Welcome to West Weddings autumn 2012

A

fter a pretty disastrous few months in terms of weather, everyone in the UK is hoping for an Indian summer this autumn – the chance to feel the sun on our backs for just a few more weeks. But whether it’s wet or dry, if you’re marrying this autumn you are guaranteed a beautiful wedding, with all the gorgeous colours and motifs that the season offers. Autumn is my favourite season, and when I got married myself, so it’s fitting that the autumn edition of West Weddings is my first as editor. I take over the editor’s chair at an exciting time for the magazine, as we continue to expand our digital offering alongside our print – check out our website and blog (more details on p.50) for even more from the world of West Country weddings. This edition is, as ever, chock full of inspiration for brides and grooms. The beautiful Old Down Manor in South Gloucestershire was the scene for our photoshoot, where we looked back to the roaring twenties to create a wedding with the help of local experts. Sleek dresses, pearls, dinner jackets, a vintage car and the photographic skills of David Brewin all combined to produce a wonderful day. Check out the write up on pages 53-61, and also see our blog for more photos, including behind the scenes shots featuring a camera-shy peacock! And with our usual mix of news, features and ideas, we once again aim to bring you the best the West has to offer for your nuptials. I hope you enjoy the magazine – please let us know your thoughts by emailing us on westweddings@venue.co.uk or by tweeting us on @ westweddings. Happy planning!

entertain you

Next to your wedding ceremony, your reception is the biggest part of your wedding day, and once you’ve decided what you’re eating and drinking, you then have the important job of deciding what entertainment will keep you and your guests happy! Unfortunately this can often be overlooked and a hasty decision is made leaving the evening with an average party. If you want something to get your guests’ feet tapping, then Cue Entertainments have in excess of 20 years’ experience in the entertainment business. Cue can tailor its disco shows to your specific requirements, with playlists that you control – so no cringeworthy songs such as Agadoo by Black Lace creeping into the mix! Cue can also provide special effects, such as flames, uplighting to light up areas of your venue to match your wedding colour scheme and projections of photos onto a screen, meaning this will be one reception that your guests won’t forget in a hurry. GROOMING THE GROOM Since opening just over three years ago, Bristol-based men’s hairdresser RSR Men’s Hair has built up an enviable reputation among Bristol’s style-conscious men, by combining the finest traditions in male grooming with the latest in contemporary style. A determination to ensure that RSR continues to stand out from traditional barbers, together with keeping up to date with the latest techniques and hair styles and offering a stylish, welcoming environment, has seen this city centre business grow every year and enjoy a loyal following amongst Bristol’s fashion-focused men. Thanks to her dedication and attention to detail, owner and lead stylist, Rachael

Lavis, has built a successful business, with loyal customers who wouldn’t trust their hair with anyone else; the perfect person to take care of your hair, before, during and after the big day. “Grooms preparing for one of the most important days of their life should be taking care of their hair leading up to the wedding day, making sure it’s cut regularly and in tip top condition on the day,” says Rachael. Rachael and the talented team at RSR are well placed to offer advice on styles, hair care and suitable products, to ensure that the groom’s hair looks as good as the bride’s on their special day. The Catherine boots will ensure you‘re stylish and dry on your wedding day.

IT’S RAINING IT’S POURING If what we’ve experienced over the past few months is anything to go by, it just shows that brides need to be prepared for any eventuality when it comes to the weather. With the British rain in mind, The Welly Shop has launched a range of ‘weddington’ boots – perfect for those about to say their vows outside! Weddington boots are ivory in colour, meaning they’ll co-ordinate with any gown, and are ideal for keeping your feet warm and dry while still looking fab. Whether you’re having a completely outdoor wedding with a festival theme, or just want to have some photos taken outside without ruining your indoor shoes, these boots are the answer to your problems. For those ladies who always eschew flats in favour of heels, The Welly Shop also has the ‘Catherine’ range of heeled wellies, inspired by the Duchess of Cambridge’s love of knee high boots. Catherine boots have a pretty pearlescent finish and come with a cream satin ribbon, which you can also customise to your own colour scheme. W: WWW.THEWELLYSHOP.COM

ALL UNDER ONE ROOF It’s a double celebration for Bristol shop The Wedding Works this autumn, as it has its second birthday in October and also moves premises to a larger shop in Gloucester Road. The Wedding Works prides itself on exquisite wedding services under one roof, meaning that couples only have to make one visit to the shop to find a complete range of suppliers, including a photographer, florist, chair covers, buntings and favours. This has proved extremely popular and Peri Said, the owner of the business, has decided that larger premises are a necessity. The new premises in Gloucester Road are over double the size of the old shop, which means much more space for people to browse. “Often parents and friends come in with couples to help choose things for the wedding, making it a lovely social occasion,” explains Peri. “Our new shop means we have much more space and it’s a more comfortable and welcoming experience for everyone!” In the last two years, it’s not just the actual size of the shop that’s grown - the suppliers

have also increased the range of services they offer to couples. “For example, Little Miss Thingz started out just offering favours but has now branched out to include in-house designed tiaras, bunting and balloons,” says Peri. “Our suppliers have found their niche and put their talents to good use!” The Wedding Works’ partnership with the Bristol Hotel is also going from strength to strength. The shop and this central Bristol venue came together earlier this year to create the ultimate wedding package for brides and grooms. “We have a very good working relationship with the Bristol Hotel,” says Peri. “Its location in the city centre means there are great opportunities to showcase some of Bristol’s architectural gems in your wedding day, such as the docks. Our open evening last March at the venue was a great success and it’s proving to be a popular service with brides and grooms who want a chic, urban wedding.” THE WEDDING WORKS 427 GLOUCESTER ROAD, BRISTOL BS7 8TZ T: 07931 859986 W: WWW.THEWEDDINGWORKSBRISTOL.CO.UK

Your wedding planning may be going swimmingly but sometimes every bride needs some help with decision-making. We have our industry insiders on hand to help out with your dilemmas.

Dressing to impress

Flower power

Arriving in style

I don’t want to squeeze all my closest friends and family into a bridal shop with me, so how do I decide who to bring with me to choose my gown?

My wedding is in October but I have my heart set on peonies for my bouquet. What are my options?

I’m looking for a chauffeur and am overwhelmed with choices. What should I be looking for in a chauffeur for my wedding day?

Morgan Swank, Weston-super-Mare

Molly Boyd, Salisbury

Meredith Lewanowicz, Bath

Nicky from A Class Brides says:

Tina from Tiger Lily Flowers says:

Kelly from White Diamond Chauffeurs says:

Choosing your wedding dress is a very personal experience, so it matters who you choose to bring with you. I have seen too many brides turn up to their appointment with seven people in tow, only to result in a crowded shop, and too many opinions to deal with. Make sure you bring people who know you well and will be looking out for what you want and what looks best on you. Try to avoid bringing people who will be unenthusiastic about a dress you love simply because it doesn’t match their personal taste. I personally like the idea of just bringing your mum – it’s such a wonderful experience for the two of you to share together. It’s always comforting to have a second pair of eyes helping you choose your dress, but at the end of the day, as long as you feel and look amazing in what you’ve chosen, it doesn’t matter what other people think!

Although the beautiful classic English peony is not available in October, there are many alternatives which look deceptively similar. Many even offer the pleasant fragrance that peonies have. There is a farm in Ecuador which specialises in open, English style, old fashioned roses. These flowers are available most of the year and have a wider range of colours than peonies do, and in some cases even better. They come in beautiful varieties such as a creamy ‘Alabaster’, pink or red ‘Piano’, and varieties in caramel colours – just to name a few! I use them almost exclusively year-round because of their range of colours and their constant availability. They have lots of layered petals and look almost exactly like peonies, so nowadays almost every bride’s wish can be answered!

You need someone who’s on hand, who’s helpful and who puts you at ease during your wedding. You get a lot of nervous brides and grooms, so I tend to build up a rapport with my clients before I meet them, so that when I do meet them it’s like I’ve known them for a long time, and when I walk up to their door I’m not a stranger. I make them feel at ease, and like nothing’s too much trouble. The little details are also important; I always colour my car to the wedding theme and have handmade decorations. Any little requests can be also accommodated – I’ve had brides asking me to pass the graveyard so they can say hello to their dad before the wedding. It’s your day and a good chauffeur will ensure your final drive as a single lady is just as you wish!

