Anything for love WE would walk 500 miles and we would walk 500 more... for love. According to the latest survey, we’re one very generous nation.
Engaged Brits should expect a bumper guest list, as new research has revealed wedding guests are more than happy to go the extra mile for loved ones’ nuptials, both in distance and financially. A survey of 2,000 UK adults carried out by One4all, the Post Office gift card, revealed guests would be willing to travel an astonishing 1,163 miles – more than the distance from London to Barcelona or Manchester to Nice – to be at a loved one’s wedding.
JET OFF ABROAD The data also revealed newlyweds-to-be debating saying ‘I do’ overseas shouldn’t be put off my what guests will think, as just 16 per cent consider weddings being held abroad selfish. A third (31 per cent) even welcome the idea of travelling to a wedding abroad. And what’s not to love – it’s a family gettogether and mini break all in one. Including travel, accommodation, gifts for the newlyweds, an outfit, beauty treatments beforehand and drinks at the reception, Brits are willing to spend
£827.45 on average when attending a loved one’s wedding – that’s almost half of the average monthly take home pay in the UK. When quizzed on the costs, 28 per cent of respondents said they do not mind splashing the cash as it’s a special occasion.
CHANCE TO CELEBRATE
Aoife Davey, group marketing manager at One4all Gift Cards said: “It’s really heartwarming to see just how much British adults are willing to spend and how far they are willing to travel to be a part of their loved one’s big day – 1,163 miles is a really long way and for many, £827 is a lot to spend on somebody else’s wedding. “I think it’s common for those planning their wedding to choose a location that will appease family and friends, but in fact, our data shows that Britons would happily travel long distances to see the couple tie the knot. “It also appears that wedding guests in the UK are more than happy to splash out on accommodation, outfits, beauty treatments and gifts for the newlyweds, as they value a wedding as a special occasion – this will be welcome news for couples planning their big day who are
concerned about keeping costs down for guests.” The full breakdown of what Brits were prepared to spend when attending a wedding included travel costs priced at

YOUR BOLDEST SEASON YET
Getting the wedding design underway is often the hardest part, but having a few firm ideas will help the rest of your wedding come together seamlessly... FROM the colour scheme to the flower arrangements, there’s a lot to organise when it comes to the decoration for your big day. Start by gathering together a few ideas that you know you want, such as the overall theme (if you’re having one) or the general colour scheme, then the rest of your plans should flow with relative ease.
COLOUR IT YOUR WAY
Most things will start to come together once you have decided on your final colour scheme. Autumn is a great time to use warmer tones in order to match the outside landscape, which can make for a cosy and romantic wedding. Think about burnt oranges and creams to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. And top it all off with scented candles, bunches
of fruit and cinnamon sticks, all rested on the obligatory tree slice. For later in the season as it tends to get colder, tones start to get bolder. Many couples opt for dramatic red, dark blue or purple to contrast with the stark winter white – all to match with the weather outside. If you don’t fancy something so bold, icy blues and lavender offer a softer touch and will also complement the weather.
IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS...
Weddings thrown in autumn and winter are often the most magical – and that’s all down to those special finishing touches that complement the cosier theme, and add personality to your day. The latter months of the year are a great time to bring some of the outside inside – for example, pine cones and fern leaves look create as groomsmen buttonholes and can match with your place settings or bridal bouquets. If you’re struggling to find an impressive and memorable centre piece, but don’t want to spend a fortune on flowers, why not make the most of autumn by using a pumpkin as a candle holder.
DON’T NEGLECT COMFORT
As we head into the colder winter months, your venue becomes all the more important. It’s no longer wise to have an outdoor affair, with
nothing to protect your guests against the elements. Instead, you’ll likely need to opt for an indoor setting, with plenty of luxurious furnishings to keep everyone toasty. You can also help keep your guests warm throughout the evening by offering warm, seasonal food and drinks. Consider mulled wine or cider as a pre- or post-dinner drink, which is both warming and delicious – it’ll be sure to go down a treat. Towards the end of the night it has become common practise for couples to supply a basket of flip flops for their guests, in order to sooth tired feet. In addition to these, an autumn or winter wedding could supply a basket of blankets to warm your guests as they make their way home.
FIND SOME GORGEOUS WINTER BLOOMS
Most people don’t associate the autumn and winter months with fresh blooms, however it’s actually the time of year when some of the most beautiful flowers come into season. The most commonly known are holly and ivy, which together make a gorgeous traditional wintery bouquet. However, if you’re after something with a quirkier edge, then opt for snowdrops and add a hint of blue by throwing in some juniper. Skimmia, which boasts a bright red bud against a dark green leaf, is also in excess around the colder months and will add a pop of colour to any arrangement, while
also offering something unique to the winter bouquet. You could also add white roses to a modest bouquet made from green foliage, such as caladium or Stachys Byzantina (Lamb’s Ear).
GO ALL-OUT
If you want to really up your flower game, transform your ceremony with a painted-white tree-lined aisle. In addition to adding a fairytale ambiance to the occasion, the trees are also a nifty way of bringing the outdoors in. Also wanted an al fresco ceremony but got stuck with bad weather? These kinds of decorations might be your next best thing.

