Letter from the

editor

I

t’s that time of the month again! That special time where I get to give birth to yet another one of my creations. Yet again, I was faced with the challenges of trying to make this magazine while only being 16, but things seem to always work out no matter what. This is the first issue where I actually decided to add on some very talented new writers to the crew! It was an exciting experience working with each of them. I didn’t want to be one of those editors that just took whatever the writers gave me without inputting my creative direction into each piece. With each new contributor, I helped perfect each piece. I decided to deem this ‘The Power Issue’ for three reasons: content, quantity, and (most important) quality. I wanted to make this biggest and best issue yet, and I hope that you’re as pleased with it as I am. With that said, I would like to remind you that I created WeTheUrban Magazine as a place for all of our Urbanites to escape to for 10-20 minutes out of the month to return out a little bit more fashion/culture savvy and inspired. Enjoy!

Guns, Germs and $teal words :

At first look, the name Guns, Germs and $teal is enough to make any fashion goer dart to the nearest clinic for a tetanus shot. But behind their lethal image, Smiley Stevens and Philippa Price have created an accessory company to rival any street market found deep in the heart of Harlem. And despite their relocation to Los Angeles, these two twenty-something white girls hail from none other than New York City. Their stamped and hammered

LANDON PEOPLES

metal wallets have an underlying (yet somehow, quite obvious) loom of city life and danger with their impressionable rap quotes embedded into them. And while GG$ may have a hard exterior, their green approach to manufacturing the billfolds from reclaimed materials and recycled fabrics adds the perfect touch of exclusivity and consciousness the earth (and our pocket) needs. No vaccinations here, but we’d love a dose of their gangster charm!

Due to the weather, most people seemed to be dressed focusing more on comfort than style. But, in the true name of fashion, he managed to find quite a few trendy people in the rain. photographer

resort favorites words

Eileen DoĂąiego de France

With summer well underway, it is hard to imagine life beyond our current surroundings filled with leisure (my sincerest apologies to those stuck in a stuffy classroom or office), much less envision next year’s summer shenanigans and the outfits to accompany them. But into the future we must go, as the fashion world never sleeps and a stylista must always be ahead of the curve to achieve the perfect aesthetic! Resort 2012 fashion week came and went, leaving many of us awed and inspired to update our current summer outfits. With a few other seasons ahead of us, summer 2012 is quite a wait from now, but until then we may study the designers who really seemed to stand out and fit our style standards.

versace I

f there is something to be said about this collection, it is that it is youthful and fun! Versace’s resort collection boasted of flirty punk pieces that could easily transition from day to night, and from summer to fall. Stepping away from the sporty trend that many designers were going for, the Versace label stuck to feminine cocktail dresses, cropped jackets, and sexy boustiers.

Many of the pieces were of the black and white variety, with a few dresses that displayed splashes of tropical color that complimented the rest of the collection well. Grommets, exposed zippers, and cutouts set a punky/youthful feel, but it was the much talked about floral insets featured on many of the cocktail dresses that provided a little punch seduction. Very sexy and very Versace, the insets curve in such a way to give anyone a boost in physical sensuality - no matter the body type!

20s flapper, 60s go-go, or 70s boho chic? It would seem that the house of Missoni was all over the place with their decade influences, but who is to say this is a bad thing? Whatever the influence, the Resort 2012 Missoni girl is off to the beach and ready to turn heads! The mix and match of decades not only worked to create a modern look, but also complimented the beach motif paired against the classic Missoni zig-zag. It is mix and matching at it’s best. The entire collection was eye-catching with its call to the sea palette of coral, aquamarine, and deep purple. Sea shell prints and embellishments woven into shift dresses and gowns kept true to the resort rules of carefree days of relaxation, while the psychedelic turbans left Missoni fans grasping for more. Perfect for a stroll out on the beach, expect to see DIY versions of Missoni’s turbans holding back the locks of the most stylish and fashion forward girls.

A fashion favorite for many, Celine Resort 2012 defied what would normally be considered resort wear. With a color palette more suited for the fall season, Phoebe Philo took the Celine label and created a look that was somehow anti-resort while sticking with slouchy silhouettes to provide breathable functionality in a “resort way. The collection was fashionably sexy, cleverly sheer and effortlessly put together. It is as if the model herself rolled out of bed (undoubtedly in the PJ set within the collection),

wetheurban 60

put on the first items of clothing she touched from her closet, and threw them on without a care in the world. Aside from the seemingly anti-vaction statement Philo seems to be making, the collection was awe worthy through her bold use of materials and patterns. Oversized floral skirts and three-piece suits, a gray coat made of latex, blouse-y trousers in both basic and eye-popping colors, and leather paneled dresses. This is the Resort 2012 line for the ultimate cool girl. Her life is not to live on vacation, it is to live in fashion.

celine.

diane von Furstenberg

wetheurban 62

F

Loose-fit separates, color blocks, and funky graphic prints ruled this collection, providing a freshness that defined “resort”. Perhaps the best thing about DVF’s collection was that anyone could wear these pieces. Mix and match tops and bottoms to create a funky street look, or take a sport coat to one of the mini dresses to create the perfect happy hour outfit.

or the most adventurous and sporty, there is Diane von Furstenberg. DVF’s Resort 2012 collection was a call to surfers and skaters, despite the “hip-hop with a romantic edginess” that Yvan Mispelaere and DVF were going for. The entire look beamed - literally - of neon youth and casual sports wear fit for both California and Florida’s sunny boardwalks. Even the messenger style bags glowed purple in the dark (not entirely sure if the purses will be available this way - but it would certainly make a raver kid’s dream).

