Weyburn YF Club to receive Premier's Service Club award The first four recipients of the new Premier's Service Club Award were announced and represent volunteer community organizations from Weyburn, Balgonie, Kipling and Meadow Lake.

"Saskatchewan is truly blessed to have such wonderful and dedicated local service clubs which help when people need it the most and make our communities better places," Premier Brad Wall said. "I look forward to seeing many more of these organizations recognized for their charitable work in the years to come."

The award's inaugural recipients, who will be presented certificates signed by the Premier, are: • Young Fellows' Club of Weyburn.

• Balgonie Elks No. 572; • Kipling and District Lions Club; • Meadow Lake Kinsmen and Kinettes The Young Fellows Club of Weyburn was established in 1922 with the goal of making its community a better place to live. Since then, the organization has invested more than $2 million into the community by donating to almost every major Weyburn project. Highlights of the Club's work include financial and volunteer support for the first outdoor pool in Saskatchewan in 1931; every local minor sports program; the health care system; fire department rescue vehicles; playground equipment; swimming lessons; an indoor pool; a second rink ice surface; and a splash park at the Don Mitchell Tot Lot. From its humble beginnings more than 90 years ago, the Club was founded with the following aims: to promote the spirit of fraternalism among its members; to develop its members for better citizenship; and to contribute in any way which it deemed advisable to public welfare. It should come as no surprise then, that the Club's motto is, "We serve."

Launched in late 2013, this new award was created to recognize the dedicated service clubs and fraternal organizations that help improve Saskatchewan's quality of life by contributing to the province's communities. These groups are ineligible to receive group recognition under the other current provincial honours and awards programs.

Parading lights in downtown Weyburn ??? ??? ??? ????

Ironically enough, the 21st annual Parade of Lights saw 21 entries this season. The well-decorated floats lit up the streets of Weyburn on December 4. The Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the event, had a difficult time choosing a winner between all the entries.

"We can't thank everyone enough for the effort that goes into this event. The businesses and organizations that make these floats do this all on their time, in the cold, out of pure community pride," said Weyburn Chamber Manager Rochelle Wendt.

The parade saw the Prairie Sky Co-op float receive an

honourable mention for their "suite" ride for Santa.

Swayze Concrete took home the honour of first place.

The parade always finishes with the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce's float which reserves the only spot for Santa in the parade!

"The Chamber always organizes the Parade of Lights on the first Thursday of December as our way of helping everyone kick off the holiday season," explained Wendt. "In addition, we want to express great thanks to everyone who came out to watch the parade. The weather always shows the heartiness and civic pride the people of Weyburn and area have."

Bev Katschke displayed a table full of packed shoeboxes that will be donated to the Operation Christmas Child Program. Each year, Bev outdoes herself by increasing the number of boxes she packs. This year, Bev, along with her mother and sister, were able to secure enough items for 400 boxes.

What started just seven years ago with one shoebox, has now taken Bev Katschke to places she never imagined.

Bev became involved with Operation Christmas Child when she felt the need to help out, especially those who are much less fortunate than living in third world countries.

That brought her to the idea, to begin filling the shoeboxes with all the essential items the children need. These items include school supplies, toothbrushes, soap, hard candy and perhaps even a doll, ball or toy car. Each box typically costs between $20 to $30, which comes directly out of Katschke's pocket.

Over the years, her involvement with the Samaritans purse program has grown from one filled shoe box to a whopping 400 shoeboxes filled this year. With the growth of the program, Bev has picked up some help along the way. This year both Bev's mother and sister were directly involved in her drive and commitment to fill even more boxes than previous years. The three women purchased and stored items all year round that were used in the gift boxes. They were always on the lookout for bargains to be found, so that they could get even more "bang for their buck."

Three days of 'box packing' parties were hosted by Katschke, her mother and sister. Volunteers joined in on the fun at the Free Methodist Church to undertake the enormous task of packing each separate shoe box and ensuring all the appropriate items were in each one.

"Four hundred hopes, 400 dreams and 400 love blessings packed into 400 shoeboxes!