Kate Hacker explores autumn’s inspirational potential as she constructs a seasonal wedding.

risp, cold air meets warm, cosy colours as autumn rolls in. With it comes rich, deep hues, a longing for satisfying, homey foods, and an enchantment with the outdoors that only fall leaves can awaken. While the months between summer and winter are generally considered ‘off season’ for weddings, getting married during this stunning season provides a wealth of creative inspiration for your big day. First of all, let the colour palette of autumn set the tone for the wedding. Don’t stop at the obvious colours (red, orange, and yellow) however; delve into the nuances of autumnal tones by incorporating cream, mustard, aubergine, sage and rich peach. Autumn also comes with its own set of rich textures and motifs as well, all of which can be used to create eye-catching décor. Wood, fallen leaves, red berries, apples and even gourds will give your wedding a rustic, but festive ambiance while truly revelling in the uniqueness of the season. Incorporate these textures into centrepieces, perhaps arranging some red apples and foliage into an apple-picking basket, or using a carved wooden branch as a table-length candle holder. As an aside – don’t let the word ‘rustic’ put you off. Rustic need not mean unkempt or ill-planned. As a matter-of-fact, no matter the motif you choose, it is the

SummerStyle AutumnStyle

creativity and care that you put into styling and planning your special day will speak the most loudly. These days, the words ‘rustic’ and ‘vintage’ are synonymous with ‘romantic’ and ‘on-trend’, so take the plunge and style away as you create a wedding that is truly your own. While it may seem that brides have a rather narrow selection of style options for their personal wedding day look, there are several ways to include subtle seasonal influences into your dress and jewellery. Try choosing a cream or ivory coloured wedding dress instead of a stark white one. These colours are warmer and blend more easily into the delightful golds and browns of autumn. For jewellery, consider pearls, which have a warmer, more muted elegance than sparkly accessories. Pearls and lace also add a romantic touch if you use them in a fascinator or veil. Feel free to be adventurous with your shoe choice and pick something in gold, mustard or even a deep red. If you’re feeling bold, try a bright red lipstick as a finishing touch. Autumnal bouquets can be a tricky business, as there are fewer obvious options than in spring when everything is blooming. While you may have your heart set on a bouquet of red roses, consider some less overdone colour options such as a combination of burnt orange and aubergine, or cream and sage. Chrysanthemums, goldenrods, spider lilies and sunflowers are just a few harvestblooming options that may cater to your colour palette. Autumn simply wouldn’t be autumn without the hearty comfort food that we all long for as the weather grows colder. If you are searching for an alternative to the traditional wedding cake (or cupcakes), consider serving a simple cinnamon-laden carrot cake or apple cake (or both!). Rustic, indeed, and these options may be too far removed from tradition for many people, but if your ambition is something different, adventurous and delicious, don’t let anyone stop you. If you do lean towards a more traditional cake, have it frosted with a

buttercream icing and adorned with forest fruits. To accompany your cake, a seasonal and money-saving alternative to the traditional Champagne is to serve spiced cider, ginger beer or even mulled wine. The final question when planning an autumn wedding is venue. If you want to truly take advantage of the season and all its natural splendour, consider an outdoor venue. A beautiful apple orchard, lit with fairy lights in the evening, will provide the perfect backdrop for a day you’re sure to remember. Since the weather in Britain is everything but reliable, a marquee is the safest option for ensuring that you and your guests stay dry, and outdoor heaters will keep everyone comfortable. If you can, try to find a marquee that will allow you to open it up if the weather stays nice in order to enjoy the full ambiance of the great outdoors.

COUNTRY GARDEN

Anna and Danny Slade’s spring wedding was an intimate affair that celebrated their shared interests. Helen Dorritt finds out more.

D

anny will never forget the date of his proposal to Anna, since it was all carried out through an advent calendar. “It was a Sunday morning on 6th December,” says Danny. “We both joke about how Anna is so eager to open the advent calendar, so that morning I teased her by saying, ‘don’t forget it’s your turn to open it today!’ I just watched her eagerly searching for door number 6 before finally opening it. She looked puzzled to find there was no chocolate. Instead, there was a tiny piece of paper which was rolled up carefully and tied with a piece of ribbon. She held onto the scroll in one hand whilst the other rummaged around to find the chocolate, which really cracked me up! Then she looked at the scroll and unravelled it to discover the words ‘Will you marry me?’ and I was soon by her side on bended knee with the ring in a box asking her to marry me. She burst into tears but thankfully answered ‘yes!’” Danny’s attention to proposal detail even extended to ensuring the size of Anna’s platinum and princess-cut diamond ring was spot on, by tying a little of ribbon round her finger when she was asleep one night! Danny’s proposal came after the couple had been together for two and a half years. They met at a friend’s birthday party and soon discovered a shared

SUNSHINE AND ROSES A beautifully sunny day meant guests could enjoy the gardens of Stanton Manor

passion for travel, wildlife and literature, all things which they then went on to incorporate into their wedding day through decorations, cake design and hymn choices. The wedding took place on 30th April 2011, the day after the Royal Wedding. For Anna and Danny, keeping it local was important. “We wanted to get married in a typically English countryside setting close to our house in Bristol, and then to celebrate in a nearby cosy venue,” says Danny. The ceremony took place in St Giles Church in Stanton St Quintin, just outside Chippenham in Wiltshire. For Anna, the ceremony was “without a doubt, the best part of the day for me; facing Danny and making our vows together. It actually felt like it was just us together on our own in a beautifully-lit room.” Guests then took a short stroll to the nearby Stanton Manor hotel for the reception, which was perfect for a spring wedding. “Stanton Manor has beautiful gardens decked with roses and tulips. There is also a very old dovecote on site which gave the venue even more character and worked well for photographs,” says Anna. Guests took full advantage of the gardens, with some enjoying an impromptu leapfrog session! Anna’s gorgeous gown was a Mori Lee design and was bought from Sposa Elegante in Saltford. Her silver shoes, a present from a friend in Australia, had a secret twist – the words “I do” emblazoned in blue on the soles! Danny kept it traditional with grey tails from Moss Bros, accessorised by a cream cravat and waistcoat. Florist Anita Bull from Chippenham-based shop Amaranthus created stunning bouquets and buttonholes of pink and white Dolce Vita roses. Hidden in the bride’s bouquet was also a tiny model of a bumblebee, which is her trademark. Anita also went beyond her remit and decorated the stairs of the hotel with roses and fairy lights, and twined ivy around the candles in windows of the dining room. Danny’s sister and his mum’s neighbour kindly got their aprons on and whipped up the delicious wedding cake and cupcakes for the day. “The cupcakes represented our favourite animals and went onto the tables which were named after the same animal,” says Danny. “It added our personal touch to each of the tables and also meant we were able to use the cupcakes as both dessert and the

DETAILS centrepieces. The cake toppers on the main wedding cake were little white icing shapes of all the eight animals our tables were named after.” Although the forecast had predicted rain, the weather gods had other ideas and the entire day was bathed in beautiful spring sunshine. “I loved opening the heavy curtains of the bridal room on the morning of the wedding, anticipating heavy rain based on the forecast, only to find blue skies and sunbeams streaming through the window!” recalls Anna. “I then saw a couple of squirrels leap across the garden in front of my window and the birds were singing – a proper Disney fairytale beginning to the day!” The day’s events were recorded by photographer Ellen Doherty, who is a friend of the couple. “She did an amazing job and it was brilliant having someone we know take photographs on our big day because it is such a personal experience,” says Danny. “Ellen knew our personalities and she really captured this on the wedding day. She was an absolute professional – never obtrusive or making our guests feel uncomfortable about her snapping away to get the best pictures. We wanted to look back at genuine images of ourselves, family and friends all celebrating our day and this is exactly what Ellen achieved.” After spending five months the previous year

Anna describes the day as “unforgettable! I loved every minute. I felt so proud marrying Danny, delighted to have beautiful sunshine all day, relieved that nothing went wrong, and ecstatic to have our closest family and friends with us.” Danny agrees. “There is nothing I would have wanted to change about the day. A FAMILY AFFAIR Beautiful Blagdon in North Somerset provided the backdrop for Louisa and Andrew’s wedding

L

ouisa and Andrew met on a night out in Bristol, finding common ground on their interest in Bristol Rovers although, according to Louisa, “Andrew was surprised I could hold a conversation about football!” Their first date was nearly a disaster though, recalls Louisa. “I pulled up outside where we were meeting to see Andrew walking towards another car with a blonde girl in it, and had to watch him nearly greet the wrong girl” Even though Andrew almost ruined their first date, he gave Louisa a Christmas Day to remember when he proposed. He ended up popping the question while Louisa was still in her pyjamas, after he was unable to wait any longer and follow his original plan of asking while on a trip to London. The wedding took place at St Andrew’s Church, Blagdon, which the couple chose “after meeting the vicar several times and knowing she would deliver a beautiful service and make it personal to us.” The ceremony was followed by a reception at Coombe Lodge, also in Blagdon. “This was the first place we viewed and instantly fell in love with it, so much so that we booked a date the same day!” the couple says. “We loved the fact that the venue was exclusive to us for the day, making it very special.” Tina Bignall of Tiger Lily Flowers used a vintage and purple theme for the flowers. Louisa’s bouquet featured ivory Naomi roses, embellished with a vintage brooch and pinned with pearls. The bridesmaids’ bouquets had lilac coloured Amnesia and Ocean Song roses, and the flower girls carried small wands. The reception venue was decorated with vintage china bowls filled with a mix of Amnesia and Naomi roses, fragrant foliage, eucalyptus and gorgeous purple and white hydrangeas. Louisa says, after initially being unable to describe what she wanted, the flowers “took my breath away on the day” and were exactly what she had envisioned. Louisa’s lovely A line, strapless gown with a ruched front was by Maggie Sottero and bought from Just For You in Bristol. Andrew wore a smart grey suit from Tux and Tails, accessorised with a deep purple cravat and handkerchief which picked up on the colours of the flowers. Albert Palmer was the photographer for the day, whose laid back style was just what they wanted. And as well as documenting the day in photographs, the couple chose to tap into the latest wedding craze of making a marryoke video, which featured their guests singing along to Phil Collins’

Luckily the British weather obliged for once, with 24th July 2011 being warm and dry. The good weather also meant that Andrew could surprise Louisa with fireworks in the evening. For Andrew, “the effort and wait was all worth it just to see Louisa walk down the aisle and to have such wonderful friends and family. My highlight was looking across the room to see all my friends and family sharing the day with us.” Adds Louisa: “Everyone says it is the best day of their lives and it truly was - I felt so special all day. I was so happy to marry Andrew and we are now looking forward to becoming parents in a few weeks.” WEST WEDDINGS 21

WITH LOVE Kristal and John Shaw took full advantage of Bristol’s beautiful architecture for their July wedding. Helen Dorritt talks to the happy couple.

