“Where Have You Gone Joe DiMaggio, Jackie Robinson, and Hank Greenberg: Ethnic Heroes in Baseball’s Melting Pot” A lecture by Dr. William M. Simons on May 12, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Greece Public Library, 2 Vince Tofany Boulevard, Greece. Presented by the Greece Historical Society in collaboration with the New York Council for the Humanities, and the Greece Public Library. As a means of illuminating America’s racial and ethnic past, this lecture examines and compares an iconic baseball triumvirate: Jackie Robinson, Joe DiMaggio, and Hank Greenberg. Prior to the sport’s travails of recent years, baseball long reigned as the undisputed “national pastime.” Then, the microcosm of baseball reflected the main currents of American life and culture. We explore the game’s golden age, when it possessed the power to dramatize the imperfections of the nation’s melting pot. Jackie Robinson’s battle to integrate baseball, for example, symbolized the collective struggle of blacks against racism. Likewise, Italian-American superstar Joe DiMaggio and the Jewish slugger Hank Greenberg possessed profound meaning for their respective ethnic groups. Today, even in its current state, the ascent of Latin and Asian baseball stars provides minority America with symbolic heroes. Dr. William M. Simons is Professor of History at the State University of New York Oneonta College. Dr. Simons is a recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, is a specialist in baseball studies. Simons serves as the Managing Director of the Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture, an annual conference co-sponsored by the National Baseball

Instrumental Music Teacher Jeff Greene said he would get his hair buzzed if the students reach the goal of $5,000. Even though they came up a bit short, Mr. Greene participated and gave up his hair for the good cause. As a tribute and remembrance, he holds a plaque that contains the names of the Stephanie Reeves Scholarship Award winners. Jeff Greene has been teaching at Olympia for over 40 years.

It’s kitten season at GRASP!
by Tami Raco It is that time of year again known in the rescue world as Kitten Season. Many feral and stray cats will become pregnant and have their litters. The shelters will be over run with cats once again, causing more and more animals to be euthanized. Why are there so many cats that are not fixed? Cats, unlike dogs, are allowed to roam and mate. Did you know that a non-spayed female cat, her mate and all of their offspring can reproduce up to 67 cats every 2 years? And this number can just continue increasing to over 2,000 in four years! This very common scenario is why Barb Pingree formed GRASP. It all began many years ago when she worked at an animal hospital where Greece Animal Control rents space. During this time she watched many cats and dogs coming in through animal control being routinely put down if they not claimed. When she began helping she worked on her own to try and find homes for some, took some home with her, and transported some to Lollypop Farm. Often she would leave in tears because she never knew what their fate would be. Before long, Barb and a groomer at the same animal hospital, joined efforts with a few other friends in working together to find homes for the animals, and to raise funds. It was not easy, but the group was dedicated and kept investing their hearts, efforts and time into saving as many cats and dogs as possible. Eventually, more people joined the cause and on February 16, 1996, Greece Residents Assisting Stray Pets Incorporated (G.R.A.S.P., Inc.) was born. In February 1997 the group received its 501C3 non-profit status. Today the group has many volunteers working in different capacities to support the same mission and vision. According to Denyse Clark, on the Board of Directors, kitten season at GRASP can bring in up to 300 displaced cats and kittens. This stresses their resources for volunteers, supplies and funding. As Greece Animal Control brings the animals into their holding area, GRASP volunteers work diligently to save them. They will then need to vet the animal and find a foster home to help avoid the homeless cat from being euthanized. This time of year the fosters fill up quickly and sometimes GRASP cannot take cats and kittens from Animal Control be-
fore their time is up, and they are put down. GRASP is 100% volunteer run. They are always in need of caring individuals to help them save as many pets as possible. If you are interested in helping save a life there are many opportunities to do so. GRASP is in need of the following: • Transport Help: Drivers to help run cats/kittens to their vet visits. • Foster Homes: open your home to a cat or kitten while the rescue actively tries to find him/her a forever home. All vet expenses are covered as well as cat food and litter if needed. • Adoption Counselors: Volunteers to help screen potential adopters for cats and dogs to ensure they are the right fit for the pet. • Core Cat Team Coordinator: A volunteer to help oversee the placement and adoption of cats and kittens. • Donations: Contributions of money, cat food, donut beds, clumping litter, kitten formula and toys are always welcomed. • Adoption: PETCO in Greece hosts adoption events most Thursdays 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturdays 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Come meet the GRASP pets that are looking for their fur-ever home. For more information on adoption, volunteering or donating please visit their website at http://graspinc.org Photos Provided by GRASP

