I will never forget ...
The day the whole seson came down to less than a point. Our whole drumline was standing in front of the score board, just waiting for the judge to post the scores for finals. I’ll never forget hearing the cheers of ecstasy. — Stephanie Betancourt, Thousand Oaks High School

Welcome April 7, 2005 Greetings to everyone gathered in Dayton for the 2005 WGI World Championships. Dayton is home for WGI and while it is always good to experience another host city, nothing is more welcome than Dayton opening its arms to embrace us once again. For the first time in our history, WGI will hold two separate championships for two of most unique forms of pageantry. All contests you will view this weekend will either be in arenas or convention center facilities to provide even units competing at the entry level the best possible “championship” experience. While change is always hard, the membership has risen to the challenge and this event will be the largest in our history with almost 12,000 performers. This year has seen a surge in the number of independent units competing at the highest level: World Class. The road these units take is not an easy one. Unlike scholastic units, there is no established support system and often times these units succeed solely on the passion of the director and staff who receive their motivation from their performers. WGI is committed in creating an environment for these units to grow and thrive and it is my fervent hope that this trend will long continue. A big “thank you” to all our sponsors who have made WGI the progressive organization it is today. We honor their commitment to today’s youth and to winter pageantry. Without this support, color guard and indoor percussion would not be growing at the astounding rate it has been in recent years. As you read this, the end of the 2005 WGI season is but a few short hours away. Thousands of hours of dedication will culminate in a brief moment under the lights. We should all appreciate this fine display of athleticism and artistry with resounding applause. I can assure you it will be a moment that these performers will never forget.

Welcome April 7, 2005 On behalf of the Board of Directors of Winter Guard International, it is my pleasure to welcome each of you to the 2005 World Championships! We are excited to be back in Dayton, home of the Winter Guard International Corporate Headquarters. This weekend will be filled with many exciting performances by a variety of performing groups representing countries from all over the world. This international representation truly reflects the tremendous growth WGI has experienced in recent years. The 2005 Winter Guard International World Championships are being held on two consecutive weekends for the first time in our history. How exciting for the spectators to have the opportunity to be a part of both Color Guard and Percussion events! Sit back, enjoy the young performers, applaud their efforts and savor the uniqueness of pageantry’s most exciting weekend…..both of them!!!

Welcome By Philip Mayard
Over its 28-year history, Winter Guard International World Championships have been held in nine different cities, each with its own unique style and personality. From the chilly climates of Cape Cod, Chicago and Buffalo, where we trudged through snow and ice to get to warm-ups, to the sundrenched landscapes of Phoenix and San Diego, WGI has thrilled audiences from coast to coast.
Welcome back to Dayton!
And yet, somehow, returning to Dayton feels like coming home. Traveling to this city has become as much of a yearly ritual as gathering with our families for holiday celebrations. Although we’ve enjoyed different cultural and recreational opportunities in other host cities, when WGI isn’t held in Dayton, something just doesn’t feel right. Dayton has been the cordial host to our Percussion World Championships an astounding 10 times, and each time we return, we seem to get a little bit more comfortable. From restaurants and hotels, to shopping malls and movie theaters, wherever you go this weekend, you’ll come across school busses and rented vans packed with giddy performers in various states of costuming. If you
don’t encounter a guard or drum line squeezing in a quick meal or nap before their next performance, you’ll more than likely run into someone with whom you either performed or taught. For longtime winter percussion participants, experiences such as these are as comforting as that old recliner in your grandmother’s living room. When we’re in other cities, we usually spend a lot of time explaining the winter guard and competitive drum line activity to local citizens. But in Dayton, everyone already seems to know what we’re doing here. They read about it in newspapers and see it on television, and over the years, they’ve become accustomed to us “taking over” their city once a year. From scores of rollaway hotel beds to last-minute banquet hall rentals, Dayton sees us coming, and does its collective best to accommodate all of our many special requests and needs. Not unlike our childhood homes, this arena holds some of our most cherished memories. For the thousands if not millions of performers in our activity, walking onto the Nutter Center arena floor to perform with our peers “one last time” was a profoundly important rite of passage. This is where we came into our own as seasoned performers. It’s also where we learned that hard work and dedication paid off, not necessarily in a judge’s score, but in the life-altering experience of performing for the best, most appreciative audi-

ence we could ever dream of. Here in this arena, many of us bid tear-soaked farewells to our dearest friends, and if we are lucky, it’s also where we get to see them each year when we gather to witness the next generation of performers having the same experience that we did so many years before. Now, WGI is extremely fortunate to have a truly state-of-the-art performing venue at the Nutter Center and U.D. Arena. This season marks the first time that winter guard and percussion championships are held on separate weekends. Now more WGI participants than ever will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the thrill of performing in these facilities! Whether this is your first WGI World Championship or your twenty-eighth, whether you’re a seasoned “vet” or a first-year “rookie”, we’re confident you’ll sense an unmistakable aura of excitement and history here in this arena. We also think you’ll agree that, while we may travel to other cities from time to time, Dayton is WGI. Welcome back!

