Dresses for Mexico brighten lives

Some impoverished girls in Cuernavaca, Mexico, will be receiving some new dresses thanks to the charitable efforts of members of the women’s auxiliary at St. George’s Roman Catholic Church in Assiniboia. The large group of volunteers brought their sewing machines and spent October 26 transforming pillowcases into dresses. By lunchtime, almost a dozen dresses were finished. The finished products looked adorable adorned with ribbons and pockets. There is a need for simple clothing made of cotton that can be easily washed and is adjustable for growing children. Cuernavaca as a city dates back 3,200 years and is of archeological importance as a city of the ancient Aztecs. Since the 1960s the city has experienced a population boom growing from a population of close to 86,000 to a city with huge metropolitan expansion numbering over 800,000 today. Despite economic progress, there is incredible poverty in Cuernavaca. The women’s auxiliary initiative will help bring new dresses to some girls for the first time in their lives.
