Director’s Message The Year in REVIEW Exceptional Artistry Research and Education Outreach and Engagement Wexner Center Programs 2017–2018 Thanks to You—Our Donors Wexner Center Staff and Volunteers
Director’s Message
Taking the measure of a year in the life of the Wexner Center is always something of a challenge, but the realization that this will be my final such dispatch as director summons an especially reflective mood. How to do justice to a single season in the context of a quarter century over which the Wex has become a singular cultural force—on the campus of The Ohio State University, throughout the Columbus community, across the country, and internationally. As I think back on so many extraordinary occasions— in our galleries, on stage, on screen, or everywhere at once—it’s the resolute, mission-driven porosity of our program across artistic and intellectual pursuits that’s been the vital quotient. When both celebrated and emerging artists regularly intersect with renowned thinkers and scholars, culture-shaping provocateurs, eager students, an avid public, and one another, there’s bound to be creative combustion. Encouraging, accommodating, and sometimes even conjuring such encounters and experiences thrives at the heart of what we do.
Over the past year alone, the Wex cocommissioned and presented the premiere of a riveting, boundary-crossing collaboration between legendary string ensemble Kronos Quartet and “live documentary” producer Sam Green. We welcomed Charles Burnett, one of the distinctive voices in American independent cinema, to present the 40thanniversary screening of his still-powerful drama Killer of Sheep. Famed Argentinian director Lucrecia Martel chose the Wex as one of just several stops on her US tour to present her latest feature film, Zama. Our fall 2017 exhibition Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life concluded a calendar year of all women artists in our galleries. That deliberate gender-based focus was likewise trained on our selection of illustrious speakers throughout the season, including such women artists, art historians, and literary figures as Carrie Mae Weems, Rita Dove, Hito Steyerl, Susan Meiselas, Margaret Koerner, Suzanne Bocanegra, Lili Taylor, Julia Reichert, Elisabeth Subrin, Rebecca Morris, Laura Owens, and Ruth Root, to name just a few.
The Wexner Center has always recognized its dual mandate to bring the most compelling artists from throughout the world to Columbus and to the university, even while advancing those local and regional artists whose work deserves wider visibility on the world stage. This year was no exception as nationally acclaimed, Columbus-based choreographer Bebe Miller premiered In a Rhythm, the culmination of a Wex Artist Residency Award in which she partnered with fellow choreographer Susan Rethorst to create a new piece inspired by noted writers Toni Morrison, Gertrude Stein, and David Foster Wallace. We were equally proud to present a performance by Counterfeit Madison, the musical moniker for versatile artist and Columbus resident Sharon Udoh. Likewise, area filmmaker Chris Bournea introduced his new documentary Lady Wrestler, telling the untold stories of African
American women in Columbus who faced systemic challenges to pursue careers in the world of wrestling through the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. And we were gratified to join forces with venerable Columbus dance company BalletMet and Ohio State’s Department of Dance in celebration of BalletMet’s 40th anniversary with a program featuring work by Wexner Prize recipients Merce Cunningham and William Forsythe, as well as Ohad Naharin of Batsheva Dance Company. The Wexner Center is not alone among cultural institutions nationally and beyond in recognizing the power of art to spark crucial conversations that advance awareness and activism across multiple sectors. But we were certainly among the early advocates. Our annual Director’s Dialogue on Art and Social Change was inaugurated in 2006 and over the years has addressed such persistent issues as gender bias, racial discrimination, climate change,
health-care inequality, police brutality, and mass incarceration. This year’s program took as its focus Pens to Pictures: Empowering Incarcerated Women from Script to Screen, a unique project undertaken by filmmaker and then Wright State Professor Chinonye Chukwu to work with a group of women incarcerated at the Dayton Correctional Institution. What began as a short-story writing course soon evolved to cover scriptwriting and ultimately led to the production of short films that were postproduced in the Wexner Center’s Film/Video Studio. Given the complexity of the project and the tangle of issues surrounding incarceration, we decided to expand this year’s Director’s Dialogue into a three-part program that unfolded over the course of an afternoon and evening. First, four of the five Pens to Pictures filmmakers appeared with Chukwu at the Wex to screen and discuss their works (with the fifth present via video feed). Next, we orchestrated Take Action: Networking and Resources Session, in which over a dozen nonprofit and advocacy organizations