The new year brings with it the opportunity for us to step back and think about what’s meaningful in our lives, and often to make resolutions to stay healthier and happier. But what is happiness, and why is it sometimes so elusive? Why do our relationships flourish at times, and fail at others? What causes us to have negative emotions, and how can we best manage them? We’re fortunate that this month a new program and multimedia project from Nova and Vulcan Productions, This Emotional Life (see page 9), looks into these and other questions with Harvard psychologist Professor Daniel Gilbert, the best-selling author of Stumbling on Happiness, as our guide. “This Emotional Life is about human connections and understanding how our social interactions are deeply wired in our brains,” says Nova senior executive producer Paula Apsell.“We look at the latest, cuttingedge biological and social science behind our human nature to help us better understand what drives our emotions and what can lead us to happiness.” Professor Gilbert, whose research examines why people so often mispredict what will make them happy, says, “Science has revealed three important facts about happiness: You can’t be happy alone, you can’t be happy all the time, and you can be happier than you are.” The series also opens a window into real lives.“You’ll see firsthand how people both ordinary and extraordinary cope with challenges as they struggle to achieve greater happiness and fulfillment,” says Vulcan Productions’ Richard Hutton, senior executive producer. Celebrities join in the discussion, with Katie Couric, Larry David, Richard Gere and others adding their own revealing perspectives. As with all WGBH productions, the conversation continues online, with a comprehensive website (pbs.org/thisemotionallife) that provides resources and opportunities to build social support networks around topics highlighted in the series, with a special focus on the critical importance of early infant/parent attachment and effective ways to deal with posttraumatic stress disorder. We’re also reaching out directly to our community, working in partnership with medical, health sciences and service organizations here and across the country. Creating science programs that sift fact from myth. Shedding light on fundamental questions that affect us all. This is what your WGBH support makes possible. I encourage you to experience This Emotional Life. You’ll be glad you did.

The Fifth Sub For decades, military historians believed that the USS Arizona was brought down by fire from Japanese aircraft. But the discovery of a Japanese “midget sub” far from the scene of the battle raises new questions about the Arizona’s final hours. Severed into three pieces and dropped in 1,200-foot-deep water outside the harbor, the sub matches four other vessels discovered in shallower water closer to the harbor entrance. Each of the four vessels was equipped with a pair of torpedoes—but only the torpedoes of the fifth sub are missing. Nova teams with the Hawaii Undersea Research Lab to use manned deep submersibles in an attempt to resurrect the fifth midget submarine.

