This year marks the 40th anniversary of Masterpiece, the most honored and longest-running prime-time drama series on American television. And WGBH’s Rebecca Eaton, Masterpiece executive producer, has put together what audiences and critics are hailing as the series’ best season ever. “We opened in January with Downton Abbey, a beautiful and riveting four-part miniseries set in Edwardian England, which explores the intertwined lives of servants and aristocrats on the eve of World War I,” Rebecca says. “Audiences couldn’t get enough of it…so much so that we’ve commissioned new episodes for 2012! “This month, we’re following up with the story of another upper-class family and its servants: an update of the beloved Upstairs Downstairs (see page 10), a series that helped put Masterpiece on the map. It’s now 1936, and a new couple is moving into 165 Eaton Place. The new series is charming, romantic, touching and fresh.” The stellar cast includes original series creators Dame Eileen Atkins and Jean Marsh, who will reprise her Emmy Award-winning role as Rose, now promoted from parlor maid to housekeeper. How did Rebecca pull off this Masterpiece? “Well, there’s a great story,” she says. “It actually happened on a plane when Eileen Atkins, who starred in Masterpiece’s Cranford, was flying from LA to London with Heidi Thomas, the writer of Cranford. They sat together for 12 hours. By the end of the flight, the new Upstairs Downstairs had been hatched, with Heidi as the writer!” Masterpiece fans will be glad to know there are more ways than ever to experience your favorite dramas. More than 5,000 Twitter followers are gathering not just in front of their televisions, but also live online to talk about the broadcasts at twitter.com/masterpiecepbs. And more than 40,000 Facebook fans are using that social networking site (facebook.com/ masterpiecepbs) to discuss all things Masterpiece. As with all our major WGBH productions, you can watch Masterpiece online after the broadcast premiere at wgbh.org, using our video player. You also can experience Masterpiece up close and personal Saturday evening, April 9, when WGBH is hosting a 40th-Anniversary Celebration Party at our Brighton studios with special guests Alan Cumming (host of Masterpiece Mystery!), Rebecca and the entire Masterpiece team. For information and tickets, visit wgbh.org/masterpiece40thevent. “It takes wonderful scripts, timeless books and top talent to make great drama,” Rebecca says. It also takes you. We’re grateful for your generous membership support, which has allowed WGBH to create and deliver masterpieces for 40 outstanding years…with more to come.

George’s Home Run

While Marco tries to hit his first Little League home run, George gets to play scorekeeper. Unfortunately, he can’t remember the order of the numbers, so he isn’t getting it quite right. Marco helps out by using a catchy song to teach George how to count from 1 to 10. Then George returns the favor by agreeing to be a pinch runner for an injured Marco. Can a speedy little monkey run the bases fast enough for Marco to score his first home run? Curious George Fri, 4/1 at 8am on WGBH 2

Hoover’s Boys

When a devastating famine descended on Soviet Russia in 1921, it was the worst natural disaster in Europe since the Black Plague in the Middle Ages. Half a world away, Americans responded with a massive two-year relief campaign, championed by a new Secretary of Commerce, Herbert Hoover. The nearly 300 American relief workers, “Hoover’s boys,” would be tested by a railroad system in disarray, a forbidding climate and a ruthless government suspicious of their motives. By the summer of 1922, Americans were feeding nearly 11 million Soviet citizens a day in 19,000 kitchens. The Great Famine tells this story of America’s engagement with a distant and desperate people. The Father of Conservation

Nearly a century after his death, John Muir is remembered and revered as the father of conservation and the founder of the Sierra Club. He was a Scottish American who believed it was our responsibility as citizens to care for and protect our natural surroundings. Seeking Out African Roots