As summer approaches, Town Hall is hard at work planning community wide events. It is finally time to get out of the house and enjoy the warmer weather. As I mentioned in last month’s issue, the splash park is sure to be a highlight this summer upon its completion and we can’t wait for families to begin to enjoy it. The second annual Operation Clean Sweep has unfortunately been delayed due to the rough and lengthy winter Greece has endured. Clean Sweep is a time when community service organizations, students, and residents come together to help ready our parks and roads for usage in the summer time. We are very close to announcing a new date and will have all the information available on our website shortly. The Town of Greece Youth Board will be hosting a Food Truck Rodeo on Town Hall Campus on May 6, 2015. Many different trucks will join us to convert the Town Hall parking lot into a food court for an evening. This event will be held in honor of Jerry Helfer who passed away last year. A memorial scholarship has been set up in his honor, and all proceeds from this rodeo will go towards funding this scholarship. On Thursday May 7, 2015 at 10 AM, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held for our brand new Pickleball courts. Located behind the pavilion, these courts will be the location for leagues that are being formed, as well as casual matches. If you are interested in joining a league, please contact the Community & Senior Center at 723-2425. I hope that residents will take advantage of all that the Town of Greece has to offer in the coming months. As always, should you have any town related issues please feel free to contact my office at 225-2000.

