Looks can be deceiving! Although the skies are clear and the sun is out, winter has definitely arrived. This week, Weyburn saw extreme wind chill warnings and it looks as though the winter weather is here to stay for a while. The new year promises to ring in with warmer temperatures in the low minus teens.

On January 5, at the Allie Griffin Art Gallery, residents can begin to cast their vote for the People's Choice award. The James Weir People's Choice award began over 40 years ago, when Weir approached City Hall with the idea of forming an arts council. The successful development of the Weyburn Arts Council led James Weir to donate a small sum of money to be awarded to the winner of an annual event, entitled the James Weir People's Choice exhibit. Emerging artists participate in the annual event and this year the number of entries has increased to a total of 39. "People are asked to vote for their favourites: number one, number two and number three. There's also a kid's ballot. They're allowed to vote, but they have to be old enough to write their name," said Weyburn Arts Council curator, Ron Ror. "The public will have roughly six weeks to vote for their favourites before the winner will be announced at a reception on February12. The reception is open to all and free to attend."

Saskatchewan economic progress in 2014 As 2014 comes to an end, Saskatchewan's economy will likely set records for population growth, jobs created, manufacturing sales and wholesale trade. "There were major forces at work in 2014 that impacted economies all over the world," Economy Minister Bill Boyd said. "In spite of those pressures, several economic indicators surpassed 2013 levels as a result of our diversified and resilient economy." Saskatchewan's population hit a record 1,129,899 on October 1, 2014, up 1.63 per cent over October 2013, which is the second highest growth rate among the provinces. The unemployment rate in the province remained low at 3.4 per cent in November 2014. Saskatchewan has had the lowest unemployment rate among the provinces for 24 consecutive months. In the January-November period, Regina had the lowest unemployment rate (3.4 per cent) among major Canadian cities, while Saskatoon had the second lowest rate (4.1 per cent). Saskatchewan's job growth remains positive, with November 2014 recording 15,300 new jobs held when compared

Motorists reminded to slow down & watch for children returning to school The holiday season is coming to an end and children will soon be heading back to school. CAA Saskatchewan reminds drivers to be alert around schools and playgrounds. Here are a few safety tips for motorists: • Slow down to the posted speed limit. • Be prepared to stop for safety patrols at intersections and crosswalks. • Always stop for school buses that are loading or unloading students. • Allow students enough time to cross the street safely especially as intersections can be covered in ice and snow. • Watch for children darting out from between parked cars or buildings. CAA also encourages parents and guardians to help their children stay safe on the way to and from school by teaching them to stop, look both ways and listen before crossing the street, and to wait for the signal of the CAA school safety patroller when crossing the street in a school zone. CAA Saskatchewan has sponsored the School Safety Patrol program since 1951 and approximately 3,900 patrollers assist in 55 communities with 147 schools around the province. CAA Saskatchewan provides training materials, supplies, stop paddles and reflective vests free of charge or at cost. The 25th Anniversary of the CAA Saskatchewan School Safety Patrol Jamboree is scheduled for April 30 to May 2, 2015 in Regina. Registration and details are available at www.caask.ca/patrollers.

to November 2013, an increase of 2.8 per cent - more than triple the national average. This was the trend for the year with the first 11 months of 2014 recording an increase in employment of 10,500 people in the province, up 1.9 per cent over the same time period in 2013. Saskatchewan had the second fastest rate of job growth among the provinces. "Job growth continued to be strong in 2014," Minister responsible for Immigration, Jobs, Skills and Training Jeremy Harrison said. "We made significant investment into Adult Basic Education programming as well as training and apprenticeships to ensure our work force remains strong." Manufacturing sales totalled a record $14.0 billion in the first 10 months of 2014, a 5.9 per cent increase over the same period last year. Wholesale trade totals for the first 10 months of 2014 were a record $21.6 billion, up by 4.0 per cent over the first 10 months of 2013. "Looking back at 2014, it was a fairly good year for Saskatchewan," Boyd said. "As for 2015, forecasters predict the price of oil and our economy will bounce back - and we'll return as one of the top economic performing provinces in Canada."

