Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Dedication of GPAL Fields The Town of Greece and the Greece Parks and Recreation Department held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 for the dedication of the Greece Police Athletic League (GPAL) Fields at Badgerow Park South, located at 1120 Latta Road in Greece. A dedication sign was hung on the fence of the first baseball field in the park. The Greece Police Athletic League is an organization that aims to bring the community and the police department together while allowing police officers in the community to build relationships with the people in the neighborhoods they police. The GPAL was founded by retired Greece Police Chief Gerald Phelan and is now run by his son, Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan, who has been with the Greece Police Department since 1989. Chief Gerald Phelan’s goal was to keep children off of the streets through encouraging them to participate in sports with officers from the department. Since its founding, the program has grown to offer many different sporting leagues, including softball, football, basketball, and boxing. The police officers within the department act as instructors and mentors for the kids, while striving to teach them a new sport or helping them to become more proficient within a sport they currently participate in. The program, which is free of charge and remains the

only completely free Police Athletic League (PAL) program within New York State, is intended to be more than simply learning about or playing a sport; it is about building good relationships with police officers in a positive environment and promoting healthy youth activities. In order to raise funds, the GPAL organizes an annual mailing campaign, where they distribute letters asking for donations from the community to keep the program running strong for another year. 4th Annual Painted Paws Art Show & Auction by Tami Raco GRASP (Greece Residents Assisting Stray Pets) is holding their 4th Annual Painted Paws Art Show and Auction on Saturday September 23, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00PM. The event is held at the Greece Canal Park - Erie Canal Lodge. This art show and auction is an annual fundraiser that enables the nonprofit organization GRASP to continue helping stray and displaced cats and dogs in the Greece community. GRASP began serving the community 21 years ago when it saw a need to save unclaimed cats and dogs from euthanasia. The seed of GRASP was planted many years ago when GRASP founder Barbara Pingree worked at the animal hospital where Greece Animal Control rents space. Many animals coming in through animal control were being routinely put down if they were not claimed by their owners. Barbara began working on her own to help find homes for the animals. The roots of GRASP began to form as a few other friends began working together in the mission to find homes for animals. In 1996 Greece Residents Assisting Stray Pets (G.R.A.S.P., Inc.) was born. Today the group has many volunteers working in different capacities. GRASP remains 100% volunteer. They place an average 250 cats and up to 150 dogs per year. GRASP is committed to reducing the number of

homeless pets in Greece by decreasing dog and cat reproduction, promoting responsible pet ownership, and placing homeless dogs and cats into compatible, loving, permanent homes. The Annual Painted Paw Art Show helps the group continue its mission. Each year kitten season hits hard, during this season the group struggles with trying to care for all the pregnant cats, feral cats and kittens. They often face the challenge of having more cats in need of help than volunteers available to help. It also drains their resources. Proceeds from the Annual Painted Paw Art Show helps the group replenish their pet food pantry and supplies. Tickets to the Painted Paws Art Show are $20. In addition to the art show there will be live music, h’orderves, desserts, a silent auction, Chinese auction, raffles and games. The art featured at Painted Paws is created by paw prints of GRASP cats and dogs, and then finished by

an artist creating unique art pieces. If you are interested in learning more about the Painted Paws event, becoming a volunteer or contributing visit the GRASP website at http://www.graspinc.org/.

LOVE Week in Greece by Tami Raco

Lakeshore Community Church launched their 1st Annual Love Week. Love Week is dedicated to putting faith into action. The week began on July 16 when the church community set out to show love to the Greece community by performing acts of kindness through various projects. “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” Pastor Brian Pawlowski said. The idea of Love Week began when Pastor Brian and his wife Stephanie moved to Greece from New Jersey to be part of the Mission Ministry at LCC. The Love Week concept grew from this dream and became part of Lakeshore’s monthly serve initiative. Stephanie and Brian’s vision is to show the Greece community God’s love. “Our hope was to be His hands and feet and be there for the community,” Stephanie said. Mike Grugnale was instrumental in helping coordinate all the various projects in the community and acted as the liaison between the various projects and church members. They collectively sent a force from the church to simply go love on the community and expect nothing in return. “This was our way to say thank you to those that are always there to serve us,” Stephanie said.

LOVE Week in Greece continued from page 12

In one short week Lakeshore Community Church showered the community with 220 volunteers at 16 site locations with over 15,000 volunteer hours. Volunteers prepared and served meals to the Greece Police Department, Greece Ambulance, North Greece Fire Department and Lakeshore Fire Department. They also helped with grounds clean up at various community sites such as Basil Park, Sawyer Park, Unity Hospital and Villa of Hope, served at local nursing homes and provided a free community carwash. They also helped out at a day long tournament at Greece Little League field by helping with concessions, parking, and score keeping. They hosted a kids activity center, did clean up work and provided hot dogs to every coach and player during the day long tournament. All food and supplies for Love Week were paid for through the Making Waves mission budget and donations from the church volunteers.