Black in Latin America, a new four-part series on the influence of African descent on Latin America, is the latest documentary from renowned Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Latin America often is associated with music, monuments and sun, but the six countries featured in the series—Haiti, dominican republic, Cuba, Brazil, mexico and Peru—share a secret history. twelve-and-a-half million Africans were shipped to the new World during the middle Passage. While more than 11 million survived the arduous journey, only about 450,000 of them arrived in the Us. the rest—more than 10.5 million—were taken to the Caribbean and Latin America and kept in bondage far longer than the slaves in the United states. these millions of Africans created new and vibrant cultures—compelling syntheses of various African, english, French, Portuguese and spanish influences. Can emerging technology defeat global warming? The US has invested tens of billions of dollars in clean energy projects as our leaders try to save our crumbling economy and our poisoned planet in one bold, green stroke. Are we finally on the brink of a green-energy power surge, or is it all a case of too little, too late? From solar panel factories in China to a carbon capture-and-storage facility in the Sahara Desert to massive wind and solar installations in the US, Nova travels the globe to reveal the surprising technologies that just might turn back the clock on climate change. Down by the Bay

Narrated by Robert Redford, this lively and timely series is about one of America’s greatest natural resources: San Francisco Bay. Shot in high definition, its four episodes focus on the geological, cultural and developmental history of San Francisco Bay and the larger northern California watershed, from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the Farallon Islands in the Pacific Ocean. This series explores the Bay’s evolution, how we almost lost and then saved the Bay, and how we are planning for the future. this two-part series from award-winning filmmaker Helen Whitney examines the complexities and contradictions of forgiveness. the film covers a wide range of stories, from infidelity to genocide. Among them: the extraordinary forgiveness of the Amish after their neighbor killed nine young Amish girls; the shattering of a family after the mother abandons her children and returns seeking forgiveness; and the atonement of a ’60s radical for killing a Boston policeman. in addition, the film explores rwanda’s attempt to “legislate” forgiveness in the wake of its genocide, and south Africa’s ambitious attempts to reconcile the nation after apartheid through its truth and reconciliation Commission. Radio Spotlight On the Air with Callie Crossley Award-winning journalist Callie Crossley celebrates a year of The Callie Crossley Show on 89.7 WGBH. With her considerable skills, experience and perspective, Crossley has expanded the range of high-quality news and information available to the New England radio audience. Crossley’s show takes a “these days” approach, choosing issues, culture and voices that reflect our region but often get short shrift in commercial media. And she is having a great time doing it. Crossley recently sat down to talk with WGBH’s Jennifer Goebel about her first year of live radio.

Q A

How has your first year on the air been?

It’s been exciting and challenging. I know those words can sound clichéd, but they capture the totality of the experience. I rehearse before I go on the air, but even with that, sometimes the craziest things happen that we couldn’t have anticipated. I’ve had to learn to roll with it because it’s live. It’s been a hard year, but my team and I have learned a tremendous amount. At the beginning, people would ask me when my show was on, and I would say, “Every day,” and then they’d ask, “Every day?” Now I understand the question mark at the end.

Q A

How has the show’s local focus worked out in this first year? It’s been exciting to see what can be done in a town that has a lot of media. We’ve been both surprised and pleased by how much material we’ve been able to find. My mission of having very different voices from the ones that are typically chosen to speak on any subject has worked very well. We get compliments all the time from people who tell me they’ve never heard of the person who came on my show and found them very interesting. That is very gratifying. So it’s been a good year.

Q A

What’s the biggest challenge you and your team face? There have been times when we’ve had a perfectly booked week—great guests, great subjects, all our shows laid out and beautifully thematic—and I come in Monday morning to find that guests have started dropping out. Someone is sick, someone can’t come and somebody is snowed in. It took us about six months to figure out what kinds of systems we need to have in place so that we can have the best possible response to these situations.

Q A

What are the some of the show’s highlights from the past year? We’ve had some really memorable interviews. I loved talking with foodie and former New York Times food critic Frank Bruni and with Isabel Wilkerson about her book The Warmth of Other Suns. We had a rollicking conversation with the Pie Ladies of Centerville, MA, who became famous after sending a chicken pot pie to Oprah (when she was on the Cape for Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s funeral). We also did a series of conversations called “The Genius Next Door” with four of the five McArthur Award winners in our area. And I hosted an intense conversation with City Councilor Ayanna Pressley and a Harvard student about the suit against the Cure Lounge for what the students describe as racist treatment. There have been so many great moments, it’s hard to pick just a few.

tions with one, two or even three guests and callers. When you take calls, you have to be able to pick up the threads of the conversation from wherever it might go. There are weeks when I have to read 500-page books in addition to preparing for all the other shows. I don’t believe in having people on if I haven’t read their books. And, sometimes I have to go out in the evenings to see performances that we’ll be featuring.

