Poltava Ensemble set to perform March 1 at Cugnet Centre The Weyburn Concert Series has secured the highly acclaimed performance group, the Poltava Ensemble, to perform March 1 at 2:00 p.m. in the Cugnet Centre. The Poltava Ensemble of Song, Music and Dance is a 50 member group of Ukrainian dancers, musicians and singers.

The ensemble includes both men and women who have a ver y high level of technical training in Ukrainian dance, as well as other dance genres such as classical and folk. The ensemble's roots in Saskatchewan began in 1922 with the formation of a children's string orchestra. It has grown notably over the years to now include dancers, singers and musicians.

The ensembles' home base is in Regina, however, they have travelled the world performing at such venues as Drummondville World Festival and Walt Disney World (Florida). They have also taken three international trips to the Ukraine and the famous Folklore Festival in Yalta on the Black Sea.

Performers in the ensemble are able to partake in such festivals after years of training at the Poltava School of Performing Arts in Regina.

Students can begin training at the young age of three. Dancers complete seven levels of training before becoming part of the ensemble.

The current ensemble features dancers ranging in age from 15 to 30, while orchestra members range in age from 18 to 80.

The ensemble would typically practice at least three times a week, but with a show on the horizon members are spending as many as five nights a week polishing their act.

Attendees are sure to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment by such a critically acclaimed and well travelled ensemble. The ensemble will bring life to the rich heritage of Ukrainian folk music. The orchestra is comprised of strings, winds, brass, key-

board and percussion.

The most unique aspect of this particular ensemble is that all the music performed is live entertainment. It can be noted that the Poltava Ensemble is the only group of its' kind that uses live music for the entirety of the show. There is no other group in Saskatchewan like this, and very few in Canada.

The ensemble has a valued reputation of not only displaying the best of

Ukrainian culture, but also incorporating the traditions of those who border with Ukraine such as Russia and Moldova. The afternoon promises to be a multicultural event that celebrates the beauty of the human spirit.

Jaren Bell secured the first place position this year at the James Weir People’s Choice awards with her five piece metal art work. Bell placed second in last year’s competition with her unique talent. Custom one-of-a-kind pieces are available through her business, Iron Maidens Artwork.

James Weir exhibit winners announced Friends, family and participating artists of the James Weir People Choice Exhibit gathered at the Allie Griffin Art Gallery on February 12 to celebrate.

The reception and gala marked the finale of the James Weir People's Choice Exhibit. The well-attended gala, which left standing room only, began with refreshments including wine, juice and coffee as well as snacks including baking, cheeses and fruits.

Benjamin Sidloski played the piano for all to enjoy before the commencement of the official award ceremony.

Ron Ror, curator for the Weyburn Arts Council, began the evening by acknowledging and thanking Lois Olson, who has been a part of the competition since it began several years ago. In appreciation for all her work as a board member, Olson was presented with a bouquet of flowers.

The exhibit, which had been open for voting for several weeks prior to the reception, saw a record number of ballots being cast this year.

Over 500 ballots determined the winners.

Jaren Bell, took home the coveted first prize with her metal art work. It didn't see her hands for too long, as her daughter, Jaci, proudly carried the award for her.

Receiving second place for her painting of the Northern Lights, was Dorothy Whitell. Third place went to Heather van der Breggen, a familiar face on the art scene.

In addition to the top three artists being awarded with trophies, seven runners-up were given honourable mention.

They included Christopher Borschowa, Jo Ann Fahlman, Donn Morton, Travis Paxman, Deanne PierceColbow, Patti Shaw and Rickee-Lee Webster.

At the conclusion of the evening, Ron Ror extended an invitation to all to join the Weyburn Arts Council Board. As well, he reminded attendees that the deadline of April 10 for the art adjudication competition is fast approaching. Letter to the Editor Dear Editor: As we have seen in Canada, the international jihadist movement has declared war and Canadians are being targeted by these terrorists simply because they hate our society and the values it represents.

