Greece Historical Society Lecture Series Why History is Essential by Devin Lander, New York State Historian Tuesday, November 13, 2018 Greece Public Library • 7:00PM As historians and lovers of history, we all should all be able to clearly articulate the value of history to society at large. But, do we? Devin Lander is New York’s 16th State Historian. Previous to being named Devin Lander State Historian, he was the Executive Director of the Museum Association of New York (MANY) and worked as Deputy Legislative and Policy Director for the Chair of the New York State Assembly’s Tourism, Arts, Parks and Sports Development and Governmental Operations Committees. Coffee and Health by Tami Mungenast CPT CNWC One of America’s favorite beverages is coffee and thanks to a high level of antioxidants it also one of the healthiest! There has been many studies on the health benefits of java, and they have shown coffee to lower the risk for several serious diseases. Aside from providing a jolt of caffeine, 1-3 cups of coffee a day have been linked to lowering the risk of Cardiovascular Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, Parkinson Disease, certain types of cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease. The coffee bean is a rich source of antioxidants. Many of the nutrients in coffee make their way into the finished brewed beverage. A single cup of java contains Riboflavin (B2), Pantothenic acid (B5), Manganese, Potassium, Magnesium and Niacin (B3). In addition to these nutrients, coffee also has several bioactive compounds that have been proven to reduce the risk for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson continued on page 10

Coffee and Health continued from page 8

According to John Hopkins Medicine these are some of the top benefits of drinking coffee: 1.  Less likely to develop heart failure. Drinking 1-2 cups a day may ward off heart failure when a weakened heart has difficulty pumping enough blood to the body. 2.  Less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s Disease. The caffeine in two cups of coffee a day provide significant protection against both of these conditions especially in women 65+. It is also shown to help with the symptoms of those living with Parkinson Disease. 3.  Less likely to suffer a stroke. Especially for women who

drink at least one cup per day, they have lower stroke risks. Strokes are the 4th leading cause of death in females. 4.  Reduced risk for colon cancer. Research shows that coffee drinkers have a 26 percent less chance to develop a colorectal cancer. 5.  Improved glucose (sugar) process. Studies show that those who drink coffee regularly have lowered risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes. Excessive caffeine consumption can be unhealthy. Too much caffeine can cause you to be jittery and increase the heart rate and blood pressure. It can also create anxiety and interrupt your natural sleep cycle. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans it is safe for most to drink 35 cups of coffee a day (maximum intake of 400 milligrams of caffeine). Also keep in mind that what you add to your coffee can turn it from healthy to unhealthy. Be careful with adding too much sugar and syrups to coffee which can pack on the calories and the pounds. Try this healthy, delicious coffee recipe: Pumpkin Spice “Latte” Smoothie Blend all ingredients to create this fun seasonal drink. 1 cup coffee ½ cup milk of your choice, such as unsweetened vanilla flavored almond milk 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice, (or ½ teaspoon each ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and allspice) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup canned plain pumpkin, using real pumpkin adds fiber! 4 ice cubes Lightly sweeten as needed, Stevia or a packet of Splenda

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich Fall is both a fun and beautiful season. Not only do we get to appreciate all of the colorful foliage, we also get to enjoy apple cider, donuts, bonfires, festivals, and all of the other fun festivities that come along with this season. Looking back we have seen Town Board recognitions of new business openings, the Glimpses of Greece Photo Contest submissions, new services at the Greece Town Court, and a shredding event. Coming up, be sure to mark your calendars for our annual Family Halloween Party! During September’s Town Board Meeting, we recognized Greece resident Niayah Blair for being the first woman to complete the Monroe Manufactures Job Program. She is also the first woman mold making apprentice at Romold, Inc. and in the entire state of New York! We also presented a proclamation and medal to Dylan Austin in celebration of his recent achievement of Eagle Scout ranking. In order to attain this, Dylan coordinated efforts to clean up and landscape an area of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. This past month we hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for Family First Credit Union, which is the first branch located on the West side of Monroe County. Coming up, we have several new business ribbon cuttings scheduled. Keep an eye out for all of the new businesses in town! The Greece Public Library recently held the 4th annual Glimpses of Greece photo contest. This popular photo contest sees participation from both youths and adults. Photos are judged by the age of the submitter and by different categories, such as Autumn Beauty of Greece and Unique Architecture of Greece. All of the winning photographs will be displayed in the Glimpses of Greece Calendar. One of the many new services we have brought to the Town of Greece this summer is nCourt. nCourt is currently being implemented in our Greece Town Courts and will allow defendants to make payments online at www.paycourtonline.com or by calling a toll free number (1-888-912- 1541). This new payment process provides a convenient service both to our residents and to out- of-town ticket holders. Our 2nd shredding event of the year was held this past month. Hundreds flocked to the Greece Town Hall Campus to take advantage of the free shredding service we offered. It can be very expensive to have a shredding service come to a resident home, so we were glad to be able to provide this service for our residents free of charge! As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other town related matters. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office or visit our website. Be sure to mark your calendars for our annual Family Halloween Party! This event is for Greece residents only and will be held Friday, October 26th from 6pm – 8pm. Call the Community Center at 723-2425 for more information.

