Firefighters from Estevan, Rouleau, Sedley, Yellow Grass and Weyburn spent a full day at the local fire hall, with classroom work in the morning and a hands-on training tactical mission in the afternoon.

Leko was one of several recipients of an award at the annual SWF convention awards banquet held at the Cugnet Centre on February 21.

The 86th Annual Saskatchewan Wildlife Federations Convention was held in Weyburn on February 19 - 21.

This was the first time that Weyburn has hosted the three day event. The Cugnet Centre provided the perfect location for the nearly 300 members of the SWF from

across the province to gather.

The full schedule included presentations, keynote addresses, open question periods, reports, fundraising, and an awards banquet.

The SWF Awards and Presentations banquet, which was held on Saturday evening, concluded the weekend.

The catered banquet was followed by the presentations and awards. Darrell Crabbe served as the emcee for the evening. Presentations were given for Best Resolution, Photography (Wildlife & Scenery), Clayton Young Memorial Awards, Ed Begin Conservation Project Award, Lorne Topley Memorial Stewardship Award, Resource Management Conser vation Award and the Gordon Lund Memorial Conservation Award.

To finish off the evening, attendees enjoyed an evening of DJ and karaoke entertainment.

According to the president of the Weyburn Wildlife Federation, Tim Kerslake, the convention had a great response. Delegates enjoyed the food, the Cugnet Centre as a location for the convention and hospitality of the Travelodge hotel.

Weyburn Comp School news February 23 saw the resumption of classes and other activities at WCS. In sports, the junior boys were in a tournament in Stoughton, the senior boys in Moose Jaw and the senior girls have games set in Caronport on February 28.

WCS hosted the South East District boys and mixed curling playoffs Tuesday and Wednesday at the Weyburn Curling Club.

The Weyburn Concert Series has the Regina group the "Poltava Dancers" performing March 1 at 2:00 p.m. in the Cugnet Centre.

There is also a Ukrainian lunch from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Colleen Weimer Hall prior to the Concert series performance.

It is not included as part of the admission to the concert but you can pick up tickets for the lunch at Superior Office Products.

A public meeting on "Child Exploitation" will be held in the Cugnet Centre on March 2 at 7:00 p.m.

Grad photo retakes are April 2.

There is a Grade Nine Night for all parents and students coming over to WCS this fall on March 4 at 7:00 p.m. Everyone that this involves is invited to attend.

Weyburn Police deal with assault, theft and fraud On February 22, at about 7:15 a.m., the Weyburn Police Service received a call from staff at a local hotel. Two males had been fighting and one was found laying injured in the hotel corridor. Upon police arrival, both combatants were taken to the Weyburn hospital where each refused treatment. A 21 year-old male was lodged in cells and held until sober. A 29 year-old male was returned to his hotel room.

Neither individual would provide evidence against the other and no independent witnesses could be found.

On February 21, a Weyburn resident reported that an elderly family member had received a 'grandparent scam' telephone call. The caller said that he was her nephew and was in trouble and needed money. The female did not provide any money and terminated the call. Once again we would like to reinforce that this is the correct action in these types of calls. If they are legitimate, the caller will gladly provide call-back information which you can confirm through your police department.

Also on February 21, the Weyburn Police responded to a report of a traffic collision on 11th Street at East Avenue.

An investigation revealed that the vehicle travelling north on 11th Street failed to yield the right-of-way resulting in a collision with a vehicle travelling west on East Avenue. No one was injured in the collision. The northbound vehicle had to be towed from the scene.

On February 19, the Weyburn PS responded to a local apartment regarding a complaint of an assault. Upon arrival, police found that a 36 year-old male had been as-

saulted by his 23 year-old girlfriend. As well, the girlfriend damaged the apartment door. The suspect was located a short time later and arrested for the assault. She was released on conditions not to contact the victim. Alcohol was a contributing factor for both the suspect and the victim.

On February 18, the Weyburn PS received a call regarding a suspicious male in the downtown core selling televisions from his vehicle. A subsequent check revealed that there was no criminal activity, but the person did not have a city business license. He was advised to stop selling items until he obtained a license.

On February 17, a Weyburn resident received an email telling him that he was due in court and that he should bring a number of personal papers. The person believed the email to be fraudulent and did not open any attachments or otherwise respond to the matter. We wish to confirm that this is the best course of action to take. If ever in doubt do not open any strange or unsolicited email attachments or provide personal identifying information over email.

Also on February 17, the Weyburn PS were dispatched to an apartment building regarding a male person causing a disturbance. Upon arrival, police found the person had left the scene. They were able to identify this person and shortly after located and arrested the 34 year-old male for being intoxicated. He was lodged in cells until sober.

On February 16, the Weyburn PS were called to a report of a disturbance at a local apartment. Upon arrival they learned that the 26 year-old female suspect had already left.

Law enforcement issue close to 400 intersection-related tickets in January Close to 400 motorists were ticketed during January's traffic safety spotlight on intersection safety.

