Regional meeting on Landmark Society Affiliate Program brings local officials and preservationists to Brockport by Kristina Gabalski

Officials and historic preservation-minded residents from both Monroe and Orleans Counties took part in a regional meeting Thursday, October 5, at the Red Bird Cafe in Brockport, held by the Landmark Society of Western New York. The Landmark Society has worked the past two years with three local communities, including the Village of Brockport, to develop an Affiliate Program, and now Landmark Society officials say they are ready to expand the program to include local preservation organizations and efforts. “Building a network in the region is the most important part of the Affiliate Program,” said Larry Francer, associate director of preservation at the Landmark Society of Western New York, who led the October 5 meeting. Francer said the program will bring local communities together, “to learn from successes and failures and to see that you are not alone.” The two other local communities involved in the pilot program were the Village of Perry and the Village of Seneca Falls. Francer described how the pilot programs had worked in each of the three communities, where the Greater Brockport Development Corporation (GBDC) agreed to expand its mission to include preservation and to be a resource for the area. He also detailed organization and individual benefits for organizations which would like to become part of the Affiliate

Program. Those benefits include reduced membership dues for the Landmark Society, as well as priority consideration for the Preservation Grants Fund, direct access to the professional services of the Landmark Society’s staff and Affiliate Council meetings for exchange of news, resources, techniques, and/or informational speakers. Residents and leaders from the Towns of Greece and Henrietta attended, as did a member of the board of directors of the Cobblestone Museum located in Orleans County. Gina DiBella, of Greece, is part of a grassroots effort to “Save the DeMay” - the historic Hotel DeMay located at the intersection of North Greece and Latta Roads. The 108-year old building is in danger of being torn down for the construction of a gas station and convenience store, DiBella said. “We have no quaint Main Street,” she observed of Greece. “We are trying to preserve the little bits of history left here.” Les and Ellie Carr of Greece also attended. They are a part of the Save the DeMay effort. The Carrs held their wedding reception at the DeMay and said the preservation and repurposing of the hotel might result in a re-birth of the N. Greece/Latta hamlet. “It could be good for the heart of Greece,” they said. Greece Planning Board Chair Al Fisher attended the meeting and noted it is important for the town to interface with

A Soldier’s Story by Tami Raco

Sean Smith spent his childhood growing up in the 10th Ward in Rochester on Lakeview Park. A year after graduating from high school he went onto college and spent a year at Oneonta. Sean drank alcohol like many college students do, after a year of the college lifestyle he felt a calling to do more with his life. His grandfather served as a Fighter Pilot in WW2 and his Dad served in Vietnam. Sean felt serving the country would give him the purpose he was seeking. He hoped to join the Army and go right into Ranger School to become part of one of the world’s most elite fighting forces. But at the age of 21, when Sean enlisted, he did not qualify for Ranger school. A physical Sean competing in Best Ranger’s Competition in Fort Benning, Georgia. revealed that he had internal bleeding which made him ineligible for Ranger School, he believes the internal bleeding was caused by in Alaska. The Army was a good fit for Sean. Immediately after his four year enlistment he enlisted in the National heavy drinking. Guard. He received promotions and accolades such as Sean joined the Army for a four year enlistment (1999“Post Soldier of the Month.” He also enrolled at MCC as a 2002) and spent most of his time in an infantry unit serving History Education major and took a position in the Honor Guard to perform military burial services. About 6 months after returning home Sean began to “Growing for Red Jacket drink heavily. Despite his drinking, he continued performCider a Brighter Available ing well in the National Guard and maintained an A averFuture!” age in college. After the 9/11 tragedy Sean was called up. He moved to the Syracuse base and spent almost two years there. He limited his partying to the weekends. Order He began to feel more depressed and more anxious and SEASONED his addiction to alcohol continued to grow. In 2007 Sean FIREWOOD was activated for deployment to Afghanistan. Black Man White Man by Barbara Burke