State Farm Insurance A. Christina Breen-Hale has been a State Farm Agent for over 20 years. A native of Greece, New York, Christina was born and raised in Greece and is proud to carry on in the business that her dad Jerry Breen worked in for many years. Her independently owned State Farm Insurance Agency is located at 3093 West Ridge Road in Greece. Christina’s career with State Farm came about over a casual conversation with her dad’s office manager. “He asked me if I ever thought about becoming a State Farm Agent. I thought about it, and had many conversations with my dad who started his career as an agent in 1963. I left my other job and became a team member working for my father for several years. On April 1, 1995, after many years of preparation, I opened my own business that I am very proud of, and years later, I am still proud, celebrating 20 years of working with wonderful good neighbors. It is very rewarding and fulfilling focusing on the needs of others, and is key to success,” Christina says. Christina is a strong leader who has a wonderful team that she could not do without. Team members include Anna Klemenz, Jennifer Mack and Steve Wilcox. “Our motto is Together Each Accomplishes More. Our training and development program is quite extensive for an agent and their team members. You must be licensed by New York State as well as have an agreement with State Farm Insurance Companies. We are committed to customer service, and I enjoy carrying on a legacy that was started 52 years ago by my dad. Christina’s State Farm Insurance office offers Auto, Home, Life, Health, Motorcycle, Business, Disability, Workers Compensation and Recreational Vehicle insurance and Banking services. They care about their customers and strive to provide remarkable customer service. Christina says, “Over the years we have built strong customer relationships with families and friends and have become a trusted advisor to help protect assets that are most valuable to them. We are good listeners, the best part of my position as an agent and business owner, is working with my customers to help them realize their dreams by managing risks and preparing for the unexpected. Over the years I have volunteered for many different organizations and have
a passion for helping people. I’m proud to represent such a wonderful company out of a building that is a landmark in the community.” Being part of a company like State Farm Insurance is very important to Christina. “I believe in a company that started in 1922, I grew up with it, they have a great way of innovation. Spotlight on Business
Frisbees Landscaping by Barbara Burke Lee and Lynn Frisbee, owners of Frisbees Landscaping in Greece, started their business 5 years ago with lawn cutting, over the last four years the business has reshaped into a specialty landscaping business with a focus on the “water garden lifestyle.” “My wife grew up with ponds at her home, and I always liked ponds. We started designing and installing ponds and waterscapes for our home and found eco friendly ponds, healing and therapy gardens, water falls and bubbling rocks are all outdoor and garden water features we loved, and it became our business,” Lee Frisbee says. Frisbees Landscaping is a family owned business dedicated to sharing their passion for the water garden lifestyle. They believe having a peaceful, beautiful space has the power to help people decompress in a hectic world. “The Asian cultures have had therapy water gardens for thousands of years, using them for meditation and other health benefits,” Lee says. Frisbees Landscaping does it all when it comes to water features for your outdoor space. As Certified Aquascape Contractors, Lee and Lynn are members of the largest, most experienced professional pond builder’s group in North America. Certified Aquascape Contractors share the beliefs stated by the organization…”Aquascape’s vision focuses on an ecosystem approach to water features that relies on the most natural evolution, Aquascape strengthens and cultivates its commitment to the environment and the responsible use of water.” “Our approach to business is customer service based. We come to your home, listen to your ideas, and working with you, create your vision. We do our best to incorporate your dreams and make them reality. We take our time, and
a good look at your home from the inside and help with the selection for the best location for the pond so that it is visible from indoors as well. It’s important to place the pond where you can see and enjoy it all the time,” Lee says. Frisbees Landscaping offers Ecosystem Ponds, which are created to be a healthy, happy environment for plant and animal life. Their designs and filtration systems are created to keep maintenance to a minimum. They also design pondless waterfalls which are the perfect option for people who love the sound and serenity of a water feature, and are seeking low maintenance. They also design fountainscapes, a solution for small spaces, or as a feature to add to an existing garden. Frisbees Landscaping also assists with problem solving and solutions for existing ponds. They install paver walkways and patios and do spring and fall pond clean outs. They also provide pond and water feature service and maintenance. On the Frisbees Landscaping website there is this quote by Sara Moss-Wolfe, “Nature is my medicine.” It speaks directly to what Frisbees Landscaping hopes to accomplish in the design and installation of all of their aquascapes. For more information about Frisbees Landscaping visit their website at www.frisbeeslandscaping.com or call 585698-4605.

Greece Police Athletic League
40 years of filling playgrounds not prisons by Tami Raco In 1975 a young Greece Police Officer went to his Police Chief to ask if he could begin the Greece Police Athletic League. As a young boy, this officer participated in the Rochester City Police Athletic League and had positive experiences of learning sports through the volunteer assistance of the Rochester City Police Officers. The Chief agreed he could start the program as long as it did not cost the department any money. The founder of the Greece Police Athletic League is the now retired Chief of Police Gerald Phelan. He began this program in 1975 with 100% fundraising. He aspired to provide this program to the community as a way to get the children involved with the police department. His goal was to keep kids off the streets and involved in positive activities such as sports. Over time, the organization has hosted many different sporting leagues to include boxing, basketball, football and softball. Currently the program is lead by Retired Chief Gerald Phelan’s son; Chief Patrick Phelan, who has been with the Greece Police Department since 1989. Officer Todd Gumaer assists the Chief in this program. Officer Gumaer is in the Community Services department and also serves on the Board of Directors for PAL. The program continues to help teach kids new sports, or help them advance further within a sport while using the Greece Police Officers as instructors and mentors. In addition to learning about sports, it is also about building relationships with police officers in a positive environment. The program is free of charge and remains the only completely free PAL program in New York State. To remain a free of charge organization there is an annual fundraising campaign. Every year the organization does a mail campaign seeking donations to help keep the program thriving. Greece Residents should receive this mailing early this summer. As the PAL program enters its 40th year, it is now beginning to take registration for its annual softball league. Boys and girls aged 6-16 are eligible to participate. All equipment is provided including t-shirts, and an end of season banquet and trophies. In addition to the softball program, they are looking at starting summer golf, and flag football programs.
For more information or to register for the program visit www.greecepal.com. Please register by June 29, 2015. Skills Drills classes begin on July 6, 2015 and the season games begin on July 13, 2015. Donations are always accepted and can be mailed to Greece Police Athletic League, 3177 Latta Road, Suite 405, Rochester New York 14612 Photo by Tom Parsons

