Raise the Woof a success

Thank you, Santa

The second annual Raise the Woof event, held by the Weyburn Humane Society, was a huge success resulting in over $15,000 being raised. The evening which began with a social, included a roast beef supper followed by three stand up comedians performing. Attendees were able to bid on silent auction items throughout the evening.

Humane Society president, Kelly Eddy, said Raise the Woof was a great evening of fun, food, comedy and fundraising.

"It was wonderful. We raised over $15,000 with a lot of hard work from our volunteers and board members. It was a complete success and we're so happy," said Eddy. All of the money raised will be added to the new shelter fund."

The current shelter was built entirely by volunteers in 1994. The shelter has 10 inside dog kennels and 10 outside dog runs. The original cat kennels were made by a local welder, and have since been replaced with 24 stainless steel kennels donated by a generous citizen. There are four outside enclosed areas for the cats to enjoy the fresh air depending on the season.

The Weyburn Humane Society has already secured a date for next year's fundraiser of November 28, 2015. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to stop in at the Weyburn Humane Society if you are looking to adopt a pet. This time of year poses a particularly dangerous threat to animals that roam the city streets. Harsh winter climates across the province leave animals subject to frost-bite, starvation or even death. The WHS will continue to work diligently all year round to provide shelter and food to animals that have been misplaced by their owners or who have no home of their own.

Seven hundred years before the First Christmas, one of many promises by Old Testament prophets was made about the coming of the Christ.

"For unto us a child is born," wrote Isaiah, "unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace".

Peace? Isn't that the prom-

ise of Christmas? Not just peace between nations but between each of us…toward each of us…for each of us.

Should we not then be about the work of keeping that promise? Not just this season but all the year?

How then can we keep it?

We need only look to the examples all around us in this amazing Saskatchewan…to find that answer.

Years ago, for example, an Indian family immigrated to Canada and ended up in Victoire, Saskatchewan. They found warm hospitality in a church in the nearby town of Canwood.

It was there they were first invited into a home to share the Canadian family's turkey dinner.

They were impressed by the food and the love shown to them and the next year another new friend came and helped them prepare their first turkey dinner. It is now their own tradition that they have passed down to their kids.

Someone kept the promise of Christmas for them…and now they do it for others.

A young boy from Waldeck, Saskatchewan, said to his Mom, "Ya know Mom, people should be buying toys for all those kids who don't have toys. I don't need more toys.

I've got lots. Actually I should be giving more of my toys to all of those kids who don't get anything."

His Mom recognized a teachable moment, and she made good use of that caring thought and together they packed some shoeboxes for Samaritan's Purse.

And that Waldeck Mom and her son…kept the promise of Christmas.

In Prince Albert, two young women, First Nations University students started a blessing bag project to reach out to the homeless.

The blessing bags are full of helpful small items, meant to add a little spark to someone's life, just when they need it most. And with each blessing bag, the promise of Christmas is made anew and kept anew.

Do we not, each of us have promises to keep this Christmas…for unto us a Child is born…the very Prince of Peace.

From me and my wife Tami, and our children: Megan and our future son-in-law Kyle, our son Colter and our youngest Faith, and on behalf of my colleagues in the Government of Saskatchewan, I wish you a Christmas full of shared blessings, and kept promises in surroundings filled with love.

Dear Santa

By Helen Waller The lists have been made and hung on the fridge. The letters have been written and sent to the North Pole. The wishes have been sent, just awaiting reply. Each day, edits keep being made to those lists. My seven-year-old recently added an iPhone to his list, which he spelled as Ifhone. It made me laugh, thinking that if you can't spell it, you definitely don't need it. So what happened to my wishes over the year? My grammatically correct spelled wishes for a wad of cash, a trip to Mexico and a hot tub still haven't been answered. I am guessing it is because I gave up letter writing years ago. I guess it's time to give it a whirl again, so here it goes!

Dear Big Guy, Hey Santa, it's me! You may not have heard from me for awhile but you have definitely heard of me. I am the gal who decided to exchange a year's worth of being naughty for one morning of opening presents. (Don't tell my mother!) Let me tell you, I don't regret that decision. In fact, the last 364 days have been pretty fun.

