Ten years ago, our nation came together around the horror of the events of September 11th. So much of what has happened since then has been shaped by that tragedy. This month, WGBH explores the far-reaching impact of 9/11, from the “war on terror” to the healing power of music. We begin with Frontline’s Top Secret America. Since 9/11, WGBH’s Frontline has produced more than 45 hours of award-winning films documenting the terrorist attacks and America’s response to them. Now, veteran producer Michael Kirk has teamed up with Pulitzer Prizewinning journalist Dana Priest to investigate the dramatic changes that have reshaped America in the past decade, examining the dark side of America’s fight against terrorism. “Top Secret America is a film about the unchecked growth of the multibillion-dollar terrorism-industrial complex,” says Kirk, whose more than 30 years with WGBH’s Frontline and 200 national documentaries recently prompted The Washington Post to liken his work as a keen observer of society to that of Balzac. “Dana and I have approached the story hoping our mutual experiences reporting various aspects of this material can be combined to yield information that helps Americans understand some of what has happened since September 11, 2001.” With Nova, WGBH takes a different tack, offering a close-up look at the construction of One World Trade Center and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum on the hallowed 16 acres at Ground Zero. Shot over five years, with unique behind-the-scenes access from The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Nova’s Engineering Ground Zero explores the steep challenge of constructing safe, highly secure and energy-saving buildings that satisfy everyone’s expectations. We’re also stepping back and feeding the soul, with a special televised 9/11 memorial concert by the New York Philharmonic and an afternoon of music and programming that we’ll simulcast on 99.5 All Classical and 89.7 WGBH on Sunday, September 11. In times like these, the role of WGBH and public media is more important than ever. We’re tackling the big questions, promoting civil discourse and shining a spotlight on the power of music and the arts…all thanks to you.

Looking Back, Looking Forward WGBH looks back at the events that shaped our lives on 9/11, surveys where we are as a nation a decade after the tragedy and considers where we are heading. Some of the programs featured this month: Frontline looks at September 11 from four different perspectives: Top Secret America investigates how a decade of fighting terrorism has reshaped the country and asks whether it has made us safer; Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero explores the many spiritual questions that have come out of the terror, pain and destruction of Ground Zero; The Man Who Knew profiles FBI special agent John O’Neill, whose sounds of alarm about Al Qaeda went unheard; and The Man Behind the Mosque tells the inside stories of Sharif El-Gamal, a real estate developer, and of the victims’ relatives and anti-Islam activists who helped turn his project into a continuing battle over faith, values and the meaning of being American. Frontline/Top Secret America Tue, 9/6 at 9pm on WGBH 2 Frontline/Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero Wed, 9/7 at 10pm on WGBH 2 Frontline/The Man Who Knew Thu, 9/8 at 9pm on WGBH 2 Frontline/The Man Behind the Mosque Tue, 9/13 at 9pm on WGBH 2 Nova provides behind-the-scenes footage of the construction of One World Trade Center and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. This special captures the struggle of architects and engineers to make the buildings safe and highly secure under the pressures of a tight schedule, meet the demands of practical office space and “green” architecture and fill the public’s expectations of a fitting site for national remembrance. Nova/Engineering Ground Zero Wed, 9/7 at 9pm on WGBH 2 Follow the emotional journey of five New York Fire Department widows who, after the tragedy, are forced to try to make sense of the unimaginable, comfort their children and mourn their losses while the world watches— and who honor their hero husbands by turning tragedy into triumph. From the Ground Up Thu, 9/8 at 10pm on WGBH 2 The searing events of September 11 brought to life through the eyes of students at Public School 234 in New York City, the elementary school closest to Ground Zero on 9/11. Also features war zones where teachers, parents and mental health workers use innovative techniques to treat the emotional havoc war and violence inflict on children. September’s Children Thu, 9/8 at 6pm & 9pm on WGBH World 10 Full schedules: wgbh.org; Get magazine online: wgbh.org/gopaperless