J

ohn knows that food is the way to people’s hearts. He presented his future mother and father in law with a tray of Krispy Kreme doughnuts when he first met them, and then proposed to his bride Kristal over a picnic containing her favourite foods. This didn’t turn out quite as planned, however. “Knowing Kristal’s love of the New Forest, I took her there on our third anniversary, with the aim of proposing outside over a picnic. Unfortunately it rained all weekend so the picnic and proposal had to be held in the bedroom!” says John. The change of venue didn’t change Kristal’s answer though, and John sealed the deal with an engagement ring he had picked out from his family’s jewellery shop. When it came to deciding where to say “I do”, it was an easy decision as John and Kristal were ➻ WEST WEDDINGS 23

lucky enough to be one of the few couples eligible to have a ceremony at Bristol Cathedral, since John was granted a scholarship to Bristol Cathedral School and attended the school for 7 years. His association with this twelfth century building lent a particular resonance to the vows. “The ceremony was really special, within the huge cathedral that I spent so long in whilst at school, particularly as I had my friends and family around me,” says John. He’d also wanted a traditional, grand ceremony and the ancient architecture of the cathedral was certainly able to fulfil this wish. Guests then hopped on a vintage double decker bus to travel to the reception venue, the Grade II listed Engineers’ House in Clifton. The couple wanted to hold their reception in the centre of Bristol, in a venue that was unique and which they could put their own stamp on. One of Kristal’s dreams had also been for a Georgian building, so the Engineers’ House was ideal. The venue has a marquee up for 2 weeks a year so John and Kristal were able to make full use of this as well as the beautiful period features of the main house, with its stunning Bath stone façade of graceful pillars and elegant balconies. After seeing his work at other friends’ weddings, Kristal knew she wanted Lee Hatherall to be their photographer. “Lee has a real talent for getting the perfect photos,” says Kristal. “He has a range of fantastic lenses so was even able to get the wide cathedral shots.” John’s sister is also a photographer who took more relaxed photos in the evening. As well as John’s daughter as bridesmaid and John’s niece as the flowergirl, Kristal’s seven best friends were “unofficial” bridesmaids, who wore their own dresses in pink to complement the wedding colours. “They were a great support to me with organising the wedding and hen party so I wanted them to feel an important part of the day,” explains Kristal. To match the number of ladies, John had two best men. John and Kristal took advantage of modern technology by having their own wedding website, where guests could find information about the venues, see the gift list and pick their meal. Guests were asked to name a song they would like to be played in the evening, which the couple reasoned would make people more inclined to dance later on! One of Kristal’s favourite moments was her first dance with John. “We had planned a slow dance to Elbow’s ‘One Day Like This’ which then segued into the Pulp Fiction dance scene which we had choreographed. No one expected this!” Despite a July wedding day, the weather mirrored the day of the proposal and yet again rain made an appearance. “It was so heavy that when the father of the bride stood up to do his speech, he had

PRETTY IN PINK: Kristal’s ‘unofficial’ bridesmaids complemented the wedding’s pink colour scheme.

to shout over the rain! I wasn’t prepared for it either so the day before I was rushing around the shops to buy a wedding umbrella,” says Kristal. The rain couldn’t spoil the speeches, however. “They were fantastic, and the groom even got a football joke in there where he was comparing the two loves of his life!” laughs Kristal. The rain also obligingly stopped for an hour which enabled the couple to have some photographs taken in the grounds of the Engineers’ House and for guests to enjoy ice creams from a specially-hired van. The wedding was the result of a year of planning and Kristal was thrilled with every moment. “As I sat in my seat on the top table and looked around the marquee I could see all the faces of our nearest and dearest with us, chatting, drinking and having fun. All my work over that year had come together to make the venue look fabulous, just as I had imagined.” “I wouldn’t change a thing about it,” adds John. “Well, maybe a little less rain - but I don’t want to be too picky!”

A big fat Greek

SUN, SEA AND SAND James and Laura’s wedding took place overlooking the sea, and ocean hues were also a theme of the day.

I

t all began in Greece – well, a Greek restaurant that is. Couple Laura and James celebrated Laura’s 30th birthday at their favourite Greek restaurant, Soustas. Before the evening was over, James, whom Laura describes as a hopeless romantic, popped the question with “his last Rolo”, a solid solver Rolo engraved with “will you marry me?” Laura happily said yes and James slipped her great grandmother’s ring onto her finger. Inspired by the setting of their engagement, the couple began to plan their destination wedding in Skala, on the Greek island of Kefalonia. Despite living nearly 2,000 miles away from its location, the couple put their faith in wedding planner extraordinaire Donna from Kefalonia Weddings. Donna organised every detail of the wedding, from the paperwork in both countries down to the button holes. A quaint chapel overlooking the Ionian Sea captured the beauty of Greece as the couple’s ceremony venue. For the reception, James and Laura opted to go to Sally’s Bar for Pimms and champagne immediately following the ceremony, and then their favourite taverna, Apostolis where they treated guests to a Greek meze spread. James and Laura added several personal touches to their wedding, including favours which doubled as name cards and small glass bottles filled with Skala sand and adorned with bright Grecian blue ribbon. Mediterranean blues, also swathed the bridal party. “From the start, James decided he wanted a pale blue suit which we found in Next, to complement our bridesmaids who would be in a vibrant Greek blue,” Laura says. Though she changed her mind several times, Laura finally found a dress inspired by their coastal theme at Just for You Bridal in Bristol, a lace fishtail gown by Grace Harrington. While the dress may have been a tough decision, the flowers for the wedding were not. “From the moment we got engaged I knew I wanted sunflowers,” recalls Laura. “In our family they are a reminder of my late grandfather who always grew sunflowers in his garden.” Unfortunately, the family also suffered the loss of Laura’s grandmother two weeks prior to the wedding. However, “in a last-minute request,” says Laura, “Donna the wedding planner added white chrysanthemums as a reminder of my nan, which meant so much to us and our special day.”

Unsure of what to expect from a Grecian hair stylist, Laura opted at first for a simple side bun. Her sister Claire, however, wouldn’t let Laura give up on her real dream of having a gorgeous Grecian hair style with lots of plaits. During Laura’s hen do, Claire arranged a trial hair session with Hair and Graces in Weston-super-Mare, including a stunning hairpiece that matched the detail on her wedding dress. Won over, the bride took the plunge and, with the accompaniment of many photos, asked the Greek hair dresser (who ended up being English) to replicate the look. This June, after arriving in Kefalonia, the couple enjoyed a relaxing holiday before the wedding festivities began – twice! James and Laura officially became Mr and Mrs Baker in the mayor’s office with Laura’s sister and her husband as witnesses. Laura admits that needing to have two ceremonies was a great excuse to buy an extra outfit: a lacy cream dress and matching shoes! Finally, however, on 17th June 2012, James and Laura said their vows before 20 of their closest

family and friends beneath the Greek sunshine. When the time came to exchange rings, the “hopeless romantic” in James came out again as he surprised Laura with a stunning 14 carat white gold and white sapphire engagement ring. The couple then gave each other a spoonful of honey to represent the sweet life that they will lead together. James and Laura’s nuptials were truly full of pairs – two ceremonies, two outfits, two rings and even two cakes! “When we arrived at Sally’s Bar they had decorated the bar and bought us a second wedding cake as a present!” says Laura. “The whole day was amazing and one we will never forget,” recall the couple. And to any bride who dreams of a destination wedding, Laura says: “Go for it!” WEST WEDDINGS 27

ALL THE

RAINBOW You don’t have to be all white on the night, says Helen Dorritt - choose a fabulously coloured dress instead.

Veronica’s coloured wedding dress was a real head turner.