Who most influences your style? When I was growing up Betty Grable was a big influence on me. The 1940s is my favourite era for beauty and for clothing, and the movies that she made were these big Technicolor pieces – for me they were just spectacular, with all the colours coming alive. My style icons are women who dared to be different, and women who didn’t rely on stylists to create their look; women like Marlene Dietrich, who famously wore a lot of her own wardrobe for her films, and had definite ideas of what she would wear both onscreen and off. Do you have any favorite particular designers or places to shop at? Over the years, I have found that there are always designers that love classic clothing references and consider timeless elegance to always be chic. Some of my favorite houses are Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Moschino, YSL, Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton. Nearly all of my shoes are Christian Louboutin-- he’s a very close friend, and makes all my show shoes custom. I love Stephen Jones hats too. I have been collecting vintage clothes for the past 20 years, so I still search for great vintage finds, one of my favorite places in Los Angeles to search for vintage is The Way We Wore, and I also find great things on ebay and from various vintage dealers that know what I like. What is one of your favorite items in your closet? I couldn’t pick just one item! I have lots of vintage pieces that I love. I’m not a vintage clothing snob by any means –I buy things that I like and I want to wear, I have things in my vintage wardrobe that actually cost me $10 and they look fabulous. I have a few haute couture pieces in my closet, like a gown Jean-Paul Gaultier gave to me, and a 1954 Dior New Look Haute Couture suit, which is my prized possession! But one of the reasons that I started buying vintage is that I couldn’t afford designer clothes, so I still get that “thrill of the hunt” feeling, and that satisfaction when someone says “ohhh is that a Prada dress?” and it’s a pleasure to say “no I bought it off ebay for $50”! w e t h e u r b a n 74

Talking Style With

Dita Von Teese words

WILLIE GREENE

She’s provocative. She’s seductive. She’s classy. Self-created modern mistress of burlesque, Dita Von Teese, regularly tops the ‘best dressed’ lists and fashion blogs with her signature Hollywood pinup 1940s glamorous style. She puts the “tease” in striptease. WeTheUrban takes a peek into the mind and closet of the burlesque bombshell.

behind the frames:

he Vintage Frames Company 77 wetheurban

meet |corey

shapiro

The visionary and brains behind The Vintage Frames Company. Aka the world’s leading distribution company of designer vintage companies. With fashion trends focusing more on the past, people often overlook the importance of finding the perfect shades to complete their vintage look. Since age 13, Corey Shapiro has been a fashion industry buff and collector of vintage eyewear. For the past 5 years, The Vintage Frames Company has been personally outfitting some of the most

wetheurban 78

fashion forward celebrities and trendsetters with sunglasses for photo shoots, videos, and special events where cutting edge fashion is a must. From Lady Gaga to Cee-lo to Princes, Corey Shapiro has worked with them all. Brand new father of his first son, Cash, Mr. Shaprio’s passion for vintage eyewear is paramount. Not only does The Vintage Frames Company provide you with the sickest inventory you’ll ever see, but also a thorough history about each frame they sell.

So how did it all start? What got you into fashion and eyewear? I grew up in the fashion industry. Each of my family members had a very different job, each influencing my up-bringing. What got me into eyewear was growing up around people who always commanded a presence based on what they were wearing on their face. To me, all the people who were REALLY DOING IT back in the day were in big influential frames. Â

What was the road to building your company like? Was it all worth it? We took a very different approach than most people. For one, none of us are opticians or have any technical optical back round. Secondly, none of us look like we are optical dudes. Big beards, big chains, big dogs, big frames. We had to overcome stupid stereotypes while paving the way for a new generation of eyewear fans. At the end of the day, our goal is to educate. It is very important for us that the 79 wetheurban

memory and importance of the fashion aspect of eyewear stays alive. At the end of the day, for me, it’s not about money; it’s about loving what I do. The fact that I can come to work and be wowed day after day is just outstanding. Vintage clothing and accessories has seemed to gain a cult-like following within the past few years. Do you have any idea why this is so? Why people find vintage so much more trendy than modern? Vintage styles really were pushing evolution of trends and thoughts. These days, most styles are just copies of old styles that people may or may not recognize from their past. As well, qualities of most garments were superior in the past then they are today. Asian and overseas factories cannot replicate the same quality as old school hand crafted works. A couple of us are pushing the envelope when it comes to creating archives around the world for each of the relevant sectors of vintage fashion. My favorites are Michelle and Rene of Catwalk in La, and Jesse Heifeitz of F As In Frank in Vancouver! Another big reason for the boom of vintage is the exclusivity. People want to be different. Why would you want to wear something that was curated to be limited edition, when you could wear vintage and it actually be rare and limited!