joined us to share their work on behalf of women, whether prior to, during, or emerging from incarceration. And finally we convened a panel of academics and professionals to address the dramatically increasing rate of women being imprisoned in this country. On the pages that follow you will find images portraying these and other highlights of the past season—but a partial summation of so many remarkable moments across the year. As I write my final annual report introduction for the Wex, I remain every bit as passionate about the underlying vision and values of this extraordinary institution as when I arrived 25 years ago. I couldn’t then have imagined that the singular ethos of this place would captivate, propel, and replenish me for so long. Still today, I am moved by the powerful and capacious potential of the center’s founding mandate: that an art center situated at the threshold of a major research university could and should be a generative and inspiring habitat where the arts not only illuminate and reflect the complexities of contemporary life, but also encourage cross-cultural connections and fuel social change. I remain convinced that by fostering creative
inquiry, new and experimental arts practices, and candid but civil discourse among diverse audiences, arts institutions play an absolutely essential role in democratic society by connecting artists and audiences through provocative and inspiring productions, programs, and personal experiences. It’s been an uncommon privilege to coax and guide this unique institution from what many considered an unlikely experiment in the heartland into what is now among the foremost platforms for contemporary art anywhere. And I consider it a fair claim that, over nearly three decades, the Wex has been a vital cultural and educational resource for the university and the city, helping to spark the evolution of Columbus as a more open, progressive, and sophisticated place to live, work, and play. But it’s never been a solo journey. I’ll be forever grateful for the wise counsel, generosity, and encouragement of my truly remarkable trustees—especially the board’s founding benefactors Leslie and Abigail Wexner. I’ve been blessed by the partnership and expertise of a phenomenally talented staff, a legion of dedicated volunteers, and the unwavering commitment of university leaders and close academic cohorts. And I will long treasure the many incredible relationships forged with artists, cultural figures, patrons, and advocates worldwide. Thank you with all my heart for a truly remarkable quarter century!
Sherri Geldin
JULY 2018
Exceptional Artistry
The Wexner Center is the region’s leading destination for contemporary art and a conduit for bringing world-class visual art, film, dance, theater, and music to Columbus.
“One of the most celebrated, influential and enigmatic artists of the 21st century.” —COLUMBUS DISPATCH ON CINDY SHERMAN
“A deeply enthralling exhibition ... delves into that creative moment—one of the most important cultural transfer points in American history.” —PL AIN DEALER ON LEAP BEFORE YOU LOOK
Patrons filled the galleries for the opening of our fall exhibition Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life, a comprehensive, career-spanning survey of the acclaimed artist that made its only stop outside of Los Angeles at the Wex. Exhibition curator Philipp Kaiser joined Wex Curator at Large Bill Horrigan onstage (middle left, seated right to left) for an engaging discussion on the impact and significance of Sherman’s work. Our series of Super Sunday events invite all members of the community to experience our exhibitions free of cost. Above, visitors take in one of Sherman’s many works in which she presents herself as generic B-movie and art-house stars—here transformed into a wallsized visual landscape for our presentation.
“A joyous exhibition.... Just about every piece in the show contains a stunning detail, surprise, or secret told.” —WALL STREET JOURNAL ON ALL OF EVERY THING
American fashion icon Todd Oldham conversed with patrons (opposite, top left) at the opening for All of Everything: Todd Oldham Fashion. Making its only Midwest stop at the Wex, the first major museum retrospective of Oldham’s work featured more than 70 of the designer’s meticulously crafted and extravagantly embellished fashions from the 1990s. Organized by the Rhode Island School of Design’s RISD Museum, the presentation featured RISD Ensemble (2015/16, opposite, top right), which Oldham created in collaboration with students there—his first new couture dress in years.
An immersive, thought-provoking installation by acclaimed South African artist William Kentridge, The Refusal of Time (above) evolved out of discussions with Harvard professor Peter Galison. Combining projections of Kentridge’s evocative, hand-drawn animations and liveaction sequences with sculpture and music, the work examined revolutions in our conception of time that emerged in the early 20th century. Austrian artist Anita Witek made her Wex debut with Clip (right), a monumental, site-specific photomontage installation in our lower lobby, the first she has realized in the United States.