DISPOSAL OF STUDENT CUMULATIVE RECORDS In accordance with the December 2012 version 2 of the Records Retention and Disposal Guide for Saskatchewan School Divisions, South East Cornerstone Public School Division will be disposing of student cumulative files for students born in 1988 and earlier. The New Year’s resolution

By Helen Waller It's that time of year again! We get to wipe the slate clean and start all over. New resolutions like eating healthy, exercising and spending less seem to be at the top of everyone's list. I am guessing that it has a lot to do with what we all just did in the last week or two. If your Christmas looked like mine, you ate too much and spent even more. I tell myself every year that it's going to be different, but alas, here I am with a full belly and an empty wallet. New year's has come and gone, and with it went my resolutions. I make them every year. By about mid January, (and that's stretching it) I have given up on the exercising every day and eating only healthy foods. It's not to say that I don't think it's a good idea. I definitely think our society could use a "less is a little more" mentality but the idea of having to stick to a regime all year long is actually depressing to me. So this year, I made a resolution that I think will be pretty easy to stick with. I am going to not make any more resolutions that I can't seem to hold on to. Rather, I am going to take each day as it comes. Start fresh each morning, doing the best I can. As a mom, and a woman, I think us gals have a tendency to be a little too hard on ourselves. (That's an understatement). We seem to focus on what needs to be done to improve something (like your husband's wardrobe….that's a whole other article), rather than focus on all the things we have done already! So this year, I have a new plan. I am going to take it day by day. I am going to learn from yesterday, hope tomorrow will be a little better but live for today. I plan to fit in as much exercising and eating healthy as my time spent at the rink allows. Right now, that's where I spend most of my days and one day I will miss being there. Perhaps a bottle of water rather than a pop at the canteen. Maybe stand and cheer, rather than sit and watch. Either way, I am going to do the best that I can. Each day, juggling work, kids and a husband (perhaps even sneak in a life of my own) will look different. Somedays take out will have to be on the menu, and somedays I may just pull off a turkey stew that is healthy and the kids actually enjoy. (Honestly…it just happened!). This year looks like I am going to be wearing a pair of rose coloured glasses. Some may even refer to it as denial, but I do believe what you look for, you will find. So, isn't it a wise choice to look at life for all the good things it has to offer? Perhaps that way you will find even more!

From one season to another By Linda Wegner It's all over for another year. Christmas, that is. Accompanied by a sense of mixed relief and sadness, for me the first week in January is busy with the work of packing away decorations and storing what's left of decadent goodies in the freezer. The list of things-todo also includes the job of fitting left-over rolls of wrapping paper into corners where they will be neither obvious nor forgotten. Although the weeks and for some, the months, of preparation that go into making Christmas a highlight of the year are marked by weariness and sometimes, stress, those thoughts are as quickly packed away as the trapping that go with the season. I tuck a lot of beautiful memories into those plastic bins destined for storage in the basement. Over the past month I've explored ideas for choosing gifts as well as thoughts concerning wrapping and unwrapping the presents we've chosen to give and the ones we've been blessed to receive. Heading into 2015, I'm facing the new year with a much more gentle attitude toward myself and others. Perhaps it's the aging process or a growing understanding of what God's love is about but in the midst of the pain and ugliness of a world seemingly determined to destroy itself, the Prince of Peace still reigns in the heart of those who ask Him to be their Lord. Where any trace of God seems negated by evil, Emmanuel, "God with us", is reborn within the life of anyone who accepts His request to come in. In other words, the peace and joy of Christmas don't have to exit with the entrance of another year. "…the eyes of the LORD your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end." (Deut 11:11,12) Happy New Year, His love is watching over you!