B

lame it all on Queen Victoria. After she wore white to her wedding in 1840, fashionable brides in the UK and beyond took up the trend which is still continuing 170 years on. Prior to the royal wedding, it was a case of anything goes with red, blue, brown and grey as popular hues in which to say “I do”. These days, although it’s hard to avoid white and its sister shades when shopping for your wedding dress, there are alternatives out there which means you can be as vibrant as you want. Since bridesmaid dresses are usually the coloured garments in a bridal party, you can always look to these ranges for inspiration. Many designers such as Dessy have a huge range of styles, materials and colours available. If you’re after a traditional, full length gown, then Dessy’s Lela Rose styles LR172 and LX167 will fit the bill perfectly, both of which are available in a mouth-watering range of shades including african violet, firecracker and marigold. Or if you fancy something a little different, try the Dessy 6649 with its ruched bodice and vertical ruffle bias skirt – our favourite colours are ocean and tutti frutti. High street shops are also a good option for coloured dresses. Monsoon’s Lorton dress in navy, with its silk overlay and v neck back, would make a fabulous wedding dress. The ruched bodice and internal boning of Coast’s Symphony maxi dress lends itself well to saying vows, and is available in bright blue and scarlet – perfect if the Jubilee and Olympics have left you feeling patriotic! Another option is having a coloured dress made especially for you, which means you can be very precise about the shade and fabric. Veronica Wardell from Bath is someone who did just this. Having always chosen the abstract over the ‘norm’, Veronica decided to have a coral/orange wedding dress and reversed tradition by having the groom in white and the bridesmaids in ivory. “Having lost considerable weight prior to the wedding I wanted

a dress which would accentuate my new figure. Many of my guests I hadn’t seen in years and so it was a double ‘wow’ when I walked down the aisle in such a vibrant colour,” recalls Veronica. Veronica’s dress was designed by specialist wedding dress designer Catherine Miller. “Catherine specialises in creating unique, high-quality silk designs, and allowed me to work closely alongside her to design a dress which was completely my own,” says Veronica. Veronica’s coloured theme also extended to her accessories, having bespoke jewellery made for her and the bridesmaids, using the Swarovski crystals the colour of her dress. Veronica also had her shoes dyed the same colour as her dress – all three pairs! “I had differing heel heights to get me through the day, which was a great excuse to buy several styles!” laughs Veronica. Fashionable and practical – that’s our kind of woman.

SUITS PLANNING IDEAS

A bit of forward planning will ensure the members of the stag do have smiles on their faces, not tattoos.

ABSOLUTELY

STAGGERED Carla Yorukoglu looks at ways to ensure that this all-important male ritual doesn’t turn from a stag do to a stag don’t.

W

ith everything from flowers to seating arrangements to think about, the period leading up to a wedding can be riddled with anxiety. While many brides may say that they want their fiancé to let their hair down and enjoy their stag do, this claim is often marked with an underlying sense of panic and an unmistakable twitch of the eye. The reality is that the night is more likely to include several rounds of strip poker than a tame game of rummy. Although the groom has his conscience to answer to, his team of stags will undoubtedly be planning a night of mischief. The question is, how do you strike the right balance? How can you leave single life behind without waking up to a Hangover-style catastrophe? (If you haven’t seen the film, think a mixture of Mike Tyson, a tiger and a Kung Fu fighting drug dealer.) To avoid facing a morning of regret, have a look at these tips for a memorable but guilt free last night of freedom. GUESTS As William Shakespeare penned in the fantastic Henry VI, “unbidden guests are often welcomest when they are gone”. With this in mind, the number one priority should be ensuring that guests are close friends of the groom and not

acquaintances. (What about that man in the corner of the office who makes you a cup of tea? You don’t even know his name.) Everybody has that one person they feel they should invite, but this is often for the sake of ‘keeping up appearances’ and not a genuine will to see them at your stag do. The stags are a vital part of the groom’s last hoorah and they can make or break the event. Ensure people are chosen who will get on with one another – you don’t want any bust ups - and more importantly choose people you want to join in with the revelry. Perhaps a little more difficult is the issue of the groom’s father. It all depends on each individual’s situation, but remember that they will be swelling with pride at the thought of their son getting hitched. If you don’t want your Dad to witness any of the wild antics you may want to get out of your system, include him in other events you have planned. And don’t forget - he can share some priceless advice about how to make the transition into married life. EXPLORE Are your wild partying days over or do you simply prefer to avoid the chaos of a booze cruise? Don’t despair as there are plenty of alternative activities that the groom and his stags can do. With the impending wedding getting even closer, it is understandable that a last foray into freedom will be craved. Try paintballing, a fantastic way to channel your pre-wedding jitters and achieve that all important adrenalin rush. Other great sporting activities include go karting, quad biking and sky diving. Just be sure to plan this with plenty of time to spare before the wedding; you don’t want to stumble up the aisle as a result of a painful paintball injury.

SAY NO TO STRIPPERS Responding to whether

he was going to have a stag night before his wedding

to Crystal Harris - which Crystal later called off - Hugh Hefner candidly said: “A stag night? I’ve been having a stag night for the past 50 years.” Remember that your beautiful bride needs to be at the top of your priorities, and indulging in a sordid stripper show is not the way to start your life together. Take Prince Harry’s lead as he arranged a tasteful weekend for William’s stag do, free from scantily clad women. DRESS CODE Most stags will employ fancy dress as this makes them stand out from the crowd whilst unifying the group. Be spontaneous, original and creative. Too many men in Borat-style mankinis have braved the cold British weather recently for a wild night on the tiles. If you would like to flash less of the flesh, there are plenty of ideas. I recently came across a jovial group of stags resembling Snow White and the Seven Dwarves - and of course the groom was Snow White. Our editor’s husband was dressed up in an all in one pink lycra bodysuit. So think outside the box and make the most of this opportunity to make the groom blush. PRANKS When planning pranks on the groom, think about the consequences. While shaving the groom’s eyebrows may seem like a good idea at the time, this must be off the agenda. You certainly don’t want to face the wrath of the bride who will want beautiful wedding photos of her and her husband. And yes, by ‘beautiful wedding photos’, I do mean with full body hair intact. Throughout the event you shouldn’t go wrong if you keep the bride at the forefront of your mind. But don’t feel guilty indulging in last minute revelry with the boys, as it is safe to say that your fiancée will let the reins slip a little during her own celebration - the equally important hen party! GROOM WITH A

VIEW There’s something special about fitting out your male team in formal finery, says Mike Gartside.

A

s various family members never cease to remind me, I can be a scruffy so and so. I take my clothes pointers from the Just William manual of sartorial elegance and need fashion like a fish needs a bicycle. On most formal occasions, I’ve got by with an off-the-peg suit and the same pair of smart shoes, wheeled out once a year for the last decade and a half. But, as Cath and I were planning our wedding, I started to feel more seriousminded about my groom’s outfit. In part it was out of respect to her: she puts a lot of importance on being well turned out and the shabby suit would have sent all the wrong messages for our future together. But, strange as it may seem, I actually wanted to do this for myself. While I’ve always mildly mocked some of my elders for their insistence on tails and pin-striped trews at a big event, I started to hanker for that sense of camaraderie and occasion that a flamboyantly attired groom’s party always seems to enjoy. Several factors came into play. First, my teenage son, Jack, more familiar with trainers and hoodies, had never seen the inside of a gentleman’s outfitters in his life and the thought of getting him into a suit rather tickled me. Then there was the practical side of things: my best man, Dave, and my father-in-law to be, Ken, promised to turn up in a hotch-potch of

Mike and best man Dave strike a pose

Lee helps Mike pick a suit, while Mike’s son Joe steals the limelight

mismatching suit/jacket combos which would have done no justice to their special status on the day. What clinched it, though, was the thought of kitting out the newest member of our family, Cath and my two-year-old son Joe, in a miniature version of the chaps’ regalia. As we eventually discovered, he was to look even more heart-meltingly cute than usual. I must confess I didn’t shop around too much – I’m a busy guy and when the solution to a problem stares you in the face, you jump at it. Cath had found the dress of her dreams at Anne Harding in Stoke Bishop, Bristol. Away from my prying eyes (and much to my budget-fixated relief), she’d found a gorgeous gown at a very reasonable price. It just so happens, I discovered, they hire out all manner of suits for grooms and their party as well. As Cath was oohing and ahhing amid a closelyguarded bustle of fabrics up the staircase, I was busy preventing Joe from re-organising the stock downstairs, helped by the affable and utterly charming Lee, who’s in charge of Anne Harding’s men’s department. I made a mental note to come back. When the time came, the process of choosing and fitting the suits could not have been easier, in spite of a series of logistical challenges on my side. Dave and I turned up for the first session, about three months before the wedding. Dave said he was happy to wear a morning suit but drew the line at top hats,

which was fine by me. Likewise, neither of us would countenance way-too-traditional pinstripes. But I was particularly struck by the swirly waistcoats. I was having one of them and no-one was going to stop me. Complementary to that was a sveltelooking grey ensemble in featherlight mohair which felt and looked a million dollars – but with a price tag considerably lower. Amid the click and clatter of tape-measures and photo shutters, Lee told us that, yes, the morning suit was originally a mourning suit for funerals but had been adapted for happier occasions and that we should leave the bottom button of our waist-coats undone out of respect for Henry VIII, who had been unable to squeeze his girth into the fastened object. “Was he the one who had six wives and beheaded two of them?” asked Jack when informed of this nugget. “That’s the one,” said Lee. Jack paused and nodded sagely. “Fair play.” When Ken came to be fitted he used his ex-copper’s banter to give Lee a run for his money – and at the expense of my own girth, it must be said. Lee chose a purple cravat for me, to match the theme of the wedding and to mark me out as the groom, while the others wore cream. At one point I eyed up a stylish brown suit but Lee looked at me sternly and shook his head. Something to do with the colour of my eyes, no doubt.

