Weyburn Comprehensive School holds 54th annual awards night

Top academic awards, scholarships presented The academic awards, scholarships and bursaries were presented to the top achieving students at the Weyburn Comprehensive School at the 54th annual awards night on Wednesday at the Cugnet Centre. One of the top academic awards, the R.C. Smith General Proficiency Award was awarded jointly to Tyler Ochitwa and Delaney Gordon, based on a combination of their average and Block W points. The T.C. Douglas Medals were presented to those with the top averages for boys and girls. The top winner for girls was Jordyn Pelechaty with an average of 97.14 per cent, and the runner-up was Zoe Douglas with 96.5 per cent. Pelechaty also received a Weyburn Credit Union scholarship of $1,000, and the Weyburn Rotary Club scholarship of $1,500. The top winner for boys was Tyler Ochitwa with an average of 97.43 per cent, and the runner-up was Mitch Bellefleur with an average of 97.29 per cent. Ochitwa also was presented with the Capt. Juli-Ann MacKenzie Memorial Bursary of $1,000, a scholarship from Prairie Sky Co-operative Association of $1,000, one of the Tony and Madeleine Moser Memorial Scholarships of $1,000, the Weyburn Comp Leadership Award of $1,000, and a Weyburn Credit Union R.S. Williamson-Eliford Mott Memorial Scholarship of $1,000. Bellefleur won a Weyburn Comp student scholarship of $1,000. The Tom Zandee Humanitarian Award was presented to Garett Hoffart. The award recognizes a student who gives of himself or herself in a selfless way and has a positive and giving attitude. The winner is voted on by the staff of the Comp. Hoffart found out the night before the awards night that he will receive a $10,000 McDonalds scholarship for western Canada. He was also presented with the Weyburn Comp’s Citizenship Award of $500. The Access Scholarship for $200 was awarded to Ashton Sinclair. The Beta

Co-winners of R.C. Smith General Proficiency Award Delaney Gordon and Tyler Ochitwa are presented with the R.C. Smith General Proficiency Award by principal Wade Oberg at the Comp School’s annual awards night. The criteria for the award includes a minimum 80 per cent overall average or higher, plus at least 40 Block W points, which are awarded for extracurricular activities at the Comp. Two $1,000 scholarships from Jerry and Orlanda Mainil were presented, to Laura Hanson and Hunter Dugan. Hanson also was presented with the Parrish & Heimbecker bursary of $400, and the South Country Equipment Ag scholarship of $500.

Dugan also received a Weyburn Legion bursary of $1,000, and a Sask Youth Apprenticeship award of $1,000, with the second one going to Josh Juravle. The other two Legion bursaries went to Braydon Johnston and Hanna Moser. The Kate Myers Scholarship of $1,000 each was presented to Taylor Kyle and Jaime Wagner. Two $250 bursaries from the Masonic Lodge Latonia were presented to Kelsey Clark and Laurel Oberkirsch. Oberkirsch also received a Prairie Sky Co-operative scholarship of $1,000, an RM of Weyburn Memorial Award for $500, a Saskatchewan Union of Nurses Local 63 bursary of $1,000, a Weyburn Credit Union scholarship of $1,000, and a Weyburn Fire Brigade bursary of $500. The Stella Swertz Nursing Award, which is new and matches the SUN bursary of $1,000, went to Kelly Bonneau, who also received the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce bursary of $500, and the Weyburn Kinsman and Kinette scholarship of $500. The Stewart Steel bursary of $500 went to Declan Hoffland. Two other $1,000 scholarships in memory of Tony and Madeleine Moser were also presented, to Jada Kot and Bryden Rumpel. The Violet Delrose Moore Memorial Scholarship of $500 went to Drew Paquette. The Violet Delrose Moore English scholarship of $500 went to Jordan Zackrisson. The Weyburn Comp School Kinolta award of $500 went to Bailee Bourassa. The second scholarship from the Weyburn Rotary Club went to Sydnie Butz. The Weyburn Wildlife Federation bursary of $1,000 went to Carlee Clarke. The Weyburn Young Fellows Don Murray Memorial bursary of $1,000 was presented to Carly Anderson. A new award, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall scholarship of $500 will be presented to a Grade 11 student in the fall, to Sydnee Phillips.