THIS WEEK’S ONLINE QUESTION

Some trouble over Christmas This was quite a different Christmas for our family. It was a good Christmas in that the whole family was able to get together, but especially that we were able to welcome a new baby girl into the family, just a few days before Christmas. But the circumstances of getting together were not the same as other times. Usually all of us are in quite good health, but this year was different. One son came home with a broken ankle, from cross country skiing, and was on crutches. Another son arrived with a bad sore throat, which lasted for quite a few days. But more trouble was that over half of the rest of us came down with the stomach flu. It wasn't all at once, but staggered over several days. And the intensity of the bug was different for each one. For one in the family, it was so bad that she was taken to the hospital for an IV, which fortunately helped her recover quickly. Stomach flu is never pleasant, but it is so much more difficult when so many in the family are affected at the same time. I wasn't pleased to see this sickness in the family, but there was something that I was pleased to see, and that was a willingness to help out. The ones who were well did what they could to help those who were sick and the young ones. One son had the magic touch of putting the infant down to sleep, and it seemed that he did this even better than his mother. Cathie did some night duty keeping an eye and ear open for a not well mother, and an infant, who needed attention. It seemed to me that everyone did all they could to help out wherever possible. Like I said, I wasn't pleased to see this flu bug, but it was very nice to see a family pulling together to get through a few tough days. But it made me think of the many people who don't have family and friends ready and willing to help out when needed. Sickness can make situations near impossible for single mothers and elderly and others who don't have good support near at hand. As we enter this New Year, let's seek to keep an eye and an ear out for those who might need a helping hand, and this will make for a better New Year for them, but also for you because I believe that God blesses those who look after the people that He loves so dearly, the people that He touches, through our helping hands. May you have a healthy and happy New Year and may you be a blessing to those who need your helping hand. - Rev. Doug Loden, Calvary Baptist Church

Sandy (Spencer) Johnson, her family and volunteers for once again hosting the JAMS Christmas dinner.

The 11th annual JAMS Family Christmas Day Dinner was a huge success this year. Jen, Ali, Mikki, Sandy (JAMS) and their friends and family put on a Christmas feast for 148 people who would otherwise have spent Christmas Day alone. Sandy and her volunteers fed individuals in the hall itself and delivered to several shut-ins in the community. The JAMS family were pleased to see many new faces come through the door. Johnson was happy to see that the real meaning of the event is starting to catch on, "that no one should spend Christmas Day alone." She added, "It has nothing to do with social or economic status, it's an event for everyone!" This year Sandy, her husband Joel and the rest of the family and friends served individuals ranging from six months old to 96-years-old. Johnson credits the success of the meal on the amazing financial support of the community. Several businesses as well as personal donations make putting on the meal a worry-free time for her family. "We have confidence in the community. They have always come through for us." The dinner is also a success because the hall is set up so that people can sit together and visit. Tables are set for ten with real china and cutlery. The JAMS family usually splits up and visits with the attendees. "It's all about relationships

and making people feel special and included," notes Johnson. The amazing volunteers have made the event easier every year. Johnson states that while they had a record crowd this year the amount of volunteers was down. "We had folks come in from as far away as Arcola to help us out." The volunteers we did have worked extra hard to set up and take down. Johnson noted that the packing up is the hardest part as she and her family are pretty tired by that point. "We were blessed to have the Fisher family show up to do dishes for about the fourth year in a row. They come in at 2:00 p.m. and wash dishes until they are all done-it's amazing." Although this dinner is free to anyone who can't afford to pay, Johnson is pleased that the dinner raised $1,400 dollars for the Knox Hall. The donation was a token of appreciation for the generosity shown to them for nine of the 11 dinners that have been served. The Knox has donated the hall to the JAMS family and they want to give back by donating to the Hall for a project of their choice. The JAMS family would like to thank everyone for making their 11th dinner a huge success. They look forward to making next year bigger and better.

Braving the cold weather, the 5th Weyburn Scouts group is hosting a fundraiser this Saturday, January 3 at the former Sarcan location. Scouts will be on hand that day to collect empty bottles, cans and juice boxes from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The Scouts will hit the streets of Weyburn, knocking on doors, collecting as many recyclables as they can but also encourage the drop-off location as an alternative for residents who wish to donate. All of the fund-raising collections will go towards the Scouts camp or registration fees. Anyone requiring more information can call Mark Thorn at 306-842-6319.
