Massive Reunion 2016 held for all former Weyburn students Classmates from many different generations came together in Weyburn, to connect and reminisce during the 2016 Reunion — Laurence Woodard of Weyburn was selected to be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, individual category, as player and builder — Overtime, a Junior Achievement company formed at the Weyburn Comp, wins the 2016 Canadian Chamber of Commerce Company of the Year award — Weyburn Comp student Zoe Molder is one of 14 high school students chosen for a leadership adventure on a tall ship, with the Oriole Youth Adventure Challenge — Weyburn Comp graduate Alex Hes attends the Next Generation Leaders Forum at Toronto’s York University — Deputy premier Don McMorris resigns from cabinet, after

he was charged with impaired driving — The Weyburn Syrian Refugee Commitee receives word that their first Syrian refugee would arrive in Weyburn in September — Weyburn city council to complete longterm study of the city’s landfill, with a view to improve and upgrade it; a proposal was accepted on the upper end of price quotes received from seven consultants — Red Wings hire Wes Rudy as their new head coach, and Tanner McCall as the new general manager and head scout — Advisory panel created to review the current Regional Health Authority structure and provide options to reduce the number of RHAs in Saskatchewan — Singer Tenille Arts prepared to head to the Discovery Week program for the Canadian Country Music Association.

improvements and upgrades have been made to the level of service provided by the Emergency Medical Services in the Sun Country Health Region — New report from CUPE Saskatchewan shows that understaffing and workload are critical issues in continuing care in this province — After three seasons at the helm of the Weyburn Red Wings as head coach and general manager, Bryce Thoma resigns from the club — Shortfalls in oil and potash revenue resulted in a $675 million deficit for the Saskatchewan government — The Weyburn Credit Union unveiled their new brand and logo, with the goal to represent all members and interests — Sun Country Health Region approved a $157 million budget for the 201617 year, during a special meeting.

Allan Johnson of the Southeast Regional Library looks over a historical display with Robert Porter during the 50th anniversary barbecue for the regional library held on Aug. 11. Robert is the son of James S. Porter, who was the first chairman of the regional library when it was first established in 1966, after he was asked by then-mayor Albert Onstad to be Weyburn’s representative. This display included books which were released in 1966, along with a history and overview of the development and growth of the region.

4-H marks 100th year in Saskatchewan

A colourful fireworks display goes off over the Weyburn fairgrounds on the evening of Aug. 20, capping off a 4-H regional rally hosted in Weyburn for southeast-area 4-H club. The rally, one of four around the province, was held to celebrate the 100th year of the 4-H movement in Saskatchewan.
A number of Weyburn city councillors put their name forward to run for the municipal election, with 14 candidates vying for the six councillor seats and two candidates facing off for mayor — Coun. Rob Stephanson was re-elected for his second term as president of the Canadian Association of Police Governance, the national body for police commissions — Brett Jones becomes the first former Weyburn Comp Eagles player to play in the NFL, when he made the 53-man roster of the New York Giants — Two area companies nominated for ABEX awards, to be presented by the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce; Pharmasave of Weyburn is nominated in the Service Award category, and Three Farmers company is nominated
for Young Entrepreneur of the Year award — Local recipients receive the Saskatchewan Order of Merit award, Jo Anne Bannatyne-Cugnet of Weyburn and Valerie Creighton of Stoughton — The inaugural recipients of the Esso Cup Legacy Scholarship are announced by the Southern Range Gold Wings — Donald Alexander, a student at Queen Elizabeth School, is named as Weyburn’s youth ambassador for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation — A group of Weyburn volunteers with the Days for Girls organization are working to create sanitary supplies for girls and women in Third World countries — Special Update on Agriculture Section: Upper Souris Watershed Association encourages farmland owners to restore wetlands.
