Local Students Fast during Hunger for Hope Event by Tami Raco

Ignite Student Ministries, (A youth program at Lakeshore Community Church), conducted their 7th Annual Hunger for Hope event on March 16th and 17th from 5PM to 5PM. Hunger for Hope is an event where students combine a mission experience with a service project. Ignite Ministries is for grades 6-12. Students volunteer to participate in this 24-hour fasting experience at Lakeshore Church. In the weeks leading up to the fasting event students collected canned goods for the Hilton Food Cupboard and raised money in the form of sponsorships. This year 30 local students participated and raised almost $6,000. Jake Cretelle, a sophomore at Hilton High School, raised the most by receiving $450 in sponsorships. Every penny raised is going to the Spark of Hope Mozambique Ministry. Ann Frey, the event leader, has been involved with the youth ministry at Lakeshore for the past seven years. She has also been to Mozambique, a country of extreme poverty in East Africa. According to Spark of Hope leaders, Mozambique is a nation scarred by war, AIDS, corruption, alcoholism, spiritual darkness and poverty. A non-profit organization called Children’s Relief International formed the Spark of Hope mission to create a place where young men and women are encouraged to dream of a better life. In 2014 Ercylio Greva, a professional athlete from Mozambique, visited Hilton School District and was inspired by the school’s library resources to help students. Greva, a Spark of Hope Project leader, was then motivated to build a similar resource opportunity to support students in Mozambique. The monies raised by the students in Ignite Ministry continued on page 6

The water was turned off during the event. Students carried water to the church from the North Greece Fire Department.

will go to help fund tutoring for kids in grades 8-12, meals for students, resources like books, pens and pencils, and mentoring/discipleship assistance. In addition to the canned food drive and raising money through the Hunger of Hope Event, the students experienced fasting from food for 24 hours. Participants had only water and a glass of juice during meal times. This helped them experience what it is like to feel true hunger. “Often kids say they are hungry 30 minutes after they eat a meal. This opportunity gave them a chance to feel real hunger like those in Mozambique,” Ann said. They not only went without food but they also went without running water. The water to the church was shut off and in the morning when the kids woke they had to walk over to the North Greece Fire Department to gather and carry back their own water. “Not having running water also helps the students see through the eyes of others,” said Ann. Ann hopes that

School in Mozambique helped by the Hunger for Hope Event.

Join Braddock Bay Raptor Research in this annual event to learn about hawks, eagles, falcons, owls and others, and support local consercontinued on page 12

when the kids spend time without food and running water it helps them see how much they have, that they take for granted as the result is it will help foster more compassion for others. During the 24 hour Hunger for Hope event at the church, the leaders tie in teaching activities and games to help educate what is like to live in extreme poverty. Students hear stories and skype with Ministry leaders in Mozambique. As they learn they wrestle with the harsh realities of what others face which leads them out of their comfort zones and encourage them to help make a difference. Reflecting on Hunger for Hope Ann says, “I am still amazed and it brings tears to my eyes to think of the way God is at work in Mozambique.” For more information about Ignite Student Ministry or the Hunger for Hope event please visit www. lakeshorechurch.org/h4h

Reflections on the Life of Louise McIntosh Slaughter by Barbara Burke A Celebration of the Life of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, a United States Representative from New York from 1987 until her death in 2018, was held on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 11AM, Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. Seats in the Eastman Theatre were occupied by Congress members and staff from over 15 states, from both sides of the aisle. They flew to Rochester on two jet planes from Washington to pay their respects to Louise Slaughter. The memorial celebration was also attended by many of Louise’s contemporaries in Washington including Congressman John Lewis, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, and Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton. Former United States President Bill Clinton was in attendance. Louise Slaughter’s family, personal friends and staff members filled many of the seats. The remainder of the seats in the 2,500 capacity hall were available to Louise’s constituents, the people she represented for over 30 years in the Rochester, Buffalo and Niagara Falls area. Community members began lining up early on a cold Rochester morning for the first-come, first-served tickets. The Service was led by several local Interfaith leaders including Rev. Ruth Ferguson, Rev. Dr. Marlowe V.N. Washington, Rabbi Debbi Till, Rev. Bob Werth, and Muhammad Shafiq, Ph.D. Music for the celebration was performed by the Eastman Wind Ensemble Harmonie, Eastman Chorale, AKOMA African American Women’s Gospel Choir, the Anthem, “His Eye is on the Sparrow” was performed by soloists Brianna J. Robinson and Veena Akama-Makia with Wilson Sutherland on piano, and fiddle/folk band The Ginger Majority performed the musi-

cal interlude during the closing Spiritual song “I’ll Fly Away” with soloist, Shelly Fowler. The following reflections on the life of Louise Slaughter were shared with the gathering.

