Weyburn Comp senior, junior teams do well at tournaments
Both the Weyburn Comp Eagles senior teams were away at basketball tournaments on the weekend, placing well in their respective competitions before taking on the Estevan Elecs this week for the McLeod Series. The Weyburn Comp Eagles Senior Girls basketball team traveled to Humboldt to play in a tournament on Feb. 9. They played Martensville on Friday and played strong from the start of the
game. They maintained their drive and push and came away with a victory, defeating Martensville 57-33. On Saturday, they faced Tisdale. The Weyburn girls were a powerful force and steamrolled the Tisdale Tornadoes, shutting them down to only one basket in each of the third and fourth periods, finishing the game 58-18. They went on to the gold medal final at 7 p.m. and faced the Humboldt

WCS Eagles player Cooper Knox got his arms tangled with those of two Estevan players as they all went for the rebound, during the Junior A boys tournament on Saturday. Weyburn won the game 71-40 over Estevan, and later won 75-15 over the Nakoda Oyade Education Centre.
the annual Water Tower Classic, hosted by Yorkton Regional and Yorkton Sacred Heart schools. On Friday the boys took on Tisdale to open the event. The Eagles started strong and never looked back, winning by a score of 94-64. Their second game Saturday saw a rematch from last weekend against the A.E. Peacock Tornadoes. Like last weekend, a tight match with several lead changes ensued with the Tornadoes taking a seven-point lead into the final minute. The Eagles pushed back but just couldn’t recreate the events from last
weekend, falling 90-84 in the end. This put the Eagles into the third-place game against the Balgonie Griffins. With the Griffins a bit short-handed, the Eagles jumped out to an 11-0 run before the opponents could get on the board. A solid team effort by the bench as the Eagles cruised to a 74-52 win. Next up for these young men is the McLeod series, which will determine not only the 2024 champion, but also the No. 1 team in the south moving into the last month of the season. on Feb. 10. The boys won the tournament with a 71-40 victory over Estevan and a 75-15 victory over Nakoda Oyade Education Centre. This is the third tournament in a row this season that the boys have won and it brings their overall record to 10-0. The boys played St. Michael on Monday in the Cugnet gym, and will travel to Moosomin for a tournament on Friday, Feb. 16 and Saturday, Feb. 17. The Junior A girls won their first game, 47-27, over Oxbow, then they lost to Melville by the score of 44-32.

Weyburn soccer player excited for her journey to Spain A Weyburn U13 soccer player, Gabriella Friesen, spent part of her vacation last summer taking in a soccer camp while in Toronto, and ended up with an invitation to play in an international tournament in Spain this spring. The camp had guest coaches from Madrid, Spain, and they covered many techniques and skills for playing the game. At the end of the evaluations of the players at camp, she was invited to be a part of Team Canada
for the World Cup in Madrid, to be held on March 20-29, 2024, with the competition to take place on March 25-28. This was a surprise to her, as she wasn’t even expecting to be playing at the camp when her family went out to Toronto for their vacation time. “We’ll have 11 training sessions before the actual competition, and a team bonding time, along with a tour of Madrid and the stadium we’ll be playing in,” said Gabriella.
She will need to raise funds for the trip, including the cost of the flight and her accommodations, so she and her family are making plans for fundraisers to help her out. A current fundraiser is selling Cheesecake in a Jar, with Creative Eats Cheesecakes, at a cost of $10 per jar. Those interested can go on her Facebook page, Gabriella’s Spain Journey, or go to the General Store/Big Jim’s downtown, where the jars are for sale.
To help her out, the Weyburn Soccer Association is sponsoring her for $1,000, plus the Weyburn Oilwomen have given her a $500 grant. The tournament will have 40 teams from 15 countries, with over 500 soccer players to take part in the competition. She noted she is very thankful to her soccer coaches for helping her develop her skills, particularly Tyler Hillstead, and Brennan Roy, who helped her develop as a goalie.

WCS basketball teams to host McLeod Series The Weyburn half of the historic McLeod Series, between the Weyburn Comp Eagles and Estevan Elecs senior boys and girls teams will be on Thursday, Feb. 15. The Estevan half of the games was on Tuesday night. The senior girls will play at 5:30 p.m., and the senior boys will follow. No artificial noise makers will be allowed. Gate charges will be the same as for the Co-op Challenge, as all adults and high school students are $5 each, or $2 with a non-perishable
food item for the food bank. Parents with a WCS season ticket get in at no cost, and elementary students and younger get in for free. The historic series started in 1931, and there were no games in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 2020-21 (due to COVID), and last year, in 2023, as the competition was cancelled due to “heightened emotions”. Not counting the start of the series on Tuesday night, Weyburn currently leads the series as they have won 47 times, while Estevan has 39 wins.