As novice wearers of formal gear we felt in completely safe hands with him. He was always chatty and efficient and never flummoxed. The fact that Jack grew by an entire suit size in the two months between fittings left him completely unfazed. It was no problem for him to go up two days before the wedding and fit Jack with a completely new outfit. Once kitted out, we looked like the dream team, little Joe and all. Almost as importantly, it was an amazing bonding experience for the male members of the new family. The final and most important endorsement of Lee’s skills were Cath’s lovely whispered words at the ceremony... but that’s another story.

perfection PLANNING TO

Kate Hacker shares her tips for grooms to get involved in wedding planning without stepping on the bride’s toes.

W

edding planning comes with plenty of pressure and stress without worrying about whether or not you’re shouldering enough of the burden or becoming more of a hindrance than a help. But with a little forward planning, you can ensure that you provide the support your wife-tobe needs, without causing the ‘too many cooks in the kitchen’ scenario.

ASK

As you probably well know, each woman is different and your fiancée is no exception. Some brides want to have complete creative control and oversee every detail of their special day. Others may be more laid back or simply feel they need some extra help in order to get it all done. Even if you are 90% positive that you know which category your fiancée falls into, don’t make the mistake of failing to ask how you can help. She may delegate a handful of things (such as hiring suits/tuxedos), or she may ask you to shoulder half the responsibility. Either way, your offer to lend a helping hand is a thoughtful gesture that indicates your desire to be involved. This will be appreciated.

DON’T ASSUME

Wedding planning provides the perfect opportunity to hone those communication skills that become so crucial in marriage. Your bride may be the type of woman who takes on the world at her job while balancing a thriving social life on the side, but don’t assume that the idea of planning one of the most memorable days of her life doesn’t have her flustered at all. On the flip side, even if your lady is a delegator and thrives on balancing her commitments, don’t assume that planning a wedding is going to overwhelm her. Ask questions. Find out what she is most excited about, what scares her the most, and think about how you can help.

TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

Whatever your role becomes in the wedding preparation process, ensure that you take full responsibility and play your part as best you can. If your to-do list includes scouting out musicians to entertain at the reception, don’t leave auditions to the last moment. Also take responsibility for ensuring that you and your fiancée are on the same page in terms of your desires, and make decisions accordingly. Don’t hire a ceilidh band if she was hoping for mellow jazz from someone with the voice of Frank Sinatra. Play your part with gusto and don’t begrudgingly give it a half-hearted effort.

CHECK IN OFTEN

Your sweetie may have been calm, cool and collected during the first month of wedding planning, and when you offered to help, didn’t really take you seriously. Two or three months into the process, the situation may have changed entirely. Don’t underestimate the likelihood of your responsibilities growing or lessening as time goes on and the planning process gets well underway. Check in frequently and ask questions such as, “Are you still feeling confident about ____?”, “Do you still want me to be responsible for _____?”, “I know you’re a bit worried about ___, why don’t you tell me how I can help?”

DOUBLE-CHECK THINGS

Nothing is worse than finding out a month after a crucial decision has been made, that you have got your wires crossed and something has gone wrong. Your fiancée asked you to do X, and you did Y. You thought you booked X, but Y and Z turned up. Your backup plan fell through. First of all, roll with the punches and don’t get overly worked up about mistakes like these. Be flexible and encourage your fiancée to be as well. Second, in order to avoid such issues in the first place, check, check and re-check all the details

for which you are responsible. Yes, ask your bride for the third time whether or not the suits you’ve picked out are the ones she likes. Doublecheck that the caterer really does know that your wedding is on a Friday evening instead of a Saturday morning. It may feel like overkill at the time, but when you discover that you’ve averted certain disaster you’ll be happy you doublechecked the details.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

Wedding planning can be an emotional and stressful business. Even if you don’t have a to-do list a mile long, don’t underestimate the important role you play in making sure your bride stays sane and happy. Family issues rubbing her the wrong way? Find out how to run interference and smooth things over. Freaking out because the seamstress says the dress won’t be altered until the day before the wedding? Remind her that everything will be okay, and then find out how you can offer practical help. Ultimately, be a cheerleader for the work that she is doing to make your wedding a day to remember, and approach everything with the attitude that in the end, if you get married, the wedding has been a smashing success.

T

he Artist. Upstairs Downstairs. The Great Gatsby. The 1920s look is all around us at the moment, so it’s no surprise that West Weddings looked to this era for our autumn photoshoot. As Gatsby himself said: “Can’t repeat the past? Why, of course you can!” As the sunlight streamed through the windows into Old Down Manor’s beautiful atrium, we knew this shoot was going to be something very special. The fantastic David Brewin was at the photographic helm, and we had a stunning bride and groom in Jessica and Tian from modelling agency Shoot DHS. David Hill-Souch, director of the agency, was also on board as our art director for the day. Our team of wedding experts put together a day time and a night time look for our bride and groom, featuring dresses and suits selected by Truly You, accessories chosen by Amanda Davis-Harrison at Bridezillas, bridal hair and make-up by Ria Jones from Hush Hairdressing, groom’s hair by Emily Williams from RSR Men’s Hair and flowers by Tina at Tiger lily Flowers. Our shoot also featured England’s Finest Cars, Poppy in Pearls, Clifton Bunting and Hope Designs. When recreating the 1920s, outfits are key, and Truly You in Thornbury was able to ensure we ended up with the perfect look. The shop was established two and a half years ago by Lynn Lovell and is run with the help of her mother Verena Mildren, who came on the shoot to help our bride and groom look their absolute best. The dresses for our shoot were chosen by Lyn to encapsulate the sophisticated look of the 1920s. While the simple and elegant silhouettes lend themselves perfectly to a vintage feel, Verena reports that they are also becoming very popular among those who choose a non-traditional wedding venue, such as a beach or a barn. “With these venues, brides don’t want big fluffy dresses – they want something that is easy to carry, easy to wear, and fits itself to the surroundings,” explained Verena. So whether you’re reaching for a throwback to the flapper era, or choosing a creative location for your ceremony, a light, sleek dress can be an ➻

excellent choice. When it came to the accessories, the simple silhouettes of the dresses allowed room for necklaces, headpieces, bracelets and more, and luckily we had Amanda from Bridezillas on hand to provide them. “The Great Gatsby look is the next big thing!” she stated, and she had the accessories to prove it. Pearls, feathers, head bands – all of them featured in our shoot to help create the right period look.

DAYTIME

For our first daytime look, Jessica wore an Impression gown, style no 11532. The dress has a beautiful back, which would definitely create a wow factor as you say your vows! Amanda teamed it with accessories from Ivory & Co –a Dinah headpiece, £117, a Monaco necklace and bracelet, £67 and £47, and Paris earrings, £22. For the second look, we paired a one-shouldered Mascara dress, style MC166040, with a stunning Morgan headpiece by Ivory & Co. “Side tiaras and hair pieces that sit low on the forehead are straight out of the Jazz Age,” said Amanda. The look was completed with a pair of Bridezillas’ own in-house designed earrings (£32) and a Swarovski bracelet (£44). For our daytime shots, Tian was resplendent in a sand coloured Peter Posh suit with cream waistcoat and flame red tie, which provided a dapper counterpoint to Jessica’s elegant gowns. He also wore a pair of silver acorn cufflinks (£34.50, Poppy in Pearls). When it came to the hair and make-up, Ria from

HUSH Hairdressing and Emily from RSR Men’s Hair did a lot of research beforehand. “If a bride or groom is drawing on a specific time period, we will make sure that hairstyle and make-up is authentic as possible,” explained Ria. For our bridal look, Ria put Jessica’s hair into finger waves and then styled it into a low side bun. Moroccan Oil was then smoothed on in order to create a glossy finish. Our groom Tian was given a strong, closelycropped coif, slicked down with high-gloss wax from American Crew. Emily said that the 1920s look is becoming more and more popular among men, be they grooms or not. The essential elements of the look consist of hair clipped short on the sides, left a bit longer at the top, and parted at the side. In the 1920s make up became more popular and socially acceptable, so Ria used a bold eyeliner with false lashes to really bring out Jessica’s big brown eyes. Foundation and base was kept minimal in order to showcase Jessica’s perfect complexion, with just a sweep of warm blush applied to the cheeks. Ria then used a coral red to emphasise the lips, again in keeping with 20s style. To show off her wedding ring, Ria also gave Jessica an elegant French manicure.