The ladies' Christmas party last weekend was the perfect reminder that as I grow up, I don't need anything to open up (well, except that bottle of wine we had). We had a great time. The stories we exchanged were kind of like Mexico - what happens at the Christmas party, stays at the Christmas party. As each year passes, it becomes more apparent to me that friends, family and fun are the perfect mix for the holiday season. The sweater I receive or the new perfume I get are no replacement for the memories made in the Christmas season while spending time with family and friends.

With that being said, I do have a few requests to leave with you that aren't material goods but would make the season go a lot smoother.

To begin, please don't ask me to bake cookies to leave for you on Christmas Eve. We both know it's in your best interest if I throw a few store-bought cookies on the plate. I mean, do you really want to risk food poisoning on your biggest night of the year?

Also, please pass the message along that I no longer want scratch tickets from my husband. (Perhaps one of your elves could whisper in his ear at night.) I know he loves them, so he thinks they are a great gift, but the only way I want one is if it is a winning one - then it could be a win-win situation. He would scratch the tickets he gets for ME every year (again) and I would get the wad of cash I have been longing for.

Next, no more clothing… unless it is from my bff who actually knows my style. No more ugly sweaters, turtlenecks, mitts or scarves. The exception to this rule, of course, is a bathing suit, and the only reason you would willingly buy a bathing suit for a woman is that you are surprising her with a trip to Mexico. Otherwise, it would be in your best interest to head that direction anyways.

Finally, no more bath products. I have enough stock to keep the City of Weyburn as fresh as peaches for the next three years. That being said, hot tub products do not count. If, for some reason, I will need to receive specialty bath products to apply to my skin after I get out of the hot tub you delivered, I will understand.

With all that said, do your best. Deliver from nice to naughty on Christmas Eve. I will understand if you don't have the time to get to me. I'm not too worried about receiving "stuff". I have a way of making my own Christmas magic all year 'round.

The Geese

"...the Word became flesh and dwelt among us." John 1:14 Author Unknown [If you know the source, please inform us] There was once a man who didn't believe in God and didn't hesitate to let others know how he felt about religion and religious holidays, like Christmas. His wife did believe and raised their children to have faith in God and Jesus.

One snowy Christmas Eve, his wife was taking their children to a Christmas Eve service in the farm community in which they lived. She asked her husband to come, but he refused as usual... "The Christmas story is nonsense!" he exclaimed. "Why would God lower Himself to come to Earth as a man? That's ridiculous!" She and the children went, and he stayed home.

That night the wind began to blow and the snow turned into a blizzard. As the man looked out the window, all he could see was a blinding snowstorm. He sat down before the fire-place to relax. Suddenly there was a loud thump. Something had hit the window. Then a second thump. He looked out, but couldn't see more than a few feet because of the blinding snow.

When the storm let up a little, he ventured out to see what could have been beating on his window. In the field near the house was a flock of wild geese. Apparently they were flying south when they were caught in the blizzard and couldn't go on.

They were lost and stranded on his farm, without food or shelter. Flapping their wings, they aimlessly flew around the field in low circles. Some had apparently flown into his window. The man felt concern for the geese and wanted to help them.

The barn would be a great place for them to stay, he thought. It was warm and safe. They would be saved if they spent the night there waiting out the storm.

He opened the barn doors wide. Then he watched and waited, hoping they would notice the open barn and enter. But the geese just fluttered around aimlessly and didn't seem to notice the barn or realize what it could mean for them.

The man tried to get their attention, but that just seemed to scare them and they moved further away. He went into the house and brought out some bread, broke it up, and made a breadcrumb trail leading to the barn. They still didn't catch on.

Now he was getting frustrated. He got behind them and tried to shoo them toward the barn, but they only became frightened and scattered in every direction except toward the barn.

Nothing he did could get them to go into the barn where they would be safe. "Why don't they follow me?" he puzzled. "Can't they see this is the only place where they can survive?"

He thought for a moment and realized that they just wouldn't follow a human. "If only I were a goose, then I could save them," he said out loud.

Suddenly he had an idea. He went into the barn, got one of his own geese, and carried it in his arms as he circled around behind the flock of wild geese. When he released his goose, it flew through the flock and straight into the safety of the barn. One by one the other geese followed it to safety.