Sullivan’s Charbroil & Sully’s Catering by Barbara Burke Sullivan’s Charbroil & Sully’s Catering located at 4712 Ridge Road West in Spencerport is a family business, owned and operated for the past 23 years by Paul Morreale. Paul is assisted in the business by General Manager, Courtney Converse who has been with Sullivan’s for over 30 years, and Manager, Tommy Longo. “We are committed to our business and our community,” Paul says, “Sullivans Charbroil serves up the finest Ground Steak Burgers, Zweigles Hots, and Pulled Pork Sandwich, made with homemade BBQ sauce, all on fresh baked rolls. We also serve Red Osier homespun curly fries and real oldfashioned milkshakes made with 100% custard.” Sullivan’s extensive menu also includes Soups and Salads, made fresh daily, Combo Plates, Dinner Plates and Kid’s Meals. They have a generous Fish Fry served beer battered, breaded, or broiled. For dessert, Sullivan’s offers a full ice cream parlor, serving Hershey’s Ice Cream. Dine inside or out on the deck. Sullivan’s Charbroil also serves breakfast on Saturday and Sunday from 7am-11am. “We serve Homestyle Breakfasts cooked to your order by Patty, a longtime employee,” Courtney says. Stop in to see Courtney and Patty and enjoy a cup of their 89¢ coffee and a delicious breakfast. Their signature breakfast dish is Creme Brûlée French Toast, thick sliced French Toast served with Bavarian Cream and Homemade Carmel Syrup. Another side of Sullivan’s Charbroil is their catering business, Sully’s Catering, managed by Courtney Converse. Catering is available for any size event. “We prepare what you need from a 1/2 pan dish to food for an event with 1,000 people or more,” Courtney says. Sully’s Catering prides itself on their service and the good food they offer for any catering need, including weddings, rehearsal parties, showers, company picnics, birthdays, anniversaries and corporate meetings. “We listen to our customers and provide good service and good food. We work hard to meet their needs by custom creating the perfect menu for any event, and we address, and make
suggestions for, all dietary requirements and limitations,” Courtney says. Sully’s Catering offers catering packages including The Grand Buffet, Classic Picnic, Clam Bakes, and Boxed Lunches for meetings and parties. All are available for large gatherings or small groups. They have brand new menu items including Greek Chicken, Tuscan Chicken, and Courtney’s Favorite which is Grilled Chicken topped with artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes, capers, mushrooms and spinach in a white wine and lemon sauce. Currently very popular for Graduation parties and picnics is the “Sullly’s Slop Plate Buffet,” which is Sully’s version of the garbage plate. Party guests make their own plates from offerings of burgers, hots, macaroni salad, fries, beans, rolls and assorted toppings including Sully’s signature hot sauce. Sully’s catering also specializes in dessert buffets, which can be anything from brownies and cookies to custom wedding cakes. “We catered a wedding where the wedding cake was replaced by our Variety Dessert Table where we prepared a table full of different kinds of whole cakes, everyone loved it,” Courtney says. Call Courtney today to schedule your catering, he will meet with you personally to discuss all the options. Sullivan’s Charbroil is open 7 days a week, Monday thru Friday at 11:00 a.m. for lunch and dinner. Saturday and Sunday they open at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast. Call 585-3525860 for more information on Sullivan’s Charbroil and Sully’s Catering.

“Great pizza starts with great ingredients. Our dough is scratch made by our overnight bakery crew, our sauce is prepared daily and we slice only the finest mozzarella available. We source all of our pizza toppings locally when possible. Produce from local farms and sausage from basilio-buda out of Canastota, NY. We take much pride in the art of pizza making.” Joe Sr., Joe Jr., and Marciano
