Welcome

Welcome

Letter The President From March 5, 2001

I am pleased to send warm greetings to Winter Guard International as you host your annual World Championships. This competition provides a great opportunity for color guard and percussion ensembles to demonstrate their talents and skills and for people to view and listen to outstanding performances. Participating in activities such as a color guard or percussion ensemble can be part of a well-rounded education. Young people performing in such programs learn discipline, focus, and teamwork that can help them in the classroom and in their future careers. I commend your participants for their achievements, and I encourage them to keep setting high goals as they prepare for new challenges ahead. I also salute their parents and instructors for their encouragement and support of your efforts. Best wishes on this special occasion.

April, 2001 Winter Guard International Sport of the Arts Participants: On behalf of the city of Milwaukee, I would like to extend a warm welcome to more than 9,000 young people who will be taking part in the 24th WGI Sport of the Arts World Championship contests for Color Guard and Percussion Ensembles. I encourage you, your friends, and family to take advantage of the many exciting things that Milwaukee has to offer. You may do this by visiting the new Calatrava addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum, taking a relaxing stroll down the Milwaukee Riverwalk, or by attending one of the City’s many festivals that take place throughout the spring. Again, welcome to Milwaukee. I hope your stay here is a happy one and that your event is a huge success. Good luck to each of you and thank you for choosing Milwaukee. Sincerely,

Letter From WGI’s Executive Director Greetings and Welcome Twenty-four years ago, WGI held its first Championship contest not far from Milwaukee. It was a time of excitement, anticipation and enthusiasm. Some thirty guards met for the first time in national competition. Today 258 Color Guards and105 percussion lines convene for a whole new level of competition destined to crown new champions and create new memories for thousands of young people. This contest is of specific importance to me since the memories it will provide will culminate 24 years of involvement in the most amazing activity available to young people. This will be the last World Championship I will coordinate since I will be retiring shortly thereafter. It is with particular pride, great nostalgia and the warmest feelings that I welcome each and every one of you to this 24th Championship. I wish for the performers the greatest experience of their lives; I wish for the judges the fullest and most accurate scoring of their careers, and I wish for the fans the most enjoyable and entertaining experience of the season. To the wonderful and selfless volunteer staff, my heartfelt thanks. I hope that all of you will continue to support this wonderful activity, and I hope that each one of you, performers, fans, judges and staff will enjoy years of wonderful memories to come. Sincerely,

Lynn Lindstrom Executive Director

Welcome 7

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Winter Guard International, it is my pleasure to welcome each of you to the 24th annual World Championships. Winter Guard International is pleased to be in Milwaukee for this spectacular event. An event of this magnitude does not take place without the support of many people. I would like to thank the office staff and the many volunteers that make this weekend the biggest moment in pageantry. Nearly 8,000 young people from the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Japan will be performing this weekend. It is truly an international moment. As an audience, please show your support for the young people here this weekend. The performers are working to entertain each of you with their efforts. I would like to encourage each of you to visit the various performing venues. Color guard and percussion performance are within walking distance of each other. Winter Guard International is proud of each of these divisions. Thank you for your attendance this weekend. Enjoy the performances! Sincerely,

Randy Nelson President, Board of Directors

Letter From WGI’s President

WGI Lynn Lindstrom Tribute

After nearly 25 years of untiring and dedicated service to the pageantry arts, WGI’s Chief Executive Officer will retire effective June 1, 2001. When WGI was formed, the visionaries of what was then only a dream had the foresight to select a woman of the highest integrity and ethics to lead the infant organization. That woman was Lynn Lindstrom. At that time, Lynn was the Commander of the Midwest Color Guard Circuit, and even then had a reputation for honesty, integrity and dedication. With the unanimous support of the assembled color guards at that historic meeting, she was given the responsibility to turn this “dream” into a reality. Many of us smile with the sweet memory of that first year when WGI operated on a budget of $300, when Lynn sewed the first Championship flag, and when 30 color guards met from across the country for the very first time. The creation of this infant organization was built on trust and