He stood silently for a moment as the words he had spoken a few minutes earlier replayed in his mind: "If only I were a goose, then I could save them!" Then he thought about what he had said to his wife.

Suddenly it all made sense. That is what God had done. We were like the geese--blind, lost, perishing. God had His Son become like us so He could show us the way and save us. That was the meaning of Christmas, he realized. As the winds and blinding snow died down, his soul became quiet. Suddenly he understood what Christmas was all about, why Christ had come.

Years of doubt and disbelief vanished like the passing storm. He fell to his knees in the snow, and prayed his first real prayer: "Thank You, Lord, for coming in human form to get me out of this world and leading me to a better one. Lead me to the safety of Your Father's arms."

For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted." Wrapping the perfect gift

By Linda Wegner There, the shopping's done and now I can relax. Right? Well, not quite. Although having completed the purchase of those gifts is a major accomplishment, the task isn't quite finished until each present is wrapped and addressed in an appropriate manner.

I say "appropriate" simply because there are several questions to be considered in this close-to-final step: who is the recipient, who is the designated giver of the gift and what resources are available?

The recipient of any gift figures prominently into the choice of wrapping material. For example, funky newspaper or newspaper-style packaging might tickle the fancy of an artsy kind of person. The mother-in-law may be less impressed. Or, what little boy wouldn't be delighted with a gift bag or wrapping paper festooned with pictures of trucks or John Deere tractors?

A second factor to be taken into consideration is the giver of the gift. While an adult might invest time, thought and extra money into ensuring it is beautifully wrapped, a child's offering may resemble a "patch-on-one's-knee" effort. The wrapping on gifts given by businesses are typically simple and professional; those from and to special friends or lovers can be almost opulent.

There is a lot to think about in this traditional practice of exchanging gifts and most important is the reality that "a thing" is just part of what we offer someone else. Be it love, support, friendship or, sadly sometimes tainted feelings, we share ourselves.

Beyond the borders of December, who we really are is always wrapped in imperfection.

No matter how shiny the exterior may appear to others, each of us needs to be loved and accepted for who we are.

Finally, let's not forget we have been given and we are to be givers of earth's greatest need and heaven's greatest resource -God's love.

Jerry Mainil donates $10,000 to Hospital Foundation This year, the staff of Jerry Mainil Limited continued to take a different approach to gift giving. Rather than clients receiving presents as a thank-you for their patronage, the choice was made to donate $10,000 to the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation.

"Instead of giving gifts to our customers or clients, we've decided to pay it forward and pay it back to the community," explained Jerry Mainil representative, Darcy McCormick.

Staff members of Jerry Mainil met with representatives from the WDHF to present the cheque. Chairman of the WDHF, Mal Barber, expressed gratefulness for the generous donation. He noted that this year was the third year that Jerry Mainil Limited has taken this route.

Renewal stickers required by December 31

Senior Centre news

Residents with provincial health coverage who have not received their health card renewal stickers in the mail are encouraged to contact eHealth Saskatchewan before December 31, 2014. The stickers validate health cards for a three year period from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2017.

"Saskatchewan health cards ensure people are covered for a variety of medical services," Health Minister Dustin Duncan said. "We want to make sure all residents have an up-to-date sticker on their health cards so their health coverage is not interrupted."

The most common reason for people not to receive their renewal stickers is because they have moved and not updated their address with eHealth. This year, eHealth Saskatchewan mailed health card renewal stickers to more than 689,000 households in the province from September 15 to 30.

Police remind residents to be aware of scams On December 14, the Weyburn PS were called to a report of a fight at a local pub. Upon arrival, the incident was over.

The altercation was between a 41 year-old male and a 30 year-old male. A 36 year-old male tried to step in to break up the fight, which resulted in him getting struck as well. The matter is still under investigation.

Also on December 13, at about 7:40 a.m., the Weyburn PS received a report of a vehicle that had just struck a residence on Tenth Street. As a result of that investigation and the assistance of the general public, a second scene was located where what is believed to be the same suspect vehicle struck a business. The driver fled on foot and was arrested a short distance away. At this time the 28 year-old male driver is facing charges of; refusing to take a breath test, impaired driving, resisting arrest and breach of a court order. The matter is still under investigation. The accused will be making a court appearance. One Weyburn PS Member received minor injuries as a result of making the arrest.