Out of all the clients you have worked with, who has to be one of your favorites? Each of my clients bring a different factor of excitement. Not one of them is the same. I really love working with Lady Gaga on her Vintage Sunglasses. The cool thing about her is her knowledge and presence is pretty powerful! I love the fact that she takes editorial style vintage frames and makes them into ready to wear eyewear! I also love working with the average consumer that makes an appointment who really wants to find something daring and different for their face! Any people you haven’t worked with that you would like to in the future? I feel like i would be really geeked out to work with Elton John. A big part of vintage fashion especially on the eyewear front was led by him. I have always hoped to get the chance to talk eyewear fashion with him! We hold an immense Vintage Elton John Sunglasses collection and I would love to see his response! Nowadays, it’s so easy to get a “vintage” pair of glasses for 5 dollars online. What makes your company stand out? Why would someone want to choose you over the rest? We carry rare designer vintage sunglasses

of the deadstock nature. All our frames are original, inspected, and curated to an elite crowd of eyewear enthusiasts! We do not sell cheap, knock off, or replica eyewear. Our frames are VINTAGE FRAMES, not VINTAGE INSPIRED FRAMES. It becomes a status and quality thing. Not to say that people are whack for rocking cheap eyewear, but that isn’t what we do or who we cater to at Vintage Frames! Is the vintage frames market specifically competitive? Competitive, a bit, but not really. There are very few big players, and it is rare that we focus on the same aspects or have the same passion. Is it true that you’re working on a TV show with Amber Rose? We did film some with Amber Rose. We were supposed to be on a show with her. I decided it wasn’t the right time for me as I just had my first born son. I am not really sure if Amber continued with it or not! She is one of my favorite people and I would always do anything to help her out!

What has to be your favorite piece that you own? I think at this point it would be a solid gold Vintage Gucci aviator that my grandfather gave me.... or that I stole from him! I always seem to go back to that frame! What other hobbies and interests does Mr. Corey Shapiro have besides vintage eyewear? Hmm, well, I like to work. I like to shop and dig for vintage, play with my son and bulldogs... As sad as it sounds, that’s about it. I have been very fortunate to develop a job around my passions, if I wasn’t living and breathing it at every moment of the day, we wouldn’t be where we are now! What’s next? We are developing our own line of frames. Pretty out there I must add! Rather editorial and less ready to wear!

Fast Five

with Aly Silverio

She designs and crafts all of her jewelry, she’s designed upwards of 11 shirts, and did we mention she’s only 18? Aly Silverio started Jawbreaking Jewelry when she was just 15 and from the growth of the company throughout her high school years, she has made the tough decision to take a year off of school and pursue her company full time. Made of baked polymer clay, her designers are fun, unique, and cater to an audience of every age! I got the chance to sit down and chat with the young entrepreneurial genius a few days before she embarked on her seven date major city tour with the 2011 Warped Tour for a quick Fast Five session. w o r d s W i l l i e G r e e n e

1. The best band to ever breathe and create music is without-a-doubt.... A Day To Remember. Sorry, it’s not your typical answer like “Oh, The Beatles, duh.” But in my opinion, I think A Day To Remember is great. I’m pretty sure I could relate my life to any one of their songs and I honestly never get tired of listening to their music. I even realized the other day that I don’t have a song I hate by them. I have a lot of favorite artists/bands, but that was the first band that came to mind... the second band had to be Mumford & Sons. I’m obsessed. I’d say I have a very eclectic taste in music and I kind of have a new favorite band every other week. This week, it’s Yellowcard. Last week, it was Foster The People. Eclectic, I tell you.

wetheurban 82

2. Boys are... STUPID. They’re annoying, they’re confusing, they’re whores, they’re all of the above. Most of them at least. I could negatively go on about the male species for quite sometime, but on the bright side, they can be so adorable and sweet. I’m a little boy crazy to say the least. I should probably just keep my mouth shut at this point, I’ll go off about boys based on my bitterness.

3. A few of my guilty pleasures would definitely have to be... Shoes! I even have a shoe closet! I can’t help myself, I just love shoes. I’m really obsessed with wedges right now. My shoe closet is filled with heels, wedges, like twenty different kinds of combat boots, boots in general, Vans sneakers... I absolutely love shoes. The best part is, my mommy loves shoes just as much as I do AND we’re the same size. It’s absolutely wonderful. She just got these Sam Edelman wedges in tan AND black, they fit me perfectly. You can’t expect me to be surrounded by beautiful shoes and not want to buy every single pair! I mean, just shopping in general is my guilty pleasure, I can’t really seem to walk into any store and not buy anything...