T.C. Douglas Medal-female Principal Wade Oberg presents Jordyn Pelechaty with the female T.C. Douglas Medal at the Comp awards night, as she had the top overall average for girls in Grade. 12, with an average of 97.14 per cent. The runner-up was Zoe Douglas, who had an average of 96.5 per cent.

The Weyburn Comprehensive School presented their activity awards at their 54th annual awards ceremony on Wednesday evening in the Cugnet Centre. These awards recognize all extracurricular activities, including sports, band, choir, drama and the SRC. The sports awards began with badminton. The award for excellence went to Travis Friedrick and Curtis Regnier, and the coach’s award went to Bayley Farr. For girls basketball, the MVP was Jada Kot, the coach’s award went to Kylee Adacsi, and the leadership award went to Taylor Anderson. For boys basketball, the MVP award was shared by Bryden Rumpel and Adair Borys, the leadership award was shared by Tyler Ochitwa and Nicholas Cuthbert, and the coach’s award went to Spencer Anderson. In junior boys basketball, most improved was Thomas Goranson, the MVP was Walker Happ and the coach’s award went to Rhett Ripplinger. For cheerleading, Olivia Bocian was recognized for dedication, Jordyn Pelechaty and Sarah VanDeSype were awarded for excellence, and Tyra Sandiford won the coach’s award. On the pom squad, the award of excellence went to Jaime Wagner, and Kate Gibbs won the coach’s award. For cross-country running, the coach’s award went to Spencer Anderson and the award of excellence went to Braeden Junk. In boys curling, the coach’s award went to A.J. Mitchell, the Emil Porth Award went to Jaedon Miller, the most dedicated award was presented to David Swenson and most improved was Garett Hoffart. In girls curling, Laurel Oberkirsch won the Bob Petit award, and for mixed curling, Rachel Ryan won the award of excellence. For football. the Allen Moffat award went to Scott Jones, the Al Watson award went to Austin Lund, and the coach’s award was presented to Reece Skjonsby. In golf, the MVP was awarded to TJ Fox. In girls soccer, the award of excellence went to Emma Lees, the coach’s award went to Tyra Sandiford, and the WSA dedication and leadership award went to Morgan King and Alyssa Bennett. For girls volleyball, the award of excellence went to Zoe Douglas and Payge Crozier, most improved was Cam Brown, and the coach’s award went to Jeena Johner. For boys volleyball, the MVP was Bryden Rumpel, and the coach’s award was shared between Jaedon Miller and Jorden Zazula. In junior girls volleyball, the MVP was shared between Jordyn Pelechaty and Madison Busch, and most improved was Moriah Busch. For wrestling, the male wrestler of the year was Braydon Johnston, the female wrestler of the year was Katelyn Franklin, the most improved was Carter Barrett and the coach’s award went to Ryan Verbeem. The Super Block W Athletic award went to Bryden Rumpel, who also won as Male Athlete of the Year, while Jada Kot was Female Athlete of the Year. In band, the most valuable player was Jordan Zackrisson, the outstanding woodwind was Delaney Gordon, the outstanding brass award went to Bryan Erbach and the outstanding percussion award went to Kearstin Pfeifer. In the choral awards, the most valuable award went to Laurel Oberkirsch, the outstanding female was Kristen Keith, the outstanding male was Mitch Bellefleur and the excellence award went to Kearstin Pfeifer. For drama/musical, the Andrea Eckel Award went to Mitch Bellefleur, the award for dedication and excellence went to Taylor Kyle, the director’s choice award went to Jordan Zackrisson, and the coach’s award went to Dawson Alexander. For the SRC, the gavel award went to Tyler Ochitwa and Garett Hoffart, the advisor’s award went to Brogan Regier and Samuel Ferguson, the award of excellence went to Tanaya Daku, the “Heart of the SRC” award went to Suzanne Stables, the SRC Spirit Award went to Tyler Ochitwa and Garett Hoffart, and the treasurer’s gift went to Jordan Zackrisson. For the yearbook, the Royal Purple award went to Carly Anderson, and the advisor’s award went to Chrisanto Fesalbon. The Performing Arts Award went to Delaney Gordon, the Comprehensive Award went to Tyler Ochitwa, and the Social award went to Jordan Zackrisson and Delaney Gordon.
