President
Hello Neighbors,
Happy 4th of July – 4th of July is one of the best holidays here at Wexford. Cart parade, activities, burgers and hot dogs plus a lot more on the buffet, programs and activities for all ages make Wexford a fun spot to enjoy the 4th. Take advantage of the opportunities, you and your family and friends will be glad you did. Welcome New Members — The results of a member survey back in the spring revealed that about 20% of owners have been here a year or less and 45% of owners have been here less than 5 years. It’s important to welcome our new, and relatively new, members to Wexford by including them in our programs and introducing them to owners with similar interests. We have an organized new member orientation process that helps get that started, including a dinner with other new members, management and board representatives, but please take the opportunity to ask a new member to dinner, to play golf or tennis or whatever your hobby happens to be. You will make a new member feel they made the right choice in choosing Wexford and just may find a new friend. Hurricane Season — We’re about a month into hurricane season and, fingers crossed, wishing us all luck that we do not get have a severe weather event this season. But as we learned recently with Hurricane Matthew, the threat is real and can come at any time as we learned with Hurricane Irma the following year, thankfully much less severe than Matthew. Some lessons from those events were: • Be ready ahead of time: Hurricanes are unpredictable and can change paths quickly. Have a plan on your evacuation destination, what you will take with you and what needs to be taken care of at your home here on short notice.
• Evacuate, don’t stay: A few brave souls stayed in place here during Matthew and all those I talked with later said they would not do that again, especially when the tidal surge came over the sea wall. Property damage can be rebuilt, people – not as easy. Also keep in mind that local police and emergency health personnel generally evacuate so you will really be alone in case of emergency which jeopardizes you and your family. • Make sure your property insurance is up to date: Some folks were disappointed when they went to make claims for damage after Matthew. Coverages, damage limits and deductibles should all be checked to see if David Jackson they are appropriate for the risk you wish to take. President Town Hall Meeting — One thing that came out of the owner survey taken last year was that owners wanted more communication with management and the board. We’ve tried to take that seriously with the summaries of the board meetings that are sent out via email the week following the meetings and by having a town hall meeting last fall at the Sonesta, due to social distancing requirements at the time. To continue to have active dialog with members, answer your questions and hear your concerns, we are tentatively scheduling a meeting for late July so watch for that announcement. As with the meeting last year, in person and Zoom participation with both be available. Finally... Be Safe — There are always lots of kids and grandkids around in the summer at Wexford, it’s part of the fun. Just take note when you’re driving or backing out of your driveway that there may be a wee one on a small bike on one of the trails or sidewalk that’s a little hard to see, especially when you’re not used to someone being there. And for the same reason, please try to drive just a little slower and more cautious. And for parents and grandparents, please follow our guidelines with regard to bike, scooter and golf cart usage for your special young family members. We want everyone to be safe and come back next year.
All the best, David