One only need to look back over the past several weeks at the terrorist attacks in Ottawa and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu as well as attacks abroad in Australia and Paris, to see that the threat of radical Islamic extremism is a very real threat.

These threats require a strong response.

That is why, under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, our Conservative Government took action and brought forward the Protection of Canada from Terrorists Act and Anti-terrorism Act 2015 that takes steps to protect Canadians against jihadi terrorists who seek to destroy the very principles that make Canada the best country in the world to live.

As Prime Minister Harper clearly said, our Government rejects the argument that every time we talk about security, our freedoms are threatened. Canadians understand that their freedom and security go hand in hand. Canadians expect us to protect both, and there are protections in this legislation to do exactly that.

The fundamental fact is that our police and national security agencies are working to protect our rights and our freedoms, and it is jihadi terrorists who endanger our security and who would take away our freedoms.

Providing national security agencies with new tools will ensure that gaps in sharing information about suspected terrorists does not limit their ability to prevent attacks on Canada or against Canadians.

We as politicians do not enforce the law, but we have the duty to make sure that law enforcement has the necessary tools to keep Canadians safe.

We will continue to do just that.

Weyburn Police lay several charges of impaired driving On February 14, an officer stopped a vehicle that was driving down the middle of a street.

The driver smelled of beverage alcohol and a roadside breath demand was made which resulted in a fail reading. The 34 year-old male was arrested for impaired driving and taken to Weyburn police station. After numerous attempts to obtain breath samples, the man was charged with refusal and impaired driving.

Also on February 14, police received a call about a vehicle stuck in the ditch on Highway 39. The male was reportedly passed out and had beer in his truck. Officers attended and found a 43 year-old male passed out with a beer in his hand. He was arrested and taken to Weyburn police station. He provided breath samples and was subsequently charged with care and control of a vehicle while impaired and care and control of a vehicle while over .08.

On February 13, police responded to a fight at a local pub. The incident was over when they arrived and no charges were laid.

Also on February 13, two youths stole a package off of the front step of a residence. They ran to the corner and ripped the package open and fled the area. The incident is under investigation.

Further on February 13, police responded to a driving complaint in the south hill area.

An 18 year-old male was located and warned about his driving actions.

Also on February 13, police responded to a local hotel to deal with issues between a landlord and tenant. There was a dispute about the condition of the suite and how belongings were removed. The incident was resolved peacefully and no charges were laid.

On February 12, police received a complaint of mischief to a female's apartment. While the 24 year-old female was out of town her apartment and belongings were damaged by her boyfriend. He has not been seen since the damage was done. The incident is under investigation.

Also on February 12, police responded to a domestic in the south area of Weyburn. A 41 year-old male and a 26 year-old female were locked in a dispute which could not be resolved.

The male left the residence and went to a friend's home. The female attended the friend's house and police were called a second time. The female was driven home and advised if there were any future complaints that she would be charged.

On February 11, police received a complaint of an erratic driver approaching Weyburn on Highway 39. The vehicle was located at a local restaurant. The driver was warned about his actions.

On February 10, police responded to a hit and run accident in the 1700 block of Eaglesham Avenue. The suspect vehicle appeared to have lost control and collided with a parked vehicle. The parked vehicle was pushed into a second vehicle and subsequently into a third.

Witness statements and photographs were taken. The accident is under investigation.

Also on February 10, police received a complaint about an erratic driver travelling towards Weyburn on Highway 39. An officer located the suspect vehicle and warned him about his driving actions. No drugs or alcohol were involved.

On February 9, an officer did a routine traffic stop on a 20 year-old female. The driver was believed to be driving while under the influence of alcohol and a roadside breath demand was made. As a result she was given a three day license suspension.

Also on February 9, an 81 year-old male reported that he'd been the victim of a credit card fraud. Several transactions were reimbursed through his bank while the remainder were not, as too much time had gone by.

Further on February 9, an officer on patrol attempted to stop a vehicle suspected of driving erratically. The emergency lights were activated and the vehicle fled, the traffic stop was immediately terminated in consideration of the public's safety. Police are investigating the incident and charges are pending.

