Weyburn pickleball player wins three medals at Westerns

Weyburn pickleball player Deana Mainil came home with three medals from the 2023 Pickleball Canada Western Regional Championships, held July 6-9 in Medicine Hat, Alta.

A total of 518 players competed on 20 outdoor and 10 indoor courts.

Deana competed in Women’s Doubles 4.0 (ages 19 – 59) on Thursday with partner Zsuzsa Papp from Saskatoon. They had nine teams in this division.

All games on A side were were best-of-three games to 11, winning by two points. Once a team was knocked to the B side, games went to 15, winning by two.

Weyburn Beavers split home games with Okotoks

The Weyburn Senior Beavers split their weekend games hosting the Okotoks Dawgs at Tom Laing Park, and dropped a doubleheader to the Moose Jaw Miller Express on Friday evening.

At home on Saturday, with an afternoon game held as part of the Weyburn Fair, the Beavers doubled the Dawgs by a score of 4-2, but then on Sunday, they were pounded 15-1. The games versus Moose Jaw were losses by scores of 7-2 and 2-0.

In the game on Fair day, the winning pitcher was Luke Zimmer, and Jamin Smith was credited with the save. Zimmer was on the mound for seven and a third innings, Jared Clark threw for part of an inning, and Smith came on in relief

for one inning. Zimmer recorded seven strike-outs, allowing two hits and one run, and Clark allowed one hit and one run. Smith had two hits but no runs.

On offence, Ryan Dauphinee had two hits, one run and one RBI; Muizelaar had two hits and one RBI; Ryan McCarthy had one hit; Robert Gurney had one hit and one run; Jaxson Davis had two hits, one run and an RBI; and Jared Hall had three hits, one run and one RBI.

It was a different story on Sunday afternoon, as the Beavers only scored one run, scored by Tyren Dorrance, with Dauphinee getting the RBI.

The losing pitcher was Owen McConnell, on

the mound for five and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and seven runs, and getting four strike-outs. Brett Paterson pitched for one and a third innings, allowing three hits and four runs, getting two strike-outs; Mason Fichter pitched for two innings, allowing two hits and four runs, and getting two strike-outs.

In Friday’s doubleheader, the Beavers were edged out 2-0 in the first game, and Angel Rios was named the losing pitcher, on the mound for the full six innings. He allowed five hits and two runs, and had three strike-outs.

In the second game, Ryan Meyer was the losing pitcher in a 7-2 score, on the mound for four and

two-thirds innings. He allowed five hits and six runs, and had six strike-outs. Clark pitched for an inning, allowing one hit and one run, and got one strikeout, and Fichter pitched the final third of an inning.

Runs were scored by Dauphinee and Davis, with Muizelaar scoring an RBI.

The Beavers do a homeand-home with Regina on Tuesday and hosting on Wednesday, and then will be on a long road trip, not playing at home again until July 23.

They play Thursday and Friday in Medicine Hat, in Swift Current on July 17, then they play in Sylvan Lake, two nights in Fort McMurray and back in Sylvan Lake before returning home.

Borderline Men’s league has full slate of games

There was a full slate of games played for Week 12 of the Borderline Men’s Fastball League. In all, six games were played in the Borderline Men’s Fastball League during the week ended July 8, 2023.

On Tuesday night, July 4th, at Tom Laing Park, Weyburn, the Renegades rallied big time in the 7th inning scoring multiple runs and recording a dramatic walk-off win over the visiting Ceylon Angels. That same night, the Ogema Colts travelled to Midale and won an impressive road win over the Jays.

Nick Struthers recorded the win for the Colts. Also on Tuesday, in one of the best played games in the league this year, the Gladmar Braves defeated

Raiders in Lake Alma by a score of 7-1. Both Josh Hlavka of the Braves and Brad Storle for the Raiders went the distance for their respective clubs and both pitched impressively. The Braves were able to put a few back to back hits together to manufacture some runs. Mike Floer hit an inside the park homerun for Gladmar. Only one error was committed in the game.

On Thursday evening, July 6th, the Weyburn Renegades travelled to Gladmar and defeated the Braves 14-10. The season series between those two teams is now split with one win each. The Raiders from Lake Alma travelled to Midale to play the Jays and beat them decisively with

new diamond

The Weyburn Minor Ball Association received a donation of $25,000 from Kingston Midstream on Monday morning, to go towards a new ball diamond at Clark Park.

The company believes in supporting local non-profit organizations, charities and community initiatives through their Community Investment efforts, with support from their parent company, James Richardson and Sons Ltd.

Kingston Midstream provides funding opportunities three times a year

through the Richardson Foundation, to organizations that provide services in the communities where they live and work.

The funds will go towards the irrigation for a new ball diamond under construction by Weyburn Minor Ball.

The new diamond will be for senior teams, and will be the same size as Tom Laing Park. Work will be underway this summer on the project by Minor Ball volunteers, said Minor Ball representative Shawn Whitrow, at the cheque presentation.

Tyler Corbin hit a no-doubter over the right field fence for Midale in the bottom of the seventh/ last inning. One of six make-up games was also played Thursday night, July 6, as Ogema travelled to Ceylon, losing to the hometown Angels 19-7.

As a result of play from Week 12, the standings in the league are all jammed

up: Weyburn, Plentywood and Gladmar all share top spot with 7 wins and 2 losses each. Ogema, Midale and Ceylon all share the number four spot with 3 wins each. Lake Alma sits alone at the bottom of the standings with 2 wins but have 4 games yet to play. Games scheduled for this week include, on Tuesday July 11, Ceylon at Gladmar, Weyburn at Midale, and Plentywood at Lake Alma. On Thursday, July 13, Lake Alma travels to Ceylon and Gladmar is at Ogema. All games this week start at 7 p.m.

In their first match, versus Tracy Sully and Young Yhun, they won 11-2 and 11-3. Deana’s partner pulled a calf muscle at the end of this match, so she got medical attention and played on.

In the second match, versus sisters Deb Widdis and Bonita Ewasechko, they lost the first game 119 and then won the next two 11-8 and 12-10.

In their third match, versus Angela Plamondon and Katlynn Soroka, Deana and her partner won the first game 11-9, and then lost the next two games by scores of 11-8 and 11-4, which bumped them to the B event.

In their fourth match, versus Sheila Crouch and Claudia Obando, they lost

15-5, and ended up with the bronze medal.

Deana played Mixed Doubles 4.5 (ages 50 and above) on Saturday with partner David Hesje from Elbow in a pool of seven teams, with the same format as Women’s Doubles.

In their first match, versus Lisa Stechly and Darrell Orth, they lost their first game 11-6 and then won their next two by scores of 11-9 and 12-10.

In the second match, versus Melody Fischer and Norman Kowalchuk, they won 11-6 and 11-3.

In the third match, versus Brenda Hawryluk and Steve Elder, they won the first game 13-11, but then lost the next two 11-2 and 11-8, knocking them to the B side.

In their fourth match, versus Melody Fischer and Norman Kowalchuk, they won 15-8.

This brought Deana and David back to the gold medal match where they once again had to play Brenda Hawryluk and Steve Elder in the fifth match. We won our first game 11-6, but then lost the next two 11-2 and 11-5 to earn the silver medal.

Deana played in the women’s singles 3.5 and over (ages 50-59) event on Sunday. This was a round robin with five players. Each match was one game to 15, winning by two, and Deana went on to win the gold medal.
