Wonder Woman (aka Stephanie Butz) and Supergirl (aka Jayda Cameron) carefully exchanged a ping pong ball with spoons as team-mate Keely O’Neill waited her turn at left, during one of the challenges in the “Minute to Win It” contest at Communithon on Oct. 19. The three Communithon superheroes, plus Keely, formed a team who went up against the Weyburn Credit Union’s team, which won the overall trophy.

Doctors with the Sun Country Regional Medical Association had a meeting in Weyburn with Dr. Siva Karunakaran, president of the Saskatchewan Medical Association — Local powerlifters won provincial medals and set records after attending the provincial championship, with many of the athletes qualifying to compete at nationals to be held in March 2019 — Police agencies, including the Weyburn Police Service, were “as ready as we can be” for the legalization of marijuana, which took effect on Oct. 17, said Weyburn police chief Marlo Pritchard, who is also president of the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police — Prairie Sky Co-operative Association sold their Expressions store, with assets and inventory, to Christy Sanderson, who also bought the Metro Centre building in downtown Weyburn — A new librarian, Matthew Rankin, took over duties at the Weyburn Public Library, coming here from Ontario — The Weyburn United Way held their Communithon fundraiser on Oct. 19, raising about $70,000 by the end of the telethon, with that total rising later close to $100,000 — The Weyburn Police Commission approved a policy for members of the Weyburn Police Service, that they cannot use marijuana 24 hours before going on duty, a similar policy to one adopted by the Canadian Armed Forces — City of Weyburn workers under CUPE reached an agreement with the city, voting 90 per cent in favour of their new contract — Don Sealy, founder and long-time manager of the Therapeutic Animal Park, retired from his position after 35 years, with a special retirement party held for him at the Legion — Canada Post workers began rotating strikes across Canada, and first hit the picket line in Weyburn on Oct. 30 — A group of 13 local dancers were chosen to be part of a professional ballet production of The Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition, with Ballet Jorgen — The Weyburn Crescent Point Energy Eagles won the league championship in a final game against Assiniboia on Oct. 26.

Canadian superstar Jann Arden sang one of her big hits, “Could I Be Your Girl?”, during her concert in Weyburn on Nov. 6 at the Cugnet Centre. Close to 900 people came out for the concert, hosted by the Weyburn Concert Series in celebration of their 50th anniversary, with the show lasting about two and a half hours as she covered her biggest songs along with tunes from her latest release.

A letter from the First World War was shared at Weyburn’s Remembrance Day service, and at the school service for the Weyburn Comprehensive School, by Bengough resident Jerry Coubrough. The letter was sent from one of his uncles home, and he shared his experiences during the war, including where his brother was shot and later died of his injuries, and was shared as this was the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War — The Juvenile Diabetes Walk raised about $11,000, bringing the total for the past decade to around a quarter-million dollars for research into Type 1 diabetes — The Cugnet family of Weyburn was honoured as Outstanding Philanthropists on Nov. 14, at the 17th annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon held in Regina, as they were nominated by the STARS Foundation — The War Mother for the Weyburn Legion was Susan Mailhiot, whose late husbands, Bob Abel and Lucien Mailhiot, both served in the Second World War — Mark and Bobbie Bratrud of Bratrud Ag Commodities were presented with the Golden Sheaf Award at the Farmer Appreciation banquet hosted by the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce — City council voted to only backstop the wages for Mayor Marcel Roy in the New Year, and not for the rest of council, as they decided how to react to the federal government’s action to remove a tax exemption for elected officials, which for Weyburn will be an 8.5 per cent reduction — The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce will keep safety in the forefront of the Parade of Lights, after a four-year-girl died in a tragic accident during a Santa parade in Nova Scotia — The Bill and Helen Davidson Foundation bought a new piano for the Tatagwa View long-term care centre, and dedicated it with a concert by the Variations singers.

Paramedic promotes mental health for first responders

Tremcar president meets the Environment minister Jacques Tremblay, owner and president of Tremcar Technologies, chatted with Weyburn-Big Muddy MLA and Environment minister Dustin Duncan during the company’s 10-year anniversary celebration on Sept. 6. Both were guest speakers at the event, where Tremblay announced the company will be expanding the Review Photo 4768 — Greg Nikkel Weyburn operations by manufacturing propane tanks, adding about 15 jobs here.

Front-line warriors of the Weyburn Police Service

Nicholas Hennink, a paramedic and singer (front left) gathered with members of the Weyburn Police Service on Dec. 5, with Nicholas’ banner in front in reference to a new music video of his song, “Warriors”, released on YouTube on Dec. 8. Nicholas has been compiling photos of emergency services from around Saskatchewan, of fire, ambulance and police departments. He has around 25 of the group photos so far, which he posts on-line and on social media platforms as part of his campaign to promote good mental health for First Responders.

An advanced-care paramedic and singer-songwriter, Nicholas Hennink, paid a visit to the Weyburn Police Service and the Weyburn Fire Department as he did photos with each group, and promoted positive mental health for first responders with the release of his rock song, Warriors, on YouTube — Three people were arrested on drug trafficking charges following a large drug operation conducted by the Weyburn Police Service and other police agencies — The Festival of Trees raised $50,000 for the Family Place, after 22 Christmas trees and 103 silent auction items were sold at this year’s location at New Age Motorsports — Local performers of a wide range of ages prepared for the production of the musical “Annie”, directed by Colleen Weimer at Grace United Church, with full houses on hand for three performances on Dec. 7-9 — Olympic curler Joanne Courtney had her own cheering section, as a Grade 7 class from St. Michael School travelled to Estevan to see her play in the Canada Cup curling competition — The Weyburn Co-operative Playschool unveiled new equipment and toys bought with a donation of $1,000 by the oil service company Baker Hughes — The SJHL launched publication of a book, “Heart and Soul of the SJHL”, compiled and produced by Rod Pedersen, with histories of every past and present SJHL team to mark the league’s 50th anniversary — The Weyburn and District United Way voted to dissolve as a board, and disbursed a total of nearly $170,000 to their member agencies, with a promise of a volunteer board to look after the agencies while the Regina United Way takes over administering the Weyburn postal code area — The Weyburn Red Wings fired coach Wes Rudy on Dec. 15, and the board will take time to consider their options while Kyle Haines and Jeff Schaeffer will share coaching duties on an interim basis — Canadian band, The Trews, and guitarist Willie Porter headlined the CP Holiday Train, which rolled into Weyburn on Dec. 16, with $5,500 presented to the Salvation Army by CP Rail employees, along with donations of 850 pounds of food and $542 in cash donations.

Skating outdoors on a mild winter day A group of boys skated on the outdoor skating rink at Gordon Miles Place on Thursday, taking advantage of the last days of the Christmas-New Year’s holiday from school and mild temperatures which went up to over 0 degrees.