Saskatchewan police issued 383 intersection-related tickets, including: • 220 tickets for disobeying traffic lights • 95 tickets for failing to stop/proceeding from a stop sign before safe • 65 tickets for failing to yield the right of way • 3 tickets for failing to yield to a pedestrian In addition, there were 806 offences for speeding/ aggressive driving, 90 impaired driving-related offences, 211 offences for distracted driving (160 of those for cellphone use), and 425 occupant restraint violations

Law enforcement continue to watch for distracted driving throughout February.

The disturbance was over clothing and personal items.

Also on February 16, while on routine patrol, the police came across a vehicle parked in an area it should not have been. When checked, the 17 year-old female driver was found to have open liquor in the vehicle. A further check revealed that she had an outstanding arrest warrant.

NOTE: The Weyburn PS are investigating a report of a theft of tools from a construction site on Johnston Drive.

Measles Immunization in Saskatchewan The recent View from the Desk of the CEO about protecting yourself from measles provided information on the Canadian guidelines for immunization on the website of the Public Health Agency of Canada. Each province has slightly different policies, and the bullets below summarize current Saskatchewan policy related to measles vaccine: • Make sure your children are up to date, in the Saskatchewan immunization schedule, children receive 2 (two) doses of measles containing vaccine at 12 months and 18 months.

• Adults born in 1970 or more recently are eligible for 2 (two) doses of measles containing vaccine. International travelers who were born between 1950 and 1970 are also eligible for one dose of measles vaccine unless they remember being vaccinated, have had measles disease in the past, or a blood test to show they are protected.

• There is no current recommendation to immunize children early going to the US. In countries where there is particularly high risk during outbreaks, infants can be immunized between 6 and 12 months with an extra (third) dose of measles containing vaccine. This does not apply to the US or the Americas generally, where, despite the recent US cases, the rates of disease are generally low.

Opposites attract

Discover your passion

By Helen Waller I was having coffee with my husband the other morning.

It was the morning of our 15th wedding anniversary. Fifteen years already? I couldn't wrap my mind around it. It was a startling realization that all that time had passed, considering I still feel as though I am in my early twenties. We got to talking about the first day he moved in. He showed up with all his life’s belongings in two boxes and one garment bag. You should have seen the look on my face. I mean, this man was organized. Everything was packed neatly and his clothes were on hangers and in a garment bag. I had never seen anything like it. I had grown up with two rambunctious brothers and believe me when I tell you that the age-old question "Were you raised in a barn?" may just of been invented by my mother.

So, I found it quite endearing (we were just newlyweds after all) that my husband was so neat and tidy. Not only was he not going to make a mess in my house, he sealed the deal with the fact that he did not even use up his half of the closest space I had saved for him. A man after a woman's heart. The rest is history or so they say, but in our case "opposites attract" seemed more fitting.

To give you an idea of how we both approached the idea of living together, I'd like to compare our different attitudes to a few well-known Adam Sandler movies. I was the sort of a "Just Go with It" kind-of-gal and my husband was more of a "Don't Mess With The Zohan" kind-of-guy. We were and still are complete polar opposites. For the 15 years we have been married this has pretty much stayed the same.

That morning, as we had coffee, we had to laugh about it. I still am the kind of gal who worries about the dishes AFTER the guests leave and he is still the kind of guy who doesn't simply put things down. He puts them back where they are supposed to be. This has worked for years and as we get older we realized that opposites attract for a reason. We enjoy seeing in someone else the exact opposite approach we wouldn't take to a situation. Neither way is "right". They are both good approaches to life and work well in different situations.

After 15 years we have learned that people generally don't change. You get what you signed up for. Opposites attract for a reason. They compliment each other and bring about a sort of balance to life.

So the next time you look across the table and see your loved one, whether it be your husband, wife, friend or family member doing something that drives you crazy, remember, maybe your way or the highway isn't the answer. Sometimes looking at something from a completely different view can provide a fresh way of looking at it.

By Linda Wegner Two years ago I published a book detailing some of the challenges I faced in my journey from pastor's wife to business owner. Never meant to be a heart-rendering chronicle of the emotional ups and downs I faced, I wrote it as a step-by-step outline of how God enabled me to move into a new and exciting phase of my life. Now I've decided to share three critical principles I followed in setting up my home-based business, mainly because I've found these things to be just as vital in my everyday life. I call them my 3Ds. The first step in the journey required an understanding of what I wanted to do or more accurately, of what I was capable of doing. As much as I love music and playing the piano, there's no way my elementary skills would've enabled me to work as a musician. Cross that one off the list. In a moment of panic I thought of applying for an entry level position at a large retail chain but I quickly realized my then recent battle with cancer left me physically unprepared for the work. Another X. What could I do? Then the light came on: although still relatively new to the field, I'd been published in nearly two dozen local newspapers and national religious magazines.

"That's what I'll do," I exclaimed excitedly to myself and my husband. "I'll establish a business as a writer!" The first principle: Discover your passion.

It was far from easy. People prophesied that I'd never be able to do it and I couldn't have done it without supportive friends. But, nearly fifteen years later, I still run my company.

Life Lesson: devotion to sound business principles can bring much earthly success; passionate commitment to Jesus Christ brings heavenly dividends, now and through eternity.