On December 13, the Weyburn PS, in conjunction with the Weyburn Det. RCMP and RCMP Traffic Services, conducted a series of checkstops within the community. In excess of 300 vehicles were checked, resulting in only three charges of driving an unregistered vehicle.

On December 11, Weyburn PS attended to the following: The Weyburn PS received a complaint that a number of vehicles in the 100 block of Ash Drive had been tampered with. Anyone who may have information on this matter is asked to contact the Weyburn PS or Crime Stoppers.

The Weyburn PS received a report of a vehicle/pedestrian collision on Government Road and Souris Avenue.

While crossing the street, a 61 year-old male victim was struck.

He received only a skinned hand and required no medical attention. No charges will be laid.

The Weyburn PS are investigating a report of erratic driving on the City Centre Mall Lot. About 11:05 p.m., cleaning staff heard a vehicle driving erratically in the parking lot, spinning its tires. As a result, a spray of rocks shattered out a window. Anyone having information on this matter is asked to contact the Weyburn PS or Crime Stoppers.

The Weyburn PS responded to a report on Railway Avenue and 11th Street of a hit-and-run vehicle collision where a Sask Power light standard had been knocked down, creating a hazard. The suspect vehicle is believed to be a 20092013 white GMC truck.

On December 10, the Weyburn PS responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a residence between a 35 yearold male and a 49 year-old female. As a result of police involvement the 35 year-old male agreed to go to bed. Alcohol was a contributing factor. There were no further incidents.

from a 27 year-old female that she had been assaulted by a 26 year-old male whom she once had a relationship with. As a result of the investigation, the 26 year-old male has been charged with 2 counts of assault and 1 count of uttering threats. He will be making a court appearance.

On December 9, Weyburn PS attended to the following: A 62 year-old female fell victim to yet another internet scam.

In this scam, the victim received what appeared to be a legitimate email from her banking institution advising her of a security breach. When she followed the instructions to rectify the issue, she later learned that her account had been accessed and funds were missing. The financial institution has since returned the money to her account.

The Weyburn PS received a report that between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. a fence in the 200 Block of 11th Street had been damaged by a vehicle which fled the scene. Anyone having information on this is urged to contact Crime Stoppers or the Weyburn Police.

On December 8, the Weyburn Police Service assisted the Weyburn EMS with regards to a suicidal 17 year-old male threatening to harm himself with a knife. The youth was transported to the Weyburn General Hospital where he was later discharged to the care of his family.

The Members of the Weyburn PS will continue to be out in force checking for drinking drivers and other infractions during the next weeks.

Over the past 2 days the Weyburn Police Service has received upwards of 12 complaints of letter scams circulating.

In all cases the letters were similar except for whom they were addressed to. In all cases they involved a large estate of a deceased person and the bank or financial institution tracking the Weyburn person down as the lawful heir of the estate.

While these letters did not request anything up front, rest assured that they would quickly request personal identification information and cash to finalize the transaction. The address and telephone numbers are overseas and the language in the letters is not proper or correct English.

We once again ask our community to be diligent in acting upon any such request and verify the information before supplying any personal identification information or money.

Again, the age-old adage must apply here; If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

Christmas message from Souris-Moose Mountain MP It's Christmas! The Christmas season is a special interlude and a break from the busyness of our lives. I love to hear Christmas carols, Christmas music in the shops, and to watch the hustle and bustle of Christmas shoppers. Everyone seems a bit more jovial and there is a spirit of celebration in the air. It is also a time to visit, to partake of Christmas food, to find some personal time, to read and relax, and to simply enjoy the season.

Notwithstanding personal trials we may endure, there are so many more benefits and blessings that we can be thankful for. We live in a great country where personal freedom, the pursuit of justice, and the rule of law is the norm.

