Weyburn Comp Eagles advance to 5A Provincial Championships
The Weyburn Comp Eagles football team was in top form on Saturday, as they trounced the Greenall Griffins from Balgonie by the score of 44-2 to win 5A provincial semi-final.
The Eagles will now travel to Saskatoon on Fri day, Nov. 11, to play Bish op Mahoney for the 5A Provincial Championship, with the game to start at 2 p.m. Weyburn is the de fending provincial cham pions, after beating the Griffins last year to claim the title.
In the game on Satur day, played at Leibel Field in Regina, Xander Shane made 15 rushes for 121 yards and one touchdown, while Owen Istace had 12 rushes for 96 yards and one touchdown. At quarter back, Conner Kerr had one rushing touchdown and made two passing touch downs, with a total of 120 yards in passing.

son had two catches for 71 yards and made one touchdown; Chayton For nwald had a catch to make 14 yards and scored one touchdown; and Kaleb Berg had one catch for 35 yards. Kicker Carter Houghton went three-forthree in field goals.
On defense, Berg had six tackles and one inter ception; Nolan Uhren and Jarret Hayward made three tackles and one deflection each; Tiki Umbach made a QB sack and had one inter ception, with Sanderson also made an interception.
Looking ahead to Fri day’s championship game, coach Jody Kerr said of their opponents, “We have watched the Saskatoon city championship and see that BJM is a good physical football team. They move the ball on offense with a balanced attack of run and pass and cover lots of space on defense showing differ ent fronts and pressures.”
He noted they know a few players from their in volvement in Football Sask programs, and they will include them in the game planning.
“For us, we need to get healthy real fast. Last week when we prepared for Bal gonie, we had six starters out until Thursday or Fri day with the flu and that was tough to prepare. If we can have a solid week of practice, I am sure we will play our best football this Friday in Saskatoon,” said coach Kerr.
In September, the Eagles went up to Sas katoon for an exhibition event, so they are familiar with the field and condi tions they may face.
“With the weather changing outside and a probable -15 temperature for game time on Friday, we will make sure to spend lots of time outside to get ourselves used to the game time conditions,” said Kerr.
Red Wings edge out Broncos

of 5-4, then on Saturday night, the leagueleading Battleford North Stars
out the Red Wings by the score of 4-3.
The Red Wings led 2-0 at the end of the first per
iod, and were up 4-2 at the end of the second as they brought home the win.
Ty Mason scored the first goal at 4:36 of the first period, assisted by Blake Norris and Matteo Tur rin, then four minutes later Ethan Whillans stole the puck at the blueline and went in alone to score.
Humboldt got one back in the second, before the Red Wings’ Simon Pollock scored from Matthew Re idy to maintain the lead.
The Broncos answered two minutes later, and Weyburn scored with 22 seconds to go in the period, with Max Monette getting the goal on assists from Lu cas Jeffreys and Pollock.
Humboldt scored at 12:27 of the third, but Mason got his second goal of the game, with assists from Eduard Wruck and Braigh LeGrandeur. The Broncos came close with a late-game score with one minute to go, but Weyburn held on for the win.
Both teams scored once on the powerplay Boston Gelowitz was in net for Weyburn for the full game, saving 33 of the 37 shots that came his way.
In Saturday’s game, the North Stars scored 18 seconds after the first puck drop, and then added a second goal some 15 min utes later. Team captain Reidy got the Red Wings on the board later in the period, assisted by Riley See and Jordan Edwards.
The Red Wings tied the game in the second period
on a goal by Sam Boldt, as sisted by Jackson Hassman and Norris, and Mi-Kwan Tallman gave the Wings a brief lead at 7:38, with as sists to Monette and Mason.
After a rough play where Turrin was ejected with a five-minute ma jor, the North Stars scored twice on that powerplay to give them the 4-3 lead, which was the final score.
Gelowitz was in net for nearly 58 minutes, and was pulled for the extra attacker, but the score stayed 4-3. He saved 26 of 30 shots on net.
Friday’s game was also the KidSport game for the Red Wings, as KidSport had a table in the lobby to sell chuck-a-pucks and raffle tickets. As part of a program called “Goals for KidSport” set up by SaskEnergy’s network of plumbing and heating con tractors, $20 is donated for every home goal scored in the SJHL to KidSport.
Trident Plumbing and Heating is the SaskEnergy Network local member, and they presented $1,400 to the Weyburn KidSport committee, as a result of teams scoring 70 goals against the Wings last year. Over the last eight seasons, the Red Wings have raised over $20,180.24 through Goals for KidSport.
The Red Wings will have a number of road games coming up, includ ing a pair of games in La Ronge on Nov. 18-19. The Red Wings then play in Wilcox against the Hounds on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

Amy Swayze was in net for the full 60 minutes, sav ing 36 of 41 shots.
The next action for the Gold Wings will be on Wednesday, Nov. 9, as
host the Notre Dame Hounds with the puck dropping at 7:30 p.m. They will then travel to Regina for a game on Saturday, Nov. 12.
