Opioids: The Drug Next Door First of a four part series on the opioid epidemic affecting Western Monroe County by Tami Raco You are raising a great kid. Your teen comes from a loving home, achieves good grades, and is involved in sports or extracurricular programs. Of course, all teens sometimes experience moodiness or agitation. Maybe the behavior worsens, maybe they become more detached. But you’re not alarmed until you suddenly wake up to the nightmare that your child has a drug problem. What seemed impossible yesterday becomes a reality today. This is the face of “Generation Rx. “Good kids” are the growing segment of the opioid epidemic. More now than ever these kids are dying from addiction. Drug overdose continues to be the leading cause of accidental death in the United States, and the key driver is opioids. Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illicit drug heroin, as well as the licit prescription pain relievers Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Codeine, Morphine, Fentanyl and others. Opioids are chemically related and interact with opioid receptors on nerve cells in the brain and nervous system to produce pleasurable effects and relieve pain. According to the American Society of Addictive Medicine, “Addiction is a primary, chronic and relapsing brain disease characterized by an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors.” Over 2 million Americans 12 years and older have a substance use disorder involving prescription pain relievers. ASAM reported in 2015 that over 275,000 children aged 12-17 were illegal users of pain relievers, 122,000 kids were classified as having an addiction to them, and an estimated 21,000 kids were using heroin.
Many of these cases began with kids taking family members or friends unused pain relievers. They are naïve and unaware of the dangers of opioid use. Is America in more pain than any other country? A whopping 80% of worldwide opioid consumption is in America. According to Express Scripts, Americans consume 99% of the global consumption of the specific opioid Vicodin, (Hydrocodone). In 2015 over 300 million prescriptions for opioids were issued in the United States which was more than enough to provide every single American their own bottle of pain pills. As this problem grew, laws eventually began to change and the way doctors prescribe pain pills has tightened, still the ramifications of this addiction is at epidemic proportions. According to the CDC drug overdose deaths, especially opioid-involved deaths, continue to increase in the United States. CDC reports that a startling 91 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. The death rates from opioids reached 72% in 2015. Statistics show that four out of five new heroin users started out by the misuse of prescription painkillers. Surveys of people in treatment for opioid addiction said they eventually turned to heroin because prescription opioids were “far more expensive and harder to obtain.” The majority of the deaths are from synthetic opioids including Fentanyl. Fentanyl is a pain reliever often used for cancer patients. Another high potency opioid is Carfentanil (Elephant tranquilizer), it is 10,000 times stronger than morphine. When an overdose occurs a person loses consciousness and stops breathing. Opioids affect the part of the brain that regulates breathing. Combining these drugs with alcohol or other drugs such as Xanax can increase risk to overdose. continued on page 8

The opioid epidemic continues to grip local communities. This summer New York State was cited as “outpacing the nation in heroin deaths.” According to the NYS Comptroller the death rate from these dangerous drugs surpassed national trends. The trend is even more apparent locally. Monroe County is heavily impacted by the heroin and opioid epidemic. According to the NYS Department of Health, Monroe County saw a huge increase in heroin overdoses in 2016. Although the county has not released its official 2016 statistics, it is expected to show a significant increase. Prescription drug monitoring programs have helped control and limit opioid prescription abuse. At the same time, it has driven the street value of pain pills up and addicts are turning to cheaper drugs like heroin. Lori, a suburban mom from the Churchville Chili area has a son who is currently battling a heroin addiction. He began using marijuana and misusing Adderall in his early teens. It eventually led to his full blown heroin addiction by the time he was in his 20s. Lori said the street cost of an OxyContin can go for as much as $80 a pill and the kids can get heroin for as little as $5 a hit. Lori recently lived through one of her worst nightmares, she and her husband found their son Ricky overdosed. He was in his bedroom, not breathing and foaming at the mouth. Thanks to their training they were able to administer Narcan, the opiate overdose antidote, and saved their son’s life. Ricky still is struggling with his recovery journey. Using opioid drugs just a few times is highly addictive