Precedent Idea #1
Project Name: Relocatable House (Prototype) Location: Bath, England Architect: Invisible Studio Date: March 2018 The aim of the project was to create a low cost, versatile, usable space which could also be used as a kit of parts. This allows any self-builder to improvise or easily adapt to their needs. Whilst being created as a domestic space it can easily function as something else, such as a workshop. At the two gable ends there are interlocking polycarbonate panels to allow natural light into the space. The structure is cladded with corrugated fibreglass and steel. The interior is lined with sheets of pre-used shuttering plywood. At either end there is corrugated material which creates a small sheltered outdoor porch. Inside there is a living space that runs the entire length of the structure, there is a gas stove in the centre with a toilet and small cooking area at either side in the widest parts of the structure. In addition, there are also two ladders that give access to two sleeping platforms at either end of the structure, one can be accessed by a walkway over the living space. This project inspires the design through its shape and use of windows. The project shape is that of an elongated pentagon that has been extruded, this shape is aesthetically pleasing to look at and also practical in the way that it doesn’t allow for rain water to be collected. The use of windows allows natural light to flood the space and for the outside to be seen from within. Block, I. (2018). Low-cost micro home is made from timber and scavenged materials. Precedent Idea #2
Project Name: Woodland Cabin Location: Deciduous Wood (Not Specified) Architect: AR Design Studio Date: Summer 2019 This project aims to create a space to be used as guest accommodation and an independent space for the children as they grow. “The brief was to create a compact, off the grid, self-build ancillary space for the clients house, whilst also being of a simple design so work can be carried out by the client”. In addition to this, the allotted space was 25m2 and needed to sleep 4. The initial design started as a 6x4m box, it was then manipulated to maximise the amount of floor space available. To start, the roof was pitched to make space for a mezzanine, then on one side the volume was increased in order to incorporate storage without loosing floor space. The front truss was angled towards the north west to create a trap for the late sun whilst creating a sheltered terrace. This project inspires the design by using a large window and seperated spaces. The large rotated window at the front of the project allows for natural light to flood the space and to capture an image of the exterior space in great detail. The separated spaces allow for activities to be seperate and not disturb one another.