4. If you want to be a true fashion designer, you have to... Design what you want to design... actually, no... I say that with too much leniency. Design what you want to design as long as YOU designed it yourself. If you want to be a designer, create something that actually means something to you other than copying it from someone else. You need to be persistent, patient, hardworking, and everything along those lines. Set your goals high, sometimes the most unrealistic goals are the ones that are actually achieved.

5. If I weren’t designing jewelry, i’d be.. I honestly do not even know. Probably nothing. I look back at my life before Jawbreaking so shocked as to what I did before (or lack there of). Like I sit and wonder, “What the hell was I doing before this?” because this consumes my life right now, it’s all I ever do and think about. But I really would not have it any other way. 83 wetheurban

t’s not quite the identity of Banksy, but the reveal of Erykah Badu’s MC moniker DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown is being revealed on her new mixtape. Most notably an avantgarde neo-soul artist and fashionista, Badu is breaking out the turntables to go along with her already ferocious vocal game. She classifies it as dance; and if you love her, you’ll love this. Along with everything that Badu scribbles her name on, all assumptions about this new project can be tossed well outside the club windows.Playing the role of both producer and DJ for the upcoming mixtape, she claims it will be sure to “melt any DJ’s face off.” The original release was projected to drop in April, but now is being pushed back to July to fit in some last minute guest appearances. Badu has done her since she first crooned us with “On & On,” and no money, fame, or Serato endorsement is likely to change that.

T. Mills by

Jason O'Toole

Young. Loud. Bold. Tatted. Gauged. Captivating.

Whether you love him or hate him, rapper/singer T. Mills is catchy as hell. There’s no indifference with him. Between his lyrical content, his Cali philosophies, and his blatant disregard for normality, this self-proclaimed hip-pop artist is on the forefront of today’s youth culture. Posing as a modern day musical Hugh Hefner, this gauged-up tatted-up playboy spits lyrics about his life, his weed, and his women. Beginning his musical expedition at 13 under the alias of a few California pop punk bands, Travis Mills eventually found a home in hip-hop. Following his EP debut with Uprising Records entitled Finder’s Keepers; Mills released his first full-length album Ready, Fire, Aim. Now at the perfect age of 21, T. Mills has only himself to compete with. Claiming Warped Tour, Bamboozle, and even a Ke$ha remix on his list of accolades, T. Mills is supercharged and ready to run the planet with two inked-up middle fingers in the air. He’s coming for that number one spot. Just remember we warned you.

How did you career in music come about? Where did it all start? I’ve been in bands and playing music since middle school, things didnt work out so I decided to do my own thing when I was 19-20. I posted a few songs on the internet and it just grew from there. What type of artists do you listen to? I listen to everything from Queen to Big Sean to Placebo to Das Racist to Simon & Garfunkel to The Cool Kids. I’m currently listening to alot of McKenzie Eddy and new Drake. Do you consider yourself an innovator of “hip-pop”? Yes and no. I know what I’m doing is different. I have my own take on it. I think Wayne dominated that shit when he put out Lollipop. Such a catchy record! Same with Pharrell. Kanye did it too with 808’s. So with that being said, I know im not the FIRST first. I’m not claiming anything. If someone wants to say that about me i’d take it with a smile and a thank you. How was the opportunity of Warped Tour with Babycakes? How did that even happen? My friend Paul Griffiths owns babycakes. He was the sponsor for the tour in 2009 and they gave him a dance tent with a floor and lights and fog machines and shit haha. He basically just asked 2 weeks before the tour started if I would want to play everyday. I had never played a show, so of course I said yes and recorded an EP quick and was on my way. It was real DIY, but for that I’m grateful. I went on a 60 day tour by myself. Sold my own merch, set up my own equip. played by myself, I got to meet all my fans from day 1, and they got to see me before anyone knew what i was doing. If I could do that tour the way I did, I can do any tour. So which was more fun? Warped Tour or Bamboozle? Well they’re both very different. For me, Bamboozle was definitely way more fun because of the bigger variety of artists. Bamboozle 2010 was my first time really playing on the east coast. It was amazing to see that much support. This year was amazing as well. I couldn’t have asked for a better time! wetheurban 118

