Coyote Awareness Information Small Pet Advisory Coyotes are prevalent throughout New York State and it is not uncommon to sight them in the Town of Greece. After receiving calls from concerned residents, Supervisor Reilich wanted to make the public aware of what the Town of Greece Department of Animal Control is doing in response. Coyotes are highly intelligent animals that adapt well to changing habitats and conditions in both suburban and urban areas. This makes their capture quite challenging. When responding to calls regarding coyotes, Greece Animal Control’s first priority is determining whether the animal is an immediate threat to people or pets. Secondly, they determine if the animal is sick or injured to the point where it could possibly be captured and appropriately dealt with. Most calls received are of the nuisance variety where the animal is causing concern simply by its presence. The following list will help educate on the behavior of coyotes and what you can do to avoid frequent encounters: - Be very careful with pets - in particular cats and small breed dogs. Keep your pets under close supervision and good control. Pets that roam are targets for coyotes. Larger dogs are generally safe, however they may want to chase the coyote which could result in injury. continued on page 5

Coyote Awareness Information continued from page 4
- Make certain there are no food sources available to encourage coyotes to frequent certain areas: pet food outside, bird feeders, and garbage cans all encourage coyotes to keep coming back to the same area, and they WILL remember. - Do not allow the coyotes to be comfortable in the neighborhoods. Harass them when they are seen. Yell, clap hands, stomp feet, make lots of noise to frighten them and chase them off. Do not let them lose their fear of humans. Wild animals are generally afraid of people and will avoid humans. - Call 911 if you require immediate assistance with an aggressive coyotes (or any aggressive animal). “Some residents have expressed concerns regarding coyote sightings, so I wanted to provide the public with some educational information on what practices will help in avoiding frequent encounters with the animals. Our Town of Greece Department of Animal Control is fully aware of the sightings and provides educational information to residents that address their concerns. Specifically regarding

Love Week Community Outreach Program by Tami Raco
Perhaps you saw a sea of bright green t-shirts and people busily serving in various Greece and surrounding community locations during the first week of August. If you did, that was the Lakeshore Community Church’s Second Annual Love Week Outreach. In 2017 Lakeshore Community Church began asking the question, “If Lakeshore closed its doors, would anyone in the community notice?” This question motivated a small group of people from the church to begin something called Love Week where volunteers show love in outreach efforts to the Greece community. It was so well received they sent Lakeshore love bugs back out into the community again this year with 269 volunteers who put in over 1000 hours of community outreach loving in 21 different local projects, all in just one week. Volunteers from Lakeshore showered area first responders with love and gratitude by providing meals to the Greece Police Department, Greece Volunteer Ambulance and Lakeshore Fire Department. They brought smiles to se-
niors at Crimson Ridge Assisted Living, Park Ridge Nursing, Brookdale and Park Ridge Adult Day Services when the volunteers provided social and craft time with the residents. Lakeshore had volunteer teams love on area parks with sweat labor as they cleaned, weeded and beautified many Greece Parks such as Braddock Bay Park, Cranberry Trail, Grandview Park and the Greece Little League Park. They also helped support local facility outreach centers such as Mission Share, Rochester Family Mission, Victoria’s House, Journey Home, Greece Ecumenical Clothing and Beatrice Place. Love Week also hit the city streets when volunteers collected food for Flower City Pickers from the Public Market. Over 20 Lakeshore volunteers assisted Father’s Heart ministry serving a hot meal, and giving groceries and clothing to those in need in the inner city. The week was full of work and fun while loving on the community but it also helps “build the soul” according to Lakeshore’s Senior Pastor Vince DiPaola.
Grand Opening at Orchard View Senior Apartments On July 19, 2018, leaders and members from the Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce, Monroe County, and the Town of Greece joined the management team and residents of Orchard View Senior Apartments for their grand opening and ribbon-cutting celebration. “It’s truly a pleasure to welcome this beautiful new housing facility to our community,” said Greece Regional Chamber President/CEO Sarah Lentini. From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich
I hope you are enjoying all of the fun activities the Town of Greece has to offer this summer. I am happy to announce that we recently launched a Facebook Page to assist residents with lost and found pets. The name of the Facebook Page is “Town of Greece Lost and Found Pets” and serves as a community board for residents to post pictures and descriptions of lost and found pets in the Greece area. Relevant information and Town-sponsored events regarding animal-related matters in the Town of Greece will be posted to the page along with contact information for the Town of Greece Animal Control Department. I have been a pet owner my whole life and understand the desire for the availability of immediate resources when it comes to lost pets. It is my hope that this Facebook page will serve community members as an
organized way to share information about lost and found pets. In addition to creating the Facebook Page, I invited a representative from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to the Town of Greece to present on the topic of coyotes. Many residents attended this educational meeting to learn about the coyote population in New York State and have questions answered. If you’ve travelled down West Ridge Road in Greece, I’m sure you’ve noticed the Clubhouse Fun Center that recently opened at 3340 West Ridge Road. The Clubhouse Fun Center, owned by Greece natives Steven and Marsina Olschewski, boasts fun family-friendly activities such as mini golf and arcade games. If you have old documents or papers you want to shred, I would like to invite you to our second shredding event of the year. This free event will be held Monday, September 17, 2018 from 1pm – 5pm at the Greece Town Hall Campus. Services will be provided by Shred-Text. I hope that you will take advantage of all of our upcoming programs. If I can be of assistance to you in any other Town-related matter, please do not hesitate to contact our office or visit our website.