ingness to listen to and to hear the growing number of voices who brought ideas and concepts to her “open door.” The first qualities that set Lynn apart were integrity, honesty and trust. This list soon grew as it became clear that she was a leader of all of the people, never placing any individual or group in an elite category, but finding value in each individual who comprised the growing WGI family. The newest or longest serving volunteer, the most uninformed but eager instructor, the most struggling unit, the novice judge, and the most highstrung designer, all held the highest value in Lynn’s vast communication network. Under her watch, the Percussion and the Marching Band Divisions were born and are flourishing. Under her watch, the Division of Education was created and now serves the development of judges and units throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Under her watch units have journeyed to the United States from Japan, Africa, Holland,

respect not only between those first competing color guards, but also for the person who would be the beacon for what would become the largest pageantry organization in the world. The guards came from the East, Midwest and West in a competition of such innocence and joy that it’s like has never been duplicated. Those first fifteen finalists, Quasar, Phantom Regiment, Seattle Imperials, Colts, St. Anthony’s of Everett, Marcus Whitman, Buccaneers, Cavaliers, Golden Knights, Conquistadors, Lindenaires, Valiants, Accents, Fox Valley Raiders, and Norwin Knights knew a moment of unity which has never been duplicated, and that first championship flag which Lynn made, is no doubt more cherished than any trophy or title since. Each step taken in WGI’s growth became a discovery that motivated subsequent steps with anticipation and the kind of joy that is only experienced when one has no real idea of the destiny awaiting the maturity of the dream. Lynn was there to guide each one of those steps of discovery. Many were her own ideas, and some were the result of Lynn’s open will-

England, and Canada. Under her watch the scholastic divisions have grown and in many cases have replaced the decline in the arts in our public schools. And under her watch our Scholarship program has grown to impressive proportions. Everything she ever focused on was always and forever to benefit the kids. She is watchful, she is protective, she is generous, she is strong and she is determined. She has served WGI to the fullest of her abilities for greater than two decades. The lifeblood of her efforts will be perpetuated through the incredible opportunities she has created for so many thousands of young performers, growing designers and loyal volunteers. A simple thank you is far too inadequate for a lifetime of service such as this.

talking about. You’re trying not to think about everything that is riding on this performance, yet you realize that this is WGI, the pinnacle moment of the season. What happens in the next six minutes will live forever in your mind, and on video!

“Is the guard ready!?”

“On the starting line...” No matter how many times I’ve heard those words over the past two decades, I still get a little nervous every time I hear them. I vividly remember what it was to be standing on that dreaded “starting line,” each second ticking by like an eternity; waiting impatiently, almost excruciatingly, for the first notes of the soundtrack that had engrained itself in my mind to begin. If you were ever lucky enough to be a performer in this wonderful activity, you know exactly what I’m

Photos clockwise from top left Taylor High School; Garfield High School; Loara High School; background Center Grove High School.

Welcome to Winter Guard International World Championships — you’re going to hear those words quite a few times this weekend. And every time you hear them, there’s a group of young men and women in front of you who have been waiting and working a very long time for this moment. If you’re sitting in the audience at nationals for the first time, welcome to our world. Whether you’re here to cheer on a friend or family member, or simply out of curiosity, we thank you for your support and hope that you will be as thrilled by your first WGI experience as many of us were. For those of us who return year after year, WGI is much more than the most spectacular color guards

and drum lines in the world. This is where we first began our journey to adulthood. It was during the countless hours of rehearsals that we learned about work ethic, discipline, time management, sacrifice, and the importance of teamwork. These are the skills that would carry us through our education, and later guide us out into the “real world.” Through this amazing activity, many of us were introduced to the ethereal beauty of music, dance, and art. Seldom does a day go by when we don’t recognize a piece of classical, jazz, or pop music we first heard on the winter guard floor. When the film Pollack was recently released, anyone who attended WGI five years ago was undoubtedly reminded of the Scholastic Champions’ perform-

WGI 2001

ance based on the life of Jackson Pollack, one of the most important abstract artists of the 20th century. As marching members, we came to seek out and cherish the reward of performing for thousands of appreciative fans. Many of us have gone on to be instructors and designers, striving to create shows that would allow our students to experience the same joy of performance that we did.