NIGHT TIME

The evening draws in and the sun’s over the yardarm… it’s time for a gin or two on the terrace. Jessica gets ready for the evening by relaxing in a stunning Liberty print silk robe (£106 from Poppy in Pearls), an Olivia tiara by Abigail Grace, £89, Natalie French gold necklace, £85 and vintage lace cuff, £46, ➻

before donning two evening style wedding dresses - style no 6915 from Impression (£370), and a Veromia dress, style VR61168 (£985). The strapless Impression dress, in white satin with a diamante drop on the bodice, was accessorised with a Chicago feather headpiece by Madeline Isaac-James, £110, bracelet by Bridezillas, £36, earrings by Blossom, £25, and gloves by Natalie French, £18. “Gloves are also very popular at the moment as a great way to reference the 1920s’ look,” explained Amanda. For the Veromia dress with its delicate diamante detail and gently flared skirt, the split belt detail on the dress was echoed in the shape of the headband (Marcia by Ivory & Co, £147). The look was finished with a bracelet by Bridezillas, £32 and earrings by Blossom, £31. Ria also changed Jessica’s hair to an evening style, bringing it down from its bun to let it tumble in elegant curls over her shoulder. To match Jessica’s cocktail party elegance, Tian donned a dinner jacket with black bow tie and cream waistcoat, a sophisticated and classic look that works well for an evening wedding. Silver RAF Spitfire cufflinks (£34.50 from Poppy in Pearls) completed the outfit.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER

“It’s brilliant, absolutely brilliant,” says David Brewin of his job as a photographer. “It’s got to be one of the best jobs - apart from being a Ferrari test driver!” David’s passion for his craft,

even if slightly eclipsed by his dreams of being a racing car driver, is evident as soon as he opens his mouth. He and his wife Kathryn Francis have together photographed more than 100 weddings. “We get on so brilliantly all the time and we know what the other is doing,” he said. Their partnership allows the couple as a team to ensure they capture images from every angle. When asked what sets them apart from other photographers, his immediate response was: “What we don’t do is follow fads.” David aims to take beautiful classic shots that will stand the test of time and be treasured for decades to come. Another of the team’s aims is to stay out of the way as much as possible so that the bride and groom simply feel like David and Kathryn are a couple of guests. “We get the shots we want,” he said, “but we’re not obtrusive. I think that is a real skill.” One of his favourite compliments is hearing “we hardly knew that you were here!” after spending all day photographing a wedding. David takes particular pride in his wedding albums, which are produced by Queensberry albums in New Zealand. Due to the trend of only supplying wedding images on a DVD, David believes that this is going to be known as the decade of the lost image, since photos that exist only in an electronic form have a tendency to get lost in the shuffle and never be printed, revisited and enjoyed. An album is a lasting memento of the biggest day in a couple’s life, which is why he is so committed to providing one.

THE VENUE

“A lot of people who come here are looking for that country house feel,” said Olivia Mills, General Manager of Old Down Manor. The manor house, built in 1856, combines elements of grandeur and warmth that appealed perfectly to our photo shoot. Old Down Manor looks like a Victorian house on the outside, but inside has a distinct marriage between old and new, with contemporary lighting fixtures and muted décor. Since 1856 the house has changed hands several times and even survived a devastating fire in the 1950s. Its current owners are Arron and Katya Banks, ➻ WEST WEDDINGS 57

“I looked outdoors for a minute, and it’s very romantic outdoors.”

who opened the house as a wedding venue in 2011 after two years of renovations. The Banks wanted the manor to feel like a house, with no visible televisions or telephones, something which it definitely achieves. The hall in the entryway is grand but inviting, the small sitting room off to the side is the perfect place to sip coffee or a cocktail, and the upstairs bedrooms – particularly the bridal suite – feature breathtaking views of the grounds and the River Severn in the distance. Olivia says that it’s tough to pick a favourite aspect of the manor, citing the “friendly staff, massively good service and great food” as contenders, but she did admit her particular love for the grand hallway. “It’s a real wow factor with two massive chandeliers that came from San Francisco.” “What we’re trying to offer people is an experience,” Olivia said. And Old Down Manor delivers.

THE BRIDE AND GROOM

Jessica and Tian are both new to the world of modelling but have already made a big impression, with demand being high for them to feature in magazines and adverts. Both are represented by Shoot DHS, whose director, David, did a brilliant job of art directing the shoot, ensuring the look we ended up with was “quite innocent – not provocative”. Both models enjoyed being a bride and groom for the day, especially the chance to dress up in clothes they wouldn’t normally wear. Jessica also loved her low side bun from the daytime look. For Tian, “I enjoy creating the artistic side of the images and seeing how it all goes together.” With such great models, it all came together beautifully.

THE FLOWERS

“I just love this venue,” stated Tina from Tiger lily Flowers, so our gorgeous bouquet, buttonholes and floral decorations were created specifically with Old Down in mind, as well as using flowers that would have been available in the 1920s. Jessica’s bouquet used a brand new rose variety from Colombia, Fragrance Abund, which is a stunning two tone flower in crimson and pale peach. Mango calla lilies and red hyperricum berries picked up the autumnal hues. Tina also included rosemary as foliage, both for its appearance and to add a delicate scent. The bouquet was bound in an orange ribbon and secured with pearl topped pins, pearls being considered a lucky stone for brides. Tian’s buttonholes used similar flowers to the bouquet plus a more unusual white originum thistle, and the bowl and candelabrum were overflowing with velvety red Naomi roses, green 58 WEST WEDDINGS

“In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne....” hydrangeas and bay leaves. “It’s possible to use traditional flowers but to have a contemporary twist,” explained Tina. “All of the flowers for the shoot would have been readily available in the 1920s, but we gave them an up to date look – the perfect mix of old and new.”

THE CAR

If we’re being truly authentic, then the Beauford car in our shoot is really a few years too early to have been driven by Jay Gatsby, since Beaufords are based on a 1930s design. But we’re sure that if it had been around, Jay would have definitely approved. Sixteen years ago, after being a bride herself, Jayne Hobbs decided to start her own business, buying three ivory Beauford convertibles and starting England’s Finest Wedding Cars. Since then she has brought on board seven other lady chauffeurs (referred to technically as ‘chauffeuses’) and her business has blossomed. All of the company’s chauffeuses are married, so they know exactly what it’s like to be in the bride’s shoes. “We’ll come in to the church service or civil ceremony if needed to help out with the dress or anything,” she said. “Sometimes all they need is that person to talk to on the way to the wedding.” Jayne takes pride in setting her brides and grooms at ease. And her favourite part of her job? “When I see the bride’s face when they see the car.”

THE PROPS

If you’re looking for decorations for your wedding, or for an unusual gift for a bride and groom, then a trip to the Poppy in Pearls website is definitely in order. Launched in February this year, this online boutique aims to provide brides with a range of items, all of which are made by independent craftspeople right here in Blighty, who owner Sarah Ross finds via word of mouth, Twitter and hours of internet research! “Poppy in Pearls started after I planned my own wedding. I found it difficult to source beautiful British made products, so I wanted to create a resource for creative brides-to-be,” said Sarah. “The site is wedding orientated but everything on it can also be used as a birthday gift or similar.”

THE BUNTING

The Beatles said that all you need is love, and that’s certainly the case with our beautiful padded bunting seen in the ceremony shots. Created by Eirlys Fernihough of Clifton Bunting, who also made the traditional triangular bunting used to drape the chairs, it was the perfect backdrop for Jessica and Tian to say ‘I do’. Clifton Bunting started out four years ago and has gone from strength to strength, creating beautiful decorations for weddings as well as other special occasions. In addition to its pre-made range that’s available to hire, Clifton Bunting can create bespoke bunting to match any colour scheme or

theme. “The lettered bunting came about from a customer asking me if it was possible, and I found it was!” said Eirlys. “I can also do any other shapes that you’d like – it’s totally customisable.”

THE STATIONERY

Asha North found that the lure of creativity was stronger than her desire to continue a career in the law, and so founded Hope Designs this year. Her training in graphic design came in handy when designing her own wedding stationery, and it so impressed her sister-in-law that she asked Asha to create the invitations for her wedding too. From this, Hope Designs was born. Asha can create all the paper goods for your wedding, from save the date cards and invitations to place cards, table plans and order of services. All products are made using hemp embossed white and cream cards, plus a mixture of paper and card layering, paper punches, embellishments, raffia or ribbon, and sometimes a sprinkling of glitter for good measure! For our shoot, Asha custom made the invitations to fit the 1920s theme, drawing on the iconic black and white graphics associated with the era. WEST WEDDINGS 59

HONEYMOONS

ON THE GO Stuck for ideas on where to take your first holiday of married life? Sophie Shorland looks at a new trend for honeymoon backpacking.