and extremely dangerous. Although temporarily, it gives the user a calm euphoric sensation of escape from reality. Often with just two uses of heroin the user finds themselves imprisoned by the drug. Heroin addiction is in one of the most deadly and debilitating addictions. Laurie Polatas of Hilton said her 18 year old daughter was addicted after two days of herion use. After a few months of hiding her use and growing addiction to heroin, Michelle told her Mom about her addiction. The news blindsided the Polatas family. Their daughter was always a good kid on her way to a nursing career and she never showed any indication that made her family feel she would ever use drugs. After the destructive addiction took hold, Michelle’s recovery was not easy, it came about after her incarceration. When released, she had a lot of hard work to do in recovery. She is now 16 months clean and rebuilding her life with the help and support of her family and loved ones. To continue reading this article go to www.GreeceNewsNY.com. The nonprofit’s largest fundraiser of the year, the event is a night full of gaming, raffles, prizes, entertainment, hors d’oeuvres and desserts. “Great people, fun times and lots of raffles. So many chances to win amazing, quality items from wine to gift cards to huge gift baskets for the sports fan or animal lover. This event sells out fast because it’s such a hit,” says Jenna Petty, GRASP volunteer. Tickets cost $40 each or two for $75. They can be purchased in person at Pet World Greece (Ridgemont Plaza) and Special T Cakes (3811 Dewey Avenue) or online at https://squareup.com/store/grasp. “Since GRASP was formed 21 years ago, we’ve been able to help thousands of local animals find their forever family. Every donation we receive goes directly to helping the dogs and cats in our care,” says Denyse Clark, GRASP board member. GRASP is a volunteer-run, foster-based animal rescue group in Greece. Their mis-
sion is to decrease dog and cat reproduction, promote responsible pet ownership, and place homeless dogs and cats into loving, permanent homes. For more information about the rescue or GRASP’s Fabulous Vegas Night Fundraiser, visit www.graspinc.org or call 234-1953. Provided information

Keeping History Alive
The Genesee Valley Sock Machine Club (GVSMC) was founded in 2006 by Greece resident Fred Hauck. The restoration, preservation and use of antique sock machines manufactured over one hundred years ago form the basis for the Club. Currently, GVSMC has 34 members. They meet once a month and frequently get together to give public demonstrations and share their knowledge about Sock Knitting Machines. Some GVSMC members raise sheep and alpacas which provides fibers for beautiful scarves or socks. Four members of the GVSMC own the popular Master Machine manufactured in Rochester by the Home Profit Company. GVSMC founder Fred Hauck says his interest in sock knitting machines stems from his mother Florence Way Hauck. In 1923 Mrs. Hauck bought a sock knitting machine of her own. “My mother passed the sock knitting machine to me in 1976. My interest in the machines and the history of the manufacture of the machines in Rochester grew from there. From that time to the present I have been collecting, repairing, selling and engaging with others to promote the use of antique knitting machines. I receive daily calls from people with questions about the machines, I am a guidance counselor of sorts,” Fred Hauck said. Hauck’s knowledge about antique sock knitting machines grew over the years. He was a founding member of the Circular Sock Knitting Machine Society (CSKMS) - an international organization for owners and operators of circular

moved his company from Rochester to Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts in 1867, and 150 years later that company is still making knitting machines for commercial use. The Home Profit Knitting Machine Company operated in Rochester from 1920 to 1924. The Home Profit Master Machine became one of the choice knitting machines sought after by hobbyists. - A Novel by Diane Rivoli Chapter 51 LICENSE FOR A VISIT
Naptime was precious. Two or so uninterrupted hours! And there were so many things she could fill those hours with. She could pay some bills or do some house cleaning, maybe fit in a little gardening or do the laundry. Laundry. There was always laundry. Lots and lots of laundry! Or she could just relax with a cup of tea and read a magazine or catch up on emails. When she did that though, it usually ended up that she dozed off herself, her head thrown back and her mouth wide open. Pam usually put Pamela down for her afternoon nap at 2:00 and she woke up about 4:00. ‘Usually’ was the key word here. If there was one thing Pam was learning, it was not to get used to anything. As soon as you thought things had settled into a pattern that you could count on and plan around, that’s when it changed. Babies didn’t care about clocks or timetables. They had no preconceived agenda. Every day was simply a day to be alive! To look and listen