Southeast College to celebrate 50th anniversary

Southeast College announced the celebration of its 50th anniversary in 2025. This milestone marks half a century of dedication to providing quality education and fostering community growth in southeast Saskatchewan. to meet the educational and training needs of the region. Over the years, the college has grown and evolved, adapting to the changing demands of the workforce and the community.

To commemorate this significant achievement, Southeast College has planned a series of special events and initiatives throughout the year. These include:

Highway 39 as part of a major project to build a round-about at the nearby intersection of Highways 39 and 13 by the Department of Highways and Infrastructure.

The original plan was to have Queen Street deadend at the south property line for A&B Concrete.

The City then received a request from Bill Vollbrecht on Dec. 11 to change the deadend boundary to Regina Avenue, to restrict traffic and prevent motorists

“We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone with our students, staff, alumni, and the community,” said Jody Holzmiller, Interim President and CEO at Southeast College.

“This anniversary is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone who has been a part

from using his property as a short-cut or for turning around.

The City then sent out a notice to adjacent properties with the revised location of the dead-end at Regina Avenue, and no responses were received.

With the second reading of the bylaw amendment on Monday night, the third and final reading was

The Ministry of Highways will provide all of the construction services and coordination with CPKC Rail on the south side of the crossing, and will also remove the road on the north side of the crossing, if directed to do so by the City by March of this year.

EDITORIAL

IT IS A SAD DAY INDEED

For those of you who haven’t heard, The Estevan Mercury recently closed their doors after 122 years. This was Estevan’s oldest business, even pre-dating Saskatchewan becoming a province.

I began my newspaper career with The Estevan Mercury in 1978 (yes, I’m that old). Fresh out of high school and not knowing what I wanted to do, I crossed paths with a man named Peter Ng. He convinced me that I had the talent to be a “graphic artist.” I had no training or experience and was given this fancy title which really was someone who designed ads. I guess Peter saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself as 47 years later, I’m still in the business. The industry has taught me a lot, from creating ads by hand using tape for borders to computer programs that drive me crazy.

Viewing some of the comments that accompanied the posting of the story of the Mercury closing, really made me think further. There were the ones who reminisced about their time working there, the fabulous community, thankful people who acknowledged the great staff that currently worked there, the 120 plus years of news, photos, memories, etc.

Then there are the keyboard warriors

who never have anything nice to say. No one reads newspapers. Everything is online or I get my news from Facebook. Well, my response to that is that Facebook IS NOT LOCAL. They do not employ any members of the community you live in. They do not pay taxes here. They are not accountable for any false stories or fact checking.

Remember that time when Amazon sponsored your church fundraiser? Remember when Facebook bought a case of Girl Guide cookies to support your daughter? Remember when Google provided free pizza to your child’s soccer team when they won the championship?

NEITHER DO WE! Local businesses live here. They play here. They invest here. They need our support, now more than ever.

My girlfriend in Estevan posted, “The Mercury closing is the end of a legacy. No more coverage of our amazing community. No more pictures of your kids in the paper. No more coverage of sports, events, celebrations, showcasing all the achievements and milestones of our citizens/ businesses, sharing sad news, public safety announcements, educating the public about important things. No more contests, giveaways, promotions. No more archiving

of our history. No more cutting out the stories and saving them in your photo albums. No more opportunity to promote your business in a trusted platform. No more paper routes for kids’ first jobs.”

To me, that’s all that needs to be said. Most of us understand the importance in business and our personal lives of supporting each other, whether physically, mentally or financially. We all have friends (at least at my age) that work above and beyond their regular work duties that the public doesn’t know about, but we see the impact it has on their lives. Long gone are those 40-hour work weeks for people who believe in their product and have a real passion for what they do. There is just not enough time in the day.

To those of you who say “it’s just a matter of time”, we will continue to do the best job that we can. Just like you make the best hamburger or have the best hairstylist, we can only exist with the assistance of others. Please continue to support your local businesses, as we need you as much as you need us. We’re all just trying to exist in this crazy world!

How to manage the fear of getting

Some people worry about their health and other aspects of their life as they age. Not knowing what might happen as you get older can be very scary for many people. As a result, here are some tips on how to manage the fear and anxiety of getting older in your life.

1. Stay healthy: The first step in not getting anxious as you get older is to get some exercise and eat a lot of healthy foods. It is important to be active and watch what you eat. Before exercising, you should talk to your doctor to make sure you do not hurt yourself.

2. Go to your doctor appointments: Make sure you go to your regular doctor appointments to make sure that nothing is wrong with you and your health. A lot of things can be prevented if you get an early diagnosis. This will help you to remain healthy without the fear of old age.

3. Keep your mind active: Another way of not getting stressed out as you

older

age is to keep your mind active. Do some crossword puzzles or other challenging games. Play some chess or some game that requires a lot of thinking. The more you use your mind, the better off you will be as you get older.

4. Reduce your stress: Learn effective ways to reduce the stress in your life. Stress is not good for you and it is important to know how to relieve your tension. There are counselors that you can talk to if you have trouble dealing with your anxieties.

5. Stay positive: Remain positive and avoid negative thinking. Read some selfhelp books that have a lot of positive affirmations and statements. Reading these statements can help you to remain positive and replace negative thoughts. If you still have trouble, then see a counselor who can teach you different ways to remain positive and help reduce your worry and stress.

Making a ‘Playful Project’

A brother and sister worked side-by-side on their “Playful Project” to make a penguin wood block with vinyl, at the Weyburn Public Library on Saturday morning. There will be a two-part “Playful Project” on Jan. 25 at the library that families can sign up for.

APAS asks for pause to capital gains taxes

The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) expressed serious concerns over the proposed changes to the capital gains tax regulations.

The changes pose significant challenge to the welfare of farmers and the sustainability of family farms across Canada.

APAS president Bill Prybylski said of the coming changes, “We have been taken aback by the pace at which these changes are being pushed without parliamentary approval. This creates a cloud of uncertainty for farmers, who are already facing numerous challenges. Immediate clarification and halting of these changes are crucial until a thorough discussion has been had in Parliament.”

The proposed regulations suggest new thresholds and limits on various inclusion rates, thus complicating the tax process related to capital gains significantly.

Since much of the farm value is tied in to land assets, these changes can drastically affect the continuity of family farms from one generation to the next.

“Clarity, stability and predictability in tax laws are essential for farmers to make confident, informed decisions about the future of their farm,” said Prybylski.

“These new tax rules are making everything too complicated. Farmers want clarity to make good decisions. Right now, without Parliament approval, it’s confusing and risky because it can change when Parliament does weigh in, making it impossible to plan with confidence.”

APAS is seeking an immediate intervention from the Minister of National Revenue, Marie-Claude Bibeau, to provide detailed information and to pause the proposed changes until more substantial discussions can be held.

APAS underscores the importance of farm succession planning, which could be severely impacted by

these tax changes. APAS is committed to collaborative efforts that ensure a successful resolu-

tion to the capital gains tax issue, promoting fairness and sustainability for all Canadian farmers.
