System description, fieldbus components
FBCon fieldbus distributors are available in industrial and EEx (ia) versions. They are used for coupling 1–8 field devices or sensors. The connection is made via stub cables. The stub cable is connected optionally by an M12 or 7/8˝ plug-in connector or directly via an EMC cable gland. The communication and device powering is handled by a common 2-core wire. This feature is the same for PROFIBUS-PA and Fieldbus Foundation.

The standard distributors are finished in grey paint, the EXapproved distributors are blue. Fieldbus Foundation distributors are black. PROFIBUS-PA distributors are generally equipped with a switch-in terminating resistor. In potentially explosive areas, the terminating resistor is manufactured with a separate box. This must be used instead of the right-hand cable gland. In the case of PROFIBUS-DP, an additional external 24 V DC power supply is required. This makes the terminator independent of the last station in the network.

PROFIBUS-DP distributors with 24 V supply
Profibus DP distributor The Profibus topology is a line structure. The branches (T-pieces) connect the individual field devices or remote I/Os to the bus cable. The length of the branch cable depends on the transmission rate and should be as short as possible. The total of all branch lengths for transmission rates up to 1.5 MBaud may not exceed max. 6.6 m. The trunk cable passes through an EMC cable gland into an aluminium enclosure where it is connected to a tension clamp terminal. The branch cable from the device is connected to a coded M12 socket. The enclosure has a pressure compensation element to counteract the effects of climatic cycles. The guidelines issued by the Profibus user organisation must be observed. PROFIBUS-PA
The PROFIBUS-PA is an open fieldbus standard (EN 50170, IEC 1158-2, DIN 19245). It was specifically designed for the requirements of process engineering, such as remote powering and intrinsic safety. The PROFIBUS-PA enables operation of several PA sensors and actuators on one bus line. The devices are powered using twin cable technology, and the transmission of process data is digital.

E PROFIBUS-PA T-connectors are now available also with fine surge protection or integrated current limiter to protect connected measuring devices, sensors or actuators from voltage surges or short circuits that might arise. As voltage-limiting protection elements are used gas discharge tubes and suppressor diodes, while a limiter protects the bus stations from short circuit. If a rapidly rising voltage pulse reaches the input of a T-connector with surge protection, the gas discharge tube ignites and discharges a high current. The residual pulse is limited by a suppressor diode. In the case of a slow rise in voltage, the pulse is processed by the diode

alone. The housing is connected to the protective earth via an external earth stud. Where the connectors with current limiter are used, the bus station is protected from short circuit by a protection circuit. The current can be set to either 20 mA, 40 mA or 60 mA by means of two DIP switches. Besides the additional functions of surge and short circuit protection, the advantages of the standard distributors are, of course, also provided.

The Fieldbus Foundation is an open fieldbus standard. It was specially developed for the requirements of process industry technology, including remote supply and intrinsic safety. Fieldbus Foundation enables users to operate several sensors and actuators on one bus cable. Power supply to the devices is via a twin cable system with digital transmission of the process data. 32 devices can be operated in one segment. Repeaters can extend the m aximum number to 126 sations with a maximum bus length of 10 km. For a transmission rate of 31.25 kbps, the bus length can reach up to 1900 m without repeaters, or up to 1000 m in explosion-risk areas. The bus can be wired as line, tree or star. Integration in the Fieldbus Foundation network is achieved by means of a segment coupler. Specific advantages • Low wiring costs • Minimum design costs for the process control system • Remote interrogation and programming of the field devices • Intrinsically safe design for use in hazardous areas Weidmüller can supply Fieldbus Foundation connectors. When servicing work is required or modifications are to be made to the system, Weidmüller Fieldbus Foundation connectors allow for field devices to be connected up or replaced without interrupting the bus system.