“Viewers can study the concepts of these works in depth … or simply glide through the galleries and appreciate the visual splendor.” —COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Vibrant works from a multigenerational group of 16 artists filled our galleries with Inherent Structure (opposite and above), curated by Wexner Center Senior Curator of Exhibitions Michael Goodson. The more than 60 captivating works on view revealed the deliberate structures embedded in abstraction, illustrating how contemporary practices emerge not just from formal conventions exclusive to painting, but also from the artists’ particular material, psychological, and sociopolitical concerns. Several works in the exhibition also tested assumptions about what constitutes a painting,
draping canvases without frames or wrapping fabric around Plexiglas supports. The well-attended exhibition preview featured an engaging conversation with artists Ruth Root, Laura Owens, and Rebecca Morris (above, seated left to right) that was moderated by George Rush, associate professor in Ohio State’s Department of Art. Several other Inherent Structure artists were also in attendance, including Zachary Armstrong (at left, center, standing in front of his installation Noah), Ohio State alum Richard Aldrich, Arturo Herrera, Carrie Moyer, Sam Moyer, and Angel Otero.
“Delivered its own kind of beauty: subtle, enthralling, and ever so sensually satisfying.” —DANCE MAGAZINE ON BEBE MILLER COMPANY
Acclaimed choreographer and Ohio State professor emerita Bebe Miller (above) wowed dance fans with the world premiere of In a Rhythm (top, left), developed with the support of a Wexner Center Artist Residency Award. Inspired by writers such as Gertrude Stein and conversations with fellow choreographer Susan Rethorst, the project explored the syntax of movement and how we absorb its meaning. Leading European company Rosas returned with A Love Supreme (top, right), a dance set to John Coltrane’s ode to divine love by choreographers Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Salva Sanchis. The Wex presented Rule of Three, its second US premiere of new work by inventive Flemish choreographer Jan Martens. Parallel Connections (right), presented in association with BalletMet and Ohio State’s Department of Dance, celebrated Columbus’s vibrant dance community with a spectrum of stunning, contemporary works, including pieces by Wexner Prize winners William Forsythe and Merce Cunningham.
“For decades, The Wex has been our cultural mentor, curating some of the finest art, music and film that the world has to offer.” —614 MAGAZINE
Counterfeit Madison, the musical manifestation of versatile artist and Columbus resident Sharon Udoh (below), belted out tunes at the release party for her second full-length album, Opposable Thumbs. Singer, songwriter, bandleader, producer, and electrifying bassist Meshell Ndegeocello (top) made her spectacular Wex debut this season to a sold-out crowd. Named Best

Versatile actress Lili Taylor (top, left) starred in Farmhouse/ Whorehouse, the third in a series of hybrid performance-lectures by visual artist Suzanne Bocanegra, and also joined us for an evening featuring two of her 1990s films. A veteran of New York’s experimental theater scene, Andrew Schneider (top, right) performed his high-tech, Obie
Award–winning solo theater work YOUARENOWHERE. Innovative British theater ensemble Improbable (bottom) returned with Opening Skinner’s Box—a guided tour of 10 famous 20th-century psychological experiments that was supported by the group’s third Wexner Center Artist Residency Award.
The “film/performance combination called A Thousand Thoughts … [is] as magical an amalgamation as anything you can imagine.”—KEVIN TURAN, L A TIMES The Wexner Center was proud to present the world premiere of A Thousand Thoughts: A Live Documentary by Sam Green and Kronos Quartet, commissioned through our Artist Residency Award program. Screened with Green narrating onstage as Kronos plays beside him (cover), the thrilling project charts the legendary string quartet’s 45year history. Before the event, these collaborators convened for a champagne toast with a special mix of donors and friends that included Ohio State faculty Ann Hamilton (talking with Kronos’ Hank Dutt, middle left)
and Richard Fletcher (with Sam Green, middle right). Kronos’ David Harrington (top) played his violin for a curious student during a free performance of the piece for area high school students. A Thousand Thoughts was one of several works this season that mixed music and cinema with audience-pleasing results. Noted director Jim Jarmusch returned to the Wex with bandmate Carter Logan as the post-rock duo SQÜRL (bottom right), performing live scores for surreal silent films by artist Man Ray.
