The Prince’s Trust

GET INVOLVED

Open to 16-25 year olds, the Prince’s Trust Team programme is a 12-week personal development course offering work experience, practical skills, community project, qualifications and a residential. As a member of the team you will work on life skills such as: • team building • confidence

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award We’re proud to be one of only a handful of education providers in Dorset to offer students the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE). That’s all well and lovely you say, but what is it? The DofE is the world’s leading achievement award for young people aged 14-25. Designed to inspire, guide and support you in your self-development, the DofE is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities. You will design and follow your own programme of challenging

activities, learn new skills, make new friends and gain a sense of achievement. Above all, it’s a great laugh. You will be able to undertake either your Bronze Award or Silver Award, each consisting of four sections (Volunteering, Skills, Physical and Expedition). We’re the largest provider of NCS is the region. It’s a free, three-part programme and takes place in spring, summer or autumn. You will: • get active – enjoy an action-packed week away tackling activities like rock climbing, surfing and kayaking • get involved – stay away from home and get to know your local community. You will develop skills for work and life and design a social action project that can make a real difference to where you live • make your mark – you will return home to deliver your project. And when you’re taking part you’ll be gaining valuable skills that employers look for, such as leadership, team work, decision making, performing under pressure, as well as making new friends. So whether you’re playing for a College team, learning to sail, or building a raft with your mates, our sports facilities will help you discover more about yourself.

MEET OUR STUDENTS OF THE YEAR 2014 MAXINE MOORE Information & Communication Technology & overall Student of the Year Maxine has cerebral palsy, but despite her physical difficulties, she hasn’t let this stop her ambition to achieve high. She was the highest performing student in her year and her aptitude for software development was reflected in all of her submissions. SHAUN WARD Engineering & Manufacturing Student of the Year With a strong interest and talent in engineering, Shaun quickly grasped new concepts and found ways to further develop them. Keen to acquire the necessary skills to improve his prospects, he also studied A Level maths alongside his engineering course. GRACE ASTON Health, Public Services & Care Student of the Year Grace won Student of the Year for her area for giving 100% to her studies and using every opportunity to further her own learning. Her desire to succeed along with her mature approach to study was a positive influence on the rest of her group.

MAX TURNEY Construction & Built Environments Student Of the Year Max has an excellent attitude towards learning and has come a long way during his time at college. He travels to college from Gillingham every day and recently achieved his Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry. Despite finding written work challenging, he adapted to college life really well, meeting deadlines and achieving an overall excellent grade for progress.

CHLOE MARKIN Retail & Commercial Enterprise Student of the Year Chloe started at the College as a Young Apprentice at the age of 14 and recently completed her NVQ level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing as well as two additional units within this qualification. Chloe was an exceptional student who continually strived to develop her skills and knowledge to achieve excellence in practice and theory. She proactively gathered feedback from clients, colleagues and her employer in order to perfect her skills.

OTHER STUDENTS OF THE YEAR RUTH WILD Arts, Media & Publishing Student of the Year Ruth achieved outstanding results in her studies on the Art & Design Photography course producing high standards of work at all times. Throughout her study she showed commitment and enthusiasm to the course, made valuable contributions to class discussions and assisted other students with peer learning. GEMMA HARRIS Sixth Form Student of the Year Gemma was a reliable and hard-working student who was always willing to go beyond the requirements of the course to further her understanding. She adopted an organised approach to her studies and her work benefited greatly from her high level of commitment and the hours spent revising. PIMVADEE VEERAPAD Travel & Tourism Student of the Year Pimvadee (Ping) was an extremely dedicated student. Not only was her attendance 99% for the year, but she consistently arrived to class on time with a positive and focused attitude. She was a great mentor and would always go the extra mile to help others. Respectful, reliable and trustworthy, she was an exemplary role model for the College and her course.

Adult Student of the Year Natalie was an extremely driven student who managed to balance a very busy family life with the demands that A Level study required. She was an active contributor in class discussions and went above and beyond to prepare for exams and homework. She showed admirable dedication to her studies and has clear goals, which she is focused on achieving.

Life & Work Student of the Year Martin has a learning difficulty and a disability, but he did not let this be a barrier to his achievement. Over the past year he grew in confidence, became more independent and acted as a great motivator for his fellow classmates.

OLIVIA MCLAUGHLIN Step Up Student of the Year Olivia enrolled on the Step Up course after 4 years of being out of mainstream education. Home schooled prior to this, she lacked confidence when she first arrived at college and was extremely anxious about starting education again. However, she worked hard to overcome her anxiety and consistently displayed a positive attitude and determination to succeed.

WENDY KERLEY Access Student of the Year Managing a family of four children, as well as suffering a number of serious health issues would be enough to cause anyone to struggle with their studies, but Wendy remained focused and committed to her course despite these challenges. Her work was of a consistently high standard, she make valuable contributions to class and was highly regarded by both staff and fellow students.

The Student Services team provides information, advice, help and support at every stage, sensitively and in confidence. The team works closely with teaching staff to ensure an effective support system for each student, according to individual needs. Counselling is a confidential service available to all students at the College whether full-time or part-time. Experienced counsellors are available for one-to-one confidential appointments. The College Chaplaincy team has a dedicated multi-faith room which is used for prayer or quiet contemplation and is open to all.

There are also specialised workshops organised to prepare you for your university application. Personal advisors work alongside college staff to provide independent, impartial advice and guidance.

