THE JUDGING SYSTEM WGI Judges undergo a rigorous training program. Many are educators and professionals who’s life work has been reinforced by their indoor percussion experiences, and look to reward the efforts and achievements of today’s performers.

MARCHING PERCUSSION

GENERAL EFFECT 40 POINTS

CONCERT PERCUSSION ARTISTRY 50 POINTS

General Effect judges are evaluating two specific things during a performance: Music Effect (communication, creativity, blend and balance, expression) and Overall Effect (communication, audio/visual coordination, pacing through time, imagination/creativity, entertainment).

PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS 40 POINTS Performance Analysis judges look at the composition of a show (musical and technical content, and simultaneous responsibilities) as well as the performance quality (musicianship, rhythmic clarity and uniformity).

VISUAL

Here an intense look is given to the program and the fulfillment of those programmatic choices. Here communication, musicianship, presence, and expression make up a few of the components being evaluated.

PERFORMANCE 50 POINTS Here the judge listens with a critical ear for the clarity of the intent of the composition, while considering performance qualities including musicianship, quality of sound, and technical excellence.

20 POINTS

Visual judges consider the show composition as well as the performance quality. Compositional elements being analyzed include: visual musicality, attention to detail, creativity and unity of the elements composing the composition.

35TH ANNIVERSARY It started out as an idea… something to organize the “indoor competition”… but it turned into something much more… Until WGI was formed, rules for the indoor activities varied greatly from region to region. Don Angelica, Linda Chambers, Marie Czapinski, Bryan Johnston, Stanley Knaub, and Shirlee Whitcomb—gathered at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco to develop an outline for an organization that would govern the indoor marching arts from coast to coast, and eventually internationally. The early years of WGI saw rules frequently changing to offer ensembles more freedom to move and design shows in new ways. In just a short amount of time the activity turned into a giant melting pot of creativity. Collaborations and friendships from pioneering designers from across the country pushed the indoor color guard and percussion activities to levels no one had thought possible. Through three and a half decades the “Sport of the Arts” continues to grow and become a place of comfort for thousands of teachers, performers, artists, musicians, and fans. This once fledgling activity, started in conversations of rules and guidelines, has become a venue for personal growth and achievement for young adults. Winter guard and indoor percussion allow performers to experience the arts in a whole new way while learning the value of hard work and perseverance. Whether this is your first WGI World Championships, or your thirty-fifth, you’ll find an energy all around Dayton, Ohio this weekend like no other. Passing strangers with a smile and a “Good Luck!” feels like a new best friend. While competition is the name of the game, support among all participants is where the foundation of this extended family lies. This is where we overcome, this is where we cheer, this is where we grow as a performer, as a supporter, and as a community! Thank you for being a part of WGI’s celebration of 35 years, and best of luck to all our amazing performers!