Emily Rooney joins Callie Crossley and Dan Kennedy to discuss how the press has dealt with issues surrounding the reporting of 9/11 and terrorism. Greater Boston/Beat the Press Fri, 9/9 at 7pm on WGBH 2 Features highlights of the day’s memorial events marking the sites of the attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. Correspondents report from across the country on the personal perspectives of Americans as they look back on the events of 9/11 and the effects on their lives over the past decade. PBS NewsHour/America Remembers Sun, 9/11 at 8pm on WGBH 2 The New York Philharmonic performs Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, in honor of the victims of September 11, 2001. Conductor Alan Gilbert is joined by soprano Dorothea Roschmann, mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung and the New York Choral Artists. The performance will be framed with remarks on the tragic losses 10 years ago and the spirit of remembrance and renewal inherent in Mahler’s composition. Great Performances/The New York Philharmonic 10th Anniversary Concert for 9/11 Sun, 9/11 at 9pm on WGBH 2 A compelling range of stories, from personal betrayal to global reconciliation after genocide, provides an intimate look into the spontaneous outpouring of forgiveness. Forgiveness: A Time to Love and a Time to Hate (Parts 1 & 2) Sun, 9/11 at 9pm & 10:30pm on WGBH 44 Four days after the 9/11 attacks, Balbir Singh Sodhi was gunned down at his Phoenix-area gas station by a man named Frank Roque. Seeking retaliation for 9/11, Roque killed Sodhi and went on to shoot at a Lebanese American man and fire multiple rounds of ammunition outside an Afghan American family’s home. This film follows Balbir’s brother, Rana Singh Sodhi, as he attempts to fight the hate threatening his family and community. Global Voices/A Dream in Doubt Sun, 9/11 at 10pm on WGBH World

Radio Spotlight Boston’s Really Got a Hold on Phil Redo Phil Redo’s 30-year career in public and commercial radio has taken him from Boston to Chicago to Boston to New York and back to Boston again. The broadcast veteran, whose bona fides include an AP Award for editorial content and top general manager honors from Radio Ink magazine for three years running, recently was named managing director of 89.7 WGBH, Boston’s NPR® Station for News and Culture. In his new role, Redo—who previously worked with WGBH on the expansion of 89.7’s radio service with the launch of 99.5 All Classical—will guide overall strategy for 89.7’s news, information and cultural programs. Fresh off a conference on the future of public radio (he says it’s bright), Redo spoke with WGBH’s Tina Vaz about his plans for 89.7 WGBH, his Boston ties and his love of painting.

Q

Your career includes both public and commercial radio. What do you like about public radio, and what lessons from commercial radio will you bring to your new role? Public radio’s focus on mission allows us to work toward excellence. I want to create loyalty with our audience over time and make sure we’re serving them with content that they value. My background in commercial radio gives me insight into the competitiveness of the marketplace. There is great public thirst for information, and I want to look for ways to expand the size and diversity of our audience. The number one radio station in San Francisco is public radio station KQED. As we say in Boston, “Why not us?”

A

Q A

89.7 WGBH is Boston’s NPR® Station for News and Culture. What do you want the service to bring area listeners? I see great opportunity in the areas of innova tion, specifically as it relates to business, the life sciences and culture, more broadly defined as the way in which we live our lives. Boston has a rich history and an appreciation for its past, and we want to respect that. But Boston also is in the midst of enormous change, and I want 89.7 WGBH to be part of it—whether we’re reporting on diversity, religion or music, or exploring how Boston views itself within the world.

Q

89.7 WGBH has greatly expanded its local programming during the past two years. What are your plans for developing that service further?

A

I expect to expand our local coverage. I believe strongly that our emphasis on local content is not only an important service to our audience, but also a key way that we can distinguish ourselves in Boston’s media landscape.

Q

What do its partnerships with WCAI and with PRI on The Takeaway and The World (WGBH co-productions) add to 89.7 WGBH’s service? Each partnership is very much a two-way street, and each helps to raise awareness of our service. In the case of WCAI, both Boston and Cape Cod have such a distinct sense of place, each with its own specific regional issues. We’re always looking for opportunities to put our talents together to share those stories. Our work with The Takeaway and The World allows us to contribute local content to stories they’re covering and augment our offerings with national and international perspectives.

