The circus has captivated audiences for centuries. But few of us get the chance to look beyond the sawdust and lights to see what goes into creating the perfect performance and a thrilling show. Until now. This month, for the first time, WGBH takes you behind the scenes to reveal the lives of the men and women who create the magic and wonder of this enduring art form, in Circus (see page 9). The production team, whose previous credits include the Emmy Award-winning series Carrier and Frontier House, lived and traveled with the The Big Apple Circus for an entire season—capturing the training and rehearsals, the flubs and foibles, and the bravery and intensity of life, and work, in this tight-knit community of 150 adults who hail from around the world. “Public television doesn’t just swoop in, do five-minute interviews with people, and swoop out again,” says Ron Bachman, who with Maria Bruno Ruiz puts together WGBH’s television lineup for our multiple channels every month. “It requires an extraordinary commitment of time and resources to create a film like Circus…to combine cinema vérité with unscripted drama.” That’s the kind of magic Ron and Maria work hard to bring you every month. “We’re always looking for stories that offer quirky, unique perspectives you won’t find elsewhere,” Maria says, whether it’s an intimate look at the daily life of the most powerful man in the world (The President’s Photographer, see page 17) or rock icons John Lennon and Yoko Ono during their New York years (American Masters: LennoNYC, see page 15). “WGBH has loyal, passionate and vocal audiences,” Ron says. “Our aim is to make sure you have a diverse set of choices across our channels at any given time, with many of the featured programs produced right here at WGBH. And we appreciate it when people take the time to give us feedback. We definitely listen!” I encourage you to check out Circus and all the great programs your generous annual support makes possible, and then let Ron and Maria know what you think at wgbh.org/contact.

Our Furry Friends
Dogs have been domesticated for longer than any other animal on the planet. We treat our pets like part of the family. Now, new research is revealing what dog lovers have suspected all along: dogs have an uncanny ability to read and respond to human emotions. What is surprising, however, is new research showing that humans, in turn, respond to dogs with the same hormone responsible for bonding mothers to their babies. How did this incredible relationship between humans and dogs come to be? And how can dogs, so closely related to fearsome wild wolves, behave so differently? It’s all in the genes. Imagine
In October 2010, John Lennon would have been 70 years old. In December 2010, he will have been dead for 30 years. Yet, his art still haunts us. It still speaks to millions of people. WGBH presents two films in November about the legendary icon: Masterpiece Contemporary’s Lennon: Naked, starring Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who) in a film about the turbulent period in John Lennon’s professional and personal life following the unexpected death of Beatles manager Brian Epstein in 1967. And, American Masters tells the story of Lennon’s New York years, with unprecedented and exclusive cooperation from Yoko Ono, access to never-before-seen material from the Lennon archives and conversations with those closest to him. Message from the Past
Inspired by the Bible’s account of the splendor of his temples and palaces adorned in glittering gold and copper, countless treasure-seekers have set off in search of King Solomon’s mines. During the summer of 2010, Nova and National Geographic embarked on two groundbreaking expeditions to expose new clues buried in the pockmarked desert of Jordan. Life or Death Choices
When the moment comes, and you’re confronted with the prospect of “pulling the plug,” do you know how you’ll respond? Unfounded rumors of federal “death panels” grabbed headlines last summer, but the real decisions of how we die—the questions that most of us prefer to put off—are being made quietly behind closed doors. In this film, Frontline examines the complicated reality of today’s modern, medicalized death. Frontline/Facing Death Tue, 11/23 at 9pm on WGBH 2

Pete Souza is never far behind President Obama. In fact, sometimes he’s ahead of him. As the President’s chief White House photographer, Souza is the President’s shadow. Now, National Geographic follows Souza inside the Obama White House—aboard Air Force One, backstage at the State of the Union and into the heart of the West Wing. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at the everyday grit of the American presidency and a chance to see what it’s like to cover the most powerful man in the world, for history. Good Company
Stephen Sondheim has been a singular voice in the American musical theater and a true original in the pantheon of major American songwriters and composers. Beginning with his collaborations as lyricist on such fabled shows as West Side Story and Gypsy, to his breakthrough scores for Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods, Sondheim led the way from Broadway’s golden age into the increasingly ambivalent times of America’s postVietnam, rock’n’roll culture. Taped on the occasion of Sondheim’s 80th birthday in March 2010, Great Performances presents the New York Philharmonic’s gala all-star salute to a true Broadway legend. Radio Spotlight A New Way to Seay Mornings Bob Seay (pronounced “see”) joined WGBH as our new 89.7 morning host in October. If his voice sounds familiar, that’s because it is—Seay was WBUR’s weekend news announcer from 1998 to 2006, and comes to us from WRNI, Rhode Island’s NPR station, where he has been the Morning Edition host for the last four years. In the radio biz, there is very little Seay hasn’t done: from hosting to reporting to even managing a station. But Seay’s path has not been a straight line: he’s worked in theater companies, at Philadelphia’s Theater of the Living Arts, and even ran his own natural foods company on Cape Cod. WGBH’s Jennifer Goebel recently sat down with Seay to talk about his new role on 89.7 WGBH and how he got here.
Q A
How did you get into radio?
I began working for a daytime AM station in Plainfield, NJ in high school. In the summers, they were on until sunset with an extra two or three hours to fill, so that’s what I did. I managed
the college station when I went to Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA, and have since worked on both commercial and public stations in Boston, Rhode Island and on the Cape.
Q A
Have you always worked in radio?
No. When I was doing graduate work at Boston University, I became part of what was called the “BU Crew,” which supplied labor for Channel 2 television programs back in the ’60s. I didn’t finish my graduate program, but instead ran off with this theater company to produce a play— which actually made it to Off Broadway, and eventually won an Obie back in 1968. From there, I went to the Theater of the Living Arts in Philadelphia, and I worked with some unknown actors at the time (Morgan Freeman, Danny DeVito) and the famous set designer Eugene Lee. Then a friend and I decided to move to Hyannis and start a natural food business. It really was an idea ahead of its time—even though we were selling a lot organic foods, it wasn’t enough to sustain us both, so I applied for a position at WOCB in West Yarmouth, and became a news anchor. My news director, Ed Semprini, had covered the Kennedys on Cape Cod—he really taught me how to do radio news.
Q A
What is a typical day like for you as a morning host? I generally wake up at 3am—most people groan when I tell them that, but I’m a morning person. While I’m getting ready, I watch the overnight network news to see what’s going on. I get to work about an hour before we go on air, so I have time to go over everything. Preparing the “ballet” of Morning Edition is all a matter of timing—radio timing has to be very precise and the NPR clock is unforgiving, so I’m watching the clock very closely. Once we start, it goes very quickly, and then suddenly it’s over. When I’m off the air, I have time to look ahead to what’s in the news, who might make a good interview, and what other things people in our area might be interested in hearing about.
Q A
What are you looking forward to at 89.7 WGBH? There’s been a lot said about whether Boston can support multiple public radio stations devoted to news, and I think that we have an endless number of issues to discuss, and so much out there to learn about, that we’ll never get to them all even with two stations. What I have loved about almost every job I’ve had is that I’ve been in on the building of something—so I’m looking forward to trying some new things at 89.7. With such a strong signal, WGBH radio has an amazing opportunity to incorporate stories from all around New England.