C

limb the Great Wall of China, scubadive in the Caribbean, explore the Pyramids… and backpack? Welcome to the world of ‘flashpackers’: a form of high-end backpacking that is becoming increasingly popular for honeymooners. ‘Flashpacking’, or luxury backpacking, is itinerant travel where you can wander at will, but involves nights in luxurious (or quirky) settings, and not minding paying a little extra for whatever will make your trip an unforgettable experience, be it skydiving or spending a night sleeping under the stars in the desert. Ideal for adventurous honeymooners who want more than to lie on a beach (although feel free to include plenty of that too), this form of travel retains the excitement and flexibility of traditional backpacking with a welcome injection of opulence. Duncan Simpson from the Youth Hostel Association has a broad rule of thumb: “the less you spend on accommodation, the longer you can travel”. Many hostels abroad and in the UK are offering upscale rooms to accommodate the trend. Flashpacking also makes sense in financially difficult times, for people who want to experience more on their honeymoon without bankrupting themselves with hotel bills. Some people label flashpackers ‘geeky backpackers’ as they tend to travel with more electronics than your traditional ‘chuck a T-shirt

in a bag and go’ backpackers, but you don’t need to be loaded down with iPod speakers and this season’s Louboutins to have a good time. Lay out everything you need on a bed, then take away half. You don’t need six pairs of jeans to travel around Kenya, or tanning oil and seven bikinis for hiking in Norway. Think about what’s appropriate, and what you can comfortably carry around on your back. Liam Curtis from Taunton Leisure advises doing your research in advance; dependant on terrain and country you’ll need different gear, from mosquito nets and rehydration tablets to thermal underwear. He also advises a properly fitted backpack, and while you’re packing and repacking to make sure “heaviest items are packed closest to the small of your back” to avoid any injuries. The beauty of backpacking is that it’s inclusive, non-judgemental and about really trying to spend some time understanding every aspect of where you are, so what better type of holiday to celebrate your new union with your partner? Just remember to send us a postcard…

ruit cake Traditional wedding cakes are usually fruitcake, but really, who actually likes fruit cake? Stick to the well-loved Victoria sponge with strawberry jam. Not only is it yummy but it’s a lighter alternative after the 3 course meal. Pointy wedding shoes The lethal looking shoe which is outdated in high street fashion, but somehow perfectly acceptable to wear with your bridal gown. Move on; go with a peep toe or elegant looking round toe design. Tiaras This really should go without saying, but unless you happen to be Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s or the Queen, a tiara is going a bit overboard. If you want a way to add glitz to your hairstyle, add a jewelled headband

instead. Red carpet Just because it’s your big day doesn’t mean you should turn it into a celeb styled event or catwalk show. Eyes will be on you no matter what, so tone it down. Keep it sophisticated by scattering rose petals on the ground instead. Loose hair Make sure your hair is safe against autumnal gusts of winds with an elegant up-do. Fake nails Acrylics, quite frankly, can look cheap and nasty. If you don’t want ‘fake’ to be written all over your wedding photos, keep your nails plain and simple with nude colours. ROMANCING the stone

An engagement ring is for life, so make it special. Charlotte Le Lohé looks at ways to ensure yours is personal to you.

I

n the time between the engagement and the wedding, your left hand will be the most looked at part of your body, which is all down to ‘the ring’. Whether it’s a surprise or something you and your partner plan together, all eyes will be on it once people find out you’re engaged. Although diamonds still rule when it comes to the engagement ring, and the hardness and clarity of a diamond definitely has its advantages, one way to make this very special ring even more special is to use your birthstone. In fact, a quick poll in the West Weddings’ office revealed two ladies sporting birthstone engagement rings, an emerald and a moonstone. It can sometimes be harder to find rings using more unusual precious or semiprecious stones, but this can actually be worked to your advantage so you have a ring custom designed, just for you. What better way to ensure something totally unique? Clifton Rocks in Bristol is one local jewellers who offer this service, with owner Clare Chandler able to work with you to create a piece of jewellery that you can guarantee noone else will have. With autumn fast approaching, we look at the birthstones for September, October and November.

September For those born this month, sapphires are the traditional birthstone, a favourite amongst the royals - one of the most famous rings in the world, now worth over £250,000, is the Duchess of Cambridge’s 12 carat oval Ceylon sapphire. Sapphire is one of the four precious gemstones, among diamonds, rubies and emeralds. The sapphire’s distinctive blue colour is

due to minute amounts of iron oxide and titanium in the stone. Sapphires can also come in shades of yellow, green, pink, orange and brown, and there is a very rare colour change version if you really want the wow factor!

October The traditional birthstone for this month is the opal. The name is thought to have come from the Greek word ‘opallios’, which means ‘to see a change in colour’. The Roman poet Pliny loved opals, believing them to combine all the best characteristics of other gemstones, “so that all colours shine and sparkle together in a beautiful combination“. Generally the opal occurs in several colours, presenting a variety of delicate tints and shades, from milky white to rose, magenta, blue and black. The fiery interplay of colours comes from small spheres of silica gel causing refractions of light. The majority of the world’s opals are mined in Australia, and various Aborigine legends and tales about the dreamtime feature this gemstone.

CONTACTS CLIFTON ROCKS 100 QUEENS ROAD, BRISTOL BS8 1NF T: 0117 973 1342 W: WWW. CLIFTONROCKS.CO.UK

The birthstone for November is orange topaz, also known as precious topaz. This beautiful stone has associations with myths and legends throughout the ages: the Egyptians affiliated it with the sun god Ra, and the Romans linked it with Jupiter, the king of the gods. Topaz also has protective properties in several cultures against harm, including the belief that it changes colour in the presence of poisoned food or drink. Topaz scores 8 on the Mohs scale, the way jewellers measure the hardness of a stone, meaning that it’s a good stone for a ring that will see a lot of everyday wear. If orange isn’t your colour, however, you can get topaz in a range of other colours. Pure topaz is colourless and you can also get blues, yellows and pinks.

BeInspired the registrar not turning up, but there will be a number of small things that won’t go according to plan. At my mum and dad’s wedding back in 1973, the icing on their cake wasn’t set properly so one tier collapsed. At ours, we had to battle against the sounds of the rugby match at the school next door to our outdoor venue, in order for our guests to hear our vows. But the good news? 99% of your guests won’t notice. You and your partner may realise that the candles have been placed in the wrong holder, or that the font on the programmes really should have been 12 point not 14, but I can guarantee that these minor hiccups will simply sail over most people’s heads. Those that do notice will be enjoying themselves too much to care or judge you on it. Trust me. And if you do realise that something isn’t the way you originally planned it to be, you’ll be so into the day that it will barely register with you either.

IF IT ISN’T DONE BY THE DAY BEFORE, FORGET ABOUT IT

Pearls of

WISDOM Helen Dorritt shares the fruits of bridal hindsight.

O

n October 9th 2010, after nine months of planning, I was busy getting married to my husband Steven. Eighteen months on, we’ve now celebrated our anniversary (paper or cotton, depending on whether you favour the British or American system), we’re looking forward to the second anniversary (cotton or paper, depending on whether you favour the British or American system), and I’ve had a nostalgic trying on of my dress (still not cleaned, still just about fits). Whenever I happily wander down memory lane and reminisce about the day, I often think about all the little things that happen with a wedding. There are plenty of magazines, websites and blogs to advise you on the big decisions: what order the day should take, which

readings to select and how you should address your invitations. There are also some things, however, that I learned from the whole wedding experience that don’t tend to get shared as much but which I feel are just as important. So, with the benefit of nearly two years’ distance from the event, I hereby present my pearls of wisdom for brides and grooms about to walk down that aisle.

THINGS WILL GO WRONG

Oh yes, they will. Most definitely. No matter how many hours you spend planning and plotting and writing spreadsheets, once the ceremony begins things are beyond your control. With a bit of luck these will be pretty minor, rather than day-ruining events such as

The last thing you want to be doing is stressing about some last minute task at the expense of relaxing and enjoying the run up to the day. If something’s not done by the night before and it’s not absolutely vital to the wedding, i.e. a legal requirement, then forget about it. The day before our wedding, my bridesmaids and I went for a manicure and pedicure. We were laughing and joking with each other when one of the beauticians commented that she’d never seen such a happy and relaxed bridal party, as her usual experience was of ladies coming in stressed about the wedding. I thought this was a real shame; that people had managed to wind themselves up so much that they were unable to enjoy the treat of being professionally pampered. Although it’s often easier said than done – I am a typical Type A personality when it comes to relinquishing control - let go of last minute details and just relax. You’ll feel much better for it.

TAKE A MOMENT

A lot of brides warned me about how quickly the wedding would fly by, and they were quite right. It seemed that one minute I was walking up the aisle and the next I was throwing my bouquet. So I made a concerted effort at particular points during the day to stop, detach myself from events and just soak it all in. One stand out moment for me was pausing before I started to walk down the aisle to take in all the faces before me – after all, when else do you get to have everyone you love in one place at the same time?