11 Perhaps most importantly, the emotional bonds and friendships that we forged during our years as performers and instructors are the ones that have remained with us the rest of our lives. Yes, we enjoy the thrilling performances of the guards and drum lines as much as ever — but we also come to WGI to catch up with our dearest old friends too. Of course, WGI is a competition. And while some of these performers hope to walk away from this weekend with a gold medal hanging around their necks, most just want to do their best and in return, ask only for your applause and cheers as confirmation of a job well done. Don’t let them down. With all of the troubling news in the national media, it’s easy to be cynical about our youth today. But as WGI embarks on its 25th year, let

us look back on the thousands of remarkable young people who have come through our activity, and who were inspired to greater achievements, long after they’d “nailed” their last rifle toss or executed their final drum roll. The young men and women before you are truly extraordinary, and give us all ample reason to be hopeful about the future of our nation. They are, without a doubt, ready!

“You may take the floor for competition!”

WGI 2001

Adjudication

Color Guard Judges

The art of judging is a skill which is developed over an extensive period of time; it is one which requires ongoing education and deep commitment. Individuals must be successful as a judge in their local area for a minimum of two years before application to WGI is considered. Before being allowed to participate in the WGI training program, they complete a home study of their caption spending upwards to 40 hours on this requirement. Participation at regional clinics and trialing through regional academies is their next step before participating in the Academy of Pageantry Arts held at the Championships each year. This final step is an intensified program covering eight hours of class room study as well as trial judging

Percussion Judges

nearly 80 of the competing units in that event. Their work is carefully scrutinized before they are considered eligible for the role to which they are applying. Once a WGI judge, education is ongoing including an annual summer study program and an annual weekend meeting for advanced development. These dedicated men and women are an important, often under-appreciated part of the triad of “Performer-Designer-Adjudicator.

The individuals adjudicating the percussion ensembles are among the most highly talented and respected percussion experts in the country. Selected first on their accomplishments and the respect accorded them within the community, these leaders then undertake another layer of education relative to the unique aspect of adjudication. They trial judge, they complete home study projects, and they come together for a weekend each year to extend the range of their already high standards in order to serve the performers who fall under their expert eye in the process of competition.

There always seems to be a mystique which surrounds the scoring process in any competition, however quite simply judges always score two aspects of the performance: “What is being done” and “How it is being achieved”. Because our scoring system is an educationally based program, there is a curriculum designed for each class reflecting the level of their particular development. In each class experts evaluate and reward the specifics which the designers have emphasized within that curriculum.

WGI 2001

Color Guard Adjudication

Five experts focus on the following: Two General Effect judges react to the originality, creativity and entertainment quality of the total show, crediting the designers who create the vehicle for the performers. They equally reward the performers for their ability to communicate that show to the audience, demonstrating the technical, expressive and emotional skills required to bring the show to life. One judge evaluates the quality and merit within the composing process whereby equipment, body and staging blend together to create the “blue print” which defines the structure of the program. This is the designer’s piece of the Ensemble Analysis Score Sheet. Performers are rewarded in equal parts for skills of a technical and expressive quality, which showcase their development and understanding of equipment, body and staging. Two judges evaluate both the vocabulary and the achievement of the equipment and the movement responsibilities, responding to the range, development and performance of the moves within the Equipment and the Movement programs. Performers are credited for their training and expertise in this area, focusing on a curriculum specifically designed for their level of development.

Percussion Adjudication Three areas of consideration are evaluated in the process of assigning scores to Percussion Ensembles. The overall effectiveness and entertainment value of the percussion program is measured and rewarded. Here the judge evaluates the musical repertoire, its quality, creativity, and presentation together with the visual considerations of staging, coordination, and delivery. Another judge measures the musical training and development of the players’ technical skills and their ability to display quality and musicianship in the musical performance of their show. A third judge focuses on the visual presentation, measuring the depth and quality of the visual design, the presentation of the musical elements and the training and excellence demonstrated by the performers in this area.