SOMETHING OLD OR SOMETHING NEW? It’s time to stray from tradition when it comes to your wedding. Make your day unique by going all-out with one of these eccentric themes... LET YOUR WEDDING FALL DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE
THERE are no rules to abide by when it comes to planning your dream wedding. So why stick to the traditional? If you’re adventurous enough it’s a chance to really get involved and have great fun organising the events, positioning the props, and of course, on the day itself.
Just because it’s your wedding day, you don’t have to hire a wedding planner. Head to an expert party planner instead and make it a really memorable affair. After all, isn’t it all just a big celebration of you two as a couple?
INDULGE IN A CLASSIC MEDIEVAL BANQUET
How about travelling back in time and hosting a full-scale medieval banquet for your wedding guests? Treat them to long elaborate table plans in a great hall, with red velvet curtains as room partitions and dining on silver plates and cutlery.
Additional touches could include banners hanging from the ceilings and suits of armor guarding every entrance. When it comes to the venue, have a look at local castles, which will able to give you the right atmosphere as well as the spacious hall you’ll need for the tables. Flowers are also a huge consideration when you’re hosting a banquet. With such a big space it’s important to pack in as many flowers as you can so it doesn’t feel too echoey. Oranges and reds tend to work well in these spaces, adding warmth to the area, while also giving the room a softer feel. These are also perfect colours for an autumnal wedding – matching the interior decor to nature. Then there’s the food. With this theme you’ll truly be able to put on a feast for all your guests. A huge buffet, full of hearty food, means your guests definitely won’t be leaving with empty stomachs. This option is also relatively easy to organise, as it can be buffet-style where everyone can take as much, or as little, as they like.
“Fairy-tales and children’s stories have always been a great source of inspiration for highly-styled weddings, and this autumn is no exception to that,” explains Liz Taylor at the Taylor Lynn Corporation – who was responsible for creating this Alice in Wonderland-themed affair. “The latest movies – think Spiderman or Wonder Woman this year – or a favourite childhood story, such as Beatrix Potter, Beauty and the Beast, is a place that couples often look to when choosing their wedding style, and Alice in Wonderland is eternally one of the most popular. “We designed two entirely different interpretations of the story – one a more light, whimsical design and the other a darker production - more in keeping with the Johnny Depp films
than the books. “The first wedding brought a bright, quirky, vintage feel to the wedding. Simple pink checked linens were lined with eclectic painted
and glass candlesticks with mismatched shades, flowers in vintage tea pots and cups, over-sized painted lamps with highly patterned shades, toadstools, summer song birds and the Mad Hatter of course… bringing together a real fairytale wedding. “For our second Alice wedding, a dramatic lighting production provided a backdrop against which we created ‘toppling’ towers of chairs and books, spiders inhabiting delicate tea cups, catering stations dressed as quirky props, deep red roses and black trees giving height and colour. Giant toadstools, the colourfully styled Queen of Hearts, the ‘waiter’ playing cards and wedding decor packed with tiny, quirky details, gave a much more sinister feel to this wedding party which the couple loved.”
MAKE IT ALL ABOUT YOU
“Whatever the style for the wedding, I always feel it needs to reflect the couple’s tastes and personality,” added Liz. “Inspiration from music, stories and the movies is fine as just that – inspiration. It’s a base and you don’t have to include everything from the story in your wedding. “Choose the main elements that you remember, and work with those. The key is how the fantasy is then turned into reality – which is where I come in! “Taking an idea and creating a wedding production around it – with every small detail thought through – is the job of any wedding planner, and understanding where to invest a couple’s budget to create the most memorable elements to their theme is a vital ingredient in the success of the wedding.” For more information or inspiration about a themed wedding, get in touch with Taylor Lynn Corporation by heading to www.tlc-ltd.co.uk/weddings Photos curtesy of Liz Taylor of TLC.