Yes, we can celebrate with hope, for as Isaiah the prophet says in Isaiah 9:6: "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

My Favourite Christmas Memory My favourite Christmas memory is when I got my first hockey stick. It was a RBK wooden hockey stick. The moment I got the stick I knew I wanted to keep playing hockey. I loved that stick. I was 4 when I got it. I was playing my first year of Initiation. I started one year early and played three years of Initiation. I was on my brother's team and scored 10 goals. I was on the "Great Plains Ford Mustangs". I would stand by the other teams net when the puck was in our net, there were no offsides, so my brother would pass it down and I would be on a breakaway. That's how I scored all my goals! And that was my favourite Christmas memory.

Then when the dugout was frozen we would skate on it. Then Christmas morning I was the first one up so then I woke everyone else up. So we could open gifts. So after we were done we went out to the dugout. Our neighbors have cows and the fence was loose so the cows came to skate with us. Then we went to the hill and went sledding. Then when I was climbing up the hill on the side, this guy came down and knocked me over and I did a back flip and I fell on my face. That was my favourite Christmas memory.

My most favorite Christmas was when I got my iPod. Before I got an app store card which gave it away. Also when I was going to get my iPod I thought it was an X-box 360 because the box was so big. When I got that present my mom put in 6 more boxes in there so I got mad.

After I got the box that had my iPod in it I ran to my room to set it up. I went to my sister so she can help because she has one and when I got on it I went to my room to play on it. And that is my favourite Christmas.

Later that morning my family and I went to my grandmas to have brunch. The food we had was fruit, eggs, toast and much more. After brunch we opened up the presents that our family bought. The best thing about that Christmas was that I got see my family because I don't get to see them often. After presents my Mom and my sister and I went home to have a relaxing day at home.

When I took the red and white wrapping paper, I thought why would I want oranges. My Mom told me to look in the box. So I did. The green tissue paper was everywhere. When I opened the ring box I was so happy because I love rings.

The ring was gold with a red ruby. I put the ring on all my fingers. It fit on my middle finger.

I ran upstairs to show my grandma. I told my grandma that my Mom gave it to me for a Christmas present.

Every house in the community had a Christmas tree and Christmas lights were everywhere. We watched fireworks on Christmas Eve and several groups of kids did caroling in every neighborhood. We gave them either candy or money. We didn't get a lot of gifts in the Philippines but we had so much fun playing with our cousins and our friends.

I asked my Mom for some hot chocolate. She gave me some. She told me she had to go outside for a minute or five. So I sat in front of the Christmas tree, but accidentally spilled on the carpet. I tried getting some dish soap but it stained. I even tried hand sanitizer, it only made it wet. So I got paper and covered it. They have never noticed once since then.

By Dalton, Grade 3/4 - St. Michael School When I was about 7 years old and it was Christmas I was racing to go open presents. I wanted to open the small one but my Dad said "Don't open any presents until I wake up!"

So I went back to sleep. Then I heard my cat. I got my Dad up, again, to open presents. I got my clothes on. I wanted to open my present first so I picked the smallest present. When I opened it, it was a soup box. I was mad! They told me to look inside and it was an iPod, but I thought it was fake. So I threw it on the ground. My Dad said "it's an iPod". It was my favourite present.

And I found him making sugar snow angels! Then we got to give him hugs because he was going home to see Santa Claus!

Then we went to go to my Granny Joyce's house to play and we had a gift exchange with my relatives. We had to wrap a present in duct tape! My Uncle Murray got me a Dairy Queen

gift card because he works there. Then we all got our presents. Finally we all went home.

My grandma and grandpa got to our house and we opened more presents. I opened the biggest one first which was an air hockey table. It was cool. My sister, my brother and I played for 1 hour. Then we went outside sledding. We went down a big hill. It was awesome. Then it was time for bed and I was really tired and I slept good that night.

I went to my grandma and grandpa's. We had a Christmas supper. We opened presents from family. Then we went home and we went to bed. In the morning I got lots of presents. We saw Santa didn't eat or drink all his milk or eat all his cookies. He thanked us by making a note we gave his reindeer food. I got a pellet gun and gum. We shot it the next morning. It was fun even though I didn't hit the can. At the time I could not lift the gun. So my dad got a stick to hold it up and it was perfect. I could then hold it. The gum was gone in about 3 days.