Louise McIntosh Slaughter continued from page 15

Congressman John Lewis Congressman Lewis and Louise were in the same Freshmen Orientation class when they started serving in Congress. They were elected together, and friends from the start. Lewis said, “Louise Slaughter was one-of-a-kind. Generous, friendly and warm. She was determined and stood up for her beliefs, she was strong, and she was solid, and she didn’t take any ‘stuff’.” “We shared a love of the arts and Louise especially loved music.” “Louise loved people. She was a champion. She believed deep down in her heart that government can do good for the people. She never gave up. For her, work was a calling, a mission. She was our leader, our friend. She was my sister, that is why I call her Sister Louise.” In 2016 Louise invited Congressman Lewis to visit her district. “She took me to a church Frederick Douglass attended. She was very proud of the history of her district.” She took him to the motherhouse of retired Sisters of St. Joseph. Congressman Lewis said, “It was there that I met two nuns who had taken care of us when we were hurt in Selma, Alabama in 1965. Looking back at that moment demonstrated to me the true nature of Louise this beautiful, unbelievable, gifted, loving sister.” House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi Democratic Leader Pelosi appointed Louise Slaughter as the first woman chair of the Rules Committee. They worked closely together on many bills before Congress. Pelosi said, “Louise felt a deep pride in representing this area.” “It was important to her to mentor young women staff and other members of Congress. She encouraged women to know their power.” “She was the first woman chair of the Rules Committee. She was a patriot who fought to advance and expand freedom in America. A crusader for ethics and honoring the public trust.” “A micro biologist and a visionary. She was a women of grit and grace. Thank you to Louise’s family for sharing this beautiful woman with the world.” Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton Secretary Clinton and Louise Slaughter worked together on many advancements for the State of New York. Clinton said, “We gather here for an extraordinary outpouring of love, love for Louise. She got into politics to make a difference. We need more Louise Slaughters today, more than ever.” “Nothing could stop Louise once she made up her mind, fierce and determined yet savvy. Her opponents liked and respected her. There was no one better to have in your corner than Louise.” “What was so incredible about Louise was she was always looking to the future. In the midst of it all she always supported science, facts, reason and evidence in all of her decisions.” “Advancing the rights of women and girls was a big part of her life. She was proud of the history of her district in the role of the Women’s Movement. She fought for generations to come, the future. She supported the history of the Women’s Movement

GreeceNewsNY.com May 2018 17 and knew that they were right all those years ago to fight for equality.” “She encouraged everyone to fight for what you know in your heart is right. She served the community, doing it with a sense of humor, respect and decency. Louise, you will be dearly missed but never forgotten.” Fran Weisberg In 1986 Fran Weinberg was Louise Slaughter’s first campaign manager. They met when they served together in support of a local grassroots movement. Weisberg said, “Southern charm, a brilliant mind and a fierce desire to help people much less fortunate than herself were the traits of Louise Slaughter. She never backed down from a challenge. What drove Louise was her personal integrity. She truly helped people and everyone loved her.” “She especially loved campaigning door to door. People in every walk of life learned that Louise was for them. The most amazing thing about Louise is that she never changed in the 32 years she served, she never forgot who brought her to Washington.” “She always remained humble. She put concern for others above herself. We can all strive to achieve to be more like Louise by caring for one another.” Amy Slaughter - Daughter “It is such an honor to be here and to know how many people cared about her and loved her. I want you to know how important that is to our family. Thank you so much.” “It is hard to sum up the life of someone as big as my mother. She was a coal miner’s daughter. I want people to remember that she came from humble roots but was outspoken.” “She was a no-nonsense person who was very funny. She traveled the world but always had time for her family. I’m certain that she will be remembered as the amazing person that she was.” “Our family takes great comfort in knowing that she was loved.” Michael Minerva - Son-in-Law “Her presence in our children’s lives helped shaped their lives. She fought tirelessly for the ideals and causes she believed in. Empathy, standing up firmly for what you believe in and never giving up, I consider these to be the gifts Louise left for our children and all of us.” Lauren Secatore - Granddaughter I’ve always thought about her as my Grandma, the Congresswoman. It was not a sacrifice to share her with everyone, it was an honor. She taught me to be strong. It is up to all of us to carry on her legacy through a life of action.” Daniel Secatore - Grandson “I am going to miss her. She lived a great life. None of us were ready to see her go, and I don’t believe she was done fighting. It isn’t our choice that she is gone, but we have a choice to honor her for the rest of our own lives. She took so much joy from everything in this world. She had joy and pride in her job and in her role in our American democracy. She loved the world so much that she couldn’t help but to fight for it. That is how we can honor her by fighting for our country and being responsible for it and to try to see the world as she did. That will be the best way honor her.” For many more pictures of this event visit www.GreeceNewsNY.com Photos by Karen Fien

