Grey Cup win has ties to Weyburn

Hometown boy wins Grey Cup

First time Grey Cup winner, Brett Jones had a lot to celebrate this weekend. After playing for a short time with the Calgary Stampeders, Jones got what all CFL players dream of, a chance to hoist that cup high above his head.

Brett was born July 29, 1991, right here in the city of Weyburn. At the young age of 23, Jones has already had quite an impressive career. After the 2012 CIS season, he was ranked as the eighth best player in the CFL Amateur Scouting Bureau final rankings for players eligible in the 2013 CFL draft and fifth by players in the Canadian Inter-university Sport. Jones signed on with Calgary on May 29, 2013 - a decision which has paid off already.

Jones, an offensive lineman, joined the team in celebrating the 20-16 win over the Hamilton Tiger Cats at the November 30 game. To top off the season, Jones was awarded the CFL Offensive Lineman of the Year.

This is the second year in a row that a former Weyburn athlete has been on the winning team in the Grey Cup as well as being awarded Offensive Lineman of the Year. Brendon LaBatte accomplished the same feat last year as part of the Saskatchewan Roughriders Grey Cup win.

Carol Festival set for Sunday The 60th annual Quota Carol Festival will take place on December 7 with performances at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at Grace United Church.

The program kicks off with a 2:00 p.m. performance by Small Voices of Grace, led by Kendra Weimer and accompanied by Colleen Weimer. The Family Place’s 15th annual Festival of Trees a success The 15th annual Festival of Trees, hosted by The Family Place, proved to be its most successful one ever.

This year, the festival had a total of 23 trees as well as numerous silent auction items including wreaths, jewellery, essential oils and toys. Barber Motors graciously donated their showroom for the week-long event, which ended with the gala and live auction on November 27.

Before beginning the auction, both Mayor Debra Button and Executive Director of The Family Place, Dawn Gutzke, addressed the crowd. Gutzke was emotionally moved when thanking everyone on behalf of herself and the staff at The Family Place.

The Family Place was established in 1995 as a community-funded, communitydriven resource center for families in Weyburn and the surrounding area. Every year residents and staff donate countless hours and funds to keep both the building and the programs running. The Family Place is a

non-profit organization which relies on fundraising efforts, such as the Festival of Trees, in order to continue to be able to offer their programs and services. The Festival sees both residents and business owners donate either prizes or decorated Christmas trees to be auctioned off.

Some of the programs available at The Family Place include Drop In Play, Bakers to Be, Home Alone Safety, Sunny Scholars and Community Kitchen. Dawn expressed the importance of making everyone who walks through the doors feel welcome. With The Family Place reaching its highest fundraising total for a single event, those doors can continue to stay open.

After quick calculations, with donations still trickling in, Gutzke announced the event raised over $72,000.

Two trees, which were purchased for $4,900 each, contributed to the high grand total. Mal Barber of Barber Motors and Jeff Tosczak of Great Plains Ford were the generous purchasers of

those trees. The Family Place staff was very pleased with the support this year, ensuring that the work will continue to benefit families in

need in 2015.

The Family Place's recent Facebook status update is a sure indication that the season of giving is alive and well

in Weyburn. "Thank you, thank you, thank you, to our wonderful Weyburn community, for your generous hearts! Our Festival of Trees

was a wonderful, inspiring, encouraging success! Our hearts are full and so grateful for your love and support!"

A huge crowd gathered in the Barber Motors showroom at The Family Place Festival of Trees on November 27.

Montreal Massacre memorial service to be held December 6 Twenty-five years ago, on December 6, 1989, a 25 year-old student by the name of Marc Lepine took the lives of 14 women, injur-

ing an additional 13. Lepine, who was registered in the engineering program at the University of Montreal, began his reign of terror by walking into a classroom and demanded that all men leave the room, which left all the women at his mercy. What began as screaming profanities at the women soon escalated into a full fledge attack that took him throughout the school facility. Lepine's stated intention of killing feminists as a political statement, and as a way to scare women back to their tradi-

tional roles, shocked people around the world.