Yay!! Thank you God," exclaimed Bev. When asked why Bev has become so passionate about packing the shoeboxes for the children in need who receive them, she credited her trips with Samaritans Purse to being a life changing moment.

"I have had the wonderful opportunity to go on two OCC shoebox distribution trips with Samaritans Purse,� commented Katschke. “It is so fantastic to be a part of the shoebox miracle in action. To witness the joy, the hope, the great happiness that the simple shoebox gift brings to the child, is truly amazing. But to see that same joy, hope and love on the moms, dads and grandparents faces is too heartwarming for words. And to

know that the simple shoebox gift can do all this, it truly is one of God's little miracles!"

As the shoeboxes are filled and sent away, Katchske has already begun preparing for next year. She would like everyone to know that the same opportunity to participate in the program and travel abroad is available to anyone who is interested. Katschke considers it a real honor to be a part of something so special and that is why they are so passionate and will always continue to pack them.

What’s the complete cost?

By Helen Waller If you have kids, you probably have one. If you don't, you need to get one. The elf on the shelf.

A brilliant idea really. A little toy elf, that parents can buy to act as a sort of nanny-cam for Santa. Each night the elf flies back to Santa and reports on your child's behaviour, naughty or nice. Sort of like giving Santa a heads-up. The elf would say to Santa "Hey Boss, don't bother packing for the Klapak kids. Word is on the streets...they have been misbehaving."

It may not be a technique found in Parenting for Dummies, but it should be. Our elf is making it happen in our house. Vegetables are being eaten, bedtime is no longer a fight, and homework is getting done. Our house is full of magic and it's not even Christmas morning. I have heard there is some controversy surrounding using this elf as a way to get children to behave. Some parents think it may be too hard to discipline your child in January when the elf leaves. Some think it isn't a great idea to scare children into behaving. All I have to say is...you don't know what you're missing!

I mean, think of the possibilities. Tired of telling your kids they play too much Xbox? Well, guess who just landed on the power button? Too much junk food eating going on? Well, look who just landed on a bag of chips on the counter? This elf is a real problem solver. You just have to know how to use it. I am keeping mine around. It's like having Supernanny at our house. Perhaps I need to celebrate Ukrainian Christmas this year and keep the elf around a few weeks longer.

I think that this elf may just show up under our tree December 25 with his bags packed.

I have a seven-year-old boy in our house that has more respect for that little plush toy than he does for his parents combined. Not once has he talked back to that elf, let alone slam a door in his face. It's truly magic. I sure wish I had one for the teenagers in the house.

That's when I realized I already did. I call it the Sasktelf. This elf can appear anywhere, anytime, for any reason in a teenagers life to take their phone away and put it in the hands of their parents. The really great thing about this elf is that there are no rules for us to follow.

Kids talking back? Messy rooms? Their phone magically disappears from their hands right into yours. There is no need to wait until the evening for the little elf to fly to Sasktel and return home the next morning. The results are like Jello pudding - instant. In the blink of an eye, teenagers are cleaning their rooms, hugging their siblings and unloading the dishwasher while telling you how great you look.

A Christmas miracle, and best thing is, the Sasktelf is on call 24hours a day, 365 days a year!

By Linda Wegner Unless you are far more wealthy than I, finding the perfect gift is one thing but purchasing it might be quite another matter. As the mother of two wonderful sons, daughters-inlaw and three perfect (well, almost) granddaughters, I'd love to pay off their mortgages, buy the car or the boat of their dreams and send them all on exotic vacations but it's the B word that prohibits any such action. I'm talking about Budget.

Contrary to the messages of retailers, credit card companies and our internal or maternal urges, sometimes the best gift we can give (at least to ourselves and our households) is to be ruthless in our adherence to a budget. Nights of worry can be avoided by judicious spending so years ago I adopted the habit of putting away small amounts during the year to take the edge off restricted spending for gifts (Christmas, birthday, graduation or whatever). The monthly pension income is off limits.

Staying within self-imposed spending limits can sometimes be made easier with consultation. Since opposites attract, a spouse or partner may be able to serve that purpose; I've also found that taking a trusted friend along helps me think things through before flashing that colourful plastic rewards card.