Stay true to your
bridal budget Don't let those mounting bills stress you out – follow these tips and make clever cutbacks to ease any wedding woes THE average cost of tying the knot is now £8,000, according to a survey of married UK couples from Nationwide Building Society – with 11 per cent splashing out more than £20,000. With big costs to cover, some couples could be tempted into debt. Website MoneySuperMarket recently said it has seen a jump in people applying for wedding loans.
WHAT'S THE FIRST TO GO?
Couples looking to cut the cost of their wedding may want to consider how those who are already married successfully trimmed their budgets. A Nationwide survey found that the wedding dress was the most likely item to be 'downgraded' to save money, followed by the number of guests, the invitations, the venue and the food. Many high street stores now sell wedding dresses, or brides on a budget could go for a more vintage look by trawling second-hand and charity shops, or auction websites for a bargain. When it came to the aspects of the wedding most likely to be ditched altogether, canapes came out on top, followed by favours, cars, suit hire and a paid-for bar. Perhaps for some people, having homemade canapes rather than ditching them altogether, and swapping champagne for cheaper forms of bubbly, could be a compromise to cut costs.
WHAT IF YOU CAN'T AVOID GOING INTO DEBT?

“
If you can't see any way of avoiding getting into debt, at the very least it's important to compare loans to get the best deal. Kevin Pratt, a consumer affairs expert at MoneySuperMarket, said: "As with any borrowing, it's also wise to set a
own budgets, nearly two-thirds of brides and grooms actively consider how to reduce costs for guests attending their weddings, according to research from American Express. It found the top three ways brides and grooms try to reduce costs are: choosing a venue within a close distance to family and friends to reduce travel costs, selecting a stag or hen do that won't be too pricey, and asking guests not to buy them wedding gifts.
HOW THE COSTS FOR GUESTS CAN BE EASED FURTHER Here are some tips from American Express for couples planning a costconscious wedding for their guests: - Alert international guests early. Once you know the date, ensure any guests flying in to attend the wedding know as
early as possible, so they can secure the best travel deals. - Negotiate room deals. Many accommodation providers will offer a discount on rooms if you make a block booking for your guests. - Consider the venue carefully. If you don't want your guests to break the bank, look at the price of drinks your venue is providing to ensure there are some budget-friendly options. - Make gift lists affordable. If you are sending out a gift list, ensure there are items that fit all budgets, so guests don't feel concerned about not spending enough on you. - Points can make presents. Check how many rewards points you have on your cards. There may be enough to buy wedding favours for guests with them, so they have a small gift.

Time to Suit up Slaters’ brand new wedding party selection tool wants to make your big day as easy as possible DRESSING the bridal party has got to be one of the hardest parts of planning a wedding. Whether it’s finding a gown that’s approved by all bridesmaids or picking a suit that’s perfect for each of the groomsmen, it usually ends up being one big lesson in compromise.
If anyone understands these struggles and stresses that come from organising a wedding, it’s Slaters, the UK’s largest menswear retailer. To give you a helping hand ahead of the big day, the retailer has launched its ‘wedding party selector’, which offers a unique approach to getting everyone suited and booted. Slaters has developed new technology that makes it an easy and stress-free process of shopping online, which is similar to the brand’s traditional in-store service. The new approach will allow the groom to enter his suit size and the measurements of the rest of his wedding
party online, select the preferred colour (if known) or leave this section blank to optimise the full suit collection – and then Slaters will take care of the rest. Based on the requirements, the selector will customise the results, producing a collection of suits specifically for your wedding party. When you’ve narrowed down your selection, simply save, share then buy. Paul Slater, managing director, said: “This exciting new development enhances our excellent customer service online. Wedding parties are a growing trend in our stores and this new feature will extend our online offering and cater specifically to brides and grooms planning their wedding day. “We continue to offer three-piece suits from £89 with free alterations, catering for wedding parties of any size. Whatever the occasion, we’re with you every step of the way.” For more information visit slaters. co.uk/wedding-suits-selector

Make an entrance IF THERE’S one day that you want to make a memorable entrance on, it’s your wedding day. From vintage rides to quirky get-ups, we’ve rounded up a range of ways to arrive at your venue of choice.
HORSE AND CARRIAGE
Step back in time by arriving as the old romantics would have: by horse and cart. This transport isn’t used often these days so it’ll be sure to get your guests talking when they see you approach.
VINTAGE
This is one for the car enthusiasts among us. Since the vintage revival a few years ago, arriving in a vintage car has become increasingly popular. You can choose from a traditional model to a sports car – the rare vehicles are readily available to hire for the big day.
MOTORBIKE
Perhaps the more quirky and adventurous couple could consider arriving on a motorbike. You’ll certainly have an entrance to remember – and everyone’s attention – as you roar down the road.
CAMPERVAN
If you’re more of an outdoors-y couple, then you might want to think about hiring a VW camper for the day. You can kit it out with wedding decor and even take a few bridesmaids along with you
for the ride. And, once the ceremony is over, it would be an ideal ride to carry you off into the sunset – or onto your honeymoon. Classic and cute.
RED LONDON BUS
Who isn’t a fan of the big London bus? Use its iconic look to add a truly British touch to your day, which is especially fitting for a themed wedding day. They are available to hire for the day and you can personalise the bus to you. This vehicle has the added perk of being able to fit a large bridal party inside and so could be a lifesaver for bigger families.
AN INSPIRED APPROACH
Still stuck? Remember to take inspiration from your venue, so if you’ve opted for a venue that’s a out of the ordinary why not style your entrance to match? If you’ve chosen a farm or an outdoor boho theme, perhaps an agricultural vehicle would suit. Or, if you’re ceremony is taking place in an aircraft hanger, fly!
REMEMBER WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO YOU AS A COUPLE
Finally, if none of these take your fancy, think about what would reflect you as a couple. Have you got a favourite car in the family? Does one of you work in a profession that could be used in the wedding? Incorporate that and the big day will feel all the more unique.

