Fire and Protective Services Bylaw open for review The Fire and Protective Services Bylaw for the City of Weyburn received its first and second reading by Weyburn City Council at its April 26 meeting, and is now open for review by residents. Council has requested that feedback and questions on the proposed bylaw (which will be replacing the 1997 Fire Prevention Bylaw) be submitted to the City Clerk’s office no later than May 5, 2021. View the proposed Fire Protective Services in its entirety on the City of Weyburn website or explore the topics below, which highlight some significant additions and updates to the bylaw. Significant additions in the 2021 bylaw that impact home and building owners include: • New false alarm fee:

The Weyburn Fire Department may charge a fee after more than two false alarms at the same address, in the same calendar year. • Permit requirements for fire protection systems: Permits are now required in the City of Weyburn for work on fire protection systems. Qualification of individuals/companies and technician licenses are critical to safety when installing and maintaining these systems. For years, the Weyburn Fire Department has been providing services to the community that are in line with legislative fire standards like the Fire Safety Act and National Fire Code. These are some important items for residents to remember regarding open burning in their backyards:

• Open Air Fires and Fire Pits: Open air fire permits: Fire permits are required by the owner/occupant prior for open fires at the specified address. • Permitted burning materials: Only charcoal, briquettes, cut seasoned wood and manufactured fire logs are permitted for burning within city limits. • Prohibited burning materials: Burning of garden refuse, other refuse or waste materials are not permitted within city limits, which reinforces provincial environmental acts. Construction waste and wood pallets are not permitted. Also included in the updated bylaw are clauses significant to national fire, building, health and environmental standards to promote the safety of residents and modernize the City’s document.