This is also a good place to reference another list, this time a list of priorities. Will this lovely but very expensive gift affect my ability to give to those less fortunate? Will it mean substituting the holiday turkey with bologna? For some of us senior citizens, we dare not forget the costs that accompany aging. Because value isn't restricted to a bank account, giving way to impulsive buying can incur costs we neglected to calculate.

"Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls…Without counsel, plans go awry…." (Proverbs 15:22; 25:28).

Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord This is already week two of our Advent season, soon to be the third Sunday of Advent on the weekend, and the challenge of John the Baptist remains ever the clarion call. John the Baptist is identified by the prophet Isaiah as the Voice of one who cries out in the wilderness: "Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight the path of the Lord." Certainly not one to mince words, John called for a baptism of repentance, as people confessed their sins as they were baptized in the Jordan River. It was this same baptism of repentance that Jesus accepted, much to the consternation of even John himself, who felt it should be the other way around. Jesus' submission to John's baptism was another sign of His acceptance of our humanity, as evidenced in His birth at Bethlehem.

The mystery of Christ's Incarnation brings with it the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament, in ways that are truly surprising and astonishing because while the Messiah and Savior were expected, no one it would seem had anticipated that God would send His only begotten Son, the second Person of the Holy Trinity as that Messiah. How else do we account for the opposition and vehemence of the scribes and Pharisees to Jesus' claim to the Son of God, if there had been any inclination that the Messiah to come would in fact be the Son of God? This was beyond their greatest expectation as Jesus' claim to be whom He said went against their strict monotheism.

Our Advent preparation for the celebration of Christ's coming in the flesh through His birth at Bethlehem challenges us to heed the message of John the Baptist's call to repentance and conversion. We can do no less than what this solitary voice whose whole life and ministry was to point to the coming Messiah if we take seriously any preparation of our hearts for the coming of Christ. God knows how devious and shallow our hearts can be at times, and there is much that the Lord wants to remove from our hearts so that He might make His ways in us straight, leveling the mountains of our pride and filling in the valleys of our self-indulgence. Too often we have failed to respond with the same compassion and generosity that Christ's love challenge us to have for others, as He simply invites us to love and to forgive as He has loved and forgiven us. The more we are ready to receive the least of our brothers and sisters, then the more we can say that our hearts are prepared to receive Him who comes as our Savior and Redeemer. "Come, Lord Jesus, come."

Naturopath Clinic home to new technology in cancer care The Naturopath Clinic, located at 138 First Street N.E. in Weyburn, has been operating for three years under the guidance of Dr. Toby Bridgman. Dr. Bridgman has been practicing naturopathic medicine for six years and within the clinic, treats issues such as hormonal and digestive concerns, pain management, and lack of energy. He uses acupuncture, intravenous and injection therapies, nutritional supplements and other natural medicines to help his patients.

Dr. Bridgman has a special interest in cancer and has spent significant time working with patients with cancer. He offers current

naturopathic medical treatments to treat patients afflicted with this disease. One of these treatments is referred to as "loco-regional hyperthermia". This treatment is the latest available at the clinic, with the arrival of a new hyperthermia machine, just over two weeks ago. This treatment can be used in conjunction with chemotherapy and/or radiation, as a supplement for cancer patients.

The use of hyperthermia can be defined as the targeted application of heat energy in the treatment of diseases. The use of hyperthermia as a form of therapy for cancer patients was first documented by Hippocrates

in the treatment of breast tumors. Only at the beginning of the 19th century was it made possible to achieve this through electromagnetic fields.

Results of recent studies have shown that a combination of hyperthermia and chemotherapy has significantly stronger effects than chemotherapy alone. Similar results were concluded with the combination of the treatment when used alongside radiation.

Before and after treatments, different settings can be both made, controlled or modified through the computer system attached to the machine. The system records and stores all of the patient's data during and after the process.

The machine was made possible throughout the generosity of the Ambrose family, who believe that residents of Saskatchewan should benefit from the latest technology. This technology sees patients travelling as far as, but not limited to: Berlin, Thailand, Germany, Switzerland, Korea and Greece to receive the local regional hyperthermia treatment.