As an only child Joe Janowicz found friendship in comic books, he loved them and collected them. During high school at Greece Arcadia he created his own comic book, telling his stories and drawing the characters. Joe then went to college, married, raised children, and retired from a career at Eastman Kodak Company as a Writer and Producer. After retirement Joe was looking for a second chapter to his life in addition to helping to raise his grandchildren. “Fifty percent of the time I worked at Kodak I was traveling

all around this country and the world. I really loved my job. I wanted by retirement years to be about family and pursuing my interests,” Joe said. Joe noticed the recent resurgence of his childhood comic book heroes at the movies and on television. He started thinking about writing comic books, and then he started writing. Through a mutual friend Joe was introduced to comic book artist/illustrator Nigel Carrington, a self taught artist who moved to Rochester from Trinidad with his family in 2001. Nigel moved here with a desire to become a comic book artist. Joe invited Nigel to his home to see his comic book collection. As they became acquainted Joe showed Nigel the script he had written for his comic book and asked Nigel if he was interested in illustrating it. “When I first read it I thought this is cool, the concept really stood out to me. Joe wrote the comic book story like a film script. I come from a comic book background so after I started drawing it I gave Joe little tips on changes that work better in comic book style. Tips like putting more action in there and creating more drama, and having the killer in the darkness. In comic books there is no motion or music to help carry ideas through, just the opposite of film which is where Joe comes from. He was open to all my suggestions. There was a lot of collaboration, we worked well together,” Nigel said. Their comic book is titled Black Man White Man printed by Rochester based printing company Printing Plus owned by “comic book fan” Tony Burris. The comic book is 30 pages, in full color, and intended for mature readers. The first issue was introduced at this year’s RocCon!, Rochester’s version of the popular pop culture event which includes the worlds of Comic Books, Sci-Fi, Anime and Gaming, held at the Kodak Event Center on September 15-17th. Both men participated in the event, Nigel was an artist “Guest of Honor” and displayed his artwork on Black Man White Man and other books he has illustrated. Joe participated in a panel discussion on “How to continued from page 19

Produce Comic Books.” Black Man White Man is a comic book mystery with murder, conflict and intrigue designed to keep the reader involved and guessing who the real killer is. It features a diverse cast of characters, and many Rochester locales and landmarks. A murder mystery, the story revolves around a black police detective who, at night, transforms into a white man who is a serial killer. Both Joe and Nigel feel the story is a captivating idea that has never been done before. “We did this together. It is a crossing of cultures, a story we sculpted together. Nigel felt this is something he had to draw and I felt this is something I had to write,” Joe says. A portion of the money from every comic sold in Rochester will be donated to Rochester City Schools and Greece Schools arts programs to further the development of aspiring middle and high school art students. Joe and Nigel are also developing a workshop for students to help foster the growth of art students across all the local communities. Currently Black Man White Man is available exclusively at Rhino’s Comics and Collectibles, 22 Sutorius Drive (off Dewey Avenue), in Greece. Photos by Karen Fien

and later the loss of his home. He was unemployed and was sinking deeper into his dark depression. Sean’s family and friends became increasingly concerned with his drinking. Despite his relapse they were incredibly supportive in helping him get sober. His Dad and some friends held an intervention. Sean willingly agreed to be admitted into in patient addiction treatment. After another relapse, the turning point for Sean was that he was finally admitted into the Bath VA Domiciliary program. They addressed his addiction and worked on his anxiety and depression. Although this was not Sean’s last relapse or rehab stay, it was the turning point where Sean began to understand what caused his relapse and recognized the positive steps that would support his recovery. The recovery communities and Sean’s active lifestyle were critical to helping him combat the depression, anxiety and the alcoholism. Sean had another Middle East deployment to Kuwait. He looked forward to it he missed the satisfaction and accountability his overseas deployments brought him. Sean went on to serve another tour. His sobriety again became derailed when he returned home. This time after his rehab stay he did not return to his family, he moved into the Richards House, a home owned and operated by the Veterans Outreach Center. The Richards house serves male veterans that are home-