The nine Boy Scout Troops, five Crew 277 from Greece and Boy Scout Troop 165 from Spencerport volunteers. Cub Scout Packs and one Venturing Crew consisted of 375 youth and 330 adult volunteers. They were able to help out two community Food Shelves with 211 boxes of food, weighing about 2.4 tons. The Scouts appreciate the great support we get from the community each year for the Scouting for Food Drive. Provided Information Photos by Karen Fien

Town of Greece Receives Nine New Sanitary Pumps Liberty Pumps has provided the Town of Greece with nine new sanitary pump station units free of charge. The first two locations were installed in pump stations on Lakeshore Drive and Edgemere Drive near the Kodak facility. These stations saw excessive use during last year’s flooding events. Liberty Pumps will obtain readings from the locations to test their units. At the peak of the flooding last year, Town of Greece DPW staff deployed and maintained, around the clock, approximately 41 pumps ranging from 4” to 8” in an effort to keep flood waters from making our roads impassable. Basically, pump hoses were placed in the storm sewer at the storm grates, which threw the surging waters back into the ponds and the lake. In continued efforts to limit potential floodwater damages this year, Greece is pleased to accept nine new sanitary sewer pumps from Liberty Pumps. This will help both the Town of Greece with potential flooding and will provide Liberty Pumps with data as they will be obtaining readings for the pump locations to test their units. Headquartered in Bergen, NY, Liberty Pumps is a leading U.S. manufacturer of pumping products for ground water and wastewater removal in residential and commercial applications. “I was pleased to work with Liberty Pumps to upgrade our facilities with their pumps at no cost to local taxpayers, while assisting them with gathering data from the units. I will continue my efforts to employ preventive measures to help ensure water front residents are not exposed to the devastating damages that occurred last year and to do all we can to limit damages in the event of a repeat of last year’s rising waters,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said. The following events help support Greece Food Shelf through the summer months when children are home from school with less access to free breakfast/lunch programs. There is always a need for more volunteers. In addition to these two important events, drivers are needed. Drivers can volunteer their time as little as one day each month or more often if desired. Call 277 5370 to join us. This is also an opportunity to meet a lot of nice people within our community. The CROP WALK provides the opportunity to donate, walk, or volunteer on May 6th at 1:00 PM at Messiah Lutheran Church at the corner of English and Mt Read Blvd. If you wish to donate and to walk, contact your local church or call the Food Shelf at 277 5370. The walk can be as short as you can manage or it can follow an outlined path with other walkers. Afterwards, join us at Messiah Lutheran for food and fun. Most of the money from the CROP WALK stays locally with a portion going to end state, federal, and international hunger, a lot of good comes from this commitment. All ages are encouraged to join in, and this is the perfect time for kids to understand that there are those who are hungry and they can help. It is also an excellent opportunity to educate our youth on the value of helping others. The annual postal workers food drive “STAMP OUT HUNGER” is scheduled for Saturday, May 12th. While shopping consider picking up non-perishable food items to leave for your mail carrier to pick up on Saturday, May 12th. Your mail carrier will pick up your donation when the mail is delivered. Nuts for Health by Tami Raco, Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach Eating a small handful of nuts regularly can bring many health benefits and may even help you live longer by lowering risks for certain diseases. How can nuts improve your health? •Improved Heart Health - People who eat the most nuts have a 33 percent decrease in the risk of having coronary heart disease and nuts provide a lower risk of cardio vascular disease according to a medical reviews (BMC Medicine 2016). Research states that the high levels of fiber, polyunsaturated fats and magnesium can help lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and lower levels of inflammation that is linked to heart disease. Eating nuts may also lower your risk of developing blood clots and improving the lining of the arteries. •Live Longer - People who consumed a minimum of 20 grams of nuts per day were 22 percent less likely to die prematurely. According to a 2013 New England Journal of Medicine Study with over 75,000 women and 40,000 men, a diet with regular consumption of nuts lowered premature mortality. •Enhanced Cognitive Function - Research on 15,647 older women in a Nurses’ Health Study indicates that the higher the consumption of nuts the better overall cognition function, especially in women. This may be linked to the high fat content in nuts and the brain being primarily made up of fat. These results are published in the May 2014 Issue