Also on February 9, a 33 year-old male attended Weyburn police station regarding some concerning text messages, police are investigating.

ROGAL - Aileen Marjorie (Peggy) Rogal died peacefully at the Weyburn General Hospital February 14th, 2015. Peggy was born in Farnborough, Hampshire, UK August 26th, 1918 to Laura Babbington (Willis) and Sidney Babbington.

Mum attended school in Farnborough and was involved in sports, excelling and winning awards, especially in "Stool Ball". During WWII, Mum was employed at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) in Aldershot, manufacturing munitions for the war effort. It was during this time in her life when she met Private Mike Rogal of the South Saskatchewan Regiment at a dance in Farnborough. After a few months courtship, they were married in Farnborough in March 1941. Their first child, daughter Ann, was born in Farnborough and in May 1944 Mum travelled with Ann to Canada on the Duchess of Bedford, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax.

They travelled by train to Weyburn while they awaited Dad's return from the war. Mum spent the balance of her life in Weyburn, where Michael was born, followed

by Lauren.

Mum was an avid square-dancer in the 1970's enjoying that activity for several years. She was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, enjoying her involvement in Legion activities and cherishing the friendships she developed. Another favourite involvement was with the War Bride's Association for many years and again she cherished her fellow War Bride friends. Many activities and gettogethers were enjoyed by this lively group of women!

Canvassing for various charities, being a regular blood donor, and volunteering for the Weyburn Union Hospital Auxiliary Canteen every Wednesday for many years were other activities she enjoyed.

From the day Mum arrived in Weyburn, she began attending All Saint's Anglican Church, becoming very involved in the Women's Auxiliary, later known as the Anglican Church Women, holding various offices within this organization. She was a loyal member of the Altar Guild for decades, again enjoying the friendships she made within her church family.

Following the death of Mike in 1977, Mum eventually began taking tours throughout Canada and the northern U.S. which she thoroughly enjoyed. She returned to England twice prior to Mike's death and twice following. She always maintained, though, that Canada was her home and that she was here to stay.

Mum was mainly a "stay-at-home Mum", but she was employed at the Weyburn Special Care Home on 5th Street for seven years, enjoying not only the job and her co-workers but also the residents.

Mum was an excellent cook and many meals were enjoyed by family and friends. She cooked Christmas Dinner well into her 80's, her turkey always cooked to perfection, along with all the trimmings. No one in our family has been able to duplicate Mum's Christmas turkey!

Mum was predeceased by her loving husband, Mike, parents Laura and Sidney, brother Jack, sister Betty, sister-in-law Vicky, brothers-in-law Walter, Stan, Joe and Frank.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Ann Crossland (Paul); Michael Rogal (Charlotte); Lauren Kievits (Dave). Her grandchildren: Doug Wilson (Francine); Michael Rogal (Jen); Ken Rogal (Lisa); Kara Rogal (Jeremy); Wayne Vande Velde (Lisa); Casey Kievits (Stephanie); Kelly Prochinsky (Mike). Great Grandchildren: Nicole Wilson; Braxton Rogal; MacKenzie and Morgann Rogal; Brandon, Kurtis and Layne Vande Velde; Nyla and Michael Prochinsky; Emersyn Kievits.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn. The funeral took place at All Saint's Anglican Church in Weyburn with The Rev. Brian Woods officiating, assisted by Debbie Hubick, on Tuesday, February 17th at 2 p.m.

Donations in memory of Mum may be made to All Saint's Anglican Church or The Royal Canadian Legion, Weyburn Branch.

You CAN teach an "old dog" new tricks And the Earth moved

By Helen Waller You know the age-old saying. It's been around for years.

You CAN'T teach an old dog new tricks. Well, I beg to differ. You can and I did. My version is more of a modern day twist on the saying and it goes like this. You can teach an "old grandpa" to text.

Just as those old wise dogs do, he sat back and watched.