You’ve done a ton of collabs from Dev to Kyle Lucas. Who would be your dream collaboration? McKenzie Eddy is who I have my ear on at the moment. She’s brilliant. How do you feel about all of the comparisons to Mac Miller? I wasn’t really aware of them [laughs]. Mac is great! I got to see his set at The Roots picnic last month and was blown away. He is definitely on his shit. I feel like we do 2 different things though. I’d love to do a record with him and make some vibey shit. Can you tell us a little bit about Leaving Home? It drops July 22nd and it’s something I’m super proud of. It’s going to give people a chance to see how much I’ve grown/am still growing. Some of the songs I’ve had for months and some I just cut. It’s definitely a slower sound. everyone will just have to download it. What’s cool for me is to know that this is really just the beginning. I’ve said too much... You’ve got so many tats! Any favorites? “Gnarly” on my lower stomach. I love my knuckles, they say “patience”. And I haven’t seen an arm as vibrant as mine. Describe your current life in 5 words or less. to Watch Out For July/August ‘11 Edition

words

Willie Greene

With billions upon billions of views, it’s no secret that Youtube is the single-handed best platform for undiscovered artists trying to make it in the industry. The world renowned Justin Bieber is a perfect testament to that. It’s the power of the internet and Youtube that now give us the luxury of just picking up a camera and recording raw talent for the entire world to see. 5 Youtube artists caught my eye and I predict that within the next 3 years, half (if not all) of them will have made it mainstream. So without further ado: here’s WeTheUrban Magazine’s top Youtube Artists to Watch Out for (July/August ‘11 Edition)!

wetheurban 120

Sean rumsey Username: s e a n r u m s e y Real Name: Sean Rumsey Location: London, UK

My first time listening to him, was a true experience. I saw that he did a cover of “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman and from the looks of the video thumbnail, I didn’t think too much of it. But when I heard his voice, I literally fell out of my chair in shock! Why Sean Rumsey hasn’t scored a record deal yet is beyond me. From covers of artists like Rihanna to Maroon 5, Rumsey can sing it all. His voice reminds me of a mix between melting milk chocolate and a warm summer breeze. Plus...who doesn’t love British accents? 121 wetheurban

erin paula Username: erinpaulaa Real Name: Erin Paula Location: Bay Area, California

wetheurban 122

Most notably known as the second half of popular Youtube cover duo Rin on the Rox, Erin Paula has now set out on her own to pursue her own solo career. Dental assistant by day and power vocalist by night. Already booking shows in places like London, it won’t be long until this soul singer breaks a major record deal. Keep your eyes pealed! And can we take a second to talk about that acoustic “What’s My Name” cover? Damn, girl!

username: guitarjosie Real Name: Josephine Nelson Location: Alexandria, Minnesota

josephine nelson

She may be only 11, but Josie Nelson has the vocals of a 20 year old that may closely rival the voices of artists like Colbie Caillat and Christina Perri. A true prodigy in every sense of the word! Aside from covering songs, she writes a good deal of her own. And they’re actually all amazing. I’m talking music that could easily be mainstream right now with the right help! I can’t wait to see how her career in music evolves!

J ay m e D e e

username: jaymedee333 Location: Real Name: Jayme Dee Los Angeles, California

Listening to Ms. Jayme Dee is like sipping a mojito on a perfectly sunny day at the beach in the Bahama’s. Such a breath of fresh air! But don’t let her ‘girl next door’ look fool you; that voice of hers is no joke! The uniqueness of her tone and the fact that she plays the music to all of her covers make her that much better. 2.5 million views in, this California girl has a drive like no other. Not to mention her single Whiplash Love- link the words ‘whiplash love’ with this link) is pure gold!

wetheurban 124

Straight out of Hickory, North Carolina, Drew Chambers has a voice so much bigger than the town he lives in. Over the past year, Chambers has been posting covers from top power-balled artists such as Adele, Beyonce, Bruno Mars, and Jessie J. After almost 2 million views, Chambers is now currently working in the studio on his first full length album produced by Sam Harmonix due later this fall on itunes and amazon! Look out for this boy! This isn’t the last you’ve seen of him.

Fresh. Funky. Glam. Hip-Pop. Just a few words that sum up the greatness that is Pearl Future. Her smile may be sweet, but make no mistake. From working with Nicki Minaj to Baby Bash, this chica is slowly making her waves in the music industry one base drop at a time. This rising star that will surely make her presence felt this summer with her promotional album dropping sometime in the coming weeks.

WTU: So how did you come up with the stage name Pearl Future? Pearl was my great grandmother’s name. She was a bad ass. As for the “future” part, I just believe in not looking back, having no regrets. Make what you’re doing NOW count because it creates your future. Stay focused. That’s my attitude in life. Your attitude can change the world, so you better make it good! WTU: What is your nationality? American, born and raised. WTU: What part of Cali are you from? Northern Cali. I was born in Las Vegas but grew up in Sacramento and moved to San Francisco when I was 17. I dropped out of high school in Sac because my father died and since I didn’t have anywhere to live I figured I might as well move to the City. I found a place to live in a crazy communal artist loft for almost free, and got a job in a recording studio. I could be around music and record my own songs easily. It was perfect for me. WTU: Can you tell us a little bit about your current up and coming music project(s) right now? I have a slappin promotional album coming out in a few weeks which will have a bunch of wild jams from the last several months. Lately I’ve been experimenting, traveling, writing and recording lots of different material, co-writing with all kinds of amazing musicians and really defining my sound. I will be following the promo release with an official album and single later in the year. WTU: How would you describe your sound? Supercalifuturistichyphyglamidocious. I usually set out to make pop, but it comes out sounding like that. WTU: Who are some of your musical influences? Elvis, Prince, Mariah Carey, Bjork, Dr. Dre, Diane Warren. And many, many others that are similarly hot.