The Father of American Architecture Noted architecture critic Paul Goldberger hosts this documentary biography of Benjamin Latrobe, the creator of the first uniquely American architecture. Latrobe’s tumultuous life was a series of creative triumphs, personal tragedies and constant reinvention. The film explores Latrobe’s life, from his early years in England to his immigration to the young republic and his work on such iconic buildings as the US Capitol, the White House and the Baltimore Basilica. The Vanishing The Great Sphinx is disappearing. The face of the mysterious pharaoh is being sandblasted to oblivion, its features eroded beyond recognition by whipping winds, while its limestone lion’s body is being dissolved by rising saltwater and sewage and shaken by planes, cars and construction. An international team of archeologists, architects and engineers, led by Zahi Hawass and Mark Lehner, is racing against time to save the Sphinx. Along the way, they’ll try to solve the riddles that have eluded us for more than 3,000 years. Nova/ Riddles of the Sphinx Tue, 1/19 at 8pm on WGBH 2/HD
The Beardless Boys In Afghanistan today, in the midst of war and endemic poverty, an ancient tradition—banned when the Taliban were in power—has reemerged: Boys, often as young as 10, are lured off the streets with the promise of a new life, unaware that their real fate is to be used for entertainment and sex. They’re the “Bacha Bereesh,” literally “beardless boys,” chosen for their height, size and beauty, trained to sing and dance for male audiences, and then traded for sexual favors among former warlords and powerful businessmen. Afghan journalist Najibullah Quraishi investigates this illegal practice. In total, more than 500,000 Americans succumbed to the flu that year, more than all the combat casualties in all the wars of the 20th century. Shootout at the OK Corral As a young man, Wyatt Earp spent his days drinking in saloons, gambling, visiting brothels and gaining notoriety as the legendary gunman in the shootout at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. Portrayed in countless movies and television shows by some of Hollywood’s greatest actors, these popular fictions belie the complexities of a man whose life was a lens on politics, justice and economic opportunity on the American frontier. Shortly after his death in 1929, Earp became a folk hero: a central figure in the American narrative of how the West was won— a man who took control of his own destiny. As our lineup evolves, look for new offerings that build on WGBH’s awardwinning productions made right here at our Brighton studios, from Greater Boston to Frontline, Nova to American Experience and more…bringing you stories that you won’t find anywhere else. And you can still count on 89.7 WGBH for your jazz and Celtic favorites, Arts & Ideas, RadioLab and, of course, A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. For the latest schedule, please visit wgbh.org/listen.
Saturdays at 10am Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! is NPR’s weekly hour-long radio quiz program. Each week you can test your knowledge against some of the best and brightest in the news and entertainment world while figuring out what’s real news and what’s made up. Host Peter Sagal and official judge and scorekeeper Carl Kasell (recently retired from NPR’s Morning Edition) team up with an impressive threeperson panel of journalists, comedians, and writers to keep you guessing. Regular panelists include author Roy Blount Jr.; author and radio commentator Tom Bodett; syndicated advice columnist Amy Dickinson; screenwriter Adam Felber; Houston Chronicle editor Kyrie O’Connor; Atlantic Monthly correspondent P.J. O’Rourke; Boston Globe magazine staff writer Charles P. Pierce; comedian Paula Poundstone; comedian Paul Provenza; Washington Post columnist Roxanne Roberts; and CBS Sunday Morning contributor Mo Rocca.
The Diane Rehm Show Weekdays at 10am The Diane Rehm Show offers listeners thoughtful and lively conversations on an array of topics with some of the world’s top newsmakers, journalists and authors— President Bill Clinton, General Tommy Franks, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Julie Andrews and Toni Morrison among them. Newsweek magazine calls the series one of “the most interesting talk shows in the country,” and The National Journal says that Diane is “the class act of the talk radio world.”
The Emily Rooney Show Weekdays at 12noon Emily Rooney, the award-winning host, executive editor and creator of WGBH’s Greater Boston and Beat the Press, hosts an hour of discussion on diverse topics that are of special interest and importance to our region.
The Callie Crossley Show Weekdays at 1pm Callie Crossley, the award-winning veteran journalist and documentary filmmaker who is a regular panelist with WGBH TV’s Basic Black and a commentator on Greater Boston’s popular Beat the Press program, hosts a second hour of lively discussion and analysis of local and regional issues.
Fresh Air Weekdays at 2pm Fresh Air with Terry Gross, the Peabody Awardwinning weekday magazine of contemporary arts and issues, has built a national following thanks to the veteran interviewer’s ability to draw her subjects out with spot-on questions and quirky, unique insights. No wonder Gross has been singled out time and again as one of the nation’s top interviewers. Her interviews are complemented by observations from well-known critics and commentators. 22 Schedules, program info, playlists: wgbh.org/listen
This American Life Saturdays at 12noon Radio host Ira Glass pioneered a new kind of radio storytelling with This American Life. Each week, Glass explores a theme—fiascoes, conventions, the job that takes over your life—through a playful mix of radio monologues, mini-documentaries, “found tape,” short fiction and unusual music. The stories are engaging, intimate, surprising, funny, disturbing and bittersweet. Glass and his staff have an unusual knack for finding writers and performers whose work hasn’t been heard on radio. “Riveting” and “mesmerizing” are just two of the words that fans regularly use to describe the series. Breakout stars from the show include David Sedaris, Sarah Vowell and David Rakoff.
On the Media Saturdays at 1pm On the Media with Brooke Gladstone and Bob Garfield explores how the media sausage is made, casting an incisive eye on fluctuations in the marketplace of ideas and examining threats to the freedom of information and expression in America and abroad. Each week, the show pulls back the veil from the process of “making media,” especially news media. The series has won a shelf full of awards for its efforts, including Edward R. Murrow Awards, the National Press Club’s Arthur Rowse Award for Press Criticism and a Peabody Award for its body of work.

Radio Spotlight Laura Carlo on 99.5 All Classical
Q A
How would you describe your on-air style? Since so many people wake up with me every day, I want to be someone you’d want to have around: a friend, a family member. I love the idea of inviting people to come along on an exploration. If I hear something really beautiful or interesting, I try to mention that before I introduce the piece. That’s something that good friends do for each other.
Classical music host Laura Carlo is getting ready to mark 25 years on radio at the same time that she is celebrating her first month as a member of the WGBH family on 99.5 All Classical. Making the transition to public broadcasting has been “a joy,” Carlo says. The Boston native hasn’t skipped a beat as she moved into her new digs at WGBH’s Brighton studios in late November, where her 5am–9am classical music show is drawing both longtime WCRB fans and new listeners. WGBH’s Susan Reed recently caught up with Carlo to find out how it’s going.
Q A
Q A
What first drew you to classical music?
I started my life with classical music. My mother would sing me Brahms’s “Lullaby.” My father was a huge opera fan, and I would sit on his lap when I was 3 or 4. He loved Madame Butterfly…so it was only natural that I learned the famous aria, “Un bel di” in Italian. When I started kindergarten, my teacher, Mrs. Floyd, asked the children if they knew a song to share with their friends. Up goes my hand. I don’t think she was expecting “Un bel di,” but that’s what I sang! I had 12 years of piano lessons, sang in the high school glee club and the Boston College Chorale, and took music as an elective. It’s always been a part of my life.
Q A
How did you first become a classical music host? I was a communications major in college. I began my radio career in news, which I did for 11 years. One day, our program director called me into his office, and said, “I need you to make a career change, because you get more fan mail than some of our classical announcers. You know the music. You love the music. I think you’d bring a fresh perspective to the music. You have a couple of days to think about this—but you start on Thursday!” That was 13 years ago.
How does it feel to join the WGBH Radio family? I’m so happy to be here. I’m excited about what this means for classical music in Boston. I’m so proud to be affiliated with Boston’s leading broadcaster, not just in classical music, but also in broadcasting overall. And I’m hopeful that with the new 99.5 All Classical station classical will grow—that by combining our various areas of expertise, talents and passion, we are going to create one amazing classical service not just for Boston, but for the world. Classical Music with Laura Carlo can be heard on 99.5 All Classical 5am–9am weekdays.