Denise Bonfiglio

Marie Czapinski

Ward Durrett

Revere, Massachusetts

Chicago, Illinois

Estes Park, Colorado

Denise has served on the Task Force for nearly ten years while mentoring and guiding young instructors who have graduated from her color guards. Most known for the excellence she brought to the Emerald Marquis, Denise was also responsible for the 27th Lancers whose impact opened the door for the success of small guards within the World Class.

Marie Czapinski was one of the original founders of WGI and served as Chief Judge in the early years of the organization. She was instrumental in the development of the organization in the early 80’s and she has a long and successful history of judge development within the Midwest. Marie currently serves as an adjudicator for WGI.

Ward Durrett is considered by many to be a Founding Father of indoor percussion. He was pivotal in the development of the Percussion Division within WGI serving as Chief Judge for several years. His vision was instrumental in defining the standards within this division since its inception.

In 1992 WGI established the Laurel Award as the highest honor to those individuals who make a significant contribution to our organization, and who have in some way influenced the course of our history. Their contribution may be made through artistic standards, administrative leadership or adjudication. In 2000 three outstanding leaders in our activity were honored with induction into the Laureate fraternity.

Dayton welcomes back WGI for it’s 25th Anniversary! The 2002 Championships will have a new look and offers spectators and participants another exciting change in the performance schedule, with the two Color Guard World Class Championships concluding the week’s events on Saturday night.

Thursday, April 11th

Friday, April 12th

Saturday, April 13th

Open and A Class Color Guard as well as Percussion preliminary contests begin today and utilizes seven sites to begin the tournament process for the more than 400 units expected to participate. Events will start at Nutter Center, Convention Center and Hara Arena, with later contests scheduled for Centerville, VandaliaButler and Springboro High Schools.

Preliminaries for the color guard A and Open classes continue during the day with the UD Arena setting the stage for the preliminary contests for both World Classes. Independent and Scholastic A Classes will be the stars of the evening with finals Friday night. Semi final competition will fill the day at the Convention Center, followed by the Independent Open Class Prelims. Percussion will continue their preliminaries in preparation for their Finals contest Saturday night.

Fans can cheer for their favorites in consecutively run contests at the University of Dayton Arena as champions will be crowned in both Independent and Scholastic Open Classes. After a short break, Percussion fans at the Nutter Center will enjoy the finals championship contest for that division while the other show will feature the two World Classes in what promises to be the most exciting color guard event in WGI’s history!

On the occasion of WGI’s 25th anniversary, this new schedule marks an awareness of the time value for the guards and for the fans. It will be a year to remember, a year not to miss, a year of great new steps as we start our second quarter century. Set your sights on 2002 and sign up early for the best seats at the best shows in town.

WGI annually recognizes the young performers of our activity who pursue academic excellence. All groups who participate in the World Championships are invited to submit one applicant from their unit who are high school seniors or already enrolled in college. A committee of volunteers, instructors and judges review dozens

of applications for these awards and select students who stand out in qualities of academic, artistic and personal standards. Through the 50/50 raffle and the purchase of this program book, you, the patrons of WGI, remain a major source of revenue for the scholarships awarded. Corporate and private

donations also enrich the fund that offers assistance to these worthy individuals. WGI hopes to award approximately $20,000 in scholarships in 2001. Should you wish to make a taxdeductible donation to the WGI Scholarship fund, please contact the WGI office at 303/424-1927.

Dennis Sohocki’s abstract theme is created in bronze and hardwood. The unique qualities of each carefully finished sculpture suggests grace and strength on a scale recognizing the achievement of a World Championship. The engraving of all Independent and Scholastic World champions on the base of each trophy is a testimony to those units who have achieved one of the ultimate accolades in pageantry.