A

Q

You were a digital leader at [public radio station] WNYC, launching one of the first NPR podcasts. How is 89.7 WGBH doing on the digital front, and what’s next? We’re doing a lot online. We have a digital producer who is helping us to grow, refine and best utilize our online news service. I also expect that we’ll be doing more with social media on our talk shows. Each digital platform—be it the website, streaming, podcasting or simply helping listeners go back to find something they missed on air—is a way of deepening our connection with our audience. I want to make sure we’re giving them the resources they need.

A

Q

You’re just a few months into your new job. What do you hope listeners will take away when they tune in 89.7 WGBH a year from now? I hope they’ll say that the station is a doing a good job covering specific editorial concentrations, like innovation and life sciences, and introducing them to new ideas and voices. Our goal isn’t to copy what’s already out there. We want to shed light on stories and subjects that have been underreported or are just emerging, and at the same time grow our expertise in beats we’re becoming known for, such as our investigative reporting and our local service. Our audience expects a high level of coverage and content. Our challenge—and our mandate—is to meet that expectation every day.

A

Q A

What are your public radio favorites?

There are too many to name! If I had to pick one, it would be Radiolab. I think it does an excellent job of taking full advantage of the radio medium, from telling engaging stories to using sound and music in creative ways.

Q A

What’s your personal connection to Boston and New England? I’m originally from New York, but I spent a lot of time here when I was growing up. We lived in Charlestown for a few years while my father did his medical training at Children’s Hospital. I spent summers on Cape Cod and went to Colby College in Maine.

Q A

I understand that you’re an artist. What inspires your painting? I’ve been painting for about 25 years. My style is abstract realism, and I’m inspired by post-Impressionists like John Sloan and the Ashcan School of realist artists. My paintings used to be mainly of the Outer Cape, but now I’m doing city-based landscapes as well.

Q A

What are you reading now?

I recently finished Too Big to Fail by Andrew Ross Sorkin. I tend to read non-fiction, but lately I’ve been taking time out to revisit some of the classics, including Anna Karenina. Sometimes it’s nice to take a break from the non-fiction world of my work to get a more artistic perspective on the human experience.

Q A

How does it feel to be back at 89.7 WGBH two years after you helped launch WGBH’s expanded radio service? It’s exciting. 89.7 has made significant contributions to the Boston media landscape in the past two years, and I look forward finding new ways to move the needle.

WGBH, Boston’s NPR® Station for News and Culture September 11: A Day of Reflection, A Decade of Stories

Through national and international Programming note: Information perspectives, regional stories and accurate at press time; some musical contemplations, 89.7 WGBH programming segments may change. and 99.5 All Classical will join forces to reflect on the meaning and aftermath of the September 11, 2001 tragedy. “For the week leading up to the anniversary date, 89.7 correspondents will report stories connected to the event and its effects,” says Phil Redo, the new managing director of 89.7 WGBH, Boston’s NPR® Station for News and Culture. “We’ll go beyond the first-line question of ‘Where were you when…?’ to the more profound considerations of ‘Where are we now?’” 89.7 reporters and hosts will explore narratives ranging from the perspectives of young people with no sense of the world that existed before 9/11, to older Americans who often measure their lives—and their politics—in terms of “before” and “after” such catastrophic events. You’ll hear stories of three people in different locations on that fateful day: a man on a rooftop in East Boston who regularly watched planes leaving Logan Airport; a woman on her eighth-floor balcony in Lower Manhattan who recalls seeing a plane from Boston flying in too low; and a woman in Brooklyn who remembers viewing the disaster from her rooftop—and thinking of the friend she knew was inside the building. On Sunday, September 11, from 6am to 2pm, 89.7 will offer stories and musical segments that recall, and reflect on, the events of September 11, including local voices with personal stories involving the day’s events

