Fire-protection technology

Fire-protection technology. For walls and ceilings.

Experience shows that a fire can occur anywhere. Even strict fire regulations provide no guarantee against fire. The greatest risk is not caused by the building itself, but by technical and electrical equipment. This places great demands on planners and installers of building technology. More than 90% of fire deaths and approximately 70% of property damage are not the direct result of the fire but of the hazardous and toxic smoke produced by the fire. So, in addition to avoiding and combating fire, the main aim is to prevent the formation and dispersion of smoke gas.

KAISER fire-protection systems offer you reliable solutions for installations in fire protection ceilings and walls. These solutions also ensure the required fire-protection classes if a fire starts. Intelligent products for active and preventative fire-protection produced in halogen-free and fire-resistant materials, which correspond to the current statutory and technical requirements. Products for walls and ceilings in buildings and for shipbuilding walls. Products whose reliability can save lives and prevent catastrophes.

Fire-protection technology Statutory principles DIN 4102 Statutory principles

The most important tasks of preventative fire protection are the saving of human life and minimising of property damage. To do this, above all it is necessary to guarantee the functional integrity of the building technology, the availability of the escape routes, and access by the emergency services.

The building regulations (BauO) or state building regulations (LBO) are an essential part of the public building law. The jurisdiction for building law lies with the federal states of Germany. The BauO specifies the conditions which all construction projects must observe. The requirements apply to the land and to any buildings erected on it. The requirements include:

(2) Whoever, in engaging in a profession or trade, violates generally accepted engineering standards in the planning, management or execution of a project to install technical fixtures in a structure or to modify installed fixtures of this nature, and thereby endangers the life or limb of another human being, shall be similarly punished.

DIN 4102. Building material classes. Fire resistance. Walls. Ceilings.

A1 n on-combustible materials without organic elements

B1 c ombustible materials without organic elements

A2 non-combustible materials with organic elements

B2 c ombustible materials normally inflammable

The fire behaviour of building materials is influenced by the type, design, surface, dimensions, material combinations and processing technology. Building materials are grouped into classes according to their fire behaviour: A non-combustible building materials B combustible building materials The fire-resistance period is the minimum time in minutes which a building component exposed to fire must not exceed an average rise in temperature of 140 K (max. 180 K at individual sites) on the side not exposed to the fire. The fire-resistance period is divided into the following classes: 30/60/90/120/180 minutes.

Fire-protection classes in accordance with DIN 4102 are identified with abbreviations depending on the component. Examples of fire-protection classes: Walls, ceilings, supports F 30/60/... Fire-protection walls F 90/120/... FS closures (doors etc.) T 30/60/... Cable enclosures S 30/60/90/... Installation channels I 30/60/90/... Conduit feed-throughs R 30/60/90/... Functional integrity of electr. cables E 30/60/90/...

Examples of descriptions (walls, ceilings, supports): F 30-A fire-retarding/non-combustible building materials F 30-B fire-retarding/combustible building materials F 90-A fire-resistant/non-combustible building materials F 30-AB fire-retarding/non-combustible and combustible building materials

Fire-protection walls with fire-protection classes F30-F180 in accordance with DIN 4102-4 are 1 or 2-layer, non load-bearing, internal separator walls with wall thicknesses from 100 mm. The insulating material used is defined in accordance with DIN 4102 Part 17. 2 x 12.5 mm plasterboard is often used for boarding. According to DIN 4102, the opposing installation of conventional cavity wall boxes is not allowed and the installation of individual installation boxes is only permitted depending on the melting point, the gross density and the thickness of the insulation material. The customer often needs to fit some form of sheath, e.g. with plaster, fibre silicate or similar. Cavity wall box for fire-protection walls For this area of application, KAISER has developed a cavity wall box for F90 fireprotection walls in accordance with DIN 4102-4 Tab. 48 (see page 10).

• Installation of an F90 metal stud walling in accordance with DIN 4102 Part 4

Fire-protection ceilings in accordance with DIN 4102 are either independent ceiling constructions or suspended ceilings used with ceilings of construction type I, II or III (concrete ceilings, brick ceilings). From fire-protection class F30 upwards, DIN 4102 requires a closed visible surface. Openings, for example  for luminaires, must be equipped with a corresponding enclosure. FlamoX® installation housings from KAISER (see page 18) are fire-protection housings specially developed for F30 ceilings.

• Construction type I, II, III Sub-ceilingsbelow rough ceilings in accordance with DIN 4102-4 of construction type I, II, III. The ceiling construction - rough ceilings and Sub-ceiling – provides the required fire resistance.

AFS – Active Fire Stop. The technology that guarantees preventative, active fire protection. If a fire starts from above, below, the front or the back, the fast-acting insulation layer in housings and boxes reacts immediately, generating foam which reliably seals the installation opening. The fire-protection class of the ceiling is retained up to S30 and of the wall up to F90. This successfully prevents the spread of smoke and fire.

In the event of a fire, KAISER AFS-technology maintains the fire-protection class of ceilings and walls, even with opposing installation, without expensive and time-consuming encasing.

The high level of reliability of the AFS-technology saves lives and prevents catastrophes in buildings and on ships. In cavity wall and ceiling boxes as well as in FlamoX® installation housings, this intelligent technology is already the new KAISER standard. KAISERTECHNOLOGY. For your future.

