Comp Eagles hold lead in annual McLeod Series The Weyburn Comprehensive School (WCS) Eagles have taken the lead over the Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs in the annual McLeod Series basketball showdown between the two teams. The teams split their games Wednesday night in Estevan, with the Eagles boys winning their game 96-78 and WCS girls losing 80-78. Weyburn holds a 174-158 advantage in point differential, which will be the tie-breaker if each team wins twice in the best-offour showdown. The Eagles and the Elecs were tied 33-33 midway through the second quarter of the senior boys games, but then Weyburn took over, outscoring Estevan 17-4 to lead 50-37 at half-time. The Eagles continued to dominate into the third quarter to lead by 23 at one point. Estevan cut the deficit to a dozen points, but never drew closer, thanks in part to a buzzer-beating three-point shot for the Eagles at the end of the third quarter. The senior girls game, meanwhile, had the excitement, lead changes, intensity and crowd energy one would expect from the McLeod Series. The Eagles opened with an 11-4 run, but Estevan fought back and led 22-21 after the first quarter. The Elecs extended the lead to 27-21 in the second quarter, but Weyburn re-

sponded, and the game was tied 42-42 at half-time. The wild momentum changes continued into the third quarter. Estevan built a 59-55 lead late in the third, but Weyburn knocked down back-toback three-point shots to lead after three. The Eagles led 76-67 late in the fourth, but Estevan went on a 13-2 run to finish the game and earn the split. The final two games in the series will be played tonight, Feb. 12, in Weyburn, with the senior girls up first at 5:30 p.m. and the senior boys playing at 7:30 in the Eagle gym. The WCS Eagles Junior A boys basketball team went to Moose Jaw on the weekend for a tournament at Palliser school. The Eagles faced the home team and came up just short with a 43-34 loss. They faced the Moose Jaw Westmount team on Saturday. The Eagles came back from being down by 12 at one point and cruised in the fourth quarter, pulling off a 43-37 victory to put them into the B final. In the B final the boys were up against the Swift Current Irwin squad. After a dominating first quarter which saw them with a 13-0 lead, Irwin fought back to tie the game before the half. Weyburn Red Wings split weekend games

Gold at Len Williams Memorial Classic

The senior boys defeated Oxbow in the quarter-finals, Humboldt in the semi-finals, and then they beat Moose Jaw Peacock in the final to win gold. Review photo — April Zielke

By April Zielke The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings were on the road this weekend, as they played the Yorkton Terriers on Friday, and the Humboldt Broncos on Saturday. After a scoreless first period in Yorkton, Rhett Frey scored the first goal of the game 15 seconds into the second period. The Terriers quickly tied up the score a little less than four minutes later. The Terriers pulled ahead at the 8:06 mark, but Nikolas Sombrowski evened out the score for the Wings. An early Terriers goal in the third put the pressure on the Wings and Mathieu Belanger delivered with a goal to tie up the game and send it into overtime. Overtime solved nothing, so the game moved on to a shootout. The game ended 4-3 in favour of the Terriers after the Red Wings were only able to land one in the netting, while the Terriers were able to get two past Joseph Young. Final shots on net were

46-41 for the Red Wings. The following night the Red Wings took the ice in Humboldt. Over 11 minutes into the first period, the Broncos led 1-0, but Belanger and Liam Rutten were able to score 13 seconds apart, just as the period was winding down. The score remained 2-1 until Kabir Gill earned his third goal of the season. The Broncos pulled their goaltender from the net to gain an extra man late in the third, and while the man advantage did earn them one goal, the empty net also allowed Braden Birnie and Sombrowski to score empty netters. D o u g l a s Wa k e l y n earned his first SJHL career win as the Red Wings walked away with a 5-2 win. Final shots were 53-27 for the Broncos with Wakelyn earning the second star of the game. The Red Wings played their final game against the Terriers in Yorkton on Monday. Right after a media timeout in the first period, the Terriers

scored the first goal of the game. At the 16:33 mark, the Terriers took a hooking penalty giving the Red Wings a man advantage. With over a minute gone in the power play, Birnie found Graham Skinner who directed it towards Ballarin, and he swiftly shot it through the fivehole to tie up the game. The Red Wings were all over the place energywise for the next two periods. For a couple minutes they would be out on the ice firing shots and exuding electric energy and then for the next five, they would be dragging their feet. The Terriers caught them twice while they were lagging and were able to make the final score 3-1. Final shots were 40-24 for the Terriers with Young in net for the Wings. The Red Wings finally return to home ice this Friday to host the La Ronge Ice Wolves. The second last regular season home game for the Wings will be in honour of KidSport and their Goals

for KidSport program. For every home-team goal scored during the regular SJHL season, the program donates $20 to KidSport (up to 1,000 goals). Trident Plumbing & Heating is giving $25 for each home goal scored during the game on Friday. To this date the Red Wings, have contributed nearly $13,000 to the local KidSport chapter through this program. Before the game, the total dollars raised by the Weyburn Red Wings from the 2018-2019 season will be presented to KidSport Weyburn and a new SaskEnergy Volunteer Champion will be recognized. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. KidSport assists children of families facing financial obstacles to participate in community sport programs. Participation in sports gives kids the opportunity to learn vital life skills such as teamwork and responsibility.