ENJOY YOURSELVES!

It might sound obvious, but it’s so easy to get caught up in ensuring everything is perfect for your guests that you can forget to enjoy yourself too. A wedding is like nothing else you’ll ever experience; it’s a day of love, laughter and emotion. Make sure you get everything you possibly can from it. After all that planning, you deserve to. And the biggest piece of advice I can give you? As long as by the end of your wedding day you and your partner are married, that’s all that really matters. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

TO THE MANOR BORN: Old Down Manor was the perfect location for our photoshoot and can be the perfect location for your wedding too.

ANCIENT &

esting between picturesque views of the river Severn and the Black Mountains, Old Down Manor is the perfect combination of tradition and modernity. The Victorian manor house oozes charm with its gothic architecture and lovely timeworn exterior, which is then complemented by a truly stylish interior that will suit all needs. You reach Old Down after driving up through a tree lined avenue, where it sits in 60 acres of well-kept gardens, serene land and age-old woodland. The house has very recently undergone a remarkable renovation creating a stylish interior that tends to needs of a modern day guest, yet sustains its historical exterior. The Manor House is licensed for civil ceremonies so the property can be exclusively yours for the entire day. With the capacity for up to 120 guests for a wedding breakfast and 200 for an evening reception, this venue has all the qualities required to provide you and your guests with a beautiful setting for your wedding. There are also 13 well-furnished

bedrooms that are perfect for any guests wishing to over afterwards to enjoy the venue for a bit longer. Old Down Manor offers three packages to every couple in order to find prices that will suit you best. Based on three different levels of expenditure, the packages are designed to offer you with a wide variety of services that will compliment your budget. “We realised that selecting all the appropriate items and services to make your day a special and memorable one can be a very stressful task,” says General Manager Olivia Mills. “So in response to enquiries about fixed standard packages, we have designed this range to suit a variety of pockets. But to be honest there is nothing ‘standard’ about our offerings. Each provides a passport to a dream wedding!” The top package, named ‘the Champagne package’, provides discounts on a broad range of services such as photography, hair dressing, flowers and stationery. The other two packages, ‘the Prosecco’ and ‘the Cava’, also include complimentary use of the bridal suite that looks out onto the glorious view of the Severn Bridge.

A PHOTOGRAPHER’S DREAM The gothic stonework of Woodchester Mansion is a great backdrop for wedding photos.

VICTORIAN

SPLENDOUR

N

Britain’s best kept secret is waiting to open its doors on your wedding day…

Patron: HRH The Prince of Wales

Woodchester Mansion is one of the world’s most extraordinary and unusual buildings – an unfinished masterpiece of Romantic Gothic style, now a special heritage experience nestled in the sweeping embrace of a hidden valley. Standing untouched by time since the height of the Victorian era, this most beautiful and haunting building is now an unforgettable wedding setting, waiting only for your entrance… Dramatically beautiful and timeless – qualities to share forever. We are licensed for civil marriages and civil partnerships, which we can cater for up to 200 guests. For further details please contact Hannah McCanlis on 01453 861541 or email office@woodchestermansion.org.uk

estled deep in the heart of the Cotswolds valley stands an architect’s dream. After being mysteriously abandoned in 1873 during construction, Woodchester Mansion has remained untarnished by the modern world and has a look of timeless beauty. Since the house is unfinished, it offers visitors the opportunity to see how a house of this period was constructed and also provides the perfect backdrop for your wedding. Stepping into the grounds of Woodchester Mansion is like entering a secret garden. Being hidden away provides you with the opportunity to spend your wedding day in a world of your own. Leading up to the mansion is a mile-long driveway that sets the scene for the romantic venue. However, there’s no need to fear the long walk because the mansion will provide transport for all guests from the car park directly to the Woodchester’s charming doors. Visitors then walk into an architectural exhibit in which secrets of the builders and masons are whispered through some of the most beautiful carvings of their kind, including four spectacular gargoyles, symbolising the hunt and reflecting the history of the site, two dogs with splendid teeth, a fox and a perfect wild boar with spines and a twisted nose. Following on from a public vote in June 2012, Woodchester Mansion and its surrounding park are now both among the Cotswold

‘Seven Wonders’. This award marks their originality; a quality that is perfect for a unique wedding experience. The mansion remains picturesque throughout all seasons. If you’re planning an autumn or winter wedding, the gothic feel of the building will create a hauntingly romantic setting between the frosted branches. Celebrating your marriage at Woodchester also means spending your day in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, guaranteeing you a beautiful backdrop whatever the season. The mullioned windows with their impressive stonework are perfect for looking out onto this view. The mansion is licensed for civil marriages and civil partnerships which can cater for up to 200 guests. For the reception afterwards, Woodchester Mansion has partnerships with highly qualified caterers who have fantastic experience in working for a variety of events, particularly weddings. Delicious food, a breathtaking location and classic architecture – it’s a match made in wedding heaven.

fter a few years in the wilderness Tracy Park has emerged from the shadows as a guiding light in the world of weddings and events. Situated in the beautiful countryside of Wick near Bath, it’s hard to imagine a more idyllic setting. This beautiful and historic mansion house has stood the test of time; not only is it mentioned in the Doomsday book, but the courtyard bedrooms, previously the Manor House stables, were also the setting for Anna Sewell’s book Black Beauty. An extraordinary investment of over £1.5 million has been made to bring the Mansion House up to date and ‘Carriages’ is a stunning new suite of 18 rooms, completed in early June. These beautiful and spacious rooms are furnished in luxury with all the comforts of home, to five star standards. Each room has a glorious view, either of the

lush green fairways of the Cromwell Course, or the dominating façade of the Manor House. Tracy Park has not only invested in its facilities, but its staff too. Each event now has a personal organiser to ensure that every request is dealt with efficiently, and to see that every wedding or corporate event goes without a hitch. This means that no matter how big or the small the event or request, Tracy Park staff will ensure you get the best possible service.

Last Word

A GIFT

horse Charlotte Le Lohé believes gift lists are the best way to avoid receiving six toasters but Steven Webster feels they lack the personal touch.

YES

Being a guest at a wedding can sometimes be stressful. There’s sorting out the travel arrangements, the hotel, the new outfit, the babysitter. Don’t make it even harder on your guests by making them trawl the streets for hours to find a gift they think you’ll like. A gift list makes their lives a lot easier. It’s also better for you and your partner. Picture this: the big day has finally arrived and it all goes to plan, the ceremony runs smoothly and the after party is a ball. Next you get to look forward to opening all the presents, before jetting off on your long-awaited honeymoon. You relax with a glass of wine, your new husband or wife sitting next to you, and you commence the unwrapping, eager to see what people have thoughtfully bought to mark this special occasion. But what’s this – a set of antique floral china plates? You hate antiques and can’t bear to hear the word ‘vintage’ mentioned. Hey ho, you think, and you move onto the next box. Ah, gardening gloves – but you don’t have a garden. You unwrap the next gift: his and hers dressing gown in baby pink and blue. Hideous. And it goes on, and on, and on. Well, prepare yourself, because this is what happens when you don’t opt for a gift list. There’s more: after having to find house space for everything unwanted, you then you have to fake the “thank you, I love it!” reactions to family and friends, which is always hard when it’s for something you hate and have no use for. And don’t even think of sending things off to the charity shop – you’ll have to fish them out of the back of the cupboard every time the gift giver pays you a visit. Providing a gift list means you get to suggest – politely - to family and friends what presents you would most like, ensuring you – and they avoid disappointment. If you’re worrying about affordability and whether your guests would be happy spending specific amounts of money, remember it doesn’t have to be pricey and most high street shops such as John Lewis and Debenhams suit all price ranges.

NO

A wedding is one of the biggest events in anyone’s life and, as with all rites of passages, such as birthdays, the giving of a carefully chosen gift is one of the best ways of celebrating the occasion, as well as the opportunity for a guest to show their appreciation of having the honour of attending. Now, I’ve attended many weddings in my day and seen a variety of types of gift lists, but I’ve never been presented with a list for someone’s birthday. What makes a wedding so different? I think the biggest issue I have is being told what to buy and where to buy it. I have a car and the time to get to specific department stores, but I know it can be difficult for grannies to schlep into John Lewis. True, many gift lists are online these days, but are you sure that every one of your guests are tech savvy? Those grannies again

may have a hard time. Another problem involved is the cost. It feels awkward if you arrive late to the list if the only items left are a washing machine and a solid silver serving platter, which are beyond your planned budget. Similarly, you might see something on the list which is ideal, but you know where to buy it cheaper, which then leads to the problem that if it’s not ticked off the official gift list then the happy couple may well end up with two. Above all, gifts from a list lack the personal touch. If you’re attending a wedding there’s a pretty good chance that you know the happy couple very well and your present to them should reflect that, from the gift inside to the way you wrap it and the tag you write. A gift bought “off the peg” just doesn’t convey the message I want. Nothing beats the personal touch and your own special flourish.