Currently there are 150 machines in use across the world and Weyburn is home to the third one in all of North America.

Police will be conducting frequent checks during the holiday season On December 8, in the early morning hours, the Weyburn Police Service received a direct call from a 28 year-old female victim about an assault in progress at her residence. Although the residence was outside of city limits, due to the urgency of the matter, members of the Weyburn Police Service responded. Upon arrival, a 43 year-old male person was found to have suffered significant injuries and was transported by EMS to the Weyburn General Hospital.

A 35 year-old male was taken into custody without incident at the scene. Weyburn Police members remained on-scene until the RCMP arrived and are assisting in the investigation.

On December 7, the Weyburn Police Service received a report regarding the sexual exploitation of a 17 year-old female. Subsequent investigation revealed that a 40 year-old male was exercising undue influence over the 17 year-old victim in exchange for sexual services.

The matter is still under investigation. Neither the suspect nor the victim are from Weyburn.

On December 6, as a result of a traffic stop, a 46 year-old male was charged with driving while suspended and driving an unregistered vehicle. This was the second such incident for the accused in recent weeks. The vehicle was seized and impounded

On December 5, the Weyburn Police Service received a call from a local taxi company about an unruly passenger. As a result of police involvement a 21 yearold female was arrested at the scene and lodged in cells until sober. No charges will be laid.

On December 4, the Weyburn Police Service was dispatched to a report of a fight at a local pub. Involved

was a 24 year-old male suspect and a 26 year-old male victim. The victim did not wish to provide further information making the laying of charges difficult. The matter did not require further police intervention.

Also on December 4, the Weyburn Police Service were called to a local hotel regarding a disturbance in the lobby. A 29 year-old male was upset at the services being offered by the hotel. The

suspect, a hotel guest, was escorted to his room with no further need for police involvement.

Further, on December 4, the Weyburn Police Service received a report from a male person fearing for his safety.

The investigation determined that the person was a user of crystal meth and may have been suffering a delusional episode. He was assisted to the extent possible.

December, the Weyburn Police Service Members will be out in full force conducting drinking and driving enforcement checks. Make sure if you are going to be at a function and will be consuming alcohol that you make arrangements for a safe ride home.

With the onset of the winter season and the snow that comes with it, the Weyburn Police Service would like to remind residents of the pro-

visions of the Traffic Bylaw relating to the parking of vehicles on City Streets. The Bylaw allows vehicles to be parked for a maximum of 48 hours at a time. Vehicles parked over the 48 hours are subject to being issued a parking ticket and to being towed. If the vehicle is so parked and is a hazard or an impediment to street maintenance, including snow removal, it will be seized and towed.

Lighting up faces

Weyburn to host 2016 Esso Cup The 2014 Esso Cup championship team, the Weyburn Gold Wings, will serve as the host team for the 2016 Esso Cup. The national AAA Midget Female tournament featuring six teams, will be hosted by Weyburn from April 19-25, 2016.

The Saskatchewan Hockey Association verified the announcement on December 8, after Hockey Canada made their decision on the weekend.

Weyburn Fire Department volunteer fireman, Joe Cayen, hands out goodies to Noah Clark during the 21st annual Parade of Lights on December 4.

Weyburn Comp Open houses set Students of the Month to discuss twinning of hwys. #39 and #6 Finally, the time has come that the Minister of Highways' staff are having Open Houses to discuss the route that the twinned highway will take from Regina to Estevan. They hope by next spring to have a line chosen on the map.

Meetings have already started with landowners/ business owners and home owners in the affected areas.

Everyone is invited to these Open Houses which will take place in Milestone, Weyburn and Midale. They will have maps with routes or options for people to look at and people on hand who will answer any questions about the project.

The come and go meetings will take place on Monday, December 15 in Milestone at the Legion on Main Street from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.; in Weyburn on Wednesday, December 17 at the Travelodge from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.; and Thursday, December 18 in Midale at the 39ers Club on Main Street from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
