Greece Kiwanis - Within this group picture are long time Club members, Bill Joyce, a 50 year member. Kiwanis tradition was always for the branch manager of the Marine Midland Bank to be a member of the Kiwanis, so that was why Bill originally joined the group. He says he has always enjoyed participating in all the Kiwanis events. Ron Arndt is a 40 year member. His Kiwanis experience developed due to an interest in community activities, he also built a lot of friendships through the group. Ray Sunday is a 41 year member. Ray says a friend encouraged him to join and he has developed great friendships and memories as a Kiwanis member. The Greece Kiwanis works as a team on projects, and they work well together. All money raised through projects goes back into the community. Photo by Karen Fien

Greece Performing Arts Society Notable Garden Tour Since 1969 the Greece Performing Arts Society has been bringing quality musical arts and entertainment to the Town of Greece and the entire Rochester area. This not-for-profit organization, which supports five musical groups and a summer theater camp, is funded by memberships, business donations and special fundraising events. In 1997 a committee was formed to begin a new fundraiser - a garden tour which would bring visitors to the west side of the county to see beautiful gardens and be entertained by musicians and artists in the gardens. On Saturday, June 18, 2016, the 20th Annual GPAS Notable Garden Tour will be held from 10am to 4pm, rain or shine, continuing a tradition that is anticipated and welcomed each year by approximately 500 visitors. This year “A Rainbow of Gardens” will feature eight gardens, from “A Multi-Themed Garden” on Stone Road to “An Old and New Garden” on Edgemere Drive. The tour ticket booklet for the self-guiding tour contains a map showing the location of each garden and a description of the garden. Tour visitors will also enjoy live music, visual artists and light refreshments in each garden. In addition a perennial plant sale will be held from 9am to 3pm at 179 Kentucky Crossing. This sale is open to the public with no ticket needed. The Notable Garden Tour and the GPAS GiftWrapping Booth in Greece Ridge Mall in December are the largest fundraisers sponsored by GPAS. The funding is necessary to support the 5 performing groups; Greece Concert Band, Greece Community Orchestra, Greece Symphony Orchestra, Greece Choral Society, Greece Jazz Band, and GPAS Summer Theater Camp. These groups are always looking for new members. Those interested can call the GPAS Hotline 585-234-5636 or visit www.greeceperformingarts.org . Tickets for the Garden Tour are: $17 in advance until June 17, 2016; $22 day-of-tour; $15 for GPAS members. Tickets will be available starting on Mother’s Day, May 8, 2016 at the following locations: Green Acre Farm and Nursery, 3456 Latta Road, 14612, 227-0510 Rockcastle Florist, 870 Long Pond Rd., 14612, 225-3640 VanPutte Gardens, 136 North Ave., 14626, 225-7770 Frear’s Garden Center, 1050 Stone Road, 14616, 663-5130 Faris Pharmacy, 2050 Latta Road, 14612, 663-6950 Provided Information and Photos

A reminder from the Animal Control Office that Spring can bring some wild life issues to home owners. To avoid having unwanted critters on your property keep it as uninviting as possible. Do this by eliminating all food sources from wildlife. This can include your garbage cans, pet food bowls and bird feeders. It is also important to check your roof vents and soffits to eliminate the nesting of animals such as squirrels. Be sure to finish off areas under decks and sheds to prevent animals from nesting and breeding. Most importantly we would like to invite you to our Free Rabies Clinic on Wednesday May 11, 2016 from 5pm-7pm. This free rabies clinic is held at the Greece Highway Department located at 647 Long Pond Road. Free rabies vaccinations are for dogs, cats and ferrets. We ask all dogs are leashed and ferrets and cats are in cages. Pets must be at least 3 months of age. Rabies vaccines are required in NYS for all pets over 4 months of age and are needed to license your dog. For more information call 585-581-4025. Peter Braggins, Greece Police Animal Control Officer

Victory Road Outreach hosts “The Greatest Baby Shower Ever” by Barbara Burke On May 21, 2016 from 11AM to 3PM PetraPlace Counseling Services’ Victory Road Outreach Program will host “The Greatest Baby Shower Ever” as part of their new Mommacare Program. The Mommacare Program is a free program for young moms-to-be that offers support, friendship with others going through the same situation, education from healthcare and social work professionals, and also provides much needed baby care products. Mommacare participants will meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 5:307PM, a light dinner is included at each meeting. During the meetings there will be clinical social workers available to help with questions and concerns of moms-to-be. There will also be trained volunteers that will help program participants find additional resources that are available within the community. Topics of discussion during the program include Dealing With Changes, Becoming A Mom, Getting and Staying Healthy, Understanding Your Body and Planning for the Future. The Mommacare program will officially be launched in September of 2016. “The Greatest Baby Shower Ever” is a community outreach of the Mommacare Program that encourages community members to help the young mothers-to-be by donating baby and mom care items. It will be held on Saturday May 21, 2016 at the Adeline Park Shelter, 124 Armstrong Road, Greece. Adeline Park is a 6.5 acre neighborhood park located in northeastern Greece. The Adeline Park Shelter will be decorated with a Baby Shower Theme. Community members are encouraged to drop in anytime between 11AM and 3PM and enjoy refreshments, activi-