WTU: Have your friends/family always supported your decision to be an artist? No, never. But you can’t blame family & friends for not understanding, it’s not like there’s guaranteed job security in being an artist. When I started making money their attitudes changed. There are a lot of things you can do as a musician, you just have to be proactive. You have to take major risks. You can’t wait for approval and hand-holding, that’s for sure. Anyway, I’m doing it forever, so now what bitches?! WTU: What would you say is the single most important trait to have in order to make it in this industry? Optimism. It’s so important and it will get you through everything. In the music business there’s always ups and downs and you’re gonna need it. WTU: How was it working with Nicki Minaj? Are you surprised by all of her success? Nicki is great. I wrote a song called “Lookin’ At Me” and wanted another female to collab on it. A friend, who is a Warner rep, told me about Nicki. This was before she was signed and we were both talking to Warner about business. I was feelin’ her a lot and sent her the song. She loved it and recorded her frickin dope verse on it. I love it, the song turned out super hot, so it was really fun. I’m not surprised by her success, she is the best rapper in the world. WTU: What’s in store for the future of Pearl Future? I launched an independent label with other musicians recently and we are growing it. It’s a jump off point for new, developing projects and songwriting. The project has been embraced by some great community leaders and they help make it possible to award scholarships to students as part of our grassroots effort, and we do that twice a year. It gets the word out about our label but it also gives back something worthwhile to the students, who are all so ambitious and positive! There are some serious go-getters out there and I’m all about that. Also this summer I am mentoring a couple of aspiring artists, one singer and one producer, and building my personal, 100% solar powered luxury recording studio. It’s gonna be so dope. After I put out the album, I will tour again so I’m working hard in the studio. And I’ll have some hot collabs coming up too. Now, the last time I said that it was Nicki Minaj, so stay tuned! 127 wetheurban

Y cht More Than Just Music words

Willie Greene

J

ona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans make up YACHT, the band. But YACHT is something bigger that just an electropop-duo. It’s a band, business, and belief system that encompasses a large spectrum of ideas. When the two discuss this ideology of YACHT, they speak briskly; it’s clear that they really do believe in everything they stand for. There are no gimmicks here – only conviction. The pair of musicians behind YACHT aren’t messing around when it comes to these things. In their latest studio album, Shangri-La, the fantastic duo explore the concept of utopia. It’s true enigmatic dance-pop with meaning! You can pick up the 10 track hit, Shangri-La, on iTunes now!

WTU: What (or who) is YACHT? YACHT is a band, business, and belief system from Portland, Oregon and Marfa, Texas. WTU: What was Claire doing before she joined YACHT in 2008? Claire was, and continues to be, a writer. In particular, she is a science journalist, writing about the intersections of art, science, and culture for various print and online outlets; she considers herself to be an intermediary in the tradition of Carl Sagan and Anne Carson. She also makes films and online projects to further disseminate the ideas that interest her. http://scienceblogs.com/universe/ WTU: The triangle has been one of your main symbols way before this triangular “hipster” trend started. What does the triangle actually symbolize to you and what are your views on its taking off so heavily into the “hipster” culture? The triangle’s integration into so-called “hipster” culture is simply the most recent manifestation of the triangle’s importance in human culture. Triangles are an integral symbol in essentially every human spiritual tradition: the Holy Trinity of Christianity is one obvious example, but it can also be seen as the Hindu “seed of manifestation,” in the iconography of the ancient Maya, as the “shining Delta” of the Masonic tradition, and as a symbol of nearly-occult importance in the mystical mathematics of Pythagoras. Further, triangles have a fundamental presence in architecture, engineering, wetheurban 138

mathematics, and design. We find that what some call “hipster” culture is really just people who are interested in allying themselves to something more profound than what’s offered by mainstream media -- evidently the spiritual and intellectual power of the triangle, as a symbol, appeals to that need. WTU: Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming album Shangri-La? Shangri-La is the most authentic document of what YACHT believes and believes is beautiful right now, in 2011. WTU: How was the process of creating this album? Was it any different than making your previous work? Shangri-La was recorded in what we call the Western American Utopian Triangle: Portland, Oregon, Marfa, Texas, and Los Angeles, California, three places of grave spiritual importance to us. We undertook the recording of this album with a small seed, which was to make music loosely structured around the idea of Utopia. WTU: What are your views on the current state of pop culture? Pop culture from all eras, including our own, fascinates us. It’s the collective unconscious of the world. WTU: How involved are you in creating each piece of the YACHT brand? We literally do everything ourselves. We design our