On this program, Brian O’Donovan explores the origins of the band, and this dispute. Sat, 11/6 at 3pm Arts & Ideas

Off the Mic
By Jim Donahue, 99.5 Radio Engineer My relationship with the Boston Symphony started in the late ’70s while I was teaching “diction” at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. My work with BUTI (pronounced “booty”) gave me the opportunity to sit in on rehearsals, master classes and concerts. I have fond memories of seeing my musician heroes rehearsing, performing and just hanging out. The first time I met Leonard Bernstein was when he sat down next to me on a wall outside the Koussevitsky Estate “Seranak” and started chatting about his day. That was also the summer I was invited by a friend to her uncle’s house for a party. Little did I know that the “uncle” was the principal violinist at the time, Joseph Silverstein. When I first met Seiji Ozawa, he was tending bar at this bash. Tanglewood is beautiful, and you can’t help but be in awe of nature when you are in such beautiful surroundings. Nature also reminds you of its power with the rain, wind, hail and impressive lightning strikes. You may have heard an occasional storm roll through during a broadcast. A listener in California once sent me an email during a concert warning me of an impending storm he saw on a weather website. We’ve also had many “critter” related moments. Last summer a fox decided to take a nap beneath the stage only to be rudely awakened by the orchestra. It ended up fleeing during intermission, carrying some sort of snack in its mouth. Birds nest in the eaves, and you can usually hear them during the Sunday afternoon broadcast, chirping away. I thought a bird had left James Levine a “gift” during one of the concerts until I saw the white blotch on his shoulder start to move. Apparently, it was a moth hoping for a closer look at the score. The summer started with a bang this year when a spider’s nest hatched in the announcer’s booth over the head of my engineering colleague Nick Squire. The babies exploded everywhere, and Nick bravely did battle armed only with a vacuum cleaner. It was cute until we started finding more of the five-foot webs above the stage. The babies grew to be big spiders with legs the size of pencils. Ugh! It’s fun looking back. I feel like I am channeling my inner 20-something whenever I return to the Berkshires. I remember so clearly the days when I used to sneak into Symphony Hall as a student to see if I could find a seat. These days, I have the ultimate backstage pass.

Classical Music with Laura Carlo
Letters from the Masters
It’s a hectic world we live in: cell phones, computers, email, texting—doesn’t anyone write letters anymore? There was a time when letters were the only way to communicate across long distances. This month, host Laura Carlo shares some personal letters from the great composers— Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and many others. Hear what they wrote about their music, their families, their dreams…and even their rivals. Weekdays at 5am Classical Music with Laura Carlo
Keith’s Classical Corner
Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart joins morning program host Laura Carlo to share his musical pick-of-the-day. Sometimes the pieces are recognizable old favorites, sometimes they’re 21st-century pieces you’ve never heard before! Join Lockhart as he reveals the story behind the music and the inside scoop on the composers who wrote them. Weekdays at 8:30am Classical Music with James David Jacobs
Sunday Brunch
Sundays in November host James David Jacobs features the recorded legacy of the great conductor Bruno Walter (1876–1962). Walter worked as assistant to Gustav Mahler and later became one of the foremost interpreters of Mahler’s works, conducting the world premieres of “Das Lied von Der Erde” and the Ninth Symphony. These four programs feature the stereo recordings he made late in his life with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra (essentially the Los Angeles Philharmonic), including Brahms’s Third Symphony, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto (with Zino Francescatti), and an excerpt of a rehearsal (as well as the finished complete recording) of Mozart’s Linz Symphony. Leonard Bernstein called Bruno Walter “one of the saints of music—a man all kindness and warmth, goodness and devotion.” Weekends at 10am Classical Music with Cathy Fuller
Light
Throughout November, host Cathy Fuller explores music that seeks to evoke the mysterious and changeable qualities of light, beginning on 11/1 with Debussy’s Nocturnes. Debussy finished his three “Nocturnes” in 1899 and later wrote that the title was meant to suggest all the “various impressions and the special effects of light.” Light was a fascination for Debussy, and while he called the piece “an experiment with the various combinations of texture that can be made from one color—like a study in grays in the realm of painting,” he objected to the simplified concept of “impressionism” as applied to music.