On December 6 at 3:30 p.m., at the Weyburn Junior High, a service is being held in honour of the victims of this tragedy, which is referred to as "The Montreal Massacre".

The event not only took the lives of the 14 women, injuring an additional 13 victims of both genders, but left families and friends behind to bear the emotional trauma.

"While the Montreal massacre happened 25 years ago, the need to remind people of violence against

women continues," says Christa Daku, executive director of Envision Counselling and Support Centre.

"Things have changed since we began counselling women in the southeast - such as a flat-line of national rates of self-reported spousal violence - but we're seeing some disturbing trends."

She says that women are less likely now to report an incident to police than in the past. Statistics now show that more women are experiencing violence after they leave their abuser.

Daku also emphasized that partner abuse has a profound impact on children. Each year in Saskatchewan, approximately 24,000 children will be exposed to male violence against their mothers in their own homes. Children are present during 80 per cent of these assaultive incidents.

Saskatchewan introducing two retro licence plates Two new retro licence plates - the Collector plate and the Vintage Roughrider plate - will be available for Saskatchewan residents to pre-order through SGI, just in time for the holiday season.

"Green is the colour," Minister responsible for SGI Don McMorris said. "It's the colour of our province, the colour of our pride, and now the colour of two new specialty licence plates Saskatchewan residents can display proudly on their vehicles. We're going back to our roots and drawing on Saskatchewan's heritage with the new Collector and Vintage Rider licence plates."

The retro licence plates are modeled after the 1965 Saskatchewan licence plate. They have a green background with embossed white numbers, border, and lettering along the top and bottom. The Collector plate says "Collector" 14121SS00

along the bottom, while the Vintage Rider plate says "Rider Nation" and features a vintage Saskatchewan Roughrider team logo on the left.

"In Saskatchewan, people are passionate about their classic cars," Rural and Remote Health Minister and MLA for Yorkton Greg Ottenbreit said. "The new Collector plate is a way for car enthusiasts, myself included, to showcase that passion. It's the final touch of authenticity to your classic car."

"The history of our football team is ingrained in Saskatchewan culture," Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club President and CEO Jim Hopson said. "We all know the Saskatchewan Roughriders have the world's greatest fans, so it's exciting to be able to provide fans the opportunity to

display their pride with the new Vintage Rider plate."

Customers can pre-order the plates starting tomorrow, December 3 at 9 a.m., by completing an order form that will be available on SGI's website at www.sgi.sk.ca. The cost for the Collector plate is $75 plus GST, while the Vintage Rider plate is $100 plus GST. Both plates can be personalized for an additional fee of $75 plus GST. In addition to the new retro plates, SGI offers four other types of specialty plates: personalized, Veteran, Rider Pride and Memorial Cross.

Police kept busy with disputes and theft On December 1, as a result of a traffic check, a 65 yearold male was arrested and charged with driving over .08 and driving without a valid licence. His vehicle was seized for 60 days and he will be making a court appearance in due course.

On November 29, as a result of a traffic stop, a 31 yearold male was arrested and charged with driving Over .08. He will be making a court appearance in due course.

Also on November 29, the Weyburn Police Service responded to a report of a domestic assault occurring in the residence between a 48 year old male and a 49 year old female. The matter was successfully mediated with no further police involvement.

On November 28, the Weyburn Police Service were called to a report of a hit and run collision in the 600 block of King Street. The suspect vehicle is described as a black 2door car with a spoiler, possibly a Cavalier. This vehicle struck a fence and fled the scene.

The Weyburn Police Service have received more than one complaint about a fraud involving what is called the ''Secret Shopper' fraud. The victim has answered an employment ad online and is provided with a kit and instructions on how to be a secret shopper for the company. The victim is provided with a cheque which they deposit, and then make purchases and return the items and cash to the company. The original cheque provided is then found to be fraudulent and the victim is out the money and property. We urge people

to be very cautious when embarking on such an employment venture and perform their due-diligence prior to spending any of the money given to them.

On November 27, the Weyburn Police Service received a report from a local business that had been defrauded of in excess of $320,000.00. The investigation is still in the early stages and will involve multiple agencies.