“I can think of no other program that matches the Wexner Center’s ability to not only show work, but to develop it and actually produce it.”—BARBARA KRUGER
This year the Wex debuted Unorthodocs., a new festival celebrating the inspiring, illuminating, and intriguing possibilities of nonfiction filmmaking. A gift.” —@ANGEL AMELECAGALLERY VIA INSTAGRAM The Wex was thrilled to welcome a series of visionary artists and authors as featured speakers this year: Carrie Mae Weems (above) whose 35-year practice incorporates photography, film, video, performance, text, and textiles to investigate cultural identity, politics, and the social consequences of power; Pulitzer Prize–winning author Rita Dove (at right, seated) who shared the story behind her theatrical masterpiece The Darker Face of the Earth before a staged campus reading in March; photographer Susan Meiselas (bottom inset), widely acclaimed for her ethical approach to documenting social and political turmoil and widely exhibited at venues like the Whitney Museum of American Art; and multidisciplinary conceptual artist Adam Pendleton (far right, standing), who has quickly established himself as one of today’s foremost emerging artists.
The Wexner Center actively supports the creation of new work across disciplines through artist residencies, develops illuminating public programs, and offers a forum for diverse audiences to engage with the art and ideas of our time.
“If Columbus isn’t on every art lover’s list, it should be. The Wexner Center for the Arts has one of the most dynamic contemporary programs in the country.”—WASHINGTON POST
Continuing a season packed with leading figures in the contemporary art world, influential scholar, author, and curator Douglas Crimp (top, at podium) delivered this year’s Lambert Family Lecture, discussing nine artists—including Cindy Sherman—who explore femininity as a construct. Art historian and curator Margaret K. Koerner (middle, left) spoke about William Kentridge’s installation The Refusal of Time and its connections to other works in the artist’s fascinating multimedia practice. Known for her astute explorations of contemporary capitalism—and ranked at the top of ArtReview’s 2017 Power 100 list—Berlinbased artist, filmmaker, and writer Hito Steyerl (middle, right) addressed a packed Film/Video Theater. The Wex recently expanded its internship program to offer professional development opportunities as well as compensation via academic credit or wages; participants in its first class (lower right) jumped for joy.

“Paul Hill … seemed to love working with my imagery, my concerns, my complexities. What could make a moving image maker happier? Not much!” —BARBARA HAMMER
Our education programs consistently offer Columbus youth meaningful opportunities to explore their lives and think critically about the world through the lens of art. Students in grades 8–12 attend half-day WorldView seminars (left, middle left and right) where artists whose work engages cultural, political, social, and economic themes offer a broad context for critical and creative thinking and help students gain global literacy. The Expanded Classroom program (bottom left and right) offers younger students the chance to tour an exhibition or watch a film at the Wexner Center, then work directly with an artist to expand their knowledge of a specific art form.
“By far the best educational experience I have ever observed.” —PRINCIPAL ANDY JADOS, BIG WALNUT HIGH SCHOOL, ON PAGES
“Pages is an interactive, engaging, creative, exploratory experience.” —PAGES STUDENT
Our Pages program for high school students supports the development of participants’ writing skills through the exploration of contemporary art, film, music, dance, and theater. Led by Wex educator Dionne Custer Edwards (bottom, in red) Pages pairs artists and Wex educators with teachers from across central Ohio in the planning of writingbased, experiential learning opportunities, which this
year included Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life; A Thousand Thoughts: A Live Documentary by Sam Green and Kronos Quartet; and Raoul Peck’s documentary I Am Not Your Negro. The yearlong program culminates with the publication of the Pages anthology—a beautiful compilation of student writing and visual art—and an Open Mic event (left) where students read their own work before an audience of family and friends.
Outreach and Engagement
More than ever the Wex serves as a cultural and civic hub, welcoming all audiences and communities with programs that provoke discussion, encourage debate, and spur engagement with today’s pressing issues.
This year’s Director’s Dialogue on Art and Social Change centered on the pioneering program Pens to Pictures: Empowering Incarcerated Women from Script to Screen. The day’s events included an afternoon conversation and screening with program participants, who learned the craft of screenwriting and developed their scripts into short films. Above, Vivian Covington, a warden’s assistant at Dayton Correctional Institution, stands with directors Kamisha Thomas, Aimee Wissman, Beverly Fears, Jamie Ochs, and the program’s founder, Chinonye Chukwu (left to right).