Rotary Little Free Libraries Project
The Greece Rotary Club extends an invitation to Greece residents and businesses to join them in promoting reading in our community. While supplies last, Greece Rotary will provide a pre-made book house to persons interested in becoming a Little Free Library steward. Book houses are handcrafted structures filled with donated books to share with neighbors of all ages. The libraries are typically placed in easily accessible locations, front yards, parks or gardens. Users are encouraged to take a book and replace a book. The Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that aims to inspire a love of reading, build community and spark creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world. More than a dozen Little Free Library book houses will be distributed throughout the town. The steward is responsible for painting, installing and maintaining the library for a minimum of three years. All libraries will be registered with the Little Free Library worldwide organization at the Rotary club’s expense.
For more information about becoming a registered library steward, please visit www.littlefreelibrary.org. The application for Greece stewardship can be found at www. greecerotary.org and submissions are appreciated by September 30, 2018. Completed applications can be mailed to Greece Rotary Club, P.O Box 16106, Rochester, New York 14616 or e-mailed to greecerotarylfl@gmail.com. Chosen recipients will be notified. Key Hormones That Affect Women’s Aging and What to Eat to Help Balance Them by Tami Mungenast CPT CNWC For women aging can be a slippery slope especially with the changing state of our hormones. Hormone fluctuations can alter mood, energy, and weight. It can be a challenge to understand the best way to eat, implement proper rest and even exercise, let alone deal with the roller coaster of aging and hormones. Below you will read about five key hormones that can be affected by aging and directly impact energy, weight, and mood and some foods that can help. Estrogen: Aka the beauty hormone. Estrogen makes women women. Estrogen helps provide smooth shiny hair and soft skin. Estrogen helps women feel feminine and vibrant. Too much estrogen however, can make a woman estrogen dominant and can cause migraines, tender breasts, and sometimes, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and fibroids. Too little estrogen causes hair to fall out, bones become weak, and reduced skin elasticity. Maintaining estrogen levels in balance is an important anti-aging strategy. Eating foods high in healthy fats, including nut butters, avocados, or ghee, can help keep estrogen levels balanced but not too high. Eating cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and brussel sprouts can help remove excess estrogen that may be present. Progesterone: Aka the brain hormone. Progesterone, when in balance, keeps our cognitive function sharp and helps with sound sleep. Often as women age, they suffer from disrupted sleep or trouble focusing without realizing that it can be caused from unbalanced progesterone. If you feel this way try tracking your energy levels and moods in the last week of your cycle. If you feel extra tired and moody as you approach that week you might be low in progesterone. To naturally try to balance your progesterone eat pumpkin seeds, black beans, and other foods that are rich in magnesium. These types of foods can help boost progesterone levels. Insulin: Aka the fat hormone. Maintaining balanced insulin levels prevents unwanted weight gain and belly fat that is commonly associated with aging. Metabolism slows as we age and insulin gets more stubborn. It is important to eat less processed
carbohydrates especially sugar to help balance insulin. Avoid high sugar foods, refined carbs, and excessive salt all play to help manage your insulin levels and prevent weight gain. Cortisol: Aka the stress hormone. Cortisol accelerates aging faster than any other hormone. A healthy small cortisol spike can help get us in gear but large cortisol swings are typically the result of chronic stress. The stress causes the cortisol to increase and in turn can create inflammation in the body. Inflammation then becomes the trigger for so many different diseases to include diabetes, cancer and autoimmune diseases. Food can help manage cortisol levels by remembering to eat every three to four hours and include healthy protein and fats in all of your meals. Avoid excess caffeine and sugar consumption to avoid taxing the adrenals too much. Also, add in two to three daily servings of leafy greens, rich in B vitamins and iron, to keep your energy balanced. Thyroid: Aka the metabolism hormone. Thyroid controls your metabolic rate, hair, skin, and mood. Shifts in this hormone can cause fatigue. Women in post child bearing years should monitor their thyroid levels by having them checked at their annual physical. To boost your thyroid consume a few Brazil nuts (high in selenium) and add some iron-rich red meat one to two times per week to help perk up a sluggish thyroid. A well balanced diet with whole low sugar foods and regular exercise can be beneficial to hormone health. If you feel you are experiencing health issues related to hormonal imbalance it is recommended to see your primary care physician or a holistic doctor who is experienced in bio-identical hormones.