He has been monitoring the situation for a while now. Sitting quietly, watching his grandkids, as young as the age of three, do things like play games, listen to music and watch movies on the computer, iPad and the iPhone. Nothing that they were doing particularly interested him enough to want the latest technology... but that's when it hit him. He realized you could check the weather on those devices. (He is a farmer. I will say no more.)

No longer would he have to wait for the lunch hour news or the hourly updates on the radio. Twenty-four hours a day, he could have access to information that he wanted at his fingertips. He was a little hesitant about braving this new technology. I mean, this man has seen a lot in his lifetime. He literally walked to school (ironically enough as I write this article I text him to confirm that information and it was two miles, indeed). He also texted me back a few minutes later to let me know that he rode a bike and a horse also. (Looks like he is catching on to this texting thing). There were only two things this "old grandpa" needed. To fetch a willingness to try and an iphone. So, we headed to the local Sasktel dealer and got him all geared up. He left there with a phone, case and a look of fear in his eyes. (Reminded me of the look on my puppy’s face when a new dog enters the park).

Upon arrival of the newest addition to the family, excitement was in the air. Everyone had opinions, suggestions and ideas of what best to do with Grandpa’s new baby, his iPhone. I decided that it was best to take it one step at a time. The two first steps were to learn how to answer/make a call and to learn how to send/receive a text message. To everyone’s surprise, he caught on a lot quicker than we expected. It was entertaining to see the looks on the grandkid’s faces as their Grandpa learned something new. (I imagine it is the same for Grandparents and vice versa). So it seems as though the age-old saying simply isn't relevant in this case. The "old grandpa" has learned to text, and that is just the beginning. I am not sure what can of worms we opened because the other morning the "old dog" showed up at our breakfast table unsure of what to do with the money he had earned in the pool game the kids had taught him to play online. The children showed him how to spend his collection of coins in the game and I had to laugh. You really are never to old to learn new tricks.

Anyone can do anything if they really want to. All you need is a desire to do so, and a daughter-in-law willing to teach you.

By Linda Wegner According to news reports, it hit shortly after 8:00 PM last evening, Pacific Daylight Time, and was centred just forty-seven kilometres (approximately thirty miles) east southeast of where I live. It, being an earthquake, clocked in at 3.5 and some say it was followed by a second, less weighty version. That's what I was told but I didn't feel a thing.

Earthquakes are a part of life for us Pacific Coast dwellers and the arrival of the impending "big one" is a daily possibility. In my books, all our bragging about warm weather, blooming flowers and mini-winters is muted by the reality of waiting for an earthquake that would, according to specialists, "rip Vancouver Island wide open".

According to Earthquake Seismologist, Dr. John Cassidy: "During the past 30 days there have been nearly 100 earthquakes in southwest British Columbia so every day we have these small earthquakes happening all around us." They are, he noted, a "powerful reminder that we live in an active earthquake zone". (http://globalnews.ca/news/1831562/ 3-5-magnitude-earthquake-hits-vancouvers-coast/) Although I don't advocate living in a state of perpetual fear, there's something comforting about knowing that a minimum three day supply of water, canned goods, prescribed medications, and warm blankets are a few of the essentials packed into a preparedness kit.

Our city emergency co-ordinator certainly pushes that message and every shaking is a reminder that our lack of prairie blizzards doesn't make us immune to treacherous weather.

Trouble is, the message is clear and often sounded but how many bother to heed the warning. Too many times we do the same with Jesus' call to follow Him. By either deliberately or carelessly refusing to respond to His love, we miss out on the grace He offers.

"I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness."

It's a love worth accepting!

Welcome to Lent!

People do weird things in Lent. They stuff themselves at Pancake Suppers before Lent starts, put a cross with ashes on their foreheadson Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, and decide what they're giving up for the next 40 weekdays until the Saturday before Easter. And on Easter Sunday they celebrate His resurrection to life. It all must seem pretty weird to those who are not Christian, and have no idea what all this is about!

A CBC radio report this week told of folk from Holy Trinity Church, next door to downtown Eaton Centre, out on the busy sidewalks, offering "Ashes for Lent" to people walking by last Ash Wednesday. Church- goers were happy to receive the sign, others totally confused by what was being offered, rushed on by. But some wanted both ashes and explanation that they remind us of our mortality-that we are but dust and to dust we will return, but that there is hope beyond our physical mortality.

