Physician assistants to be licensed Saskatchewan is introducing legislative changes to allow a new profession of Physician Assistants to be licensed to practice in the province. The introduction of this new role will add more skilled professionals to the provincial health system to help address the demand for health human resources and provide a team-based approach to health care. The Medical Profession Amendment Act, 2023 introduced today in the Saskatchewan legislature will regulate Physician Assistants under the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan and establish the scope of practice for the new profession. They practice medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician, often within a multidisciplinary health team. Across Canada, Physician Assistants are mostly used in primary care, long-term care, emergency medicine, cancer care, general internal medicine and surgical specialties. Some of their key duties include conducting patient examinations, prescribing medications, and ordering and interpreting tests. “Thank you to the Saskatchewan government for introducing legislation to regulate Physician Assistants (PAs),” Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA) Director Saskatchewan Todd Bryden said. “This is a vital step in effectively introducing PAs into the province at a critic-

al time when the health care system has been stretched to the limit. Regulating PAs through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan means that PAs in the province will be required to follow standards for competency, safety, and ethics like other regulated health professionals in the region. This ensures they are accountable for the care they provide, and the public is protected, further strengthening and lending credibility to the PA profession in Canada. PAs are an integral part of the health
care team and will help enhance the capacity of our health care system.” Anticipated benefits to Saskatchewan patients include reduction in wait times, improvements in patient discharge rates, and a continued decrease in length of hospital stays. Physician Assistants will reduce resident and physician workload allowing our health care professionals the ability to see more patients in a timely manner. The Canada Border Services Agency is resuming regular hours of service at 42 ports of entry across Canada, which includes the nine land ports of entry in southern Saskatchewan. But that doesn’t mean hours will be extended for those heading to the U.S. Marco Mendicino, Canada’s minister of Public Safety, has announced that as of 12:01 a.m. (Eastern Standard Time) on March 31, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is reinstating pre-pandemic operational hours of service at 39 land and three air ports of entry (POE). The Port of Estevan will be open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. from the second Sunday in March to the first Saturday in November. It will be 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. the rest of the year. Similar hours will be in effect for Carievale, Northgate and Oungre. North Portal will remain open 24 hours, seven days a week. This is one of six crossing points in the country that will be open 24 hours a day. Meanwhile, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced Monday that it will begin a 120-day
temporary expansion of hours at four northern border ports of entry (POE). The four locations include Northgate and Sherwood in North Dakota. Sherwood is located south of Carievale. This expansion will temporarily add two additional hours of operation at the end of the current workday, resulting in new hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (North Dakota time). The ports of Noonan (located south of Estevan) and Fortuna (located south of Oungre) will remain open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m (North Dakota time). The three airports getting updated hours are Whetstone International Airport in Del Bonita, Alta., Piney Pinecreek Border Airport in Piney, Man., and Scobey Border Station Airport in Coronach, Sask. Travellers are encouraged to: visit the CBSA Directory of CBSA Offices and Services for hours of services at all ports of entry; take advantage of the various tools available to them to prepare for a smoother trip; have their travel and identification documents ready to show the border services officer upon arrival; and check border wait times when travelling by land.