Love Week was graciously received by many in the community. The church hopes to make this part of their annual serve initiative for years to come. Stephanie concluded, “Love week was simply a dedicated time for us to go out into our community and share God’s love with them, to tell our neighbors that God loves you and so do we.” Provided Photos

I Dig This Town

Shayna Weeks, Nathan Harmon & Rorilee Reneck

By Karen Fien

“I Dig This Town” was held on August 5 at the Greece Town Hall Campus. An assortment of vehicles provided by the DPW, Greece Fire Department, Greece Police, Greece Volunteer Ambulance, Greece Central School District - Bus and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department were on full display. Adults and children had the opportunity to climb on and see up close the vehicles that are working in their communities. Peter O’Brien, Director of Greece Parks and Recreation, organized the event with help from Town Supervisor Bill Reilich. Both organizers agreed that the event has evolved since it began as a “Climb Aboard” into the overwhelming success it is today. O’Brien said, “This is the only event in the county that showcases everything that Greece has to offer, and it is free to the public. No other town does it this way.” The Town of Greece plans to incorporate more community events that encourages neighbors get to know their neighbors, and to have a great afternoon with fun activities for the entire family. “I Dig This Town” was created for that purpose. Jonny Buckert, from Rochester, was taking his daughters to the Greece Library with no idea the event was going on. Jonny said, “This is fantastic. What a pleasant surprise.” Lucas Schlueter and Kira Spinelli both said, “The bounce house is our favorite thing to do.” Jalen Rumph loved the Sheriff’s Armored Personnel Carrier, and Emma Carlson said, “I think it is a great place to have fun.”

Lakeview Garden Club Founded in 1960 by Jean Bachman, the Lakeview Garden Club was formed when Bachman invited 16 of her women friends who shared her enthusiasm for gardening to form a club. Currently the club has 28 members, two of them from the original group formed in 1960. Over the past 57 years the club, through its affiliation with the Federated Garden Clubs of NYS - 7th District, has been involved in many initiatives in the community and in the world. These projects include Water For South Sudan, Rochester Civic Garden Center, Blue Star Memorial at Ontario Beach Park, Greece Historical Society Garden, and The Annual District Candlelight House Tour. Since 1988 The Lakeview Garden Club has maintained one of the many gardens at the Greece Historical Society located at 595 Long Pond Road, Greece. Responsible for the northeast quadrant of the Historical Society property, in 2015 the Club submitted a proposal to the 7th District Federated Garden Clubs of NYS for a Civic Beautification Grant in the amount of $525 to help finance the revitalization of the Historical Society Garden. Divided into three stages of work, Lakeview Club members and Greece Boy Scout Troop #18, led by scout leaders Kim and Norm Gunkel, completed the project this past Spring. The Lakeview garden at the Greece Historical Society is mostly perennial and it serves as a “Memory Garden” for those Lakeview members who have passed. The garden in-

cludes a Japanese Maple, azaleas, astilbes, ferns, hostas, Macrophylla Hydrangeas, Miss Kim Lilac, Fuchsia Meidland Roses, May Night Salvia, Autumn Joy Sedum and Weigela. Two purple Evision Clematises climb a white arbor and bloomed prolifically this spring. An old time fragrant Zephirine Drouhin Climbing Rose graces a trellis donated by a 50 year member. The paving stones for the path through the arbor were an economical “find” at the Town of Greece Transfer Station on Flynn Road. There is a concrete bench and a cast iron chair providing a place for one to sit, reflect, and enjoy the garden. To maintain the garden Lakeview Garden Club members sign up for weekly weeding, watering and general maintenance of the garden. 2017 Candlelight Tour On November 11, 2017, Lakeview Garden Club along with Shorewood Garden Club and Woodside Garden Club will host the 7th District’s 35th Annual Candlelight Tour. This year the tour “Maplewood Gems and Beyond” will be held predominantly in the historic Maplewood District and includes three B&B’s and two private residences all built before 1930. Club members from the three clubs plus members from the 7th District will decorate the chosen homes in a holiday theme using natural plant material. The public is invited to tour the homes and B&B’s from 11AM to 4PM on November 11, 2017. The cost of a ticket is $20.00 and will be available from various florists and green houses in the surrounding area this fall. continued on page 24

Library Paludarium Display Unveiled On Tuesday, July 11, 2017 The Greece Town Board and the Greece Library Board unveiled the new paludarium display in the Greece Public Library, located at 2 Vince Tofany Boulevard in Greece. A paludarium is a part aquarium, part terrarium ecosystem composed of such plants as Malaysian driftwood, moss, and orchids. This biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment are becoming popular as a tool to teach biology and earth science. Being the first of its kind in the area, the Greece Public Library’s paludarium features technology that allows it to simulate weather events, including lightning storms, fog and rain. It holds about 350 gallons of water and features a waterfall on each side. The paludarium contains several fascinating specimens, one of the most interesting being the freshwater fish from Lake Malawi in Africa. A unique feature of these fish is that they are mouth brooding, which means that the mother fish protects her young by keeping them in her mouth. The paludarium is an ideal habitat for mouth brooding fish, as the terrarium elements provide hiding spaces for the mother fish. The library’s new paludarium was previously an aquarium. Most of the fish that were in the aquarium now live in the paludarium, along with some new friends. A few of the larger fish that were in the aquarium – including the fish that visitors to the Greece Public Library affectionally named “Nemo” – have retired to bigger homes at ABC Aquarium.
