Hunters can help monitor the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease The Ministry of Environment is asking hunters to help monitor the spread and intensity of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in wild deer, elk, moose and caribou populations by submitting heads of harvested animals for disease testing, free of charge. CWD is a fatal, infectious central nervous system disease that can affect deer, elk, caribou and moose. First discovered in wild mule deer in 2000, the disease has now been confirmed in 44 of Saskatchewan’s 83 wildlife management zones and three of the four cervid species present in the province (deer, elk, moose). It has not yet been detected in caribou. Hunters can help reduce the spread of CWD through the proper disposal of deer carcass waste. Avoid transporting

bring a legal land description to find it, or aerial photos can also be searched by referring to the landowner’s name at the time the photo was taken. Kim Bessette bought the Calgary-based company 23 years ago, including an archive of over 600,000 photos, and noted they are asked often if they have aerial photos dating back from years gone by. Often people looking for these photos are from the landowners family, or are children or grandchildren of tenants or landowners. If people want photos from other areas of the province, or from Alberta, B.C.’s Peace country, or Manitoba, they can contact Bessette in advance so he can bring those. Getting to ride a horse on a cool day

Review Photo 6634 — Greg Nikkel

Caroline Walter held on tight as she was led on a horse for a ride during the “Horse Craze Day” event held on Saturday afternoon at the Weyburn exhibition grounds. The fundraiser was held by the Weyburn Riding and Driving Club, which is in the midst of making upgrades to the barns at the city farm where many of their members board and ride their horses. The members of the Weyburn Riding and Driving Club held a fundraiser and are hoping to increase the awareness in the community about their activities. The club held a “Horse Craze Day” at the Weyburn fair grounds on Saturday, as they raise funds towards making upgrades to the barns at the city farm. The club, which has been around since about 1972, leases the city farm from the City of Weyburn, as many of them board and ride their horses there, some doing so year-round. The city farm is located on Queen Street north of Highway 13, just west of the former Souris Valley grounds, and as club president Mason Richaud explained, the barns are old and are in need of repairs. The roofs were repaired, and now they are putting tin on the walls to upgrade the buildings. Once the barns are upgraded, the club has plans to upgrade the pens and corrals at the farm. As the SPCA has rules regarding the boarding of horses, including that they have an indoor facility where they can be housed when the weather warrants it, this is why the club wants to ensure the barns are fixed up properly. The club has 12 families as members right now, and they have the capacity for 14 at the city farm. Richaud admitted that many people outside of the club aren’t aware that they exist or are active, and hopes the club will be more active and visible in the community in the future. The club members have had riding events, and the members have attended other horse events, such as the Griffin Horse Show. Richaud pointed out that many of the children are 4-H members as well.