12 Weyburn This Week, Friday, December 19, 2014 This year is going to be my best Christmas ever, because I am getting a computer and I am going to Calgary. When I am in Calgary I will see my cousin, grandma and uncle. It will be lots of fun and that will be the first time I get to use my computer. I am going to get Minecraft and more games to play on my computer. It is going to be awesome because I am going to do a bunch of YouTube videos on it. I can't wait because it will be so much fun, even though I go to Calgary every 2 to 3 years. This will be my best Christmas ever.

My best Christmas was last year. I got an iPad, Lego, chocolate, bow, gum and a 3DS. We would go and play for the day and it was fun. On Boxing day we went to grandmas for one day. Then we went to Cypress Hills and have fires, went hiking, swimming, ice fishing and sledding. On the last day we had a fondue and went to Red Lodge. We would go skiing, snowboarding and swimming. Then next day we went and played with our Christmas presents. That was my best Christmas ever!

My favourite Christmas memory was when my brother Alex and I woke up early in the morning. It was still really dark out but me and my brother Alex still went to see if Santa had came and he had. So we went to see what he brought us and he brought a sled and a Nerf Rebelle gun. But there was a bag full of stuff beside it. Then we both went back downstairs and laid in bed for a little bit. Then we woke up my older brother Braeden and we all went upstairs. When Mom woke up we just had to wait for my Dad to come home.

When he came home we opened presents. Two things I got were craft stuff and clothes. After presents we played for a bit. Then I got dressed in my new clothes.

The stockings were up and the fire was warm. The tree was colorful and my family was there. The snow was falling and we were opening presents. My dog came in and found his present right away. He came and ripped it open and found food. He loved his present! He ate it and we all ate too. The next day we made snow angels until we got cold. We came in and had hot chocolate with marshmallows. We played with are toys for a couple of hours. Than we had lunch and we had more fun. The end.

It was a cold winter Christmas Eve. Me and my brother were playing mini sticks until I was sent to bed. I could barely fall asleep. I could not wait for Christmas day. I woke up and waited for grandma, grandpa, Mom, Dad, brother and sister to wake up and come downstairs. I unwrapped my presents and I got an Xbox 360 and other gifts like NHL 12.

On Christmas I woke up forgetting it was Christmas, then Max came and said "It's Christmas!" really loud in my ear. I got out of bed, went upstairs and told Mom, Dad, grandma and grandpa to wake up so we can open presents! I was the first to open a present. I got a boom box and two CD's. I also got a Crayola girl set, a pair of socks, a box of makeup, a kitten in a basket (fake). I got two Barbies which were Chelsy and Barbie. I got a bottle of body wash and a nightie.

Weyburn This Week, Friday, December 19, 2014 13 I woke up in the morning and there was one more day until Christmas. I was very excited. Ding,dong ding,dong. I opened the door and my friends invite me to a project. I was surprised because the project is for survivors of typhoon. It was noon when I got there. I rang the bell one of the helpers came. He give me a tour of the house there were many rooms.

We went inside and I started helping. When I was finished helping, I went home happily. It was suppertime. I was sleepy when I finished eating and I fall asleep. When I woke up it was Christmas.

We read every night before Christmas. I rode the Christmas train. It was fun. We had hot chocolate, cookies and we got to colour Christmas pictures. It was the night before Christmas we were excited. We put our milk and cookies out and got carrots for the reindeer. Then we went outside to put the sparkles on the snow to show the reindeer the way. The next day we woke up and there were lots of presents. The end.

Great. Guess what? I forgot to write my letter to Santa. It's already the day before Christmas. The guests could arrive any minute now. Beep! The buzzer rang, and I ran to look out the window. It was my Aunty and Uncle from Regina.

A little bit later, the guests were here. I was in my Mom's bedroom playing with my cousins, Mom was cooking and the men were watching T.V. We had turkey and stuffing for supper. I woke up late. I ran to the living room in a hurry.

Wait! I forgot to write my note! Did I get anything? I got gourmet jelly beans from Santa, and my iPad from my Dad. This is a Christmas I will remember.