Lent is preparation time, as we look towards Easter, the most important day of the Christian's year. Easter is the oldest celebration of the church. Every Sunday is a little Easter, when we celebrate Jesus' resurrection. Lent, then is the 40 days, not counting the 6 Sundays, from Ash Wednesday to the Satur- day before Easter. "Lent" comes from the word "Lengthen" because, in this part of the world, Lent occurs when days are lengthening after the short, dark days of winter.

For at least the first two centuries, the focus was on Easter Day, and Lent was not celebrated. Nor, did they did not celebrate Good Friday as we do today. Christians met for worship on Saturday at 6PM and continued fasting, praying & meditating throughout the night until about 3AM on Sunday, when they celebrated Holy Communion. Later, fasting was extended to include Friday, 40 hours in which to remem-ber the time Jesus' body had lain in the tomb. Later still, fasting was extended to include all of Holy week. It wasn't until the year 600 that the fast became 40 days prior to Easter, not including Sundays. It was a time to remember Jesus' 40 days spent in the wilderness preparing for his public ministry.

Lent was the final preparation time for those seeking church membership by baptism at Easter. Soon other church members began to undertake 40 days of penitence and fasting while they reflected upon their own baptismal vows. Lent was and is a time of preparing our hearts to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ anew.

From this noble purpose, what has Lent become? A time when for giving up some very peripheral things -- chocolates, or cookies. Or maybe we don't talk about giving up anything any more. What should Lent be to us today?--- It should be a time when we do serious business with the things which get between us and our God--- time for serious wrestling with the powers which either do or want to control us.Welcome to Lent!

PeeWee Tier 1 Young Fellows bring home the gold The PeeWee 1 Young Fellows travelled to Manitoba February 1315 for the Brandon Tournament of Champions. The first game against the Winnipeg Railcats was a 6-6 tie. They swept Melfort in the next game with a score of 7-0. The Young Fellows then crossed over to play the A semi-final against Tisdale, who is currently the top team in Northern Saskatchewan. They secured their spot in the A side final with a 4-2 finish over Tisdale. The boys played Warman in the gold medal game and finished the weekend with a 6-2 win and brought home the gold medal.

Members of the team include: Blake Anderson, Kyle Bochek, Sam Chittenden, Tyler Domes, Matthew Dutchak, Drew Englot, Rylan Erb, Ethan Ernst, Matthew Hutt, Steven Kesslering, Jordan Muhr, Nolan Pankratz, Jonah Regier, Zac Robins, Luke Schaeffer, Riley Skarbon and Gage Tyhy. Letter to the Editor

Thoughts on the McLeod Basketball series I attended the 1st two games in Weyburn at the Cugnet Centre. I asked if there was a program. Two young ladies at the door replied no. I asked if it was possible to find a piece of paper and write down names and numbers of Weyburn. She said yes and I wouldn't have to come back to the door, she would find me, which she did. Many thanks. Between games, I inquired of a parent and a faculty member when we could expect the Eagle logo, etc. to be put on the walls as in the old gym. Reply was wouldn't happen as it was a convention centre. Weyburn won both games. Fast forward to Wed., Feb. 11. Travelled to Estevan for the completion of the series.

Upon entering the Estevan gym, I was greeted by two students. One handed out a program. Outside cover McLeod Series Final Round 2015. Inside two pages contained team rosters, numbers, grades and heights. Last page contained info on McLeod series 80 yrs. old, etc. With credit going to Bob King. (Our Bob King) Last portion of the page thanked all those involved in the tourney. The ticket received at the door went into a draw. Approx. 15-20

draws throughout the evening. Grand Prize MP3 player other prizes water bottles, Tim's cards, etc. The games were covered by Access 7. All baskets announced over loud speaker.

The Estevan Comp band was present in the stands, right behind the Weyburn bench. They not only entertained at ½ time and between games but every time Weyburn took a time out.