ties, and surprises. Volunteers will be available to answer questions about the Mommacare Program. Please bring a gift of new or gently used baby items which will be given to the new moms in the Mommacare program as they move forward to becoming moms. Most needed items include diapers, clothing and accessories… anything that moms go through a lot of when caring for an infant. (Please note car seats, cribs or walkers cannot be accepted). Andreano Receives “Community Champion Award” by Tami Raco Linda Andreano was elected into her position as Fire Commissioner of the North Greece Fire District in December of 2013. This is a 5 year term and non-paid commitment for Linda. In addition to being one of the Commissioners of the District she is also the Vice Chairwoman of Greece Fire Council. She is the only woman in 93 years to ever hold a Commissioner position in the district as well as the first woman to sit on the Greece Fire Council. Remarkably she is the one of the few people in the district with no firefighting experience. The reason Linda decided to run for this position in 2013 is to give back to the community and district that helped save her life. Linda had a near brush with death in 2003 when she had an ectopic pregnancy. The North Greece Fire Department arrived on scene and made sure Linda got the proper medical attention at the hospital. She was considered dead for a brief moment, and if it was not for the first responder from the North Greece Fire Department, she would not be here today. Linda is a University of Rochester graduate and has lived in Greece for 16 years with her husband, daughter and twin boys. She comes from a corporate project management background and currently owns her own business. Linda balances her time between her family life, running Planet Botanica, and her Fire Commissioner responsibilities. Linda felt the position at the district gave her a perfect opportunity to help the district with their budget planning. The district is made up of five elected Commissioners who serve in non-paid positions. Linda serves as the district’s Public Information Officer, she assists with budgeting and setting the districts tax rate, negotiates and approves purchases, and bills and overseeing projects. She is well acquainted with Article 10 laws which govern the Fire District, and she working closely with the District Attorneys. She also actively works on maintaining a positive ISO rating in the District which directly impacts the home owners cost of fire insurance. All Linda’s hard work and giving back to the community has earned her this most recent nomination for the “Community Champion Award” by the Rochester Professional Consultants Network. She is the winner of the Community Champion Award for providing guidance and direction that

has resulted in a noteworthy improvements within the community. She has been recognized for her contribution as an active member of the Greece Chamber and as the Fire Commissioner of the North Greece Fire District. The 2nd Annual RPCN Awards Gala Dinner was held on April 19, 2016 at the Double Tree Hotel by Hilton on Jefferson Road. When Linda was asked what motivates her to do this work she said, “My passion comes from giving back to my Community, that’s what I am driven by.” Linda also feels honored to be able to work with “some of the best in the business of firefighting.” She said, “If it weren’t for those who helped me, and continue to help me learn my way, I would not be able to perform any of my duties in an effective way.” To learn more about Linda and the North Greece Fire District visit http://www.northgreecefd.com/about/ Photo by Karen Fien

Greece Planning Board Chairman Alvin I. Fisher Receives Award

Longtime Greece Planning Board Chairman Alvin I. Fisher received the 2016 New York Planning Federation John O. Cross Award for Outstanding Planning Board Chair at the NYPF Annual Conference in Saratoga Springs on April 18, 2016. Chairman Fisher has served on the Greece Planning Board for nearly 38 years; 25 of those years as the board’s chair. He has participated in nearly 900 planning board meetings, overseeing the review of several thousand applications for site plan and subdivision approval. According to Monroe County Real Property Data, more than 1/3 of Greece’s housing stock was approved for construction during Chairman Fisher’s tenure. Chairman Fisher is being recognized by NYPF as an outstanding chairman for his ability to constructively involve the public in the planning process, his ability to maintain order in public meetings, and not least of all his longevity as a board member and chair. He strives to ensure that all concerns and opinions are considered in the Planning Board’s decisions, and for this he has gained the respect of town residents and the development community alike. Mr. Fisher is a lifetime Greece resident, a Kodak retiree, and a former School Board member. He has 6 children and 16 grandchildren. Provided Information

