Big Six hockey getting close to playoff dates Roughly one month of regular action is left in the Big Six Hockey League, before the playoff standings will be decided. In the west division of the Big Six Hockey League, the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings have a strong claim on second place with 18 points. The Bienfait Coalers are in first place with 25 points. The Midale Mustangs are currently ranked third place in the west division with nine points. In recent game action, the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings won 6-5 over Redvers on Jan. 6, then lost 4-3 to Oxbow on Jan. 7. The Wheat Kings then lost 4-3 in a shootout to Bienfait on Jan. 12. The Midale Mustangs won 3-2 over Carlyle on Jan. 6, and lost 9-4 to Wawota on Jan. 7. In the top scoring leaderboard, Brad Tomiski from the Mustangs is ranked sixth and Brendan
Vertefeuille from Yellow Grass is ranked ninth. The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings will be in Carlyle on Friday evening. The next home game for the Wheat Kings will be Sunday, Jan. 22 when they host Wawota. Regular action will be held until the Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3 and 4 weekend. The Senior A South quarterfinal between Bienfait and Milestone for the 2016-2017 Saskatchewan Hockey Association provincials will start on Friday, Jan. 27 in Bienfait. Game two will be held in Milestone on Friday, Feb. 10, and game three, if needed, will be held in Milestone on Monday, Feb. 13. In the other quarterfinals, Carnduff will face Grenfell in the Senior B, Wawaota will face Theodore in the Senior C, Carlyle will face Ochapowace in the Senior S, and Radvers will face Wilcox in the Senior D.

Panther Drilling Wings drop two to Broncos The atom AA Panther Drilling Wings hosted Swift Current Broncos with a doubleheader. In their Sunday game, the Drilling Wings lost 7-5 to Swift Current. Goals were scored by Owen Istace assisted by Carter Gervais and Andon Hoff; Hoff, assisted by Istace; Silas Stein, assisted by Justin Whitrow and Vlad Szczecinski; Stein scored again, assisted by Whitrow; and Gervais assisted by Conner Kerr and
Noah Kopec. During their Saturday game, the Wings lost 5-4 to Swift Current. The Atom AA Panther Drilling Wings hosted the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday at Crescent Point. Goals were scored by Stein, unassisted; Whitrow with Kerr assisting; Istace, unassisted; and Gervais, with Istace assisting. The atom AA Panther Drilling Wings will travel to Regina this weekend for a tournament.
Atom DQ Blizzards win home tournament Members of the Weyburn atom DQ Blizzards gather after winning gold at the first-ever atom girls hockey tournament, held in Weyburn on January 14 and 15. Teams included two from Weyburn, and those from Regina, Saskatoon, Williston and Rivers, Manitoba. The Weyburn DQ Blizzards went undefeated in round robin play. They won 6-2 over the Williston Coyotes in the final game to win gold. The DQ Blizzards are also in first place in the South Sask Female Hockey League, with a record of 14-2-1.