Welcome to the second weekend of/in Lent. As was mentioned in other columns, Lent is often the time to "give up" something. Could it be that Lent offers Satan a season with a whole different set of possible temptations? When we "give something up" for Lent, what is the purpose for this? Do we focus on Jesus or on the sacrifice that we are making when we give up something, like chocolate, that we really do not need? Does this bring us closer to Jesus in our lives? Even that question is backwards. Nothing we do can bring us closer to Jesus. What can happen is that the Holy Spirit can work faith in Jesus to inspire us in His service, but even this should not take away from focusing on Jesus.

The Church suggests Lent as a time of repentance, focusing on the suffering and death of Jesus. Even this can bring temptations. A few years ago, there was a movie that tried to show the extreme horror of the crucifixion. Might this remove Jesus as the center, and focus on the horror instead? When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, each temptation seemed reasonable, but He spoke the Word of God to overcome the temptations. How do we react when temptations seem reasonable?

One temptation that congregations have is to focus on the financial part of the organization. They may have very active stewardship drives, fund raisers, and other events to bring in the people so that the bottom line is in the black. Barbara Jurgenson wrote a book many years ago, offering some of the complaints of congregational members. For the complaint about flea markets etc. she said, "You know the alternative. Give."

But even this is backwards. Only when a person is committed to Jesus will the financial support come. Church growth organizations have often stated that the reason for which the person comes will be the reason that he/she stays. Unless the reason is Jesus, there will be failure. Music, meals, and anything else but Jesus will bring people to an organization, but will not ensure that Jesus is their Savior. Are we tempted to focus on (worship) money as a congregation? This can be a very big temptation.

Even this article can be a temptation. If I have led you to start thinking of other temptations to avoid, then I have helped Satan. I pray that each of us will focus on Jesus, our Savior, not only during Lent, but each day of our lives, repenting and asking for forgiveness when we are distracted. While driving, a cellular telephone can distract to cause an accident.

Pray that Satan's distractions are not eternally fatal.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, It's tax season time. After celebrating Family Day on Monday, Februar y 16, 2015, it is appropriate to outline recent initiatives by our Conservative government to help families.

First, we have introduced the new Family Tax Cut. This measure is aimed at couples with children under the age of 18, where one spouse is in a higher income tax bracket than the other.

The Family Tax Cut can lower a family's overall tax bill, providing tax relief up to a maximum of $2000.

Second, we have enhanced the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB). Our Government is increasing the UCCB for children under age six. As of January 1, 2015, parents will receive a benefit of $160 per month for each child under the age of six - up from $100 per month. Parents will now receive $1920 per child, per year.

We are also expanding the UCCB to children aged six through 17. As of January 1, 2015, parents will receive a benefit of $60 per month for children aged six through 17. Parents will receive $720 per child, per year.

Next, we are increasing the Child Care Expense Deduction dollar limits by $1000 for the 2015 tax year.

You or your spouse may be able to claim a deduction for expenses incurred for someone to look after your child so that one of you can work or go to school.

We have also doubled the Children's Fitness Tax Credit from $500 to $1000 per child, starting in the 2014 tax year.

Not only has our Government lowered taxes, we are also making it easier to file your taxes. Four in five Canadians are now experiencing the ease of filing online.

Many are receiving their tax refund in as little as 8 days when using direct deposit.

That's our Government putting more of your money back in your pocket at the earliest opportunity.

As our Prime Minister has said, our Government is fulfilling our promise to balance the federal budget. We are now in a position to fulfill our promise to help Canadian families balance theirs.

Celebrating through story & song Carol Daniels of Regina Beach spoke at the Weyburn Public Library on February 24 as part of Aboriginal Storytelling Month.

Daniels, along with her husband, Lyle, also attended a couple of local schools, storytelling through words, music and song.

Area firefighters participated in a mock vehicle pile-up rescue mission as part of a training day, held February 21 in Weyburn.

SaskEnergy supports KidSport

Gathering pucks with Gus

The February 21 game between the Weyburn Red Wings and the Melville Millionaires at Crescent Point Place was the eighth of 11 SaskEnergy game nights.

SaskEnergy’s Goals for KidSport program donates $20.00 for every home team goal scored during the SJHL season (up to $1000.00) to KidSport. As of February 15, a total of 932 goals have been scored, which means $18,640 has already been donated to KidSport Saskatchewan.

As part of the evening, SaskEnergy awarded the SaskEnergy Volunteer Champion Award.

This award is presented in each of the SJHL’s 12 team’s home rinks to the individual who has shown the most dedication and community support for their local team.

$25,000 donation made to Weyburn minor sports

A donation totalling $25,000.00 from the Oilmen's Bonspiel executive was presented to Weyburn minor sports at the Weyburn Curling Club on February 23. The recipients of the funds are local organizations: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Weyburn, Weyburn Minor Football, Weyburn Badminton Club, Weyburn Junior Curling, Weyburn High School Football and the Len Williams Coaching Legacy. The Oilmen's Bonspiel executive donates back an average of $3000.00 yearly to Weyburn minor sports. The larger donation for 2015 is due to generous sponsors for this year’s bonspiel. Representatives for the organizations were on hand on Monday to receive the donation.
