Having a ball in the pool

Two girls enjoyed floating on a raft playing with balls in the deep end of the pool at the Weyburn Leisure Centre on Friday afternoon. They were part of a large group of residents attending the toonie swim held on the last weekday of the Christmas-New Year’s holidays. These girls and their friends and classmates were back in class as all Weyburn area schools resumed on Monday morning.

Public Library programs set for January

A wide range of programs have been set for the month of January at the Weyburn Public Library for children and adults. The programs are free of charge, but some require preregistration as space is limited for some events. For young children, there are music and story times available. A toddler storytime is offered on Tuesday and Wednesdays for children aged 18 months up to three years, and a preschool storytime for those aged three to five is held on Fridays. A “Read with the Red Wings” literacy event will be held on Sunday, Jan. 28 from 2 to 4 p.m.,

to help mark Family Literacy Day (Jan. 27). Families are invited to come out and read a story with their favourite Red Wings player, and there will be fun activities to do as well. For older children, there will be X-box and board game sessions held on Wednesdays from 3:45 to 5 p.m. on Jan. 10, 17, 24 and 31 for those aged seven to 12 years. Think Tank Junior, for those aged seven to nine, will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 23 after school, with the theme of “Coding with Lego”, and Think Tank for children aged 10-14 years will be held on Thurs-

day, Jan. 11 and 25, also after school. The Studio A program will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 16 and 30, after school for children aged 10 to 14 years. A Winter Storybird session will be held on Monday, Jan. 29 after school for children aged eight to 14. Children will be invited to create their own winter story with the storybird program. As space is limited, registration will be required. For adults, some of the special events or programs will include an author reading by Ron Ror from his new book, “Weyburn Stories”, a collection of nine fictional stories based on Weyburn people and places. The reading will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Allie Griffin Art Gallery. There will be two 3-D printer orientation sessions held, on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 11 a.m., and on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.

Participants will learn all about this new technology, including how to select, design and create a 3-D model of your own. Orientation is a requirement for being able to use the library’s 3-D printer. There will be additional dates set in the New Year. A session on eco-friendly cleaning tips will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. Marna McManus will show participants how to make non-toxic cleaning supplies, and get stains out without jeopardizing the health of family members. A book club will meet on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 6:30 p.m. The club is reading the book, “The Forgotten Garden” by Kate Morton. Those interested can pick up a copy of the book at the library, and come to the session for a discussion. A writer’s workshop will be held with local author Anne Lazurko on Saturday, Jan. 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Space is limited, so preregistration is required.

Taking the snowboard down the hill

Ozzy Parisien rode his snowboard down the sledding hill near River Park on Thursday afternoon, just off Confederation Drive. He was at the hill along with his sister and mom and children from her day care, enjoying the moderate winter weather before the end of the Christmas-New Year’s holidays.