Protecting Our Great Lakes Greece woman forms the Plastic Lakes Project by Barbara Burke
Tammy Bleier, a Greece Arcadia High School graduate loves the water, she has ever since she was a baby. Growing up in Greece, New York she had constant exposure to Lake Ontario, Ontario Beach Park and Keuka Lake, where she vacationed with her family every summer. Bleier says, “I grew up a short five minute drive from Ontario Beach Park. When I got my first car I would drive to the beach and along Edgemere Drive, it was my happy place. I walked the beaches all the time. The lake was my place for recreation and relaxation. I don’t remember seeing much pollution then, now we are in the midst of a crisis.” Bleier formed the Plastic Lakes Project in Spring 2018 with the goal to research and combat plastics in the Great Lakes. It is an offshoot of Plastic Ocean Project (POP), an organization that Bleier got involved with while studying at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She graduated from UNCW with a B.S. in Marine Biology in 2014. While volunteering with POP and working on the plastics problem in the oceans, Bleier discovered that three million pounds of plastics were entering Lake Ontario every year. That is when she decided to get involved in the plastic problem that was happening right in her hometown. The goal of Plastic Lakes Project is to research, educate and combat plastic pollution in the Great Lakes. Bleier started going to events at the Alliance for the Great Lakes, an organization founded in the 70s with a goal of “protecting the Great Lakes for today and tomorrow.” “I wanted to find out what is going on with the plastics problem right here in our community. I found that a lot of the plastics in the lake get washed up onto the shore. The debris is spread out and it is hard to track. The plastic in the lake breaks down into micro plastics and they can’t be seen, unlike in the oceans where large areas of plastic are seen floating on the surface. The micro plastics in the lake sink to the floor of the lake where fish and wildlife feed. The plastic problem in our Great Lakes is insidious, you can’t see the problem. In the oceans, photos are available that
show the large areas of plastic debris,” Bleier said. Why is Plastic Lakes Project so important? According to their website, “Three million pounds of plastic ends up in Lake Ontario each year. That’s enough plastic waste to fill 28 Olympic-sized swimming pools. While studies are emerging on plastic pollution in the Great Lakes, very few include research on Lake Ontario. Plastic Lakes Project is therefore focusing here first, as Lake Ontario is very unique. The other four Great Lakes eventually flow into Lake Ontario, making it the most vulnerable to plastic pollution. The highest count was outside of Toronto, with 3.4 million pieces found in one square mile. What’s more is that Lake Ontario is the last Great Lake before the St. Lawrence River, which empties into the ocean at the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Everything is connected. A majority of plastic waste comes from densely populated cities, like Chicago, Toronto, Cleveland and Detroit, as well as runoff from agricultural fields, recreation, and shipping. Unlike marine plastics that tend to move towards large, central, ocean gyres at the surface, lake plastics are often taken to shore by wind and currents. Of the litter that washes ashore, roughly 80% is plastic debris. Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose, meaning it will remain in the ecosystem far beyond our lifetimes.” Since forming Plastic Lakes Project Bleier has held monthly beach cleanups. The objective of the cleanups is to not only pick up plastics along the beach which will eventually go back into the lake, but to also educate on the problem of single use plastics and to bring awareness to the alternatives. Bleier’s first cleanup was held in May and she did it on her own. In June she was joined by family and friends and through the use of social media the July and August cleanups were attended by 20 to 25 individuals at each event. During the cleanup items are collected, logged and carefully counted. Bleier uses the data in her research work. To date, in the June, July and August cleanups 10,000 total items have been collected and 483 pounds of trash has been diverted from littering Lake Ontario. The top items collected have been right in line in all three cleanups; cigarette butts, plastic pieces and food wrappers. In total 79% continued on page 21

of what was collected was plastic or had plastic components. “Every little bit helps, and every individual can make a difference, my heart is so full and I am so thankful for the response from the community and all of the caring individuals who come out to support this project. The reception has been overwhelming. It really gives you hope,” Bleier said. Bleier is currently working on her Masters Degree at The College at Brockport studying Environmental Science and Ecology. She is also working to have cigarette receptacles placed in public areas as a part of the Keep America Beautiful Project, a non-profit organization that educates about ending littering, improving recycling and beautifying communities. Cigarette butts are the number one item picked up during beach cleanups. Another of Bleier’s current projects is working on a program to present to students K-12 on awareness of plastics and ways to reduce single use plastics and to introduce sustainable, long-term alternatives for use in daily living. She also wants to convey the fact that recycling is important, but it is not enough. Bleier will share the awareness of the role the Great Lakes play in our lives and our region’s ecol-
ogy, not only for recreational uses but also for our drinking water and food and the importance of keeping the lakes clean for all generations of wildlife and the millions of people that depend on our lakes. Upcoming Fall Plastic Lakes Project cleanups are scheduled for September 8 at Turning Point Park, 260 Boxart Street in Rochester and on October 6 at Ontario Beach Park, 50 Beach Avenue, Rochester. Cleanups start at 10 AM and wrap up at 12 noon with a debris weigh in and group photo. There is a role for everyone that wants to participate. Volunteers are broken up into groups of 3-4 people and each member is assigned a job. Jobs include logging information on data sheets, carrying the bag and picking up debris. After each cleanup Bleier goes through the individual bags of garbage to log the data, 60% of the debris picked up can be recycled, the other 40% is disposed of properly.
