A little girl patiently waited to eat her lollipop that she got from the Dr. Finnystein’s Real Cool Energy Show while getting a rainbow painted on her face. Face painting, scavenger hunts and the magic show were all part of the Family Fun Day event at the Soo Line Historical Museum on Saturday.
Lyndsay Bell performed her original song “Wild Flower” for the crowd at Heritage Village Days on Friday. Other acts that took the stage on the weekend were James Dionne, De Tricky Feet Dance Studio, Karissa Hoffart, Kearstin Pfeiffer and Alfredo.

Heritage Village Days had a variety of demonstrations available to view on both Friday and Saturday for the Wheat Festival. One of the demonstrations was of how newspapers use to be printed when they were first introduced into the world, with press equipment donated by the Weyburn Review. There were also sheep herding, rope-making, ice cream making and butter making demos.

The pARTy on the Hill event is usually held on the grounds of the Signal Hill Arts Centre, but it was relocated at the last minute this year to the Cugnet Centre due to rainy weather conditions. There were 43 vendors available at the event, 32 of which were local businesses. Review Photo April Zielke

Many visitors took a ride on the vintage fire truck, driven by Murray Keefe at right, at the Heritage Village during the Weyburn Wheat Festival on Friday. There were many demos, activities and displays at the village, along with food and entertainment. Guides were available in most of the buildings as people toured through the village to see the historical items on display.

Dr. Finnystein had the children in the crowd pose for a picture during his Real Cool Energy Show at the Soo Line Historical Museum on Saturday, but when he took the photo he revealed that the camera was a water gun and started spraying them. The magic show was the main event for the Family Fun Day event at the museum for the Wheat Festival. There was also a scavenger hunt and face-painting available for families to enjoy.

Community cultural gathering to be held by SE District A cultural gathering on the arts and positive community change will be held in Weyburn by the Southeast Sport, Culture and Recreation District. The day-long community culture gathering will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Signal Hill Arts Centre, with a deadline to register of Sept. 12. In its role of coordinating cultural and recreation programs and services, the Southeast District connects a growing network of individuals and organizations interested in sharing, discussing and obtaining information on the arts and culture. The “in motion Community Chase” will be held in Weyburn and Estevan on two consecutive Fridays, in Weyburn on Aug. 23 and in Estevan on Aug. 30. The Weyburn event will go from 1 to 4 p.m. at River Park. The idea is to get teams of families and kids out to play and to explore their respective communities in a series of run challenges. Saskatchewan Blue
Cross is combining with in motion to bring the Community Chase, and is will use outdoor spaces in new ways to inspire kids and families to go out and play. A number of other programs are also offered through the district, including offering assistance for any groups or communities interested in taking part in a workshop offered by the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport on designating a heritage property in their community. The free workshops will be held in Moose Jaw on Sept. 24 and 25, and will be of interest to anyone who owns, uses, manages, interprets or regulates heritage buildings and other historic places. The workshop on Sept. 24 will cover a statement of significance and heritage inventory, and on Sept. 25, the topic will be heritage standards and guidelines and downtown design. Southeast District will provide travel assistance in the amount of 25 cents per kilometer to and from Moose Jaw, with one
vehicle covered per community. To apply for travel assistance, email before Sept. 15 to admin@southeastdistrict.ca. There will be Heritage Awards presented by Heritage Saskatchewan on Oct. 9 at Government House in Regina, and the deadline for these awards is Monday, Aug. 26 at noon. The categories for Heritage Awards include community development, public outreach, physical heritage conservation and intangible culture heritage. For those who visit regional parks in the southeast over the summer, or around the province, there is a Saskatchewan Regional Parks Photo Contest, where people are asked to capture “fun in the sun”. Winning photos will be published in the 2020 Regional Parks Guide and will be featured on the Regional Parks website. First prize will be $250, second prize will be $150 and third is $100, with honourable mentions winning a free season pass. The deadline is Oct. 15.