Q A

Q A

What’s a typical day like?

When I get to WGBH around 10am, I go right into the studio for pre-production. It may sound like I’ve had a leisurely morning, but actually I’ve been doing research at home since about 2am. I record show promos for the day and the week, and we pull the sound we use for our segments. At 11, I go to my office to get all the material in place for the day’s show. Then at 12:30, I head back down the studio to do the show. I’m on from 1 to 2. Immediately afterwards, we do a debriefing meeting until about 2:30. On Mondays and Wednesdays, I then head off to Harvard where I still work for the Neiman Foundation for Journalism. On the other days, I am here until about 5:30 working on upcoming programs with my producer. Then I go home, get something to eat, and start doing my homework for the next day. On Fridays, I tape three programs: my show, Beat the Press (Fridays at 7pm on WGBH 2) and Basic Black (Fridays at 7:30pm on WGBH 2), so I have three times the prep work.

Q A

How do you prepare for a show?

What do you enjoy most about doing the show? I enjoy hearing people say that they appreci ate both the vibe of the show and its focus. They like learning about local events and people that they otherwise wouldn’t have heard about. We have a measured pace so people have time to think about the topic and call in. I am very interested in what our callers have to say. One thing I’ve learned is that you can’t always tell who is listening—and we’ve had some surprising call-ins.

Q A

What are your goals for year two?

I hope to continue to build on what we’ve been doing, keep finding new voices, and tackle some bigger issues with more depth. I’d also like to do more with our website, and to continue using Facebook (facebook.com/ CallieCrossleyShow) and Twitter (@ CallieCrossley) to keep people connected with the show. Listen to The Callie Crossley Show weekdays at 1pm on 89.7 WGBH or online at wgbh.org, or download the podcast to listen anytime.

I do a lot of homework. I have to be on top of the subjects of the day to navigate conversaSchedules, program info, playlists: wgbh.org/897 23

WGBH, Boston’s NPR® Station for News and Culture Covering Climate… and Conflict By Peter Thomson, Environment Editor, The World

One of the biggest challenges in covering environmental issues for The World is capturing their complexity and context. That’s the nature of these stories—nothing related to the environment happens in isolation. Yet the connections between events and impacts can be subtle, indirect and often difficult to establish with certainty. A case in point: an environmental issue lurking deep behind this winter’s upheaval in the Middle East. There were many sparks that lit the fires of unrest in Tunisia and Egypt, but one was high food prices. Food price inflation in Egypt was greater than 20 percent last year. Food prices, in turn, are also affected by many things, but one is weather. In 2010, a series of droughts, heat waves and deluges around the world all led to poor harvests. Finally, extreme weather events themselves have many causes, but many experts believe that human-caused climate change is making them both more common and more extreme. In particular, many scientists are convinced that climate change contributed to last summer’s unprecedented heat wave in Russia. Russia lost

40 percent of its wheat harvest and banned exports, contributing to a global spike in wheat prices. Egypt, in turn, is the world’s largest importer of wheat, and so especially vulnerable to supply problems. Which brings us back to anger about high food prices there. So the dots connecting these political events with climate change are there, but those connections are murky, and part of a vast and immensely complex web of factors. To report on them risks sliding into conjecture and misinterpretation—that climate change somehow caused the turmoil. But not to report on them may be to miss an important part of the big picture, and fail to identify what even many in the US military see as a growing factor in conflicts around the world—what they call a “threat multiplier.” We chose to report on the possible links, with as many caveats as possible in a four-minute story. And we provided online links to resources that could help audience members dig deeper into the question. We think we made the right call. Others may have made the call differently. But that’s the nature of journalism, in which independent judgment plays as big a role as objective facts in helping to understand a very complex and murky world. Hear Peter Thomson’s report on the possible links between climate change and the January 2011 uprising in Egypt at theworld.org/2011/02/03/ food-prices-egypt-climate-change/.