A Baseball Life Through the Lens by Barbara Burke He started out the same as many kids his age growing up in the 70s as 9-10-11 year olds, collecting baseball cards. But Joe Territo looked at the cards differently than his friends did. “All my friends were interested in the back of the card, reading and studying the stats. I liked the pictures, I was drawn to the pictures, not because I liked the way the player looked, it was the whole picture and how it was composed. I was always drawn to sports pictures. I used to cut them out from Sports Illustrated and hang them on my wall. I chose the pictures, not because I liked the player, but because I liked the picture. That is when as a child I started to develop my eye for photographs and sports imaging,” Territo said. For the past seven seasons life-long Greece resident and Olympia High School graduate Joe Territo has been the team photographer for the Rochester Red Wings. Territo has always been a Red Wings fan. His dad took him to the games at the old Silver Stadium on Norton Street when he was growing up. As a kid team picture day was his favorite game day. “As soon as I got the picture I would sit in the stands and study it and memorize the players. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would one day be taking the team picture and watching kids in the stands studying my photograph of the team,” Territo said.

In 1983 Territo’s girlfriend, now wife, Kim, bought him a 35mm camera for Christmas. “I became obsessed with hockey. I used to sneak down to the press area without a press pass and take pictures until the usher kicked me out,” he said. Early in his photography career Territo worked with a radiologist who became his mentor. The doctor encouraged him to take his photos to the next level. Territo said, “He told me my work was good. He told me I should approach the Amerks about being their team photographer. He wrote a proposal and encouraged me to take samples of my work and go to the appointment that was set up for me. I was in my twenties with no confidence. When I showed the Amerks my photos they liked them. They hired me, and that was the day I became a professional photographer.” Territo got the job as team photographer for the Red Wings as a result of some studio photography work he did for the team in the past. One of his pictures was chosen for the cover of their program. He was approached by a team staff member and asked if he would be able to do action photos for the team. With his past experience with the Amerks, he felt he could do it. “I was immediately accepted into the Red Wings family and felt very welcome. continued on page 18

This is not a common photographic perspective of Red Wings Stadium. For this picture Territo went to the top of the Kodak Tower. He said, “You usually don’t see the stadium from this view. I was very fortunate to be given access to the roof of the Kodak building. While I was there I got to see George Eastman’s office on the top floor. That was a very exciting moment for me.”

the team actually became my second family and I consider Red Wings stadium my summer home. I just love being there,” he said. Territo’s first season with the Red Wings was 2012 and he had to decide his approach to documenting the team’s season. “The Red Wings allow a lot of freedom on how I do the job. I see the freedom as a compliment to the respect they have for my work,” Territo said. His approach is to keep his eye on all the action going on in the stadium during the game. “I cannot observe like a fan. I have to look at it as a focus on the pictures, I can’t get caught up in the game. I have to keep cool to catch the moment and have to stay focused.” One of Territo’s favorite photography techniques is known as Composition Vignetting, described as the play of light and paying attention to the details of light and dark within the image. This approach to composition contributes to the artistic quality of the photo. Through the years Territo worked as an orderly, as an XRay technician and as a surgical technician at Park Ridge Hospital, all the while pursuing photography. Currently he works as an Ophthalmic photographer specializing in diseases of the retina. Territo is also President of the Rochester Baseball Historical Society. RBHS began in 2007 and is an educational organization dedicated to the preservation, research and dissemination of the baseball history of greater Rochester. Territo’s Award Winning photography career spans over 30 years as a professional photographer. Here are some of his favorite pictures as team photographer for the Rochester Red Wings. For more on Joe Territo visit www.joeterritophotography.com

This is a picture of a walk-off home run during the 2015 season. A walk-off home run is described as a home run that ends the game. It must be a home run that gives the home team the lead (and consequently, the win) in the bottom of the final inning of the game. Thus the losing team (the visiting team) must then “walk off” the field immediately afterward. Territo said, “This is the celebration of Josmil Pinto’s walk-off home run at home plate with his team mates. It was during the first game of the season. The Red Wings had 10 walk-off home runs during the 2015 season.”

This picture of Zack Granite is an example of peak action, the ultimate in sports photography. Territo said, “I love shooting from a high angle onto the field. I always consider the background in these action pictures. I don’t want any confusion that comes with things going on in the background. I isolate the subject and feel the green with the bright red of the uniform creates a beautiful picture.”