14 Weyburn This Week, Friday, December 19, 2014 We were spending the evening at my friend's house. When suddenly there was a big THUMP! And CLOP, CLOP, CLOP! Everyone freezes. There is a knock at the door. Dad answers it and Santa walks in HO, HO,HO! My sister screams and runs up to him and gives him a big hug. Then my friend asked "what are you doing here!" And Santa says "oh this blizzard is so bad I crashed on your roof," "Good thing you're okay" says my friend's Mom as she wraps a blanket around him. We give him a cookie and glass of milk. Once he finished he each gave us all HO, HO,HO. Thank you, have a wonderful night!!!

We were driving to the Grace United Church for a very special day. Today was when we go to Dollarama for Operation Christmas Child. "Okay everyone" called Abby, over top of all the noise. "Let's line up with a partner". We walked out of the church and started walking to Dollarama.

I was feeling really lucky to be able to make kids from all over the world happy. To have a present to open on Christmas.

"Wow this feeling's amazing, I wish I could do this every year!"

I thought to myself. After an hour or so, shopping was done.

We returned to the church, packed boxes and sang Christmas carols. It was my best Christmas MEMORY.

My favourite Christmas is when my uncle Don and my auntie Carla and all my cousins came from BC. We were all outside and my uncle Don kept chasing me and my sister Reece and saying "woohoo, woohoo". All of a sudden we thought he was done but he wasn't. He was hiding behind a car and he came around screaming like he was before, "woohoo, woohoo". You should have seen the look on the neighbours' faces. They thought we were crazy and they were, I mean who does that. Then after that we went inside and opened presents. That's my favourite Christmas!

When we went outside she said it was very cold but it wasn't that bad. We built a huge snow fort and made little decorations out of ice by filling up balloons with water, then we put food coloring in the balloons, and finally we tied the balloons. We let it freeze then peeled off the plastic. My brother Andrew and my cousin Dawson built a snow fort too! After we finished the forts we had a snowball fight. Sheridan and I won! It was the best Christmas in the world!

The Christmas that I remember most is perhaps the best holiday memory I have. I remember sitting in the armchair in my grandparents living room. The fireplace crackled in front of me, warming me to the bone. My grandma sat on a chair watching the BBC. My Mom was reading a book she couldn't seem to finish. My sister and the cat were playing among the wrapping paper strewn across the floor. My grandpa and my Dad were trying to clean up the mess without much success. Best of all, my Aunty Jill was here! I was happy because she lives in Montreal and I don't get to see her much. It was without a doubt, my favorite Christmas memory.

The Best SCKC collaborates with SASW Christmas Ever

Sun Country Kids Club Executive Director Sheryl Willms-Bromm (left) and staff member Jessica Fenwick, pose with a copy of the 2015 SASW calendar and the $300 honorarium they received for partnering in the project.

The Sun Country Kids Club was asked by the Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers for their assistance to create the 2015 SASW Calendar in early spring. Each year, a new human services organization is chosen to participate and contribute to the calendar. The calendar is distributed to over 1500 registered Social Workers across the province.

This year the theme chosen by the SASW was "Change". Executive director, Sheryl Willms-Bromm worked alongside the children at the club to create 12 vibrant and beautiful pieces of art to be featured in the calendar. As a gesture of thank you, the SASW presented the SC Kids Club with a $300 honorarium and copies of the calendar, which arrived this month.

The members of SASW would like to extend their thanks to all the children and staff at the Sun Country Kids Club for their help with the 2015 calendar.

Students of Souris School performed “The Best Christmas Ever” in front of a packed house on December 16.

Seven wrestlers from the Weyburn Wrestling Club attended the first trial for the 2015 Western Canada Games in Regina on December 14.

After an afternoon of wrestling, Nathan Bradley 115 kg weight class, Aaron Hemphill 50 kg male weight class, Carter Barrett 58 kg male weight class, Tyler Fleming 63kg male weight class and Frankie Gawryluik 61 kg female weight class were ranked first in their respective weight classes. Katelyn Franklin 57 kg female weight class and Ryan Verbeem 69 kg male weight class were ranked second in their classes.

The second and final trial will take place in Regina in the spring of 2015 with the winners representing Saskatchewan at the Western Canada Games in Fort McMurray, AB in August 2015.

Attending were nine Weyburn wrestlers. Katelyn Franklin finished first in Novice Female 61 kg; Carter Barrett finished first in Novice Male 59kg and Tyler Fleming placed first in Novice Male 64 kg.