Regular feedback Parents’ evenings provide an opportunity for more detailed conversations about progress, so

you’re fully informed about progress and predicted results. A safe and secure environment We issue all students with a photo ID badge, which they will need to access services and exams. Our students tell us they feel safe on campus and we have a dedicated safeguarding officer whose primary responsibility is ensuring our students continue to feel this way. APPRENTICESHIPS & WORK-BASED LEARNING If you’re already employed or want to train on the job, an Apprenticeship or Work-Based Learning (WBL) qualification will allow you to get qualified, get paid and get a career all in one go. To do an Apprenticeship, you need to be able to demonstrate that you have the potential, motivation

and commitment needed to gain the high quality skills demanded by business and industry. Although you do not need any formal qualifications to start, you shouldn’t be fooled into thinking they’re an easy option. Apprenticeships can be demanding, but also very rewarding.

Apprenticeship opportunities: Accountancy, Brickwork, Business Administration, Carpentry & Joinery, Customer Services, Electrotechnical, Engineering, Hairdressing, Health & Social Care, Hospitality & Catering, Motor Cycle & Motor Vehicle, Plumbing, Retail, Sport, Stonemasonry, Fabrication & Welding, Painting & Decorating, IT Application, Childcare. Apprenticeships are a great way to gain valuable work experience and some of the most successful chefs and business people all started their careers as apprentices. Before you start, you’ll undertake a selection test and will be interviewed by one of our assessors. The assessor will identify your suitability for the programme, so it’s important to demonstrate your commitment and motivation. If you’re not already in employment, we’ll put you forward for interviews with suitable employers. If we don’t have a suitable placement, we’ll advise you on how to look for and secure an Apprenticeship place for yourself.

How does it work? You’ll work with your employer to gain skills within the workplace. Most of your training will take place with your employer and college attendance will vary according to which level and which vocational area you’re in. A learning plan will be drawn up to determine what’s best for you as an individual and you will receive guidance and support from one of our assessors.

The IT industry is at the heart of everyday life and central to making any business work. The industry covers a wide range of roles and requires some technical knowledge, from the methodical skills of a software developer to the management skills of a project manager. This course is taught in a dedicated computer suite and will develop your skills in software such as Python, Adobe Dreamweaver and Photoshop.

ANIMATION FOR GAMES & MEDIA BTEC LEVEL 3 EXTENDED DIPLOMA 

One of the largest areas for employment in the IT industry is software development and this course will help you to develop a wide range of skills with a specific focus on computer programming and software development. Taught in a dedicated computer suite you will explore software including Photoshop, CSS, Python. C++ and Visual Studio. You will explore a variety of industry-related topics such as; graphic storytelling, game art, 3D environments and character modelling, digital graphics and, of course, animation. You will learn in a state of the art media centre that has a full HD TV studio, lecture theatre and interactive media classroom complete with high spec gaming PCs.

There are strict government guidelines in place both for organisations and individuals within the childcare sector. It is therefore essential to gain a qualification if you want to look after children. This course includes theory and practical work and covers topics such as growth and development, supporting babies to play and self-development.

This work-related course uses a mixture of theory and practical work to develop your understanding of the specialist areas in the sector. This course is for those who work or want to work as a Bench Joiner in the construction sector. ELECTRICAL

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA 

This course equips you with the knowledge and craft skills of electrical installation. It is suitable for those who currently do not work within the electrical Industry (but may wish to do so). You will practice and be assessed in a secure environment on the installation of wiring systems together with the relevant theory of electrical installation. You will gain skills and knowledge in a wide range of electrical engineering aspects ensuring that you are able to work both competently and safely. ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA 

This course is for students with learning difficulties or disabilities who would like to develop their confidence and learn to become more independent. The workshops are designed for small groups and student support assistants are on hand to provide help as required. There is full-time support by a member of staff outside of workshop times, during breaks and to ensure that students get their transport home at the end of the day.

Enhancing your customer service and people skills is vital to working in this industry. This course will enable you to gain valuable work experience in the College’s own hair salon as well as in selected local salons. You will also participate in local and regional competitions and visit the Salon International exhibition. This course will not only enable you to gain valuable work experience, you will also participate in competitions, visit the Salon International exhibition and enhance your knowledge of a range of hairdressing techniques and processes.

You will learn to read, understand and plan music in a range of styles from classical to jazz, rock to dance. You will also learn to compose, sequence and record music in a wide variety of styles.

INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE ARTS & MUSIC 

This course is designed for those looking to progress through the creative disciplines. In the vocational elements of this course you will be introduced to art and design, and video and music technology.

- You must demonstrate an interest in music and the creative arts. - You must be prepared to work hard to progress to the next level of study - It is essential that you are a team player. You will need at least one of the following: - BTEC Foundation Certificate in a related subject - a standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade D - G - related work experience - other related level 1 qualification - some practical experience of an instrument, singing or aspect of music technology. MUSIC TECHNOLOGY BTCE EXTENDED DIPLOMA 

You will learn about music sequencing using Cubase, studio production, sampling, recording and publishing, as well as looking at the business side of music technology. You are allocated a personal tutor both to guide and to assist with any problems. As you will be working frequently with other students on the course, you will need to be cooperative, patient and flexible, open to new experiences and constructive criticism. POPULAR MUSIC BTEC EXTENDED DIPLOMA 

You will cover areas such as composing music, music theory and performance techniques. The styles you will study range from jazz to pop, rock to contemporary, and include musical theatre and electronic music.

Develop your knowledge and understanding of scientific principles and ethical issues through the study of sport, exercise and health. This qualification provides you with a firm theoretical and practical grounding, and prepares you for employment or higher education.

The course uses practical application and performance to support and reinforce the knowledge and understanding required to study aspects of instructing, coaching and leadership, fitness and training, physiology and health and safety.

This qualification prepares you to work in a supervised capacity with children and their families in a variety of settings and environments, within children’s services. This, as well as the Level 2 in Travel and Tourism, would be the minimum requirement to apply for children’s reps employment.
