and provided over $7 million dollars in dental care to patients across the country. “Now more than ever, I know there are people out there

GreeceNewsNY.com June 2018 23 that need dental care, but have no means to afford treatment – whether they’re out of a job, or just don’t have dental insurance. This Dentistry From The Heart event is our way of caring for our community, and being there for the people who are in need of dental treatment,” said Dr. Oliver Cabrera, DDS. The event will take place on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Greece Family Dentistry & Implantology, 120 Erie Canal Drive, Rochester. Starting at 8:00AM, staff and volunteers will treat the first 100 patients, or however many they can serve by 4PM. People will be seen on a first come, first served basis. It is suggested to arrive early, dress appropriately for the weather and to bring chairs, blankets, water and snacks to prepare for possible waiting outside to be seen. From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich We’ve had an eventful spring season here at Greece Town Hall, and are excited for the upcoming summer activities! Make sure to mark your calendars for our Annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 28th. Every year in observance of Arbor Day, the Town of Greece plants a tree to both honor a member of the community and to promote the importance of trees for our environment. This year’s tree was planted in memory of the late Eileen Coyle, founder and CEO of Monroe Ambulance. I was joined by many of Eileen’s family members, friends, community members, and elected officials for the ceremony. Eileen was very well respected in her field and held various leadership positions. Everyone who had the honor of knowing her knew that she had a zest for life and always made family her number one priority. The tree chosen by Eileen’s family to be planted in her honor was the Eastern Red Bud Tree, which was planted on the Greece Town Hall Campus near the Kids Canyon Playground. Several new businesses have opened up in Greece this past month. As you probably know, Chick-fil-A is now open at 2140 West Ridge Road. The restaurant, owned by Greece resident Alan Taylor, offers a variety of fresh food and many daily handmade menu items. Another business, Something Delicious, recently opened at 2455 Ridgeway Avenue after owner, Mina Rivazfar-Hoyt, decided to move the business to Greece after being in the City of Rochester for three years. Something Delicious offers wedding cakes, custom cakes, cupcakes, and French macaroons. Another business that recently opened in Greece is Vision Nissan. Owned by Dan Edwards, Danielle DiLorenzo, and Mario Marino, Vision Nissan Greece is located at 4000 West Ridge Road. I wish all the new business owners great success! The Town of Greece is happy to have you! Be sure to mark your calendars for our Annual Jerry J. Helfer Memorial Food Truck Rodeo event! This event will be held on Sunday, June 10th from 1:00pm – 4:00pm and will be held in conjunction with the first Greece Summer Concert Series featuring Elvis Lives! Jerry Helfer was a man of exceptional character and virtue who always exhibited kindness to anyone he encountered. Throughout his life, Jerry dedicated his time and talents to making our community a better place. Proceeds collected from the Food Truck Rodeo will go towards the Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship. Our annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony will take place on Monday, May 28th. As in years past, the parade will proceed down Long Pond from Janes Road to the Greece Town Hall Campus. The parade will start at 12:00 noon and will be followed by a Remembrance Ceremony held at the Greece Town Hall Pavilion. Please join us as we honor all those who so selflessly gave their lives for our freedom. As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other Town-related issues. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office or visit our website.