and its decade-long aftermath. A special edition of NPR’s Weekend Edition, hosted by WGBH’s Bob Seay, will feature national and international news interspersed with field reports from Boston ceremonies, including the reading of names of individuals from Massachusetts lost on 9/11 and coverage of the State House ceremony. Portions of national ceremonies also will be broadcast throughout the morning from New York, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania. At 12noon, 89.7’s two local talk show hosts—Emily Rooney and Callie Crossley— will team up for a twohour program exploring the lasting impacts of the September 11 events. Rooney and Crossley will relate accounts from eyewitnesses, share thoughts from religious leaders, and consider larger issues such as the safety of Boston Harbor, the impact the tragedy has had on public discourse and civil liberties, and how specific communities have perceived—and been affected by—events in profoundly different ways. The hosts also will explore how the rest of the world has changed over the past 10 years, and address the question of whether Americans are any safer today than they were on September 10th, 2001. At 2pm, 89.7 WGBH joins with 99.5 All Classical to broadcast a special commemorative concert from New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall. Highlighting the program will be the world premiere of Italian American composer Silvio Amato’s Illuminessence, an oratorio specially commissioned by the Vatican in response to the heartbreaking 2001 events. Each movement of Amato’s new work celebrates a different major religion, including Christianity, Judaism and Islam, and champions faith as a notion of unity and peace. Fittingly, the orchestra and chorus also will be an act of unity: Benjamin Zander will lead a large ensemble of musicians from various local orchestras, preparatory programs and choral groups, including the Handel and Haydn Society and the New England Conservatory. The concert program also will include Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings and “Ode to Joy” from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. “I can think of no better way to mark this day than through this act of musical community—literally joining hands, and lifting voices together in Amato’s masterful writing to promote understanding and tolerance among different cultures,” says Ben Roe, WGBH’s managing director for classical services. (For more on the healing power of music, see page 26.) At 4pm, 89.7 and 99.5 will continue to simulcast, moving the proceedings to WGBH’s Fraser Performance Studio, for a “town hall” of live performances and commentary from a number of Boston’s leading musical artists, interwoven with spoken contributions reflecting on the day and the larger meaning of humanity, shared experience and the way forward. Find out more about 89.7’s special programs at wgbh.org/radio, and learn more about 99.5’s 9/11 musical selections at 995allclassical.org.

9/11 Remembered on The World

Sunday Spotlight with Eric Jackson

On the morning of September 11, 2001, the staff of The World, like everyone else in America, watched the broadcast images of the World Trade Center towers. When The World went on the air at 3pm that afternoon, the story was just unfolding, as it would for days. During the week leading up to the 10th anniversary of September 11, The World revisits that sunny Tuesday morning 10 years ago, and speaks with people who appeared on the program the day, and in the aftermath, of the tragedy. In addition, The World takes a deeper look at the evolution of international terrorist attacks post 9/11, and how children around the world are being taught about the impact and legacy of the 9/11 attacks. Weekdays at 3pm & 6pm Jazz on WGBH with Steve Schwartz

Host Steve Schwartz invites three jazz musician/educators to play (on their respective instruments) the work of some of their essential, favorite and up-and-coming musicians. Freakonomics Radio: The Upside of Quitting

You know the bromide: winners never quit and quitters never win. To which Freakonomics Radio says ”Are you sure?” Sometimes quitting is strategic, and sometimes it’s the best thing you can do. It’s all about opportunity cost: when you’re doing one thing, you can’t be doing another. This episode of Freakonomics takes a look at a broad survey of quitting data, and talks to everyone—from aspiring baseball players to prostitutes—about quitting after years of hard work, preparation and chasing big earnings. All Classical

