The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings won on home ice and lost in a road game over the weekend, before taking a break until after New Year’s.
The Wings hosted the Notre Dame Hounds on Friday night, and doubled up to win by a score of 6-3, then lost 3-0 in Humboldt to the Broncos on Saturday evening.
In the final home game of the calendar year, Jackson Hassman opened the scoring in the first period for the Red Wings, with assists by Ryley Morgan and Ty Mason.
The Hounds tied the game halfway through the period, and Weyburn’s Max Monette restored the lead near the end of the period, with assists from Matthew Reidy and Simon Pollock.
Elijah Anderson scored unassisted on the powerplay in the second, then Jakob Kalin scored the first of two goals on the night,
assisted by Mason and Monette.
Braigh Legrandeur scored his first goal as a Red Wing in the third period, and after Notre Dame got one back, Kalin scored his second goal, with LeGrandeur and Matteo Turrin assisting. The Hounds scored late in the game on the powerplay to finish out the scoring.
Matt Schoephoerster was in net for the Red Wings, stopping 29 of 32 shots.
Schoephoerster also had the goaltender duties in Humboldt, where one goal was scored in each period. He played well, being named the game star for the Red Wings, as he saved 40 of the 43 shots on net.
The Red Wings are now off until the weekend of Jan. 6 and 7, when they play the home-and-home series against the Estevan Bruins, starting in Estevan, and then hosting the Bruins on Jan. 7 at 7 p.m.
The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Gold Wings dropped two home games to the Saskatoon Stars on the weekend, and are now off until after New Year’s. They lost 6-0 on Saturday evening, and then 5-3 on Sunday afternoon, both played at Crescent Point Place.
In the Saturday game, Amy Swayze was in net, and stopped 34 of the 40 shots made on net.
The game on Sunday was closer, as the two teams were tied 2-2 after the first period.
The Gold Wings’ Abigail Manz scored the first goal of the game three minutes in,
assisted by Kaydance Ray. After two goals by the Stars, Manz tied the game with her second goal, assisted by Ashton Bender and Ray.
The Gold Wings briefly held the lead when Bender scored shorthanded and unassisted in the second period, but the Stars then scored two goals on the
power play, and added one more power play goal in the third period. Hailey Sibbald was in net for the Gold Wings, and stopped 37 of 42 shots on net.
The next game for the Weyburn Gold Wings will be a road game on Saturday, Jan. 7, versus the Prince Albert Bears.
Both the Midale Mustangs and Yellow Grass Wheat Kings were busy with games in the Big Six Hockey League over the weekend.
The two teams went head-to-head on Friday evening in Midale, and Yellow Grass came out with a 5-2 win. Mack Metheral for the Wheat Kings had the lone goal of the first period, assisted by Burke Johnstone.
Zach Douglas for Yellow Grass scored in the second period, assisted by Dylan Frey, then the Mustangs got on the board with an unassisted goal by Devon Johnson.
Riley Knoll then restored the two-goal lead for the Wheat Kings, assisted by Luke Niemegeers and Drew Fellner. Logan Martinson of the Mustangs scored early in the third, assisted by Tayler Thompson and Kendall Oliver. Douglas then scored two goals to get a hattrick on the game, assisted both times by Knoll. Tanner Erickson was in net for Yellow Grass, and Devon Pompu was the goaltender for Midale.
The Mustangs then hosted Oxbow on Saturday night, and were edged out 7-6 by the Huskies.
The two teams traded goals in the first period, with Tayler Thompson scoring twice to Oxbow’s three goals. Dallas Kickley of the Mustangs scored twice in the second period, but Oxbow then scored three goals.
Midale scored twice in the third period, with Connor Burk and Devon Johnson getting the goals, and the Huskies added one more to claim the win.
Pompu was again in net for the Mustangs.
Yellow Grass hosted the Carnduff Red Devils for a game on Saturday evening, and it was decided on a shootout when they ended 4-4 in regulation time, and the visitors scored the winning goal.
The Red Devils scored four goals in the first period, then the Wheat Kings answered with three goals in the second, and one in the third to tie the game.
The Yellow Grass goals were scored by Knoll, Niemegeers and Frey in the second period, and by Cole Rooney in the third.
In the shootout, Matthew Plews of the Red Devils scored on his attempt, while Niemegeers, Douglas and Frey all tried scoring for Yellow Grass. Tanner Erickson was in net for the full 60 minutes and the shootout.
The Wheat Kings then visited the Moosomin Rangers on Sunday night, and were trounced by a 9-1 score. The lone Yellow Grass goal came late in the second period on the power play, by Douglas, assisted by Knoll. Nolan Bergen was in net for the Wheat Kings.
Both teams will be in action once more before Christmas. The Wheat Kings will be in Carlyle to play the Cougars on Friday, Dec. 23, and the Mustangs will travel to Oxbow to play the Huskies the same night, both games starting at 8 p.m.
The teams are then off until Friday, Jan. 6, when Midale will host the Redvers Rockets, while Yellow Grass will be in Moosomin to play the Rangers.