of the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging. •Healthy Weight Management - Nuts are high in calories but are excellent sources of protein, fiber and healthy fats which help manage weight and curb appetite. When researchers put overweight adults on a diet with nuts compared to those without, they lost more weight and kept it off longer. This study is published in the International Journal of Obesity and Realted Metabolic Disorders. •Reduce Risk of Diabetes and Cancers - Studies show that people who eat more nuts have less risk of diabetes and pre-diabetes syndromes. Adults who added two ounces of pistachios a day to their diet improved their insulin response according to a study from Spain in 2014. Studies also show that a handful of nuts a day can lower cancer risk by 15 percent, this may be caused by the high level of antioxidants in nuts that help improve cell health. •Taste and enjoyment - Nuts are rich in flavor and texture. They are satiating from their high fat content and help keep you full longer than many other foods. Snacking on a handful of nuts can also help satisfy the craving for crunch and salt as well as being nutritious. Are all nuts created equal? No they are not which is why it’s a great idea to have a variation of nuts in your diet. Choose a variety to maximize the health properties. Avoid nut varieties that are coated in sugar or salt. Nuts are calorically rich so portion control is important. One to two ounces most days of the week is recommended. Eating nuts as part of a healthy diet can be beneficial especially if replacing refined processed foods and carbohydrates.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich Although it’s been a chilly Spring so far, warmer weather is on its way to Greece! Here at Town Hall we are preparing for all of our fun Spring and Summer programs. Make sure to mark your calendars for our annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 28th. Also be on the lookout for details about our Jerry J. Helfer Memorial Food Truck Rodeo, Greece Summer Concert Series, and the beloved Old Fashioned 4th of July event. I am excited to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the much- anticipated Chick-Fil-A this month! This Georgia-based fast food chain will include two drive-thru ordering lanes, a two-story playground for children, and both indoor and outdoor seating. The 5,056 square foot restaurant is expected to employ over 100 people. I am always happy to welcome new businesses to the Town of Greece and am very excited that Greece was chosen to be the location for the first Chick-Fil-A in Rochester. For the fourth year in a row, the National Recreation and Park Association is collaborating with The Walt Disney Company for the national “Meet Me at the Park” Earth Month Campaign. The town that receives the most nominations will receive a $20,000 grant to improve a local park. Throughout my career, I have supported parks as a way to improve quality of life. In Greece, we have over 300 hundred acres of parkland available to us, which include playgrounds, trails, open space and athletic fields. Our parks have become gathering spaces for those young and old of any ability and it is my goal to keep improving these local treasures. This Earth Month, Greece can show what parks mean to our community by nominating our great town! Encourage your friends to nominate Greece parks by taking a selfie in your favorite park and using the hashtags #MeetMeAtThePark, #Parkies and #CelebrateEarth. For more information and to nominate Greece parks, visit www.NRPA. org/DisneyMeetMeAtThePark. You may have heard that the Town of Greece has begun creating and installing signs for Greece Town Parks that will provide relevant contact and location information in the event of an emergency. The first sign has already been installed at Badgerow Park South. It features the Town of Greece seal and reads “In The Event Of An Emergency Call 911 – Your Location Is Badgerow Park South 1120 Latta Road”. The Town of Greece Department of Parks and Recreation, along with the Department of Public Works, are working on placing similar signs at all Greece Town Parks. As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other Town-related issues. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office or visit our website.

Digital Divide Spurs Demand for Volunteers An explosion in demand for computer help has led to a critical shortage of volunteers who work to meet the need. Digital Literacy, which places volunteers in local libraries to help patrons learn basic computer skills and complete computer-essential tasks, is experiencing an ever-increasing demand for its services. “Over the last three years,” says program coordinator Brian Kane, “we’ve gone from serving 600 people to nearly 3,500. There is a huge Digital Divide in the Rochester area. Our program relies heavily on volunteers, and we need more volunteers to help.” Digital Literacy trains volunteers and places them in local libraries, where they assist patrons in learning basic computer skills like navigating the web or using Word. They also help patrons complete computer-essential tasks, like creating online accounts, developing resumes, searching for jobs and getting social services. According to the U.S. Census, about 20% of Rochester households do not have computers. For the Town of Greece, that number is nearly 11%. Digital Literacy places and supports volunteers in ten locations around the county. Volunteers are needed. Volunteers need three years of experience on a PC, knowledge of Google and its apps, an ability to work with diverse people, patience and flexibility.