Also on November 27, the Weyburn Police Service received a report of a theft of tools from a local business. One suspect description is a caucasian male, 5'8" tall, 170 lbs., black rim glasses, black toque with 'misifts' written on it and wearing a black and red coat.

On November 25, the Weyburn Police Service was dispatched to a report of a disturbance at a local pub. Upon arrival the incident had partially resolved itself. Two local men, ages 42 and 54, were sent home. The 25 year-old male victim was happy with the resolution with no further action being required.

On November 24, the Weyburn Police Service received a complaint of a domestic assault having happened at a local business. As the result of the incident, the 39 year-old female victim transported herself to the Weyburn General Hospital where she was examined and released. A 41 year-old male has been charged with assault and has been released on a No Contact Order and will be making a court appearance.

As December is upon us, the members of the Weyburn Police Service will be making an extra effort to keep our roads safe from drinking drivers. You can expect to see checkstops and random checks around the city during the entire month.

Crazy at Costco

Gifts to meet our needs

By Helen Waller If you have ever shopped at Costco, you will know the title of this column isn't actually that far-fetched.

The Christmas season is slowly sneaking up on us, but the winter blues have hit as hard as a snowball to the face.

I have to say, I was fairly impressed with my level of patience the other day while waiting for a gentleman to back out of a parking space at Costco so I could get in it. I was sitting there quietly, except for the sound of the blinking signal light, when it happened. It makes me giggle to think of it now and even had me laughing then.

A slightly crazed fellow started banging on my window yelling profanities at me. I rolled down my window and asked "Can I help you?" (Which, judging by his behaviour, was a really bad question to ask.) He needed help alright... I certainly didn't have the type HE needed. He proceeded to tell me that I needed to get the "bleep" out of his way. I wasn't quite sure what he was talking about. This man had come out of nowhere, or so it seemed.

That's when I realized he had jumped out of his truck behind me, leaving the door wide open, so that he could tell me to move.

He didn't even go the usual driver rage first step ...and lay on the horn. I mean, seriously, who gets out of their truck on a Saskatchewan winter evening if they don't have to?

I am guessing by the redness of his face, he probably wasn't feeling the cold anyway. I explained to him that I was simply waiting for the parking spot, and I DID have my signal light on. He was more than welcome to drive around me if he could not wait the extra few seconds for the other driver to finish backing up.

I found it ironic that I had just heard on the radio on my way in to the city that the Mayor had declared that very day as "The Day of Giving" in Regina. I really don't think giving someone a hard time was what he meant. It looks like he is going to have to get a tad more specific next year, because this guy clearly wasn't getting the message.

He mumbled some more and took off with his arms in the air as I wished him a very Merry Christmas. Maybe he was wishing me Happy Holidays with his sign language... that's what I am going to go with. I was feeling pretty happy about how calm I remained. I was having a fantastic day and this guy was not going to ruin it. I truly believe you get what you give, and it seemed that this fellow was definitely heading in the wrong direction.

Finally I got in to my parking space and headed to the store when I see the truck come back around the corner, this time in the wrong lane. He cut off a lady and ended up causing quite the traffic jam in the already cramped parking lot. It looked like things weren't getting any better for this guy when I walked by the crowd of cars to see the other drivers flipping him the bird. I couldn't help but giggle. Seems to me, the universe said what I had wanted to in the first place. All I had to do was keep my mouth closed and karma handled the rest.

By Linda Wegner The stress of shopping for that perfect gift can be overwhelming. As I mentioned in last week's article, it's all about identifying something that he or she wants or needs. Sounds simple, doesn't it.

Since I've never been able to find a simple formula for meeting that criteria, I turned to the wisdom of others for help. Here are some of the suggestions I discovered. First ascertain the personality type of the intended recipient and go from there, create a Christmas Gift Registry List or, determine what it is you want to say and communicate that to the recipient.

The gift registry sounds like a winner. Open the book or website, choose between the listed options and voila all you need to do is head down to the nearest mall...except I'm a year late in setting up a 2014 Christmas version of any kind of list. Scratch that one.