By Ben Roe WGBH Managing Director of Classical Services

Ralph Vaughan Williams once wrote, “The art of music, above all other arts, is an expression of the soul of a nation.” Ten years ago, while working as the senior music producer at NPR on a bright September morning, I felt firsthand the immediacy and poignancy of the English composer’s words. As network journalists and producers, it was our job to report, reflect, comment on and contextualize a series of calamitous events that we could scarcely explain to ourselves. But what role could music play? Every public radio station in the country wrestled with the same question. Then a funny thing happened on the way to the newscast. The soul of the nation was in shock, and needed the therapy that only music can provide. I have chosen to follow a path in music because I feel it is unique among the arts: it is both a deeply personal experience (ask anyone around you with earbuds on), as well as an act of community (ask any one of the 65 million Americans who have ever sung in a choir). In the immediate days after 9/11, we witnessed abundant examples of both. For the news producers at NPR, it quickly became apparent that the interstitial music—the “connective thread” between features that are part and parcel of the public radio sound—was as important and necessary as the news itself; it provided listeners with a way to process the unrelentingly grim events. That unconscious national need to come together in the concert hall was evident the first Sunday after 9/11. I will never forget producing a marathon day of memorial concerts from across the nation, a day filled with profound musical utterances, from soloists, choirs and orchestras, all seeking to “express the inexpressible.” Mozart’s searing Requiem from the scarred and sooty Trinity Church in New York, right next to Ground Zero. Branford Marsalis’s plaintive soprano saxophone invoking Duke Ellington’s Come Sunday in the cavernous Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine. A hushed piano solo in McKeesport, PA, for the heroes of Flight 93. And, yes, a soaring, in-the-moment rendition of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending to an Atlanta audience filled with people crying hot, wet tears. It’s been said that artists are merely reporters with a longer deadline: they witness, they interpret, they create…and ultimately they tell us a little bit more about ourselves. In those darkest days, I learned a lot about hope, charity, humanity and forgiveness… thanks to the transformative, healing power of music. 89.7 WGBH and 99.5 All Classical will join forces for a simulcast of live music and commentary on Sunday, September 11. (See page 24 for more.)

WGBH’s annual Opera Bash is back—on both radio and TV! Tune in to WGBH 2 and 44 over Labor Day weekend to revel in 42 continuous hours of opera in spectacular HD quality. NPR World of Opera host Lisa Simeone will present the television programming, and also will anchor the Opera Bash on 99.5 with an NPR World of Opera presentation of Jean-Baptiste Lully’s Atys and special “Opera Without Words” programming all weekend long. Find more information about Opera Bash on WGBH 2 and 44 (see page 8), and visit wgbh.org/operabash for a full schedule and latest udpates.

NPR World of Opera

Host Lisa Simeone brings listeners compelling performances from top American and international opera companies. Sundays at 6:30pm 9/4: Jean-Baptiste Lully: Atys Among the earliest of French opera composers, Lully helped to create the theatrical genre called “tragedy in music” that was the dominant form of French opera for nearly a century. This 1676 drama centers on a man who must choose between the woman he loves and a powerful, lovesick goddess who won’t take “no” for an answer. Cast includes Bernard Richter (Atys), Stéphanie d’Oustrac (Cybéle), Emmanuelle de Negri (Sangaride) and Nicolas Rivenq (Célénus). Performed at the Opéra Comique in Paris, with William Christie conducting the Les Arts Florissants Orchestra and Chorus. 9/11: Gaetano Donizetti: Lucia di Lammermoor It’s hard to think of a heroine (Elena Mosuc as Lucia) with a fate more heartbreaking—or more shocking—than that of Donizetti’s Lucia, whose famous mad scene is one of the greatest moments in any opera. This compelling—and sometimes lurid—drama is based on a novel by Sir Walter

Handel: Rinaldo As part of the 2011 Proms Concerts, Rinaldo comes to us from the same city where it was heard for the first time, at the Queen’s Theatre at Haymarket in 1711. Back then, one reviewer called it an opera “filled with thunder and lightening, illuminations, and fireworks”—and the description still fits. Ottavio Dantone conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Glyndebourne Opera Chorus and a cast that includes Sonia Prina (Rinaldo), Varduhi Abrahamyan (Goffredo), Tim Mead (Eustazio) and Sandrine Piau (Almirena). 9/25: W.A. Mozart: Mitridate, King of Pontus Ivor Bolton conducts Barry Banks (Mitridate) and Patricia Petitbon (Aspasia) in this remarkable drama that shows us the 14-year-old Mozart finding his “opera legs,” in music that grows increasingly beautiful as the opera progresses. The tragic story centers on a king’s would-be bride, who is loved by one of the king’s two sons, then falls in love with the other—earning both lovers a death sentence. Performed by the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra and Chorus in Munich.