own t-shirts, code our own website, write, record, and engineer our own albums, design our own stage show, and so forth. Every single thing you see in the world that has our name on it was designed from the ground up by Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, or in close collaboration with someone we respect: for us, it’s a matter of controlling the dissemination of our ideas, and providing consistency for the larger membership. We never want to release anything we believe is subpar, and we never want to alienate our fanbase with something authored by a stranger. WTU: Are there any videos in the works for Shangri La already? We just released an eight-minute double video for Utopia and Dystopia (The Earth is on Fire), which were directed by a great hero of ours, Rene Daalder. We worked closely with Rene on composing this sciencefiction epic, which references 60s radical architec-

ture, Buckminster Fuller, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and countless other bits and pieces of intellectual culture, while being entirely its own. http://vimeo.com/25246548 WTU: Do you enjoy touring? How was it opening for the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s? We are “always on tour,” as we say. It’s the very heart of what YACHT is about: direct communication, direct contact, with people. We consider YACHT shows to be pirate Utopias, Temporary Autonomous Zones of ontological anarchy that we share with the people who attend them. We want very much to touch people, physically if possible. Opening for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs remains a career highlight. WTU: What would be the creme da le a crema for YACHT? Continuing to have interesting conversations with people around the world and further developing the YACHT philosophy until we die.

Chatting With Ms. Doolittle Female pop acts are dominating the charts right now, from Lady Gaga’s glamorous artistic stage shows and Beyonce’s record breaking Grammy wins, to Katy Perry’s catchy summer chart toppers – It’s only fair to say that in terms of ‘power’, girl power is in full swing.

One rising star to look out for this year is Brit newcomer Eliza Doolittle, who’s making big waves in the UK. The 22-year-old singer/song writer released her debut self titled album last July, which peaked at #3 in the Official UK album charts and is currently sitting pretty at #5 nearly two months later. Doolittle is currently in America trying to make waves and break the US market (which happens to be the toughest one in the world). I like to describe her sound as “unique-past/present”. It all makes sense once you hear her open her mouth! wetheurban 142

wetheurban 144

hello eliza! how was 2011 been treating you so far?

It’s been amazing thanks! Been touring lots and spreading the Doolittle love!

Can you give us a little background about where you grew up and life before the fame?

Well I grew up in Camden Town, London. I still live there actually. I have 8 brothers and sisters, so I always had someone to muck about with when I was little.

Do you feel “famous”?

Not really. I can still walk down the street in Camden and I guess I just keep my head down. I’m quite unobservant to my surroundings at times so if anyone recognises me, sometimes I don’t even see.

Your sound could fit into so many genre’s! how would you describe it?

I always find it difficult. Yes, lots of people say different things. Which I like! I don’t think it falls into 1 category. I think it’s just me!

Do you have any rituals when songwriting? Describe that process.

I don’t really have rituals. I like to experiment and work in different ways to see what music and what sounds come out. I am definitely melody drawn though and lyrics are closely following and then the rest of the music is in my head and can be great to teleport into a computer cos it doesn’t always turn out how I hear it in my head. Most of the time for the best! Cause then you take the vision somewhere beyond!

Can you describe that feeling of finishing a song you’ve wrote?

It’s one of my favourite feelings ever. It’s excitement for the piece of music you’ve made and the fact that anyone could hear it and spread it to as many ears as they like. Love to release it into the wild!

how did the name “Doolittle” come about?

It was a nickname I had at school by my drama teacher and my Mum used to call me that too. Eliza is my name and Doolittle just came with it.

have you been enjoying the Us response from your latest album?

Yes its been great! I know there are so many people in America who haven’t heard it yet so I still got to work hard to get it out to more states and hopefully at some point, I’ll get to doo the all american road trip tour i’ve always wanted to doo!

Your cover of “Forget You” by Cee-lo is absolutely amazing! if you could collaborate with anyone on a song right now, who would it be? Right now it would be Andre 3000 or The Neptunes or Frank Ocean or The Weeknd...I also am in love with Stevie Wonder so would probably give my left arm for that collab!

any other musicians or bands you’re loving at the moment?

Yeah! Jamie Woon, Hall of Mirrors, Odd Future, and Kanye West.

lastly, what’s a fashion don’t for you?

Flares are a nono for me. Same as lame floaty dresses. And anything with studs [laughs] I could probably name things all day. I’m quite picky with what I don’t like but open to what I doo like! 145 wetheurban

Warhol &

the Diva words

wetheurban 196

Krystal Miranda

P

op culture has sure churned out the most powerful and boldest of women since it gave birth to what we know as the ‘diva’—our

modern prima donna, per say. From names such as Marilyn Monroe to Beyoncé to Gaga, it’s quite easy to get a first-hand look at what it takes to become and embody this kind of woman. But… could this sense of female empowerment apply to a man as well? It seems as though Andy Warhol thought so. Kate Farrell, Curator of Special Exhibitions at The Lowry in England, rediscovered some of the Pop Art icon’s more notable works, as well as some rarely viewed shots of Warhol himself. Entitled “Warhol and the Diva”, this exhibition will feature widely known silkscreen shots of icons like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, along with some of Jane Fonda and others that have yet to reach the public eye. The most exciting part of this whole exhibition? The photos of Warhol in drag taken by his friend, Christopher Makos, which have never before been shown in the UK and rarely seen in any other parts of the world.