your little helpers ADD a touch of cuteness to your wedding by filling the roles of flower girl and page boys with some smaller members of your family or friends.
Everyone loves to get involved in a wedding, from the mother of the bride to that late distant cousin, but make sure you don’t forget about the little ones – they’d like to walk you down the aisle too.
FLOWER GIRL
The traditional role of the flower girl is to either proceed or follow the bride down the aisle, scattering petals or confetti as she goes. Usually between the ages of three and eight, she follows the ring bearer (if you have one) and holds either a small basket with goodies, such as sweets, confetti or a bouquet of flowers – or she could even blow bubbles. She helps to create a romantic atmosphere at the ceremony. Make sure you give your flower girl an important job and that they know what this is. It’ll give them more focus and make them feel included in the day.
If they’re at a very young age, consider an escort – be that a bridesmaid, groomsman or a fellow flower girl/page boy – for them to walk down the aisle with to ensure there are no hiccups. This will also give them an added boost of confidence if they’re feeling jittery on the big day.
PAGE BOY
The page boy has a slightly different role to the flower girl. They are sometimes entrusted as ring bearers and walk ahead of the groomsmen at the ceremony. They can also be paired with the flower girls to walk down the aisle to scatter petals if that seems more age appropriate. Holding the rings can be quite a big responsibility for a young child, so make sure they’re happy and confident to perform this duty beforehand. If you’re not sure, you could swap the real rings for plastic replicas, which would give the same effect but you will be able to rest assured that your rings are safe in the pocket of the best man.

PLAYING DRESS-UP
After the wedding, consider giving the page boy and flower girl a small token or gift to show your appreciation of their efforts and their contribution to making sure your day was a brilliant success. ROSE AND BUTTERFLY HEADBAND This head garland by Rockahula is the perfect accessory. £12, johnlewis.com

- Next up, use the hydrating styling cream from the middle of your hair to the ends and blow dry using the ceramic 45mm round brush to create good body, with a soft bend to the ends. - Create a centre parting and section off from ear-to-ear in a radial parting and clip out of the way to braid later. Then take one-and-a-quarter inch sections
“
and twist around the same sized curling tongs in opposite directions, spraying each section as you go with the luminous hairspray. - Unclip the front sections and generously spray with the dry texture spray to give instant grip and grit - this will make the braids easier to manage and mould into a braid. - Then create two parallel braids on each side, starting in the middle at a slight angle directing back. Combine these four braids into a low half pony-tail using a clear elastic band. - Finally, spray the waves at the back with the dry texture spray to separate them and add some volume. Finish with a light mist of the luminous hairspray to set the style in place. Then off you go, picture perfect!

The trip takes you from the Caribbean to the Pacific Coast through diverse scenery – including national parks, forests and volcanoes – and arrives each night at eco-friendly lodges and hotels. There are a total of five full-day walks and three shorter ones, and you will be walking along well-established trails, which lead to specially selected
viewpoints. You can also take a dip in the natural pools and waterfalls as you pass. Starting at San Jose, you’ll travel to the north east of Costa Rica to Tortuguero national park, where you will discover a small lagoon next to your lodge for the evening. You’ll head to the local towns in the evening and then onto see the endangered green turtles (whose baby turtles hatch on the beach from November to January). Next up is kayaking through the vast jungle lagoons to see the jungle from a different perspective. You’ll continue on to La Fortuna, passing banana, pineapple and sugar cane plantations, an extinct volcano crater and far too much wildlife to count! From there, you’ll move into Arenal with its unique features, including a crater lagoon and the famous La Fortuna waterfall. After a few days hiking through pasture-
lands and mountains you will reach the striking, turquoise river leading to the Rio Celeste waterfall. The next few days see you discover dry forests filled with waterfalls, the famous, bubbling mud pots, the steaming vents in the earth, hot springs and of course, the endless and varied wildlife. There are many different species of monkeys living within the forest, including howlers and the white-faced capuchins, along with 257 species of birds. Finally, before you leave, you’ll be able to indulge in some well-deserved TLC next to Samara Beach, complete with coconut palms and a coral reef. The climate there is fairly humid and the hiking level of this trip is moderate, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. All food is included along with all accommodation and travel throughout.