Are there secrets to investment success? Many people seek the “secrets” to investment success. Is it timing the market just right when making “buy” or “sell” decisions? Is it finding “hot” stocks? Actually, these types of moves have little relevance to most investors — even the successful ones. Instead of looking for secret winning formulas, follow tried-andtrue investment moves. For example, rather than jumping in and out of the market in a vain attempt to “buy low and sell high,” simply stay invested. By doing so, you can ease the impact of short-term price volatility — and you’ll always be prepared to take advantage of the next market rally. Also, don’t waste time looking for “the ground floor” of the next big thing. The vast majority of new companies won’t achieve that level of success. You’re better off forgetting about the ground floor and instead building a strong foundation of quality investments suitable for your risk tolerance and time horizon. You won’t find any shortcuts to your desired financial destination. But by taking the slow and steady path, you can work toward getting there. Benefits of a CSA for Fruits and Vegetables by Tami Mungenast Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach

What is a CSA? CSA is short for Community Supported Agriculture. CSA is a relatively new idea in farming, but it has been gaining momentum since its introduction to the United States from Europe in the mid 1980’s. The concept originated in Switzerland and Japan, where consumers interested in safe food and farmers joined together in economic partnerships with the farmers. When you join a CSA you are actually buying a share in a local farm. The members who buy a share pay in advance for a growing season which helps allow the farmer to have operating capital. The cost ranges from approximately $400-$700 depending on the farm, what is included and the frequency. Some CSAs offer a half share option for those who have smaller families or want to try it for a year before committing to the full share. The growing season in our area typically starts in June and ends late October. During the growing season members receive a box of produce from their CSA on a regular schedule. Typically pick-ups are once a week at a designated picks up location. What are the benefits of a CSA? Fresh Food! Often farmers pull the food from the ground the same day you get it. CSA produce doesn’t get shipped across the country on trucks or sit on store shelves before you get it. The result is the produce lasts much longer than store bought produce. Fresh picked produce yields higher nutrients and more flavor. Save Money! It is less expensive to buy directly from the farmer than a retailer. You get the benefits of purchasing fresh locally grown produce without the increased prices at the grocery store. The middle man has been eliminated. You also reduce the carbon footprint since your produce does not have far to travel! Getting Closer to Your Food Source = Healthier! By belonging to a CSA you get closer to your food and the people who grow it. As you probably heard often get as close to your food source as possible. CSAs offer you the opportunity to know exactly where your food is coming from and how they are growing it. You can build a relationship with the farmer and learn about the use of chemicals, suggestions on how to cook it, recipes and more! Learning to Eat Seasonally! By receiving your share each week you learn which foods are in season and when they grow. The

CSA helps you learn to look forward to the foods as they are naturally harvested in our own area. Grocery stores have trained us to shop without seasons as produce comes in from all areas of the country and the world. We lost the healthy flow of our local growing seasons in our diets. Seasonal foods vary in nutrients and are body needs more of certain nutrients during different times of the year. It can be healthier to eat produce according to the seasons. Take the Pressure Off! If you don’t have the space time or talent to grow your own food purchasing a CSA lets you rely on a local farmer who does! Even if you do like to grow your own small vegetable garden, use a CSA to supplement what you’re growing. Sometimes our own gardens can be wiped out due to weather or pests. CSA to the rescue! More Home Cooked Meals! By having a tasty assortment of fresh fruit and vegetables you are more likely to cook homemade meals for your family. You may even learn new recipes and improve your cooking skills. Children are more inclined to try new vegetables from “their” farm even when they may have turned up their nose at them in the past. This is in turn provides healthier meals, less money spent and more quality time with the family! Support your local farmers with a CSA as well as supporting a healthier lifestyle for you and your family!

Stream & Lake Map of New York LOST STREAM MAP   The STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK resembles another map - known to Pennsylvania anglers as the “Lost Stream Map.”   The “Stream Map of Pennsylvania” was completed in 1965 after a thirty-year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor.   Professor Higbee succeeded in creating a map of the highest detail possible...a map that shows every stream and lake. He painstakingly plotted by hand, the location of 45,000 miles of streams onto a 3 x 5 foot map.   The map sold extremely well – until it was lost several years after it first appeared in print. Incredibly, the printer entrusted with the original drawing and printing plates declared bankruptcy, then carelessly hauled Higbee’s 30 years of work to the landfill.   The few remaining dog-eared copies became a prized fisherman’s possession. Professor Higbee was offered $400 for one of his last maps. And state agencies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key.   The experts had always told Professor Higbee that reprints were impossible, because the maps were printed in non-photographic blue.   Then, in 1991, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee’s dream came true. Computers made it possible to reprint the map. Holding an updated map, Howard said, “I never thought I’d live to see this day.”   Then, by combining Professor Higbee’s knowledge with computer technology – the STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK was created.