The idea started out when Kate and other members at The Lowry began planning a celebration of ‘the diva in performance’. After much brainstorming, they were quickly drawn to the icons that Warhol admired and captured in his unmistakable signature way. Kate Farrell explained: “Warhol admired and adored the subjects he depicted in his work, immersing himself in their lifestyle and living and breathing the glamour of their existence which offers an incredible body of material for the exhibition. I hope our visitors will be as excited by this fascinating collection of his works as we are to show it off”. Thanks to the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, who have loaned the pieces, Ms. Farrell is excited to have the original portraits on display for those who want to get a first-hand look at Warhol’s work. The exhibition will run starting June 25th until September 25th at the Lowry in Salford Quays, England, and will also feature footage of Warhol making his transformation into his more fabulous ‘dive’ alter ego. Looks like those fifteen minutes of fame he once predicted for everyone are lasting a tad bit longer for him! 197 wetheurban

In five separate rooms, the artists were given the task of transforming the space with new, sitespecific installations with no other limitations. One outstanding artist, Valentin Ruhry, created a piece as simple as your childhood Lite Brite, but with commentary on the history of technology. Ruhry’s untitled project (referred to as “Hello World”) is composed entirely of 5000 rocker switches, each with an internal light. Switching causes each individual light to turn on or off. Written in lights across the board are the words “Hello World.”

The message refers to the Hello World computer program, one of the earliest and simplest programs, which works by producing the phrase on a display device. This binary homage to the onset of modern technology creates a harsh comparison between the current state of technology and it’s obsolete roots. “Hello World” speaks to an increasing niche of artists working at the crossroads of art and technology. Fünf Räume will be on display daily from 10am to 6pm at the ACFNY gallery through September 5 199 wetheurban

cover art by

John-Paul Thurlow words Willie Greene

It’s amazing the things you can do with just a simple pencil and sketchpad. “Covers” is a project by Art Director turned Illustrator, John-Paul Thurlow. Fascinated by the perfection of glamour magazines covers he decided to redraw his favorite ones and this is how these awesome original portraits were born. John Paul explains his project: “This is an attempt to recreate cover art for every great magazine and record my own. And with each cover I take a perfect mass-produced object and turn it into a fucked up one-off, full of my thoughts and feelings. Covers is an homage to the creative men and women who produce such disposable perfection.” http://www.johnpaulthurlow.blogspot.com

surrealism. One painting was sold at twenty-four thousand dollars to a Hong Kong collector, and the remainder of her artwork is priced at no less than four thousand. So, many would wonder, how long has this artist been involved in the industry? Where did she study, and what’s her inspiration? However, these questions might be a bit difficult to answer…after all, she is only four years old. Aelita Andre is a Melbourne-based artist who created her first piece at just 20 months old— and we’re not talking just finger-paints here. Her parents, who are artists themselves, were elated when Aelita took an interest to the canvas, and gave her the freedom to paint when and how she decided. After making the decision to not mention her age, Aelita’s parents brought her works to a local gallery, where curators were open to displaying them without realizing who exactly the creator was. Here, Aelita held her first exhibition while still in

most other children her age, and maintains a consistency throughout her paintings. Most are made up of various colors she splatters across the canvas, while sometimes incorporating toys, charms, and whatever else she desires. Using everything from her feet to pouring the whole bottle of paint out, Aelita remains concentrated until she decides when her project is complete. Art critics are continually eager to see what she comes up with next, and viewers delight at the idea that they are having a personal look into the mind of a child prodigy. And the best part of it all? Aelita remains blissfully unaware as to why exactly she has taken the international art community by storm.

diapers, and still over half her paintings were sold. Fast forward to now, and four-year old Aelita already has her first solo exhibition, entitled “A Prodigy of Color”, under her belt. Down at the Agora Gallery in Manhattan, New York, Aelita had paintings on display that were tagged at up to ten thousand dollars. Yet to this day, various skeptics can’t help but wonder if this is truly the work of a toddler, and if so, if it should really be viewed with artistic merit at all. Aelita happily casts all these doubts aside as she paints

nick van woert

Got an unused wastebasket sitting in your office? I bet you Nick Van Woert could work wonders with it! The mixed media and sculpture artist uses everything from styrofoam to battered human sculptures to create his pieces, with his past strongly influencing him to constantly change the elements that make up his work. Born and raised in Reno, Nevada, a city with one museum and one major gallery, Nick Van Woert’s

evolved

from

doodles, drawings, and models, then moved, in architecture school, towards sculpture. He attended Parsons for his MFA and now makes works that take on the history of art, design, and sculpture. Van Woert can easily be classified as one of the best sculpture artists of New York this decade.
