THE JUDGING SYSTEM WGI Color Guard Judges undergo a rigorous training program including a home study process, completing a Judges’ Academy, an extensive period of trial judging guards in every class, and participating in a continuing education program that encompasses annual study requirements and clinics. The judging community is a body of professionals often trained in dance, theatre, and art. Their life work has often been reinforced by their color guard experiences, and they are looking to reward the efforts and achievements of today’s performers. The qualities that WGI judges measure for color guard competition are divided into four areas or captions: General Effect, Ensemble Analysis, Individual Analysis of Equipment and Movement.
EQUIPMENT 20 POINTS Equipment judges analyze the range and depth of the choreographic efforts of the flags, rifles, sabres or other props being manipulated. Equipment judges will also analyze the training, excellence and achievement of the performers in comparison to multiple responsibilities being asked.
MOVEMENT
20 POINTS
Movement judges analyze the range and depth of the movement choreography while spinning equipment and while strictly dancing. Special consideration is made regarding the training, excellence, and achievement of the performers, as well as the uniformity from performer to performer.
GENERAL EFFECT
40 POINTS
General Effect judges reward the plan of events or effects. Effects can be intellectual, (thought provoking, complex in design, literal to musical interpretation) emotional (adrenaline, broad range of human emotions), or aesthetic (color, shape, artistic). This caption is about the whole package and how it is brought to life through the performers.

35TH ANNIVERSARY It started out as an idea… something to organize the “indoor competition”… but it turned into something much more… Until 1978, the national color guard championship occurred in the summer at the DCI Drum and Bugle Corps Championships or at National contests of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Rules varied greatly from region to region. Don Angelica, Linda Chambers, Marie Czapinski, Bryan Johnston, Stanley Knaub, and Shirlee Whitcomb— gathered at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco to develop an outline for an organization that would govern the indoor color guard activity from coast to coast, and eventually internationally. The early years of WGI saw rules frequently changing to offer ensembles more freedom to move and design shows in new ways. Although initially the East was known for their equipment technique, the Mid-West stood out for their drill moves, and the West brought dance to the activity, in just a short amount of time the activity turned into a giant melting pot of creativity. Collaborations and friendships from pioneering designers from across the country pushed the indoor color guard and percussion activities to levels no one had thought possible. Through three and a half decades the “Sport of the Arts” continues to grow and become a place of comfort for thousands of teachers, performers, artists, musicians, and fans. This once fledgling activity, started in conversations of rules and guidelines, has become a venue for personal growth and achievement for young adults. Winter guard and indoor percussion allow performers to experience the arts in a whole new way while learning the value of hard work and perseverance. Whether this is your first WGI World Championships, or your thirty-fifth, you’ll find an energy all around Dayton, Ohio this weekend like no other. Passing strangers with a smile and a “Good Luck!” feels like a new best friend. While competition is the name of the game, support among all participants is where the foundation of this extended family lies. This is where we overcome, this is where we cheer, this is where we grow as a performer, as a supporter, and as a community! Thank you for being a part of WGI’s celebration of 35 years, and best of luck to all our amazing performers!

2012 REGIONALS Twenty six WGI regionals including four Elite Championship Events took place across the United States and Europe for the 2012 season. More than 1,000 color guards competed at these events to push themselves to achieve their best possible performance. Ten minutes doesn’t sound like a lot of time to perform when one considers all the hours of rehearsing that is put into preparing for it. However, when I walked off the floor there was an incredible rush of accomplishment that I could have never prepared for. In that moment everyone in the gym is experiencing the same journey together. In that moment, there is nothing short of pure magic being made. ~ Victoria Farias, Captain of the Flanagan World Guard Photos (clockwise from top right): UCF – Pegasus, Blue Devils, Santa Clara Vanguard, Granite Bay HS, Flanagan HS, Orlando Visual