less or in a time of transition. “The Richards House was the best thing that ever happened to me,” Sean said. In the Richards House Sean met a strong group of guys doing all the right things. They took him under their wing. Patrick Mullin, a veteran of the Air Force, was someone Sean met and bonded quickly to. After these connections Sean recalls his recovery moving from his head to his heart. The Richard House transitioned Sean to the Colgate House and Sean began to learn to understand what it was like to live in recovery. As Sean became more rooted in his recovery good things began to come back to his life. He began to use the experiences from his journey to recovery to give back to others. He went back to college to become a Drug and Alcohol Counselor. He then became employed by the Veterans Outreach Center to help find veterans housing. Sean continued working on his recovery, and continued with his work and the National Guard. In 2014 Sean’s dream of being a Ranger came true. This is highly unusual, he was 37 years old. Sean continued giving back. He co-founded a program called Battle Buddy’s at the Veterans Outreach Center. The Battle Buddy program was set up to be a peer-to-peer mentoring effort combined with a social interaction component for veterans, service members and their families. Sean’s hard work and commitment was recognized at the 2016 Stars and Stripes Annual Gala. Sean and his fiancé Yana started an outdoor recovery continued on page 20

At an age where most infantry soldiers begin to retire, Sean, who is 40, was invited to compete in the Army’s premier challenge; The 2017 Best Ranger Competition. Sean was one of 106 chosen in the world to participate in this ultimate challenge. The challenge is a 62 hour physically and mentally grueling event testing the Ranger graduates skills and endurance. The Arts in Greece are Teaming-Up for the Biggest Project…Yet Earlier in 2017 The GreecePerforming Arts Society’s (GPAS) President, Eric Vaughn Johnson, announced the reopening of The Greece Theatre Company as part of the Next Chapter rebranding initiative. The Greece Theatre Company will act as a vehicle of collaboration between The Greece Choral Society, Greece Concert Band, Greece Orchestras, Greece Jazz Band, and Greece Central Schools all while putting on high quality works of theatre for the community featuring actors of all ages. partnership, as well as the new Young Artists Competition in December, will be the first of many youth-based projects GPAS is initiating in their rebranding. Johnson is no stranger to forming community partnerships. In 2014 he worked with Facing Race, Embracing Equity for a benefit production of The Wiz at the Rochester Science Museum. In 2015 he brought RAPA and the Rochester Latino Theatre Company together to produce the first Rochester production of In the Heights for three weekends of sold-out performances. In 2017, Johnson continued his collaboration with the LGBT Giving Circle, the Gay Alliance and Broadway Cares to produce The Wild Party: The Musical, after originally forming the partnership in 2015 for Bare: A Pop Opera and in 2016 with Spring Awakening. Johnson welcomed Janine Mercandetti as the new GPAS

GreeceNewsNY.com November 2017 23 Artistic Director to lead the project. “The unique structure of GPAS provides a wonderful opportunity for the revived theatre leg of the organization,”said Mercandetti. “The theatre company allows all legs of the group to collaborate and grow together to give Rochester audiences an exciting theatre experience.” The Hunchback of Notre Dame performance dates include Friday, October 20 at 7:30 pm; Saturday, October 21 at 7:30 pm; Sunday, October 22 at 6 pm; Thursday, October 26 at 7:30 pm; Friday, October 27 at 7:30 pm; Saturday, October 28 at 7:30 pm; and Sunday, October 29 at 6 pm at the Lyric Theatre, 440 East Avenue. Tickets are available online at www.GreecePerformingArts. org and at all area Wegmans. Tickets are $25 for adults and $22 for seniors and students. Why Can’t I Just Do Cardio? by Tami Mungenast CPT, CNWC

This question is especially common among women who believe weight training is more for men. The truth is that both cardiovascular training and resistance training are equally important for health. Cardiovascular training provides many health benefits. It is great for improving your heart and lungs as well as burning more calories. It can also help regulate blood sugar levels. What it doesn’t do is increase your resting metabolism or increase bone density like regular resistance training does. Weight training helps both males and females. Regardless of your age, regular resistance training can raise your resting metabolism by increasing your active muscle tissue, this means you burn more calories at rest and in movement! Regular resistance training can also help you improve your bone density, which will reduce the risk for osteoporosis as well as decrease your risk for injury. This is especially continued on page 34