Forward march to matching personality types with presents. I click on the appropriate buttons for gender, age, morning routine and favourite chair. Within several blinks of the eye, suggestions pop up on the screen. Unfortunately the idea that seemed closest to reality for Hubby's qualifications is dill pickle flavoured popcorn. That's definitely not the message I want to convey, although he really likes dill pickles.

Truth or fiction In the world today, there are various ways that the question "Truth or Fiction?" is asked. In a previous parish, when visiting a member, they entertained by playing a board game that asked questions and gave one player the answer, while others got the "order" to lie. Points were given for every lie that was believed or every true answer believed. Also, years ago there was "Ripley's Believe it or not!"

What does this have to do with a Clergy Column? December 6 is the celebration of St. Nicolas, Bishop of Myra. He was a very kind and generous person, who gave to many. Stories are told of his tours during the night when he would give gifts of kindness to people whom he knew were in need. But this was the real St. Nicolas, and the lie of "Santa Clause". Unlike the lie who keeps track of your "naughty or nice", the real did not base receiving on "goodness". Unlike the Santa of today who gives to wants and desires trinkets and "stuff" that to increase our possessions and bragging ability as well as our "fun", the real St. Nicolas gave to the need, such as a bag of coins dropped through a chimney for a lady who would be married except for the need of a few coins.

Unfortunately, good gifts have been changed to suggest "bad" gifts. At that time, people left their shoes outside. St. Nicolas would go around in the night, placing precious coal in the shoes so that the household would have fuel to heat the house as well as cook meals. Many a family gained the ability to care for themselves because of the gift of coal. However, today, the gift of coal is suggested to be given to people who have been "bad" during the past year.

The real St. Nicolas of the fourth century lived among the people, not a distant place. He was simply a person giving help to people in his own community, not one who had magical reindeer that could fly and travel at nearly the speed of light in order to get all the toys delivered in a few short hours. The truth gave the gift secretly, by an unknown person, not a lying, flashy person looking for a photograph opportunity in a mall.

When someone "caught" Nicolas as he was giving a gift, his generosity did not stop. However, after his death, his life and gift giving inspired others in the town to give gifts secretly and the respond with, "It must have been St. Nicolas."

It seems amusing, even tragic, that science who tries to pretend that they know all the answers accept the lie of Santa Claus, even "following" him on radar. Yet, how many schools are not allowed to have real Christmas programs? There are situations where a student was reprimanded for telling the truth of the birth of Jesus, while conversations about the lie of Santa Claus are tolerated, even encouraged. Let us keep Christ in Christmas. To paraphrase H. S. Vigevino in the Book Jesus, The Revolutionary, "It is better to destroy an illusion then to live a lie.

May each of us worship the Christ of Christmas, celebrating the truth rather than fostering a lie.

SE College answering labour market need Southeast College hosted an Open House for its PreApprentice Plumbing & Pipefitting Program on November 20 at the Weyburn Campus.

Southeast College is positioning itself to better meet the needs of Southeast Saskatchewan's tight labour market by offering responsive, flexible training options for in-demand positions in the region. The Plumbing & Pipefitting course will graduate seven students who will be prepared to enter the labour market. The Open House event offered students the chance to make connections with employers.

"We are constantly studying labour market trends and talking with local business and industry to discover their needs," said Jeff Richards, Vice President of Strategic Development at Southeast College.

"We can also work with employers to help match them with our graduates, as well as tailoring programs that meet the specific needs of employers."

Local plumbing contractor Erin Reddick, from Climatek, attended the event and was pleased at the level of training the students received. Angie Hastings from Don's Plumbing & Heating was also in attendance and had praise for the comprehensive 17-week program. "Our company continues to grow and getting access to people who want to work in the industry and who are trained is critical to growth," said Hastings.

Although the program doesn't end until January, most of the students have already found a workplace to begin their apprenticeship. The College anticipates an even more active role in providing labour market solutions and encourages business, as well those looking for careers, to watch for information on upcoming courses and events.