This black and white photo taken in 2015 is one Territo thought about a lot before taking it. He said, “I had this picture in mind for a year or two before I actually shot it. I planned it in my mind. We all get inspiration from other people’s work. Here Diaz is just going to work, carrying his equipment, ready to take his place on the field.”

GreeceNewsNY.com November 2018 19

This photo is of a young fan watching the ball go over the fence. Territo said, “There is so much going on during a baseball game. The reactions of the fans also tells a story. I look into the stands for the emotions. It is all about the emotions, I like to capture that. Most every human emotion is shown during a baseball game. This picture is also about the reactions the boys in the background are showing.”

From the front cover: “This is a very special photo taken of Tommy Field during the 2016 season. It was the last game of the year and the Red Wings didn’t make the playoffs. It is a metaphor for the entire season. They had a great record that year but they just missed the mark, like the player just missing the catch in this picture,” Territo said. This photograph was nominated for the Minor League Baseball Photo of the Year. The picture received the 2nd Place award and was featured on a huge billboard in Rochester in 2017 and again 2018.

Who is Jean Brooks Greenleaf?

The Greece Historical Society wants you to know. The Greece Historical Society unveiled a Historic Marker honoring Jean Brooks Greenleaf on October 8, 2018. The Historical Society was awarded a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation to install a historic marker at the site of the summer home of nationally recognized woman’s suffrage activist Jean Brooks Greenleaf. The Greenleaf home and farm were located where Lake Shore Country Club is today, 1165 Greenleaf Road, Rochester. The golf club’s owners Chuck and Dawn Hart graciously granted permission to have the marker installed on their property. The grant was secured by Greece Historical Society volunteer Maureen Whalen. Maureen came to greatly admire Jean Brooks Greenleaf when she curated last year’s museum exhibit “Winning the Vote: The Women of Greece Involved in the Suffrage Movement.” Jean Brooks Greenleaf was a woman suffragist. She is mainly remembered for her work as a suffragist leader active in Women’s Rights organizations in the Rochester Community and speaking at local, statewide and national events about the suffrage cause. She joined the Women’s Political Club in 1885 and became its second president in 1888. She was a New York statewide suffrage leader, elected as President of the New York State Women Suffrage Association at the state convention held in Rochester in 1890. She worked tirelessly on women’s rights along with Susan B. Anthony with whom she maintained a personal friendship with during the early 1890s. In 1894 Jean Brooks Greenleaf was nominated by Democrats as the only wom-

an delegate to the state’s constitutional convention. She remained active working on women’s rights all throughout her life. Jean Brooks Greenleaf died in 1918 and is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester. A statement was read from the Willam G. Pomeroy Foundation during the dedication ceremony. It said in part, “We wish you well as you gather to commemorate the life and legacy of Jean Brooks Greenleaf with the Historic Roadside Marker you see here today. Greenleaf’s work through the New York State Woman’s Suffrage Association and other women’s rights activities were significant. The historic marker being unveiled today was made available through our New York State Women’s Suffrage Historic Marker program. Last year, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of New York signing women’s suffrage into law. New York was three years ahead of the United States, which passed the 19th Amendment in 1920. At the Foundation, we wanted to help commemorate this important heritage in New York with roadside markers that pay tribute to historical connections to women’s rights. It was part of broader statewide effort led by Humanities New York.” Since 2006, the William G. Pomeroy Foundation has funded over 540 historic markers in 51 New York counties encouraging communities to celebrate their local history. Texas Roadhouse Brings 177 New Jobs to Greece and Holds A Pre-Opening Event to Benefit Greece Education Fund Greece’s Texas Roadhouse location opened Monday, October 8 at 3065 West Ridge Road. Before the first guest walked in the door, the restaurant rolled out the red, white and blue carpet for several local organizations. As the restaurant trained new cooks, meat cutters and other kitchen members, local firefighters, police officers, and Local Food Bank staff were the first to try the restaurant’s legendary hand-cut steaks, falloff-the-bone ribs and made-from-scratch sides. Prior to opening, on Saturday, October 6, the restaurant hosted an invitation-only pre-opening event and raised over $4,000 for the Greece Education Fund. “The Greece Education Fund makes a powerful impact on our local school system,” said Managing Partner Tory Gaesser. “The fund provides resources for educational events that students or the district may not be able to afford without community assistance. It also partners with the Greece Educational Food Bank that provides meals to low-income families in the Greece School District. We’re excited to partner with this amazing charity and can’t imagine a more meaningful way to celebrate our opening.” Provided Information Photos by Karen Fien

Kelley Sperduto and Andy the Armadillo at the fundraiser information table greeted patrons at the event Saturday, October 6.