Preventative fire protection // FlamoX® installation housings

®

FlamoX . Intelligent fire protection.

FlamoX® installation housings for suspended F30 fireprotection ceilings. The FlamoX® system with KAISER AFS-technology protects people and property if a fire starts. When luminaires or loudspeakers are installed in F30 fire-protection ceilings, the housings acquire this fire-protection class and prevent the spread of fire and smoke. This protects escape routes and installation levels in buildings. When you plan with FlamoX®, you plan with safety.

Minutes that count. If fire-protection enclosures do not function quickly enough in an emergency, escape routes can become death traps. If a fire starts, a few seconds can often mean the difference between life and death. If the fire load comes from above or below, the fast-acting insulation layer of the KAISER AFS-technology in the FlamoX® housings reacts immediately to seal the housing safely. The ceiling opening is completely sealed extremely quickly and the S30 fire-protection enclosure is perfect and secure.

FlamoX . Planning freedom and safety. ®

Trust and control. Safety-relevant products and systems designed to protect human life must satisfy extremely careful checks. Even the smallest error can have catastrophic consequences. We take this responsibility very seriously. The FlamoX® system has been subjected to repeated tests and inspections in accordance with DIN 4102 and has received the following DIBt approvals: Z-19.15-1582 (FlamoX® -S30 H) Z-19.15-1623 (FlamoX® -S30 E) Z-19.11-1583 (fire-protection putty) as well as General Construction Approval Certificate from the Material Testing Institute of North Rhine-Westphalia number P-MPA-E-04-033.3. Approvals also exist for Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands. We have also applied for approvals for other European countries. One of the hardest tests for the FlamoX® housings was definitely the fire test at MPA-NRW-Erwitte. They were exposed to an extreme fire load from above and below under real-life conditions. We were only satisfied with the results after completion of several tests, and now we back the product 100%. All KAISER products comply with all current EN and DIN standards as well as the statutory regulations. They are manufactured in Germany in an ISO-certified manufacturing process. We leave nothing to chance – especially your safety.

The right system for every situation. The FlamoX® system lets you safely install luminaires and loudspeakers from almost all leading manufacturers. For use in one-layer or two-layer selfsupporting F30 ceilings, with or without insulation, or in suspended ceiling constructions, in connection with ceilings of types I, II or III in accordance with DIN 4102, in a newbuild or as a fire protection upgrade during renovation.

The FlamoX® housings offer the planner maximum design freedom without compromising on safety. The housing system also offers you the free space to make your plans independently of the manufacturer, even during the construction phase.

Preventative fire protection // ThermoX® installation housings

ThermoX . Preventative fire protection.

ThermoX . Keeps the heat under control.

The intelligent ThermoX® housing system offers protection against the possibility of fire caused by extremely hot halogen lamps in intermediate ceilings and ceiling areas. In particular, this system protects the moisture barrier foil, a vital part of the airtight building shell.

The extreme heat from halogen lamps can compromise the safety of buildings, material assets and in particular, the people living there. Moisture barrier foils and very dry components, for example insulation materials or wood structures, are in direct contact with these hot lamps.

®

ThermoX® was developed for the installation of halogen luminaires in wood-panelled and tiled ceilings and also for seamless sub-ceiling constructions such as plasterboard, mineral fibreboards, MDF and plywood with double slats and a layer of insulation above. If you want to install luminaires in new or existing buildings, or to use low or high-voltage lamps, ThermoX® is always the perfect solution for the airtight installation of halogen luminaires in insulated hollow ceilings.

®

Safety in the form of ThermoX® ThermoX® housings shield all combustible materials. They effectively eliminate the invisible but life-threatening danger and offer preventative protection for people, buildings and materials.

There is a possible risk of fire from the lamps with temperatures in excess of 200°C after the lamps have been switched on for only a short time. The extreme heat can be dangerous to all the materials in the ceiling construction and can cause a catastrophe.

ThermoX . Installation variants.

ThermoX® installation housings for slab and tiled ceilings and also seamless sub-ceiling constructions such as plasterboard, mineral fibreboards, MDF and plywood with cross-battening and a covering layer of insulation. Installation can be carried out from above or below (e. g. retrofit installation).

Slab ceiling/installation from above: During the ceiling installation Cut an installation hole and insert the housing from above. The shape of the front part ensures an exact and secure fit in the boarding. After the luminaire has been installed, the opening is completely concealed.

Plasterboard/installation from below: Installation with decorative covering/smoothing Before installation, check that the required installation depth is available. Cut an installation hole, chamfer the bottom edge of the installation hole (countersink), insert the housing from below and fix in place with a fast screw attachment.

Always use halogen-free cavity wall boxes when fire-protection measures are very important. This applies to public buildings with a high person volume, schools, hospitals, hotels or event venues. Buildings containing a high concentration of important objects (museums, computer centres etc.) also require increased fire-protection measures. Fire resistance of cavity wall boxes and casings. The fireresistance of cavity wall boxes with VDE test marks is tested with a hot wire test, i.e. without an open flame, at 850 °C (in accordance with VDE 0471 / IEC 695 Part 2-10). It is important to demonstrate that the boxes are self-extinguishing so that a fire cannot start in the cavity wall boxes if a fault occurs in the electrical installation. In addition, it is necessary to comply with the current fire-protection measures for wall construction.