Weyburn Duplicate Bridge Club report The Weyburn Duplicate Bridge Club will be having their annual Christmas dinner at the Captain's Table on Monday, December 22 followed by bridge at the Wheatland Senior Centre. Regular duplicate bridge is played Mondays at 7:00 p.m. and Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. at the Wheatland Senior Centre. All bridge players are welcome to come and play this form of bridge.

On November 3, there were three tables and Diane Bell and Barry Mactaggart took top honours, followed by Lucie Nickel and John Whitell in second.

Three and a half tables played on November 6 and Barry Mactaggart and Lucie Nickel had a strong game to claim first, John Whitell and Chuck Widdis came second, and Diane and Gord Bell were third.

On November 10, four tables were in play with Diane and Gord Bell finishing first, Jim Brown and John Whitell were second, while Barry Mactaggart and Marg Stewart were third.

With three tables on November 13, first place went to Gord Bell and Marg Stewart, while second place went to Diane Bell and Barry Mactaggart.

On November 17 with three tables playing, Gord Bell and Marg Stewart finished in first, and Jim Brown and John Whitell placed second.

Four tables played on November 20 and first place went to John Whitell and Chuck Widdis; second place went to Isabelle Butters and Marg Stewart; and tied for third place were Jim Brown and Reggie Frank and Fred and Lydia Milleker.

On November 24 with three tables, taking first place were Lydia Milleker and Lucie Nickel, and finishing in second place were Fred Milleker and Andy Dumba.

The last game of the month, played on November 27, had three tables playing and Jim Brown and Reggie Frank took top honours, while Diane and Gord Bell placed second.

School news Now that it is December, our thoughts turn to Christmas music concerts and the WCS bands and choirs are very busy this month. The Grade 12 choir and S.T.A.R.S. choir performed at the Regina Rotary Carol festival on December 1.

Then on Sunday, December 7, the school choirs are performing at the Weyburn Quota Club Carol Festival at Grace United Church. On Monday, December 8, the S.T.A.R.S. choir has been asked to perform at the Bengough Christmas Concert and all of this culminates with the annual Christmas concerts at WCS with the choirs performing on Monday, December 15 and the bands on Tuesday December 16 with both concerts starting at 7:00 in the Cugnet Centre.

Admission is $5.00.

Another feather in the cap of the S.T.A.R.S. choir is that they have been chosen to perform at Telemiracle 2015.

The drama club is presenting the stage version of "Peter Pan" at the T.C. Douglas Center on December 12, 13 and 14 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $5.00.

The senior basketball teams have been chosen and they will be attending their first tournaments on December 5 and 6, with the boys in Prince Albert and the girls in Caronport.

There will be a wrestling tournament on December 6 in the Cugnet Centre.

Guest speaker Ian Tyson will be here to talk to the students on Friday, December 5.

Parenteau has hot start in WHL

Former Weyburn Red Wing, Rylan Parenteau, who is currently playing for the Prince Albert Raiders, has been one of the hottest goalies in the WHL for the last few weeks.

Parenteau has helped win five out of the six games played by the Raiders. The 18-year-old describes how his time spent as a Red Wing has been a major contributing factor to his current success.

"Weyburn was an excellent developmental year for me," acknowledged Parenteau. "It allowed me to move my way up in junior hockey and it allowed me to play with older players."

"By playing so many games, I knew I could be a starter," added Parenteau, who appeared in 41 games with the Red Wings last year. "I gained a lot of confidence through all that."

With his time spent with Weyburn developing a strong base, and the continued hard work Parenteau puts in, the future looks bright for the young star.

Wings to help out with Food Challenge Throughout the home game on Saturday, December 6 against the Notre Dame Hounds, there will be a table set up in the lobby of Crescent Point Place where City of Weyburn staff will be collecting non-perishable food items and Salvation Army donations to be given to the less fortunate this holiday season.

The City has challenged Barber Motors to see who can collect the most "weight" in food to donate to the holiday train when it rolls into Weyburn on December 17. Each dollar donated to the cause will count as one pound of food.

The Red Wings will also be offering reduced priced beverages in the beer gardens throughout the game on Saturday in celebration of their recent success on the road.

The team hopes to pack the stands to cheer on the red and white as they make the push to overtake top spot in the Viterra division.