Advantage Estevan. The Estevan cheerleaders were present to entertain. I asked

a Weyburn student why Weyburn had no cheerleaders in Weyburn or Estevan.

I was told the Weyburn Cheerleaders only entertained at football games.

The reason for writing this letter is to give Estevan full marks for a job well done.

To Weyburn, if we want to have a 1st class organization and school spirit, we had better take a lesson from Estevan and pull up our sox for next year.

Beavers announce appointment of another assistant coach

A week after announcing that Phil Curtis is returning for his third season as head coach and the signing of Joe Sergent as an assistant Coach, the Beavers have added another piece to their coaching staff.

Cory Curtis, Phil's brother, will also joining the Beavers as an assistant coach.

A 5-year senior and graduate of the Vancouver Island Baseball Institute (VIBI), Cory is currently in his first season as an assistant coach there.

Cory will primarily serve as a bullpen coach and help out on the bench for the Beavers, but he is also going to be an important part of the Beavers' community programs such as their P&H sponsored school program and minor ball camps and clinics.

Weyburn Beavers and Parrish & Heimbecker team up The boys of summer will soon be back in Weyburn eager to play ball. This year, the Weyburn Beavers of the WMBL are excited to announce that for a second year Parrish & Heimbecker will be the official sponsor of their in-school "Giving Back" program for the K9 schools in Weyburn. The purpose and the goal of the program is to share knowledge about the game and the skills of baseball with the students. The program also provides an opportunity to share the players' cultural experiences and to build a positive, successful relationship within the community.

The Beavers, through their sponsorship with Parrish & Heimbecker, are also thrilled to host a school night to celebrate the schools, the students, and the players' who participate in the program. This year the school night will be on June 23. On that night, they are planning to give away two tablets - one tablet for a student and the other tablet for the school that the winning student attends. So, as the season nears, the Beavers will be gearing up to build on last season's successes and continue building on "Giving Back to Schools."

Local wrestlers place well On February 13 and 14, six members of the Weyburn Comp Eagles Wrestling team competed in a tournament in Moose Jaw. The results are as follows: Katelyn Frankin (Female 58-62kg) - 2nd place; Aaron Hemphill (Male 44-48kg) - 2nd place; Carter Barrett (Male 5659kg) - 4th place; Tyler Fleming (Male 60-61kg) - 3rd place; Braydon Roberts (Male 6264kg) - 4th place; and Ryan Verbeem (Male 68-69kg) - 4th place.

On February 15, 11 members of the Weyburn Cobra Wrestling Club attended the South Sask Open in Moose Jaw. The results are as follows: Raiden Kirlay (Freshie Male 30-31kg) 1st place; Carver Heutis (Novice Male 26kg) - 4th place; Trotter Drake (Novice Male 26kg) 3rd place; Cale Mohan (Novice Male 27-29kg) - 1st place; Billy Franklin (Novice Male 3335kg) - 2nd place; Danny Fortune (Novice Male 41-48kg) - 2nd place; Halen Drake (Pee Wee Male 26-31kg) - 2nd place; Eric Fleming (PeeWee Male 35kg) -1st place; Kristen Foutune (PeeWee Female 49-51kg) - 2nd place; Makena Ricard (PeeWee Female 62-68kg) - 2nd place, and Dawson Runge (Bantam Male 31-35kg) - 2nd place.

Watching it slide Thursday nights are open league nights at the Weyburn Curling Club. These curlers enjoyed a night of fun and companionship while participating in one of Canada’s favourite winter sports.

In last week’s edition of Weyburn This Week, it was erroneously reported that the Weyburn DC Red Wings took the gold medal at a two day home tournament on February 7 and 8.

The weekend actually consisted of two separate one day tournaments.

The correct results are as follows: the Weyburn DC Gold Wings went undefeated during the Saturday tournament, defeating the Estevan Stars 4-3, the Estevan Leafs 4-3 and the Weyburn DC Whalers 5-3. The DC Red Wings played in the second tournament, held Sunday, and took the A final.