The WGI Percussion judging community is a body of professionals including some of the most honored and respected percussionists in the world. These individuals bring their knowledge and passion for music to the performers. Many are educators and professionals who share a common understanding of the gigantic role the pageantry arts played in their own lives. These judges endeavor to offer a quality experience to the thousands of young people who grace our stage and give us their best. Some of the WGI Percussion Visual Judges have come from the color guard or drum corps activity and are now working to perpetuate the unique experience WGI Sport of the Arts offers.
The Judging System
Marching Criteria
Marching percussion groups are judged in three captions:
General Effect 40 points. Percussion General Effect judges are evaluating two specific things during a performance: Music Effect (communication, creativity, blend and balance, expression) and Overall Effect (communication, audio/visual coordination, pacing through time, imagination/creativity, entertainment). Performance Analysis 40 points. Performance Analysis judges look at the composition of a show (musical and technical content, and simultaneous responsibilities) as well as the performance quality (musicianship, rhythmic clarity and uniformity. Visual 20 points. Visual judges consider the show composition as well as the performance quality. Compositional elements being analyzed include: visual musicality, attention to detail, creativity and unity of the elements composing the composition.
Concert Criteria
Concert Percussion are judged in two captions:
Artistry 50 points. Here an intense look is given to the program and the fulfillment of those programmatic choices. Here communication, musicianship, presence, and expression make up a few of the components being evaluated. Performance 50 points. Here the judge listens with a critical ear for the clarity of the intent of the composition, while considering performance qualities including musicianship, quality of sound, and technical excellence.

Riverside Community College Riverside, California What is special to you about your unit? There’s nothing more important than to be having the most fun of your life with your friends. My friends I have made in my WGI career are my family now. We’ve been in it all together for such a long time. We have all struggled and learned so many things together. Nothing is better than that… friends. — Fernando Miller
2005 Program In a complete departure form last year, utilizing bold slashes of color on a white floor & bright costumes, the line will musically examine the essence of pop culture. The energetic presentation, an original composition by Sean Vega and Jim Wunderlich entitled “Manifest Destiny,” will again explore all aspects of movement.

www.rhythmx.org What lessons has winter percussion taught you? The great thing about the indoor gig is the audience interaction. I’ve learned there's much more to rudimental drumming than doing it hundreds of feet from the nearest spectator on a football field. We can be as “in your face” as we want to be out on that floor, and it's the only place we’re applauded for doing so. — Tim Jackson

Call it immaturity, but we still love it when our friends come by to play. Watching great musicians perform with the products you've created is a wonderful feeling. It fosters a sense of pride that encompasses everything we do. Are we the largest? No. But, we're working on that. The best? Some think so...but we'll leave that judgment up to others. Let's just say that, so far...we've aced Semi Finals with a perfect score in Percussion Quality, and we’ll see you in Dayton.
We would like to thank all the Ensambles that have chosen Innovative Percussion Drumsticks and Mallets as they face another year of great WGI competition. You are all champions to us.

What is your fondest memory from the 2004 season?
Finals night, after our last show, we pushed our keyboards behind the curtain and went out for retreat. Standing next to all of my friends from different groups was awesome. After awards were over, we went back and loaded the truck. At the first camp for 2005, we unloaded the truck and inside our mallet bags were tons and tons of confetti. It brought back a rush of memories of the whole season and especially awards. — Craig Loeffler, Music City Mystique

education made easy!
The WGI
Percussion Division presents The Visual Buzz. This educational DVD allows you to join some of the top designers in the indoor percussion activity as they discuss visual design. Discover design elements, terms and concepts which will broaden your vocabulary and widen your range of possibilities. Portions of the DVD are formatted as a round table featuring Jim Dwyer (WGI visual adjudicator), Jay Webb (Avon HS), Tim Fairbanks (Centerville HS), and Dave Marvin (Blue Knights). They discuss the topics: how to storyboard a show; how to come up with visual concepts; tips on staging; positives and negatives on pit placement; secrets on tarps, prop building, and design choices.

Winter percussion has taught me to treat everything with a sense of urgency. The season may seem like a long time, but once it gets up and running, it’s over before you know it. Every minute of rehearsal is incredibly valuable and how you choose to spend any given minute can make or break an entire season. Apart from that, it has taught me to work together as a team to achieve one common goal. That is more important than anything else. If you can’t work together, you probably won’t be very successful. — Dan Schmatz, North Coast Academy