License - A Novel by Diane Rivoli Chapter Eight DOG LICENSE

Owen couldn’t figure out what the big deal was. He could hear his mother crying in the next room. Or was she laughing? Owen shook his head. It wasn’t like his sister Dixie had died or anything! She was just moving into her own apartment. That wasn’t anything to cry about. Not like when Astrid had died. His Mom always told the story of how she was eight months pregnant with him and Gabriel when she had walked down the street to the neighbor’s to see the new litter of puppies. And when she walked back home she had a tiny black pup in the palm of her hand. That was Astrid! Mom said that every morning when she got up she could see with her naked eye that Astrid had actually grown bigger during the night. She grew bigger and bigger and bigger until she ended up weighing one hundred pounds! A few weeks after Mom brought Astrid home, he himself had been born. And seven minutes after that, there came Gabe! With him and Gabe and Astrid being so close in age, it was almost like they were triplets. But none of them looked the same because Owen and Gabe were fraternal twins and Astrid, of course, was a dog. Owen often wished that he and Gabe were identical though. What tricks they could play on people if no one could tell them apart! And Owen and Gabe were all about playing tricks. Astrid was only ten years old when she had died last year but even though ten was young for a human, Dad said it was getting on in years for a big Lab/Shepherd/Samoyed/ Husky mix like Astrid. Up until the day she died, there hadn’t been a day in his life that Astrid hadn’t been there – helping him eat his cereal, chewing on one end of her puppy toy while Owen chewed on the other, chasing Dad’s good tennis balls that Owen threw for her in the back yard or just laying still while Owen hugged her and buried his face in the soft thick fur on the back of her scruffy neck. Nothing seemed the same after Astrid died. He felt lost without her around. They had buried her in the back yard under the tree that she liked to lay under to get out of the sun. She was wrapped in a soft old blanket to keep her warm and they put some of her favorite toys with her to keep her company. Dixie read a poem she had written about how wonderful Astrid was and how lucky everyone in heaven was to have her with them now. They had all cried their eyes out. And even days or weeks later, just when they thought they were done crying, something else would set them off again. Like when Owen found Astrid’s toy gorilla under the couch. He got all choked up and tears started rolling down his cheeks. Mom had started sobbing when a bunch of Astrid’s loose dog hairs appeared out of nowhere and went floating

GreeceNewsNY.com May 2016 25 around on the kitchen floor like a tumbleweed. And he had found Gabe blubbering behind the shed holding one of Astrid’s chewed up tennis balls in his hands. Dad came up with the idea of hanging a plaque on the tree as a remembrance to Astrid. He found a place online that could make the plaque and they sent them a drawing of Astrid that Owen had done himself, which had looked exactly like her, along with some words that Mom had written. The plaque turned out awesome! ASTRID BELOVED FAMILY DOG HER SPIRIT WILL STAY HERE IN THIS YARD TO ROMP AND PLAY FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS SHE WILL REMAIN ALWAYS OUR PUP ALWAYS OUR GUARDIAN AND PROTECTOR He really missed Astrid. He looked at that plaque on the tree whenever he was in the back yard. Would he miss Dixie? Maybe a little. Who were they going to play tricks on now without Dixie around? “Gabe! Gabe! Dixie just left!” Owen whispered loudly, kicking the upper bunk to wake his brother. “So,” Gabe mumbled sleepily “Did you put the spiders in her suitcase?” Gabe bolted upright in his bed and sat there, a wide grin spreading across his face.“That I did, big bro. That I did!” “Awesome! Yah, baby, yah!” ### Look online at www.greecenewsny.com for Chapter 9 on 5/2 and Chapter 10 on 5/9, with Chapter 11 appearing in our June print edition available on May 16, 2016. Greece Choral Society presents Mozart’s “REQUIEM” The Greece Choral Society, directed by Rollo Fisher, will perform Mozart’s “Requiem” on Sunday, May 22, 2016, at 4 PM at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 3003 Dewey Avenue, Greece. The performance will include orchestra and soloists. The soloists are Soprano Kelly Allen, Alto Kathryn Kolyer, Tenor Daren Lopez-Villanueva, Bass Matthew DiDonna. “Requiem” was Mozart’s final work and at the time of his death in 1791, it was unfinished. The composition was completed after his death by a musical colleague. A Requiem is a mass for the dead. Mozart was commissioned by a wealthy patron to compose the work, but it has

been surmised that Mozart intended his “Requiem” to be performed at his funeral. The presentation of the “Requiem” will be preceded by a performance from a Women’s ensemble Rochester Rhapsody. The concert is free with a suggested donation of $5. All donations go to the Greece Perfroming Arts Society which sponsors five musical groups and a Summer Theater Camp. The Greece Choral Society is one of the five groups. For further information call the GPAS Hotline, 585-234-5636 or visit www.greeceperformingarts.org. Provided Information