and feel! And to soak up the love showered upon them. But today, Pam had really been hoping she could count on ‘usually’. Dixie was stopping by for a short visit with her boyfriend, Mike, on the way back from spending the July 4th weekend with her folks! Expected time of arrival – 4:00. If the baby went down at 2:00 for a two hour nap, Pam could get the house in order while she slept. And when Pamela woke up at 4:00 she would be her brightest and sweetest little angel self, ready to impress and thrill a new set of admirers. Unfortunately, today was not a day for plans to come to fruition. Pamela had not gone down for her nap until 2:45 and Dixie had just called to say that they should be arriving in less than fifteen minutes. The house was still a mess! Boyd had vacuumed earlier, but there were still dirty dishes in the sink. And she didn’t expect Pamela to be up for another hour! Well, maybe it was better that way anyway. They could chat a little and get comfortable before baby commotion entered the picture. And if worse came to worse, Dixie could at least catch a glimpse of a sleeping cherub before she had to leave. Pam hoped they would stay longer than an hour, though. Dixie had stressed that it was to be a short visit because they didn’t want to be an inconvenience. Didn’t she know that she could never be an inconvenience? Besides, they hadn’t seen each other since October and there was so much to talk about! Sure, there was Facebook and they texted, called and emailed from time to time, but that was nothing like real face to face conversation. And they needed time to get to know Mike! Boyd was going to try and convince them to stay for dinner. He was out back now prepping the grill for a homemade grilled pizza! How could they turn that down? And what was that little cooing sound she heard? Was that baby Pamela? Her little darling was waking up at the perfect time after all. Waking up time was precious.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich I hope everyone has been able to enjoy the first couple of months of the New Year. Here at Town Hall we are getting a head start on all the great programs we have planned for this spring and summer. This summer will be filled with many town favorite events like the Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration, our Town’s Summer Concerts at the Hall, and the Jerry J. Helfer Memorial Food Truck Rodeo and new events are planned as well. Keep a look out on more details about these events and many more on my Facebook page. I am pleased to announce that we have begun the process of constructing our Town’s new ADA compliant playground at the Town Hall Campus. When I first took office the Town conducted a community wide survey asking for input on what residents wanted to see done in the Town, and a new playground was nearly at the top on the list just behind the desire of the Splash Park. Thanks in large part to a New York State grant the new playground on Greece Town Hall Campus will soon be a fun environment for kids of all abilities. State funding for the project, secured by Senator Joseph Robach, accounts for 70% of the total project cost. The remaining costs will come from the Recreation Trust fund. This fund is a restricted fund that can only be used for Parks and Recreational expenditures. If you stop by Town Hall Campus you will see the old equipment has been removed to pave way for the new playground. I am excited to say that the new design of this play space will address the needs of every child. Our new playground will encourage children, parents and especially grandparents, of all abilities to experience the benefits of play...together. Keep a look out on my Facebook page, where residents will be able to vote for their favorite animal which will be added to our town’s new playground. Our friends at the library will host a visit with the 2017 “If All of Rochester Reads the Same Book” author Rene Denfeld on March 30 at 7 pm. Denfeld’s novel The Enchanted explores an unexpected enchanted world: death row in an ancient prison. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the library, and a discussion of the book will be held on March 21 at 2 pm. For information or to register for either event, contact the library at 225-8951. If you haven’t been able to make it down to Town Hall make sure to stop by and utilize our Community Ice Rink. We have been very fortunate this year to have weeks of consistently cold weather which has allowed for great ice skating. The addition of the ice rink to our Town Hall campus is another great amenity for Greece residents to come together and enjoy the great outdoors during our win-
ter months. Admission is free to all Greece residents and one dollar for non-residents. For an up-to-date status on whether or not the ice rink is open, please visit the Town’s website under the community and senior center tab. As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other town related issues. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office or visit our website.