Just two decades ago there seemed to be no limits to American power. But now, 9/11, the financial crisis and the rise of China are all reminders of what a different world we live in today. What should America’s role be in the new world order? Are we guilty of overreach or have we not been ambitious enough? This topic is debated by four of the world’s leading authorities and moderated by ABC News correspondent John Donvan.

A question that haunted Charles Darwin: If natural selection boils down to survival of the fittest, how do you explain why one creature might stick its neck out for another? The standard view of evolution is that living things are shaped by cold-hearted competition. And there is no doubt that today’s plants and animals carry the genetic legacy of ancestors who fought fiercely to survive and reproduce. But in this hour, hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich wonder whether there might also be a logic behind sharing, niceness, kindness…or even, self-sacrifice. Sun, 4/24 at 8pm

All Classical

99.5 All Classical is now also broadcast on 96.3 Back Bay/Beacon Hill

Off the Mic By James David Jacobs

One of the most rewarding aspects of classical music is also one of its most challenging characteristics: its relationship to time. Pop music was designed to tell its story in three minutes, and most forms of dance music are tailored to the physical endurance of those dancing to it. But in classical music, the listener experiences time according to the composer’s sense of flow, not the ticking of a clock. The convenience of the listener or of the radio programmer never enters the composer’s mind. But that very inconvenience helps make it special. Music exists in its own sense of time, different from that which we experience in our daily lives. Composers have myriad techniques for creating the flow and structure that define a work’s unique sense of time, and constantly strive to achieve a balance between making that flow unpredictable enough to be interesting while predictable enough to be lucid. You might think of the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony as one example, when we ride along on the engine of a four-note motif. I can attest to the power of music to change the listener’s attitude towards time. There was a period in my life when I was a busker, playing

cello on the street with one or two other musicians. We didn’t use any sort of amplification, so passers-by had to come in close to hear the music, creating a kind of oasis within the bustling city. We made many people late for their appointments because they just had to hear the end of a Bach trio sonata. I can also attest to the power of music to get to parts of the brain that other forms of communication can’t reach. The last time I saw my mother, a year before she died in the throes of Alzheimer’s disease, she couldn’t recognize any of her children and was unsure of her own name, but as soon as she heard a song she learned in her youth she would sing along. Talk about making people forget about time: through music, my mom forgot that she was supposed to be dying. As art forms go, classical music is messy; it doesn’t fit in a physical or temporal frame. It’s like the trees among the skyscrapers, refusing to be tamed. But, if you think about it, the way we usually measure time— in minutes, seconds and hours—isn’t any more “real” than music is. In fact, maybe music is more accurate after all, since it reminds us that time isn’t really minutes and seconds on a clock, but a growing, ever-changing journey. Listen to Classical Music with James David Jacobs on weekends from 7am–11am. Classical Music with Laura Carlo

Radio Online and On the Go How We Got Here Beyond The World’s daily broadcast on 89.7 WGBH we also have a several popular podcasts available at theworld.org, including reporter Jeb Sharp’s How We Got Here podcast. Sharp took time out of her busy reporting schedule to tell us about the podcast.

Q A

Where did the idea of the How We Got Here podcast come from? I cover all kinds of stories for The World, but I’m often most inter ested in the stories that dig into the history behind the news. We’re inundated with information these days, but not always with the context we need to understand it. When the podcast craze began in our newsroom two or three years ago I jumped at the chance to have a little more time and space to explore historical questions.

Q A

How do you find stories to include in the podcast?

They’re all around us. Take the protests in Egypt earlier this year. On the main broadcast, we were reporting what was happening in real time in Tahrir Square and elsewhere. On the podcast, I was exploring the life and times of Hosni Mubarak, the history of the Egyptian military and the role of women in Egyptian protest movements right back to 1919. There’s always a How We Got Here tale to tell. You can listen and subscribe to How We Got Here and find the rest of The World’s podcast at theworld.org/podcasts.