Keith Suhr Greece Town Historian
Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich announced the appointment of Keith Suhr as Town Historian for the Town of Greece. Suhr received his Bachelor’s Degree in American Studies from the College at Brockport, and his Master’s Degree in Library and Informational Studies from the University at Buffalo. Keith Suhr “There is no one more talented and justified to be appointed as Town Historian than Keith. His experience in historical research and informational studies makes him a great person for this position. I am looking forward to the many great things Keith has planned for our residents.” said Reilich. For the past year the Greece Public Library has served as Town Historian. Suhr has taking an active role in reorganizing and appropriately cataloging all historical documents, and artifacts presently owned by the Town. With his appointment to this position, Suhr plans to continue his work in obtaining historical documents that have importance to the Town of Greece and adding them into the Town’s collection. Additionally, he has plans in setting up regular office hours for the general public to have access to the collection. “I am both humbled and honored by this appointment and look forward to a long history of providing this valuable service to the residents of Greece.” Suhr said. If you would like to set up an appointment for research opportunities please contact Keith Suhr directly at 7232480. Regular Hours for the public will be set in the coming months. Full Body Workout by Tami Mungenast CPT, CNWC
This fast paced efficient full body fat burning workout can be done at home with minimal equipment (dumbbells, a bench, and exercise mat) or in a gym. It is designed to get a full body workout with cardio benefits in 45 minutes or less. It is a great starter workout for someone just beginning to exercise or to use intermittently when your schedule is too hectic to keep up with your normal exercise program. Be sure to always warm up before beginning. If you are unfamiliar with the specific exercise look on youtube.com or bodybuilding.com for a video to help you see the proper form or consult with a personal trainer. Choose weights that will make 25 reps possible but not too easy. You should feel challenged when you are done with the set. For the cardio interval component use a piece of cardio equipment (treadmill, bike, elliptical) or do jump-
GPAS was founded in 1969 to bring a broad range of artistic activities to Greece. Currently there are five GPAS groups: Greece Symphony Orchestra (Director Dr. David Fetler), Greece Choral Society (Director Dr. Rollo Fisher), Greece Concert Band (Director Jonathan Allentoff), Greece Community Orchestra (Director BJ Comer) and Greece Jazz Band (Director Gary J. Samulski). These groups provide opportunities for hundreds of community residents—both in and out of the Town of Greece—to grow as musicians and artists while performing throughout the Greater Rochester community. GPAS is one of the oldest established nonprofit groups in New York State. Tickets will be available at the door: $8 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. Phyllis Lee Contestable, 69, is a true Rochester success story. A 1964 Mercy High School graduate, she appeared in the off-Broadway show Nunsense, and has toured around the country performing in the critically acclaimed Broadway Musical Sister Act. She has appeared in many other performances sharing her craft of musicality and humor. Phyllis Contestable was raised near Cobb’s Hill and enjoyed her summers on Lake Ontario in Hilton with her family. She graduated from Nazareth College, and entered the convent. She left the convent after 6 years and began to explore the world. “I understand the culture and it is an honor,” Contestable said. Phyllis Contestable is known as Reverend Mother in the entertainment industry for her role in Nunsense. She is passionate about what she does. “She has played that role many times, as have many actresses, but I think she took it to the next level when she created her own Reverend Mother persona and took her on the road,” said Jim Vollerten, CEO, Rochester Association of Performing Arts. Contestable expanded her impact by earning a teaching K12 master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Arts from The College at Brockport. She focused on voice and music, with an eye to mentor future generations. “As an educator I strongly believe in English Language Arts, and the ability to read and write,” said Contestable. She currently teaches at Churchville-Chili Middle School. Contestable will be performing in the upcoming First Rochester Production of Sister Act. Contestable is taking on a lead role in a refreshing musical. “This is a great facility and very professional cast and crew,” said Contestable. The cast also has wonderfully comments about her. Billy a seasoned actor at RAPA, a Rochesterian, and music professor said, “She is wonderful and makes it easy and comfortable to work with her.” Meredith Lipman and Sable Stewart both actresses performing in Sister Act said, “She is a treasure to work with. Everyone in the cast is working together and is focused on entertaining in this hilarious show.” Phyllis Contestable has come a long way, from growing up as a young girl in Cobb’s Hill, to performing on stage, and becoming an educator. She lives in Hilton and often invites cancer survivors to her lakeside home. Her hope is to create a healing place. “I didn’t ask for anything, all of this just happened and it was as if I was meant to do this with my life, the local support in Rochester is great,” said Contestable. Performances of Sister Act are Saturday, March 4, at 7:30PM; Sunday, March 5, at 2PM; Friday, March 10, at 7:30PM; Saturday, March 11, at 7:30PM; and Sunday, March 12, at 2PM. Tickets can be purchased online at www.KodakCenter.org or by calling 585-254-0073. Discounts are available for students and seniors, and half-priced tickets are available for kids 12 and under.
